The Power of Positive Thinking Massaging Away Headaches

by special guest writer Kristen Curnan, LMT, CNMT, Integrative Healing and Wellness

Recently I was at a client’s home, setting up my massage table. Her husband and his friends began to tease her about how lucky she is to have someone come to the house and pamper her for 90 minutes twice a month. It was gentle teasing but the words “precious” and “spoiled” and “luxurious” were thrown around. While a pampering style massage is a lovely thing, it is not the only style of massage that is out there. It is not all scented candles and oil, Enya playing softly in the background, and long soothing gentle strokes. It is not always all about that, it can be and that’s wonderful but it isn’t always what the client needs either. I felt I needed to defend her, to come to her rescue and explain with her permission, the depth of work we do together during those 90 minutes twice a month. I have been a NJ Licensed Massage Therapist for 20 years. I have been a Massage Instructor for over 15 years and I currently have my National Certification Continuing Education Provider number, and I am Certified in Neuromuscular Therapy among other therapies. I work with many different types of clients, athletes, weekend warriors, office workers, the elderly, the in-firmed, and mostly people in chronic pain (pain that lasts longer than 3 months). Some have such severe pain and some that just need help getting through their days with less pain and dysfunction. WebMD reports that more than 100 million Americans suffer from chronic pain at a cost of $600 billion a year in medical treatments and lost productivity, according to a report from the Institute of Medicine.

Allison Feehan N.D., D.Psc, CRMT Owner of Integrative Healing and Wellness 732.202.6797 523 Main Avenue Bay Head, NJ

As a Clinical Massage Therapist, I assess my client’s pain, dysfunction, and limitations by first having a conversation and then by palpating their muscles, tendons, and connective tissue. Applying appropriate pressure and movement to the tissues to release tight muscles and alleviate pain. Massage has many modalities all with specific intentions. Neuromuscular Therapy is a specialized advanced system of massage techniques that work to target and alleviate pain and dysfunction. By applying these techniques, which create heat, movement, and pressure, the problem area is helped by breaking up the “knotted up” spot and by tricking the nervous system into sensing a different stimulus to react to. Once the area is “released” the client must then commit to stretching, re-strengthening, and changing whatever caused the pain and dysfunction in the first place! The massage session works within the individual client’s pain threshold since everyone’s individual perception of pain is unique. This treatment is specific and sometimes uncomfortable, not exactly what you see in the movies! It is effective and long lasting but it requires a client’s commitment to a lifestyle change to correct repetitive actions or poor postures. My client, the one lovingly teased by her husband and his friends is a chronic headache sufferer. Prior to our sessions she spent virtually everyday with a headache ranging from a dull ache that was constantly there to excruciating causing her to spend days in bed. She went through a battery of tests and doctor after doctor to determine that there is “nothing wrong with her.” She was eventually diagnosed with Idiopathic Myofascial Headache Pain and was sent off with muscle relaxers and pain medication. Her diagnosis is not surprising to me. It basically means muscle and connective tissue pain of an unknown origin. I see it everyday. I have experienced it and it is why I became a Massage Therapist. It is “of unknown origin” because there is nothing physically present to diagnose. No tumors. No irregularities of blood testing or X-rays. Her muscles hurt. She came to me as a last hope for relief. It was clear to me. Throughout her life, as many of our lives, she has put great physical and emotional strain on her body and it has manifested as pain and dysfunction. We began working together, coming up with a course of action for me to alleviate the tightness and her to work on self care. It is a process. The more she does her job, the less she needs me! This is a chronic issue. She, like many of us, will not be “cured” but in learning to step back and evaluate and care for ourselves, we can and will maintain our healthy and active lifestyles.

Shore Recipes Parental Guidance This is the perfect Thanksgiving dessert for those family members who like a piece of everything. It’s cheese cake, apple pie, and the gooeyness of a pecan drizzle all rolled into one. I made this one from scratch, as I have some gluten free family members, but if I were serving a gluten friendly crowd, I would have saved a step and bought my crumbs from Mueller’s Bakery. (YES! They now sell bags of their crumbs!) Either way, there’s a good chance you’ll have an empty pie plate by the time the night is over. Happy Thanksgiving!

The Spinal Column What is it really?

Chiropractors are often called “back doctors.” Actually, they have NOTHING to do with the back itself! They work on the spinal column -- one of the most important and complex components of the human nervous system.

