You Go Girl Well, Why Not?

A good friend of mine sent me a text the other night wanting to vent about something that had happened at work. She had basically been reprimanded for wearing a piece of clothing that was inappropriate for work - but her supervisor made it clear that one of her coworkers had brought the item to her attention. She was so upset that someone would have gone behind her back and “tattled” on her.

You know what my initial reaction was? Her coworker was jealous. My friend is a fun, bubbly, energetic and pretty young woman, and she looked fabulous in the clothing in question.

I told her that one of the grouchy old ladies she worked with was obviously intimidated by her, and it was really sad that she had to spend her time trying to make others as miserable as she was.

But when I thought about what I was saying, I realized that it is really sad that women feel the need to tear down other women. And the thing is, we’re all guilty of it. How many times have we seen a naturally thin woman chowing down on some cake and enviously thought, “Oh, I HATE her!”? How many times have we been interested in a man and found out that he was into some other woman, and immediately jumped to: “What does she have that I don’t have?”

And so it goes.

There are a lot of problems with this situation, but the first one that comes to mind is this: women and feminism have made some serious progress, but we still have a ways to go until we get that coveted equality. But if we’re always tearing each other down, then it just means it’s okay for everyone else to. This constant vicious competition we are in with each other is getting us nowhere - in fact, it’s holding us back.

I’ve heard a lot of women say that they don’t like other women.

Well, why not? Because they’re petty and silly and shallow and self absorbed. But you know what is petty, silly, and shallow? Judging someone based on their gender.

How about instead, we stop picking other women apart and start appreciating the beautiful things about them?

Every single woman, no matter who she is, what she does, or where she came from, has so much to offer.

And if we don’t start appreciating those gifts, then no one is going to.

I know that somewhere along the line, your mother really messed you up, or a best friend stabbed you in the back, or something happened to make you feel like you can’t trust other women. But you don’t have to trust them with your deep, dark secrets.

How about instead, just pick out one thing about them, and give them a compliment? Show a little appreciation and support. You’ll be surprised how much it will come back around to you if we begin to spread some love. But it has to start with us.

Parental Guidance Hope

This single word can provide light in the darkest of days, and strength for the most difficult battles in life.

Without hope, we have nothing but despair. Aristotle said that youth are easily deceived because they are quick to hope. It almost sounds as though he was describing a negative character trait. I disagree, hope is beautiful, it is innocent, it is promising and it is dreaming about something better beyond the horizon. Hope is something we all need.

I remember doing a clinical rotation just out of college 22 years ago. I was working in a rehabilitation facility and had a patient with a recent amputation. I was still so naive. During a team meeting, a surgeon had remarked that the patient wasn’t doing well, and additional amputations might be needed.

He was concerned that our current treatment goals may be giving his patient false hope. That moment stays with me, I couldn’t help but think, but what if hope is all this man has right now? I questioned my role as a therapist, was I to take hope away?

Parents struggle with finding this balance as well. On one extreme there are parents who will send their children off to college with the belief that unicorns prance and play at the end of the rainbow.

Unrealistic? Yes, but hopeful. On the other end there are children who are never provided with a glimmer of hope. They are told of all the worlds ills, wars, diseases, financial ruin, physical and emotional hurts.

I see some of these children in school. Many can talk about TV news stories with great detail, and the fear is visible in their eyes. Too much graphic talk and news stories can cause a young child to believe the horrors are occurring right outside their door. Their hope is chipped away, next anxiety and fear set in. As parents we need to remind our children of all the reasons to maintain hope. Remind them that there are police officers and soldiers fighting to keep us safe, doctors are finding cures and treatments, there are strangers helping each other rebuild, and that great people often rise in the darkest times.

Find the balance in your parenting style so that your child is prepared for the world, and hopeful that it can be made better.

Many years ago I worked with a child who was legally blind, autistic, had albinism and had just arrived in the US at the age of 5 saying only “Mama” and “pee-pee”. He previously lived in a remote area of his native country with his grandmother and many cousins. My boss at the time was dumbfounded.

Convinced there was little we could do to help he asked me to evaluate him and he would try to find a placement elsewhere. This year that young man is graduating from his public school, he speaks well, argues even better, runs cross-country, track and wrestles. He reads and he writes. He can make phone calls and send emails. He has friends and is an important part of his school community. He wants a job, a girlfriend with blond hair, and to be independent. He has hope. And he shared it with everyone who touched his life, because hope is contagious.

Hope. The longer you hold onto it, the more it can be shared. Catch it, nurture it and pass it onto to your children. Most importantly, never destroy it.

Shore Recipes

Hawaiian fine artist

The lure of spring brings me outdoors to enjoy some activity, and grilling is one of my favorites. Grilled dough flats with vegetables are so versatile, this can be a whole meal simply by adding your favorite protein. We’ve used chicken, pork tenderloin, steak and seafood, and each is equally good. I usually buy my dough from a local deli or grocery store, but you could make your own if you are feeling like Martha Stewart. Each ball makes 6-7 generous servings.

