Shore Recipes I’ve found myself challenged as a self-taught foodie, with my body craving healthier options and rejecting common ingredients such as gluten and dairy. The Book Report “Origin”

“Where do we come from”. “Where are we going?”. Dan Brown endeavors to give you the fictional answers to these questions in his latest novel, “Origin”. No stranger to controversy, Brown has once again chosen religion as the backdrop for another divisive plot, this time pitting the creationists against the evolutionists.

Will they succeed in bringing Kirsch’s discovery to the millions who are following the unfolding drama?

There are some things I love about Dan Brown’s writing style. He immerses himself in the settings of his books, and often has me researching certain buildings and places on the computer to see where his characters are playing out the plot. In this novel we are treated to works of the unique architect Antoni Gaudi in Barcelona: Sagrada Familia, a Roman Catholic Basilica 136 years in the making and still incomplete, and Casa Mila, a residential oddity with almost no straight lines. I also like that he highlights pertinent technology, and demonstrates the good with the bad of each.

In “Origin”, artificial intelligence plays a major role in the story, and Brown demonstrates the progress toward mimicking human understanding, but also points out the flaws of AI: being unable to hope and dream, and unable to plan for the future.

The main character, Robert Langdon, is back for his fifth appearance. This professor of symbology and religious iconography has been summoned to Spain by a former student, to be present for the announcement of an important discovery; so important that it promises to change the face of science and religion forever.

Billionaire inventor and futurist Edmond Kirsch has assembled a crowd of the world’s most influential people at the Guggenheim Museum Bilboa, in order to reveal his discovery, which will answer those opening questions: “Where do we come from?” and “Where are we going?”.

As the event begins, Langdon is given a private tour of the museum using some fascinating technology and artificial intelligence (AI).

Here Dan Brown, as he does so well, makes us present at the Guggenheim, seeing what Langdon is seeing inside the museum. He describes museum structure and artwork in great detail, setting the stage for the big reveal. In a hectic but predictable turn of events, things go horribly wrong for Kirsch’s big night, and the revelation appears postponed indefinitely. Langon now finds himself paired up with the apprehensive future princess of Spain, Ambra Vidal, as they try to protect themselves from the swirling chaos, and hopefully uncover Kirsch’s discovery.

What I find less attractive about Brown’s writing is that he has become repetitious. Like “Origin”s older siblings “Angels and Demons” and “The Da Vinci Code”, he has once again polarized technology and religion, favoring the miracles of technology over the miracles of religion. I understand that such controversy can lead to increased book sales, but a change of pace might lead to even more.

In typical Dan Brown fashion, the pace quickens as the duo go on a code-seeking mission throughout Barcelona in order to solve clues and evade captors. In a world where news evolves in real time (even “fake news”), Langdon and Vidal find it increasingly difficult to complete their task. Will they be able to outrun technology?

If you’re looking to be entertained, you will enjoy this book, as I did. It is an easyreading page turner that points out how a change in our perspective can allow us to see what our neighbors see as truth. However, if you’re looking for answers to the questions “Where do we come from?” and “Where are we going?”, it might be best to look elsewhere. “Origin”

Rover Rescue Doggy Dental Care

Are dogs’ mouths really cleaner than humans? We would like to think so, but it isn’t always a realistic expectation, especially if we don’t brush our dogs’ teeth on a regular basis.

I’ll be the first one to admit that brushing my dogs’ teeth was never part of my daily routine.

I had a toothbrush and some dog friendly toothpaste, but they collected dust in my cupboard until I remembered to brush them every few months. Now that my dog is older and the risks of going under anesthesia for professional dentals have increased, I have made it more of a priority.

Learning the importance of regular canine dental care has helped me hold myself accountable.

Dental care in dogs affects quality of life, behavior, mood, and lifespan. Dental disease begins with plaque, which is filled with nasty bacteria and forms on teeth surfaces in as little as two hours. Next, the gums become inflamed and swollen, causing bad breath and pain. In some cases the gums can begin to bleed or teeth can fall out. If left untreated for too long at this stage, damage to gums, teeth, and bone can be irreversible. The more bacteria that gather in the mouth, the more that enter the body and the bloodstream each time a dog swallows.

Small dogs are even susceptible to jaw fractures. Dogs’ mouths are more alkaline than humans, causing more plaque formation.

The good news is that dental disease is preventable. Ideally, dogs’ teeth should be brushed twice a day. Of course, any brushing is better than no brushing. Not all dogs love getting their teeth brushed, making the earlier the better for familiarizing them with hands around and inside their mouths. You can start by touching your dogs’ muzzle lightly for a second, then rewarding them with a treat or pets. If they continue to get more comfortable, start lifting the flaps of the mouth and eventually touching the teeth themselves. Be sure to consult a professional if you are worried about your dog or your safety. Every dog is different for handling.