The Nervous System The human body is a remarkable thing. At any given moment, it performs hundreds of thousands of individual functions -- circulating and purifying blood, turning fuel (food) into energy, maintaining proper internal temperature, taking in oxygen, and all the other operations which keep us alive and healthy. But we take it for granted. Guided by the knowledge our bodies are born with -our Innate Intelligence -- every cell and organ sends and receives messages to and from the brain. In fact, the brain acts like a central communication depot, processing millions of messages every second. These messages, relayed as electrical impulses, are sent out over nerves the way phone calls travel along telephone wires. A thick braid formed by BILLIONS of these nerves is attached to the brain and extends down from the base of the skull. This is the spinal cord. Smaller braids branch off from the cord. These braids divide again and again into tiny nerve fibers and fill the entire body, going to each cell, organ and tissue. Every human being has an estimated 15 billion nerve cells. All send and receive messages as nerve impulses through the spinal cord. What we do here at this clinic is make sure those 15 billion nerve cells are working at their optimum. Your body does the healing. We just remove the interferences. That’s all. Your body does the rest.

Students of 08742 MMSPTO: The Unsung Heroes of Memorial Middle School By Memorial Middle School Student Writer, Madelyn Killi

As an eighth-grader starting my last year in Memorial Middle School (MMS), I’ve been thinking a lot about how fast time has been flying by. In fact, it feels like just a short while ago, I was a sixth grader, new to pretty much everything, and now my class and I are off on the annual eighth grade trip to Washington D.C. in less than a month. We’ve grown and learned a lot from our teachers, principals, counselors, and all of the other members of the MMS staff. Along with our families & friends, they are the people usually credited most for helping students getting through the tough years of middle school. Don’t get me wrong, all of those mentioned deserve so many thanks, but what average people, or even students, don’t often think about are the unsung heroes of many schools, especially ours. That’s right; I’m talking about the PTO. What most people might not realize is how much our PTO (Parent/Teacher Organization) does for the school and much of the time with very little recognition. The MMSPTO is a group of people who work behind the scenes to keep many fun & educational school activities up and running. In addition to working and taking care of their families, members of the PTO also dedicate tremendous amounts of their own time to our school. The PTO plans events, in and outside of school and fundraises for MMS & students. Everything they do is in effort to enhance the middle school experience for students. The PTO organizes and coordinates many of our student activities. For example, students get to go to multiple great assemblies throughout the school year. In October, we had the annual PBSIS Kickoff assembly. PBSIS means Positive Behavior Support In Schools and it’s a big deal at MMS because we’re a

showcase school and one of the best parts about the kickoff is when the PTO invites a motivational speaker to come and talk to us. This is always a really fun and educational afternoon for students and it’s all thanks to the PTO. The MMSPTO also sponsors many great after school clubs that students have the opportunity enjoy like, Cooking, Gardening, Chess, Magic, Arts/Crafts, and Yoga just to name few. This is a wonderful way for students to express their individual interests outside of the typical academic classes. Each Spring the MMSPTO hosts a school-wide Talent Show in which students get to experience performing in front of an audience for our community on stage. Our PTO also hosts one of my favorite activities, the MMS Dances where students enjoy music, snacks and a fun evening in a safe environment with friends throughout the school year. Remember last spring’s Memorial Middle School Casino Night? That was all organized by the MMSPTO. Have you ever gotten a book from a Scholastic Book Fair, or perhaps picked up a pen, pencil, or cute little-shaped eraser at one of the many School Stores? These are also all thanks to our PTO. When it’s a nice, sunny day and we get to eat lunch outside at the picnic tables and under the umbrellas in the courtyard; thank you PTO! Thanks to their fundraising, we have enough money to get things for the school we wouldn’t have otherwise. They take time out of their own busy lives to go to meetings and events to make our school better for us. “The PTO is a critical component of Memorial Middle School and vital to the educational experience of our students.” says MMSPTO President, Alison May. “The PTO exists through the support of our volunteers and generous community.” The PTO is an amazing group of people dedicating their own time to giving back to the school system and making it better for students. A lot that goes on at our school wouldn’t be possible without them, so let me say on behalf of everyone: Thank you MMSPTO!!!

YES!

A Wonderful Place to Live! By PPHS Student Writer, Elizabeth Black

There is no denying that Point Pleasant feels puny when held up against nearby towns like Brick and Wall. We are small but mighty. This past June I completed my freshman year at Point Pleasant Borough High School. I rested at the bottom of the high school totem pole, but it was during this past year that I really started to feel like a member of the community and I realized a few things about the town along the way.