Grilled Dough Flats 1 lb fresh pizza dough Extra-virgin olive oil-EVOO Eggplant Yellow and green pepper

Herbed sea salt Zucchini Red onion

Drizzle a generous amount of EVOO in a shallow bowl.

Using kitchen shears cut room temperature bread dough into 6-8 pieces. Dip in olive oil and massage between your open palms until it is approximately 5 inches in diameter. Continue until all the dough is used. Slice the vegetables about one-quarter inch thick and brush with EVOO. Sprinkle with the herbed sea salt and place vegetables and bread on a hot grill. The bread will be done quickly, about 2 minutes on each side. Grill the vegetables to your desired doneness, usually about 3 minutes a side for the peppers and zucchini. The eggplant and onions are closer to 4 minutes per side.

Arrange the vegetables on the grilled dough flats. Add fresh tomatoes and a sprinkle of asiago cheese. Drizzle with balsamic vinegar, EVOO, or pesto.

Money Matters Identity Theft Scams Targeting Baby Boomer Nest Eggs are on the Rise

Identity theft targeting baby boomers is on the rise, as cyber criminals focus their efforts on the massive number of well-funded retirement nest eggs and clean credit histories this generation of Americans has spent years building. Identity fraud is on the rise, and baby boomers heading toward retirement are particularly vulnerable. In 2014, the Federal Trade Commission reported that cases of identity fraud targeting adults age 50 and older are on the rise, accounting for 37 percent of ID theft complaints reported in 2013.

“But considering the overwhelming data that shows just how targeted boomers are by increasingly sophisticated criminals, even the most aloof individual can be taken advantage of under the right circumstances.”

Although scams against the elderly (age 70 and older) are still a problem, baby boomers are not likely to be taken by the same old-fashioned strategies involving sweepstakes scams, or the Grandparent hoax in which thieves call an elderly person and pose as their grandchild in need of financial help. In fact, memory limitations and disorientation common in advanced age, combined with isolation and loneliness makes many elderly people much more vulnerable to the old-school scams that most people know to avoid.

Large-scale data breaches among high profile retailers like Target and Neiman Marcus have focused attention on the risks consumers face keeping their personal information secure. Whether they are targeted online, through snail mail, by strangers or by trusted caregivers, the 10,000 baby boomers streaming into retirement every day are particularly appealing to identity thieves who view each one as nest egg waiting to be looted.

But boomers are in a different situation. Their awareness of antiquated schemes give many a false sense of security since they know to look out for obvious cons, but they pay too little attention to the pervasive nature of new, sophisticated threats that surface daily—most prevalently those hidden in innocent-looking emails.

Boomers are besieged by criminals operating schemes to swindle them out of their bank information, tax refunds, Medicare benefits and retirement savings, and many don’t realize it. ID thieves have increasingly sophisticated ways of stealing personal information and using it to open new credit card accounts, take out loans, drain existing bank accounts and even get driver’s licenses issued in the victim’s name. By the time many victims realize anything is amiss, it is already too late.

Skillender, like a growing number of retirement advisors nationwide, is doing his part to heighten awareness of the real threat identity theft poses to baby boomers’ financial well being by conducting educational workshops at local libraries and community centers in Monmouth and Ocean Counties.

For most baby boomers, credit-monitoring services, computer security software and even identity theft insurance are already familiar tools for maintaining cyber security. It is important to note that retiree’s nest eggs are at a heightened risk of theft after age 50, and cyber thieves are relentless when it comes to breaching any available weakness in security measures. A professional retirement advisor can provide additional information and guidance on the best ways to protect retirement funds from cyber criminals.

Despite the fact that most baby boomers are generally more tech savvy than older seniors, they can be susceptible to scams for a number of reasons. Age-related issues like memory lapses and more serious conditions such as dementia can render a person less likely to check credit reports and bank accounts regularly for unauthorized use. Equally troubling is the fact that baby boomers grew up in the 1950s and 60s, a time when they were more than likely raised to be polite, which may make some reluctant to question the motives of a suspected scammer.

Making the Drop DaveySky Surfboards

I love interviewing entrepreneurs. Young ones. Making their marks on an industry.

Guys like Dave Kaminsky, owner of DaveySky Surfboards in Manasquan, NJ. He’s a surfer, sure. But, he also studied underwater robotics and climate change at Rutgers University. This guy knows the ocean.

Surfers. Dave’s mission is pretty straight forward. He just wants you to have more fun doing what you love. Pretty simple, right? Well, it’s more than that.

But, we’ll let him tell you……

08742 — So, tell us about how you made the big leap, your own business…. building surfboards for a living?

DK — I had a really bad experience with a very expensive surfboard that I had shipped to me while surfing in Australia. In small waves, boom, the indestructible surfboard wasn’t holding up whatsoever. So, after that, I decided to build my own boards, just for me.

Then friends asked for me to build them one, the so on and so forth, before I knew it, I was in business.

08742 — So, off the rack surfboards just didn’t do it for you?

DK — No, I wanted to design and shape boards that we’re for the East Coast waves.