There are other helpful ways to maintain a healthy mouth in addition to regular brushing. High quality dog food can help scrape plaque off the teeth. There are also a variety of bones and treats with additives to prevent the hardening of plaque.

Though prices can add up, vets offer oral exams and cleaning. Some pet health insurances may cover these dentals.

If they can’t be done on a regular basis, occasional checkups still help promote dental and overall health.

No one is perfect, and any level of dental care is a step up from nothing. Work your way up to a schedule that fits your life and your dog. Toothbrushes, toothpaste, and dental bones can be purchased online or in pet supply stores. Try making it fun, such as rewarding with a special toy or treat only used for “dental time”. Healthy teeth go a long way, and regular upkeep is the best preventative care.

Fashion Frenzy Closet Full of Clothes and Nothing to Wear ?!

Sound familiar? You are not alone! It’s the most common thing I hear as stylist and shop owner. No matter if you have a small closet like I do or a wonderful walk-in closet like dreams are made of the struggle is the same. You open your closet to get dressed and it goes downhill from there! How can there be so many things in there but nothing to actually wear?

There’s a few basic reasons why this happens.

Let’s explore the issues and discuss some solutions.

Another option is to consign the items you no longer wear. Earning some cash for these items will make you feel good for finally letting them go. Now get yourself some new hangers. Putting all of your clothes on the same hangers instantly creates order. Organize all of your remaining items by groups – put all of your jackets together, then dresses, tops, skirts and pants. Now be an organizing superstar and put each group in order from light colors to dark colors.

It will be much easier to create an outfit when everything is in order like this. The time spent organizing your closet will save you time and energy every morning when you are getting dressed.

waste of time so you buy something so you don’t leave empty handed. I get it – you want something to show for your time and effort – but are you really going to wear it?

Solution: Think of the big picture. It’s easy to be drawn to the

Mentally review what you already own and coordinate it with something you have in your closet. As Marc Jacobs says “Clothes mean nothing until someone lives in them.” Plan on living in your clothes, not just looking at them.

As Carrie Bradshaw said “I like my money right where I can see it…in my closet.” It is never a waste of money to invest in classic and statement pieces that you will keep in rotation for years to come. It does become a waste of money if they hang or sit in your closet and never get to come out and play. These pricier pieces deserve to be enjoyed. They were created to be appreciated. This is usually an issue of emotion. You spent a lot of money and you could not possibly let the item go. But every time you open your closet and realize you don’t wear that piece you feel bad. That negative energy surrounds your closet and makes it difficult to pull together an outfit. Getting dressed can and should be fun – it shouldn’t be sad and stressful.

Parental Guidance The End of the Rope

I’ve been warned by more seasoned parents of teens that high school years are nothing short of tumultuous. I’m finding that is true, and it starts as early as middle school. I have struggled for a long time to understand it. My husband and I provide a fairly predictable schedule and have clear expectations. We express our love frequently and provide our children with support and opportunities to develop their individual interests and talents. I’m even a big believer of allowing failure and missteps. Yet, I am still found wondering at times, how a seemingly benign question or remark became the spark that caused an explosion? Recently, I discovered something that shed some light into the world of a teenager, a world that I somehow forgot, but needed desperately to be reminded of. This “something” was a letter written by Gretchen Schmelzer, PhD, and licensed psychologist. “The Letter Your Teenager Can’t Write You”, was found on a blog called Emotional Geographic .

Dr. Schmelzer writes about the underlying struggle between teens and parents, and why it is so important to maintain holds and boundaries even as our teens struggle to break free. She’s not talking about only enforcing curfews or the like, but rather not budging on our emotional attachment. Parents must provide support and unconditional love despite the attitudes and choices our teens will make. She writes from a teen’s perspective about their need to fight and specifically, fight their parents. Why? Because as parents, we are a safe haven. Our children trust us more than they will admit, more than they trust themselves. Teens are entering a strange new world as they venture on their years long transition into adulthood. For all their lack of knowledge about their world and their future…our children know who they are, when we still act like their parents. We are the rope they are holding onto.

I’ve learned through my education and experience as an Occupational Therapist that children will test boundaries more, when boundaries are inconsistent. Children aren’t trying to be “bad kids” or choosing oppositional behavior. We have to look at it from a child’s perspective.

If expectations, rules, routines and responsibilities change frequently, the child is unable to produce predictable responses. Thus, the child resorts to basic problem solving of trial and error in attempt to understand this line. They push button to get an effect; if there is no effect, another button will be pushed. So, if Mom doesn’t react when I call my brother names, or poke him, or knock down his block tower….what will it take?