Name____________________________________________________

To be fair, I am not a Point Pleasant native. I was born in Union County and lived there for a handful of years before moving to Point. When I was younger we would vacation to the Jersey Shore once or twice a summer just like countless other North Jersey families. My parents eventually decided that they wanted to raise my brother and I somewhere else and relocated our family to Point Pleasant. I find that many residents (especially those of my age group) were born a few minutes away and have lived in Point Pleasant their whole lives. People really do dignify their pride in this town by carrying a “born-and-raised” attitude.

I couldn’t tell you how many posts I’ve seen about how much my fellow students love where they live because I would lose count if I tried. Even though the distance between the town I was born in and Point Pleasant is only sixty miles, there’s still a noticeable difference between the two. This makes me wonder how different Point Pleasant must be from towns in other parts of the country like the Midwest. There are definitely characteristics of summer for a teenager in Point Pleasant that summer in other places does not match.

CC#_____________________________________ Sec. Code______________ Exp Date________________________________________________________ Authorization Signature____________________________________________

My parents claim that they noticed some contrasts very quickly our first summer as residents of Point Pleasant. I think many of these things go unnoticed and unappreciated by born-and-raised people. The most simple example of this is how many people ride their bikes in this town. My mom says that in Union County kids don’t really ride their bikes because it’s a safety issue. As the years go by, that part of the state is becoming increasingly congested and areas that were once relatively quiet are sprouting into cities left and right. Another reason I believe riding bikes is bigger in Point Pleasant is that there are places for adolescents to go and things to do. The Union County town my parents grew up in had approximately three places to go besides school or home: in front of the drug store, a McDonald’s, and the little league field. Living in a tourist town like Point Pleasant gives so many more options. There’s the beach, the boardwalk, restaurants, shops, parks, ice cream parlors, the occasional fair or festival, and more.

Knowing that I could’ve ended up in a North Jersey city or somewhere else, I genuinely appreciate Point Pleasant’s uniqueness. I couldn’t ask for a better place to grow up.

Rover Rescue Hurricane Relief by Lauren Kehoe

Natural disasters are devastating, yet they create a platform for people to join together and help others. Hurricane Harvey was no different. One of the areas hit hardest was Houston, Texas. People lost homes, belongings, and pets. I recently traveled to Houston to work and care for 400 misplaced dogs. It was two and a half weeks of pure craziness. Deployed staff members and volunteers worked 12 to 14 hours a day to build runs for the dogs, walk, clean, do laundry, make fliers, get donations, and essentially turn an empty warehouse into a temporary shelter. It was amazing, exhausting, and sometimes heart wrenching work. Strangers from all over the country came together and gave their time and energy to the cause.

Bella’s Story

Lauren Kehoe is an avid animal lover and dog owner.

It was a rough start. The living conditions were not the best for dogs or people, and it was hard backbreaking work. Some of the dogs were not found in the best condition, so everyday was an emotional rollercoaster. Being understaffed meant everything needed to be done efficiently with no wasted time. The long hours were barely keeping heads above water. While we wanted to do more, everyone was already overextended and went home at the end of the day with overactive brains. And then, something magical happened. As days flew by, things began to come together. We built runs for all the dogs after starting out with half in crates. We had more volunteers and were able to get the dogs out a little bit longer with time for enrichment activities. The cleaning and walking system was solidified. More reunions occurred, and better photos were taken so all animals were clearly visible online. Other rescues reached out to help, along with fosters. There is still work to be done. A distemper outbreak shattered plans for a large adoption event. We rearranged more dogs in attempt to reduce exposure, starting treatment for the ones that tested positive and taking all necessary precautions. The month of October is when most of the 30-day holds were up, though fingers are still crossed that more families find their lost pets. Rescues are stepping up to help, trying to get the dogs without signs of the sickness out as soon as possible. Veterinarians and vet techs from all over are gathering to help treat the sick animals, ensuring us they are getting the best care possible around the clock. I’m not sure I’ve ever experienced so much compassion in one place. People and these animals lost everything, and so many beautiful souls gathered to do all they could to help get things back to normal. Without volunteers and staff willing to put in long hard hours, these animals would still be on the streets. Instead they are safe and sheltered, well fed, and have access to amazing medical care. They have all been given a chance to be reunited with their families, and if that doesn’t happen, they will be given the time necessary to find a forever home. Shelter work is physically, mentally, and emotionally draining. There isn’t a day you come home without being covered in dirt, sweat, blood, urine, or feces. There are times when you have to vent or cry or lean on others. And yet, people do it. People do it for the animals. Because at the end of the day, nothing else matters. Bella is a 7 year old Puggle purchased as a puppy from the local pet store. She lived with the same family for all her life and sadly there were some big changes that left her here with us. Divorce, a move, and no one to take poor Bella. Its a very sad story we hear too often and the poor pets are the victims. Bella was extremely scared when she first got here and acted out to our staff because she did not know us. There was only one person here that she would allow to get near her and we were unsure if she was even going to be able to be adopted. After a couple weeks, she warmed up to most of our staff and we can take her out for walks and pet her. Even some of our experienced volunteers have gotten to know her. When her personality comes out, she is a happy, funny girl who loves belly rubs and has quite the snort (definitely the pug snort)! We are looking for adopters who will have the patience to acclimate this girl to a new home and we know she will be a loving and faithful companion. She just needs someone to give her a chance.

Calypso’s Story

A concerned citizen brought in 6 kittens to us as strays that were to young to be without their mother. A staff member fostered them til they were healthy enough to be put up for adoption. Now at 4 months old (as of 8-10-17), they are all spayed and neutered and ready to find their forever homes. They were a gnarly crew when they first got here so we dubbed them the Pirates of the Caribbean mateys!! Calypso is a typical torti - can have a bit of a tude when she doesn’t get her way. She is loving in her own way, but will not snuggle, just wants to play and then when she is ready she will come to you.

Louise’s Story

Louise (sister of Thelma who was recently adopted), is a beautiful silver fawn hound/ terrier mix. She is about 8 months old and raring to go. She is about 25 lbs right now but will definitely get a little bigger. She would do best with a fenced in yard and lots of mental and physical stimulation. Shes used to the rural life and traffic around here does seem to make her scared. She will need to be housebroken as she is still a pup. Louise is super friendly and smart and will excel is obedience classes. If you are looking a girl who loves people please come meet Louise today.

Othello’s Story

Othello, Bianca, Desdemona, and Emilia are siblings who were brought in from a hoarding situation. They are 3 1/2 months old as of 6-18-17. They are a little nervous and just need a home with some time and patience to help bring them out of their shell. It may be a great idea to take 2! Potential adopters should be ready for all the antics of a kitten. They jump, like to scratch things, and are non-stop...even in the middle of the night!! They also need to see the vet often in the beginning. The decision to adopt a kitten should not be taken lightly. Kids ages 7+

Main Street, USA The Lowdown On Facebook Ads For Your Business by Rosalee Laws

• Every time you share a regular post on Facebook, get others and your staff to share and promote it. But consider even a $5 boost, which “boosts” your chances of increasing its reach and the number of impressions.

With around 1.9 Billion users, (that’s about 26% of the whole planet’s population!) Facebook has become hard for businesses to ignore. Furthermore, Facebook ads continue to be an even bigger challenge to understand let alone execute for a small business. The ads platform is a complicated system with different moving parts, that constantly changes everyday.

• Start with a small budget and test a few different ad types of ads such as engagement, page likes, and reach. Ads are available for as little as $5 per day. You don’t have much to lose just by testing.

But Why Can’t I Just Post To My Facebook Business Page? Isn’t that the same as Advertising on Facebook? Unfortunately, times have changed and the days of putting up a Facebook business page and getting “free advertising” on Facebook are gone. In the early days, it was possible for businesses to post to their pages and have a huge number of people see their posts. However, as the number of users and businesses on the platform increased, Facebook changed the algorithm (the computer application that determines what posts are seen by which users) so that people would see a balance of posts from their friends and businesses. But an even bigger factor is Facebook makes revenue from it’s ad sales, so obviously businesses that pay, their posts will be seen more. So while an organic (aka just posting/ un-paid) strategy is still very important, these non paid efforts on Facebook are losing effectiveness for businesses.