Healthy Morsels, II Eating to Reduce Greenhouse Emissions

I recently read an interesting op-ed piece on the case for carbon taxing beef and it got me thinking about the foods we eat and our care, or lack thereof, for our earth. Whether you want to admit to global warming or not one thing is certain, we do not take good enough care of our planet and the living beings on it. There are many reasons for this, which I am not going to get into today. What I am going to talk about is one way in which we can care for our earth and our bodies at the same time.

Perhaps we could take smaller portions so nothing gets tossed in the garbage. Perhaps we could use our leftovers better rather than dumping them in the trash when we clean out our fridges.

Agriculture is the third largest source of greenhouse gas emissions after the energy and industrial sectors. This comes from the fossil fuels used to plant, fertilize and harvest the feed that fatten up the animals for market. It also comes from the gas the animals emit from digestion (yes, that really is a thing!). Now, while I am not sure that a carbon tax will ever be a reality, we can do other things to decrease the amount of harm our penchant for hamburgers is doing to the environment. What if we ate less meat? What if we ate less of everything?

I’m not advocating you become vegan or vegetarian. We waste vegetables, too. (Grow a garden and see how you feel tossing out veggies after you have tended to the garden.) What I am talking about is just making sure you eat what you cook and try cooking less.

If everyone ate a little less meat, a little less of everything, we could reduce greenhouse emissions and reduce our waistlines. Consider also this; eating smaller portions feels better. Remember how you feel after you eat a really big, heavy meal. Not so good, eh? Try eating half the amount you normally do and see how you feel. If you ate enough to be satisfied you’ll feel pretty good. Now, try an experiment. Eat half the amount of meat you normally do and fill up instead on vegetables. See how you feel after that. Chances are you’re going to feel pretty darn good.

We are a consumer driven country. We purchase lots of things.

We eat lots and lots of food and we waste lots and lots of food.

This past week I was in Florida visiting my son. We went out to dinner and he got a whole snapper. The fish was delicious and he ate most of it but he couldn’t finish the dish. Seeing the food on his plate after it came off the whole fish right there in front of me forced home the point that the fish in front of him gave it’s life to be food for a human. Watching a third of it hit the trash can felt so wasteful. It’s funny how I don’t think of that when I throw out leftover chicken or beef. We have gotten used to seeing food in the form we eat it rather than

So imagine this, a plate with less meat on it and more veggies. You’ll also be helping to create less water pollution, deforestation, and loss of biodiversity, less overall pollution and less human illness and death.

Sounds pretty good. We can all change how we eat just a little and make a big difference. Until next time, eat healthy, be happy.

The use of alternative and complimentary therapies with mainstream medicine has gained momentum. Aromatherapy is one of these complimentary therapies which uses essential oils as the major therapeutic agents to treat ailments. Essential oils or volatile oils are extracted from the flowers, barks, stem, leaves, roots, fruits and other parts of the plant by various methods. Aromatherapy is often used to improve mood, change cognitive states, and can also be utilized as a supplemental medicine. Essential oils came into existence after scientist deciphered the antiseptic and skin permeability properties of the oils. Inhalation local application and baths are the major methods used in aromatherapy. Once the essential oils are in the system they remodulate themselves and work in a gentle manner at the affected area. One of the most satisfactory aspects of using essential oils medicinally and cosmetically is that they enter and leave the body with efficiency, leaving no toxins behind.

Aromatherapy has been around in some form from thousands of years, but it wasn’t well-known until the 11th century with the development of steam distillation. One of the most important elements of aromatherapy is synergy, which is the combination of numerous essential oils that can actually create a more powerful effect than oils would on their own. This is why blending essential oils is such an important area of study for alternative healers. Recent studies conducted using functional imaging scans have shown that fragrant aromatherapy oils have positive effects on the primitive region in the brain called the limbic system, which helps control both emotional responses and behaviors. The key to achieving results from aromatherapy is to use pure, therapeutic grade oils rather than those with synthetic ingredients. The effectivenesss of aromatherapy practices depends on the quality of the oils, the combination and the dosage. One of the most widespread and popular uses of aromatherapy is relaxation and stress relief. Lavender is believed to have a practically universal calming effect that lowers activation of the sympathic nervous system responsible for the fight or flight response. Many aromatherapy oils help people unwind and feel less stressed, so they can be very useful for regulating sleep.

Diffusing essential oils in your bedroom can create a calming environment that can help you get a more restful sleep and even realign your circadian rhythms. Depending on the oils chosen aromatherapy can be used to treat respiratory issues, improve skin health, soothe inflammation and increase energy levels ask from a few tiny drops!