• Before you commit to a particular copywriting message, image, or video make sure you test it! • Target, target, target! Be very specific about who you’re targeting with your ads. Facebook can be even scary to how targeted you an get with your campaigns. Putting Facebook ads in front of the “right” people means your chances of boosting conversion rates increase. No more “spray and pray” as I like to call it. • Track impressions to make sure that customers who see your ad actually respond to your ad’s call to action (YES! every ad should have 1 call to action.) Otherwise, the ad isn’t effective. • You want your Facebook ad “relevancy score” to be high (The Facebook Relevance Score is a Facebook’s own number score based on trying to show people the ads that are most pertinent to them.) Ads with a high relevancy score help reduce the cost-of-conversion.

Why are Facebook ads so useful? Facebook ads allow you to reach your audience at the right time, in the right place for an affordable price. These ads enable small businesses to get in front of a “warm” audience—in other words, people who are already familiar with your business and/or have visited your Facebook page, Instagram (Facebook owns Instagram) or website. Facebook ads allow you to communicate with this warm audience and share news of special offers, which in turn boosts sales for your business.

• Don’t let ad designs get stale. Facebook stops delivering ads with a low “relevance score”. Users aren’t interested, so to prevent leaving the same ad designs in rotation, it stops putting them out. The 3 biggest mistakes that business owners tend to commit when it comes to dipping a toe in Facebook ads, are not testing the ads, not having a high converting landing page or website to send the traffic to, and not having patience. As with any other type of marketing, Facebook ads are an investment in time and money. However, when used properly, they can have a very trackable and very high ROI, which is so important for business owners with a small marketing budget. Facebook advertising is an effective way for your business to remain competitive in a dizzy noisy digital world.

A Few tips to consider while running Facebook Ads So if you are thinking about starting to use Facebook ads or have already begun here are a few things to keep in mind.

Parental Guidance Techniques for Tech-neck By Maureen Whelan

Tech-neck is the common term used for pain that is caused by a prolonged use of digital devices. Most handheld-devices including smart phones, tablets and gaming devices are used with a head tilt of about 45 degrees. This equates to a 50 pound weight* (Surgical Technology International, 2014) that is hanging off the delicate bones and ligaments in your neck. Considering the adult spends an average of 3 hours and 14 minutes daily in this position, the relationship between the two becomes clearer. Those mobile devices that are supposed to make our life easier are really just a pain in the neck. Ron Arzt, MPT, a physical therapist at Kesler Rehabilitation on Ocean Township, was the first to tell me about biofeedback devices that help the prevention and treatment of this disorder. He has noted an increase in the number of clients seeking relief from tech related injuries. Symptoms of tech-neck include tenderness, pain, tingling and loss of sensation or strength. Overuse injuries can also impact other joints including the shoulders, elbows wrist and hands. If not treated, these conditions can lead to long-standing pain, debilitation, and loss of function. The adult population are not the only ones at risk, and practitioners are noting an increase in youth as well. Karen Jacobs, a Boston University clinical professor of occupational therapy, has authored several studies on tech ergonomics, indicating that ergonomic education greatly improves neck posture in middle school students using tablets. “Children don’t want to be in pain, ….It’s really important that our children are doing lots of different things.” Specifically, our bodies are designed for movement, not static activities. We need to change activities, positions, stretch, increase our breath and heart rates, and take adequate rests from our devices if we want to feel good. More so, we need to provide our children with these same activities in their daily routine. Children can’t rely on their pain receptors as an indicator they’ve had too much, as the adrenaline produced during the gaming xperience alters their pain responses. But silently, damage is being done, so as parents we need to set the limits.

Maureen Whelan is a pediatric Occupational Therapist and mother of 4 children ages 16,14, 12 and 8.

Ergonomic education involves the design of comfort and function between the device, environment and the people that use them. Occupational therapists are trained in ergonomics to promote function and prevent injury. Some schools are incorporating flexible seating in their classrooms to provide their students with movement and various work positions. Standing desks, stools, ball chairs, and floor seating are all helpful in meeting the need to change position. Practicing yoga promotes spinal elongation which reduces the stress on your disc and helps to create more space between the vertebrae. Yoga also helps strengthen the core muscles which support the proper sitting position. But if a pain persists, seek medical treatment from your physician. Tips to prevent “Tech-Neck”:

1. Set time limits. For every 15 minutes of hand-held screen time, take a 3 minute break. During this time, look up, roll your shoulders and stand up and walk if possible.

2. Alternate work positions. When you are at home use your tablet holder while lying on your belly on the floor. 3. Adjust your computer monitors and TV screens so they are at eye level while being used. Use a tablet holder or pop-socket, and position your device on a surface at shoulder level.

4. Exercise. Yoga, biking and most any other activity will reduce muscle tension, joint stress and improve circulation. 5. Stay hydrated to keep discs in your spine pliable, as the are made mostly of water.

Work it Out by Katherine Kehoe

The holidays are speeding toward us at breakneck speed, and there’s a lot to prepare for. One of the biggest stressors for many of us ladies is the availability of tons of decadent food. It starts around Thanksgiving with all those mashed potatoes, corn bread and pumpkin pie and doesn’t stop until we hit January. Sometimes we give our all to fighting it and try to make mindful choices, and other times we just surrender and enjoy it while it’s there. Either way, everyone gets stressed about pants that gradually seem to get tighter around this time, but there seems to be no avoiding all that food.

While eating mindfully is important, there’s another thing that you can do during this time of year to keep yourself on the right track: join a gym! A lot of people wait until after the holidays and do this as a New Year’s resolution, but my challenge to you is this: why wait? Taking walks in the morning or doing some yoga before bed is great, but the holiday season can get so crazy that it’s easy to push these aside to squeeze in time to make another batch of cookies for that gathering on Saturday night. If you actually make the commitment to join a gym, and you go there at the same time every day, it’s a totally different experience. When you’re physically at a gym, your mindset is to exercise and work out. I know that it can be intimidating to start something new, especially if you don’t really know what you’re doing. But making excuses isn’t going to help you. You’re far too smart, amazing, and fabulous to stand in your way like that.

ALL THE OFFICE SERVICES ARE HERE!

Most gyms have personal trainers who can help you set up a routine. Or, if you don’t want to spend the money for that, you can look online and find plans and videos of how to do exercises. Better yet, grab one of your friends or your significant other and pull them along with you so you can learn together. If you think you don’t have time, you can wake up half an hour earlier, or stop by right after work, or before you go to bed. You deserve some time to work on yourself and to get those endorphins pumping so you can de-stress a little, especially during this chaotic time of the year. And when you have all that food in front of you, you can breathe a little easier knowing you already went to the gym, and you’re going to go tomorrow, and you’re going to keep working and not just succumb to eating garbage and having to do the elastic band trick with the button on your jeans.

The Book Report Beneath a Scarlet Sky by Mark Sullivan A book review by Brian Favretto

Pino Lella was a 17 year old boy living in Italy; his only cares in life were music, girls and food. He knew from The BBC reports that the world around him was crumbling from WWII, but in Milan, he was doing his best to ignore the war and the Nazis. He was content to focus his energy on landing a date with the beautiful and mysterious Anna, his newly found crush. Then the bombs rained down on Milan, and nothing for Pino would ever be the same.

mass executions and cold-blood murders, including the murder of Pino’s close childhood friend. It is only through the comfort he finds in Anna, the planning of their future together and the anticipation of Leyers’ demise that keep him motivated enough to get through each day. It doesn’t take a historian to know that the Nazis were in fact defeated, but at what price? What will it mean for Pino Lella and the plans he has for his life? In Beneath a Scarlet Sky, Mark Sullivan has created a jewel that is already headed to the cinema. What makes this story incredible is that Pino Lella is not a fictional creation. This novel is one of biographical and historical fiction, and closely captures the actual events that took place in Pino Lella’s life between June 1943 and May 1945. This is a story of transformation; about a generation of boys that were forced into manhood overnight. Their futures were stripped away as they buttoned up their uniforms, becoming engulfed in death and destruction. It’s a snapshot of how people cope during dark and evil times. Distractions from those evils got many people through their toughest times. Music, wine and maintaining old routines helped the Lella family to cope. It’s about a generation of people who were forced to question their faith in God. For Pino, each time his faith was renewed, it would slip away once more. His faith was strengthened when he finally learned from Anna the importance in finding the blessings that were all around him, and to be grateful for them. “Faith is a strange creature, like a falcon that nests year after year in the same place, but then flies away, sometimes for years, only to return again, stronger than ever”.

Inside the halls of his beloved cathedral, Lella’s priest invites him on a mission. “Pino left the chapel believing that he’d entered it as a boy, and now exited it having made the decision to become a man”. Soon thereafter, Pino finds himself in the Alps, guiding Italian Jews across dangerous mountain terrain into the safety of Switzerland, and out of the hands of the Nazis. So perilous that at times, the escapees wore white pillowcases to camouflage themselves in the snow from Nazi sharpshooters. Lella returns home to find Milan almost in ruins, a skeleton of the city he once loved. In an effort to keep Pino from getting drafted to the front lines in Russia, a sure death sentence, his parents convince him to join the Nazi SS. He becomes the personal driver and translator for General Hans Leyers, one of Hitler’s main henchmen in Italy. Leyers’ role as Procurement Specialist allows Pino multiple opportunities to send useful information back to the Allies about Nazi ammunition depots and shipment routes. It gives him a glimpse of the Nazi’s use of prisoners for forced labor, and he sees cargo trains full of emaciated human beings beginning their march toward death. Amazingly, it also gives him the chance to reunite with Anna under the most unusual of circumstances. As time goes on, Pino senses that the Allies are close to ending the war. He sees the desperate Nazis escalating the boldness and frequency of their atrocities. In gut-wrenching drama and emotion, we read about

The research that Mark Sullivan put into this book is apparent on every page. It placed me inside the book, riding through Italy next to Pino and General Leyers in 1944. The pages turned themselves, eager to know what would happen next in the life of this previously unrecognized hero. I highly recommend that you turn the pages of Beneath a Scarlet Sky, and discover the life of love, courage and tragedy that is Guiseppe “Pino” Lella. Healthy Morsels, II Hello 08742 Readers by Lynn O’Hara

Hello, fine readers. Allow me to introduce myself. My name is Lynn O’Hara. I am a licensed psychotherapist and registered dietitian and I have a private practice in Point Pleasant. I have lived in Pt. Pleasant my whole life except for the two years I lived on the Eastern Shore of Virginia and my time away at college. 08742 is a very fine zip code so when the opportunity came up for me to write for this fine zip codes magazine, I jumped on it. Some of you may know my writing from another local publication. My column, “Healthy Morsels”, ran for 17 years. “Healthy Morsels” started as a column about nutrition. At the time I started writing I was a registered dietitian working for the area hospital as the outpatient nutrition counselor. I left that position to go back to school for my license to practice psychotherapy. I learned some very interesting things while working for the hospital systems that prompted me to become a therapist. First, telling people how to eat does not mean they will be able to make the changes they need and want to make regardless of how badly they want to make the changes. Sure, some people just need the education and off they go but a majority of the clients I saw were having a very hard time making any changes at all. This was very perplexing. Why couldn’t a person change how they ate? I was, and still am, a very reasonable dietitian. If a person told me that would not give up ice cream, no problem. Changes have to start right where the person is at the moment. I never would expect a person to follow a meal plan they had no input making. Plenty of people wanted that: “Just tell me what I should eat and I’ll do it!” Guess what? They didn’t. This leads me to the second important tidbit I learned; using food as a coping mechanism for an emotional issue virtually guarantees no changes being made until the emotional issue is resolved. When I heard a client tell me, ”If I could only lose weight my marriage will improve”, I knew it was time to start looking at behavior change as a function of emotional health. So, back to school I went. As a result of being a counselor my articles have taken on a more “psychological” spin. Change is tough. Making changes in how we eat is really hard and made harder by the views and beliefs we, and society and the media, hold about weight and our bodies. My hope is that my column can make life a little easier for you, especially when it comes to food, weight, health, eating, body image and overall emotional health. I look forward to writing for you and to being a part of the 08742 team. If you have nutrition and/or psychological topics you’d like to see written about please feel free to message me via my facebook page, Lynnoharalpc, or contact me via my website, www.lynnoharalpc.com. Until next time, eat healthy, be happy.

Loren Donley: A Musical Celebration of Life by Nicole DeJacimo

“And when my voice is silent, my song shall always speak…” Tears sparkled in the creases of over two hundred pairs of eyes, as the famous Gaelic Blessing filled the Loren D. Donely auditorium on October 1st, 2017. Mr. Loren Donely, a former choral director of Point Pleasant Boro High School, passed away this summer at the age of 83. The performing arts department would not exist to the thriving extent that it does today without his generosity, love for music, and leadership. The event opened with the PPBHS show choir and alumni singing Sing Me to Heaven by Daniel E. Gawthrop and Jane Griner. A sentimental beginning to ease the audience into what would be an emotional evening. Following was his church choir, when they sang “The Beatitudes” gave the solo, historically sung by Mr. Donley, to his first son. There was no better successor because first and foremost, Mr. Donley was a loving father. All four of children have pursued music in their adult lives and proceeded to sing “Teach Your Children Well”, most positively fitting for the occasion. Throughout the performances, many friends and family spoke of their favorite memories with Mr. Donley. An alumnus, musical scholar and prosperous conductor, Dr. Michael Trotta spoke and conducted a song he composed, When Music Fills the Air. Dr. Trotta reminisced to important personal performances of his, such as debuting as a conductor at Carnegie Hall and many others, when Mr. Donley would surprise Dr. Trotta with his appearance. This was always significant to the young conductor as Mr. Donley had always been an inspiration to him. Point Boro’s popular acting teacher, Mrs. Muraglia offered the most passionate speech that evening. She explained that “Mr. Donely was my mentor before I understood what that meant.” She recalled him being the man who she could go to with any problem, whether in the performing arts department or not, and was honored when he asked her to come back to Point Boro to be his colleague. He instilled a place in her heart, and in all of ours. Mr. Donley will forever be remembered in Point Pleasant Borough High School in every musical, play, chorus concert and word sung on his stage, because his love for music lives on in all of us.

“Living deep within the song you sing… And when sweet music fills the air, there will be nothing that you cannot bear”

Back to Earth Magic 432 Hzntist by Natalie Berko

Sound healing is an ancient practice that is back in fashion and sparking the interests of not only those interested in spirituality, but scientists as well. Although sound healing is only now entering the mainstream, it has been used as a healing technique for centuries in many different religions and cultures. Science in modern times has proven that everything is made up of energy, holding its own unique vibration and frequency. These vibrations and frequencies each hold the ability to be increased or decreased. Further studies have shown that one individual vibration can directly affect another person’s energy. This interrelation has been proven through studying quantum mechanics and our electromagnetic field or more commonly referred to as “auras”. Knowing this, we can conclude since sounds hold their own frequencies, specific sound frequencies have the ability to affect our own. Dr. Herbert Benson founder of Harvard’s Mind/Body Medical Institute, studied how mantric chanting can help induce the relaxation response. The relaxation response is an individual’s ability to prompt their body to release chemicals and brain signals that cause muscles to relax, respiration to slow and blood pressure to drop. Benson’s studies found that the relaxation response can reduce symptoms of IBS and counteract the physiological changes of stress including muscle tension, headache, upset stomach, racing heartbeat and shallow breathing. Dr. Ranjie Singh a neuroscientist found that chanting specific mantras releases the hormone melatonin. Chanting has been found to oxygenate the brain reduce heart rate, improve blood pressure and calm brain wave activity. German physicist Winfried Otto Schumann documented the Schumann Resonance in 1952. He understood that global electromagnetic resonances exist within the cavity between the Earth’s surface and the inner edge of the ionosphere and are activated by lightning. He determined that the frequency of these electromagnetic waves are very low, ranging anywhere from 7.86 Hz to 8 Hz. This frequency is essentially the Earth’s heartbeat. 432 Hz resonated with the frequency of 8 Hz. This frequency is at the top end of the Theta range and at the start of the Alpha range. This induces a very relaxed but conscious state of mind open to intuitive learning.

Natalie Berko Certified Crystal Healer

Think of all the frequencies that travel through your brain on any given day: cell phones, Wi-Fi, radio and microwaves. All of these things exist at different frequencies pulling our brain from one to the next. Our brains are in a constant state of yo-yo, it’s no wonder these devices emitting artificial electromagnetic radiation have been linked to cancer, depression and insomnia. So it makes sense that if we spend more time being attuned to the natural electromagnetic pulses of the Earth at 432 Hz we would in turn feel more centered, balanced, conscious and peaceful. It is said that 432 Hz vibrates with universe’s golden mean, Phi and unifies the properties of light, time, space, matter, gravity and magnetism with biology, the DNA code and consciousness. When our atoms and DNA start to resonate in harmony with the spiraling pattern of nature our sense of connection to nature is said to be magnified. The number “432” is also reflected in rations of the sun, Earth and moon as well as the procession of the equinoxes, the Great Pyramid in Egypt and Stonehenge among many other sacred sites. It’s clear that sound healing is effective in many cases, and although the specific A=432 Hz frequency still has more research to be done there’s no harm in giving it a try! There are many sites available and apps that offer meditation music, most of which will be tuned to that magic number 432 Hz!