Designs and colors schemes that were more personal. Surfers actually like a board that is their own. Plus, durability was key to my build. I wanted to make surfing a better experience all around. Look, you (surfers) are in the water paddling 95% of the time, 1% waiting on the wave, and 4% actually surfing. So, I want to make that experience better all the way around.

08742 — “Over my dead body” is an old term. But, as long as you run this business you will never……

DK — Sacrifice quality. I refuse to budge on the durability of a surfboard.

08742 — What’s your true motivation?

DK — What stokes me out the most is when I can bring personalization to a surfboard.

When a client tells me how much the board has changed his or her surfing, and that they are just simply having more fun in the water.

08742 — Custom vs. off the rack. Tell us about your custom options.

DK — Well, first, all of our surfboards start with a base board which in and of itself is 100% American made materials and made right here in Manasquan. We do a full evaluation of your body size, surfing style, ability, overall design. All the options are a la carte. But, if you want a standard board without all the extras, we do that.

Coach Me Christy The Happiness Formula

Okay, so in last month’s 08742 Living Coach Me Christy article, you learned that happiness is something you create – not something that happens to you. Happy people have the state of mind to succeed: So happiness comes first!

But HOW do you achieve that state of happiness?

As we discussed, scientists, especially positive psychologists like Martin Seligman, have calculated the exact aspects of happiness: “The Happiness Formula.” No, it’s not a complicated mathematical equation filled with symbols that will make you recall algebra…no worries. It’s a simple idea made famous by the father of positive psychology, Marin Seligman: Happiness = S (your genetic set-point) + C (your circumstances) + V (your voluntary control).

S, your genetic set-point, is how happy a person you are at birth - the chemistry and brain structure that dictates how happy you are naturally. For example, last month I left you with a challenge: To determine whether you are lucky or unlucky. (If you did not get to do the challenge, see the April issue on the 08742 Living Facebook page.) People who consider themselves “unlucky” are those at a lower, genetic set-point, seeing the negative in every situation.

People who consider themselves “lucky” have a higher genetic set-point, seeing the positive in every situation. Recognizing how you naturally interpret situations goes a long way in shifting your “happiness total.” Let’s look at the other two factors: C, are your circumstances - the state of your life.

The belief has been that circumstance was the key to happiness – but scientists have discovered very few circumstances increase our happiness.

Living in a wealthy democracy and having a strong social network are the only two factors that can have major impact. Others, like being rich, being healthy, being educated or being a certain race have little to no effect on long-term happiness. So, being in the United States (arguably) and having lots of friends and loved ones are major factors.

Here’s the kicker, though: V – aspects in our voluntary control – is the key to being and staying happy because it is the one factor we can actively and assertively change – and it has the strong impact.

Let’s talk about Jean to see how this works.

Jean, has an average genetic set-point (S), wants to be happy, and arises each morning listing all the things she can do to make herself happy.

She will go shopping and get those shoes she wants. She looks forward to that promotion at work. She will entice her husband with a romantic dinner. She will make cookies for the kids.

Lots of ways to make herself happy.

Then, she gets on the scale and discovers she has gained three pounds. And her hair just won’t do what she wants. She was never very pretty. That’s what her father told her. Then, an unexpected bill comes in the mail – and now she does not have the money in the budget for the shoes. She checks her investments online. More bad news. She angrily drives to the office, finding out her boss gave the promotion to that jerk in accounting. Just like at her last job, she gets passed over. All the things that would have made her happy did not happen. She doesn’t feel like making the damn cookies or the romantic dinner, instead ruminating on her crappy day while she makes leftovers. She can’t help thinking if she had only taken those accounting courses in college. But she did not have the money. And she is too stupid anyway. She goes to bed hoping tomorrow will be a better day.

Like most of us, Jean is relying on ONE part of the equation: C, circumstance. But we can change Jean’s day and Jean’s life.

We can change your life.

We just focus on V – the aspects of your level of happiness which are in your control – and the scientifically proven key to maintaining happiness. That V is composed of: (1) The way you interpret your past, (2) The way your live your present, and (3) The way you see your future.

Basically, V is how you gauge your reality.

What in your past still bothers you or effects your current behavior or choices? How do you characterize your present? What dictates how you view your future?

In next month’s Coach Me Christy article, we will discuss the first V-factor: How to tackle your past, erase grief and guilt, and release yourself from the ways memories tie you down.

To prepare to explore how you interpret your past, I want you to make a list of things that bother you about your past: Failures, embarrassing situations, losses, things you are still grieving over. If you want, take a deeper look: How do those memories effect what you do and do not do each day?

When I do this exercise in The Happiness Path Workshop, people have an average of thirty items on their lists! Most of us have things that really bother us forever: Next month we will talk about how to handle that past pain to raise that V value of the Happiness Formula!

Rover Rescue Second Chances

Unbreakable. If I could choose one word to describe a dog’s spirit, that would be it.

Turning my anger into a celebration of survival opened my eyes.

Despite the mental, physical, and emotional pain Julius has endured, he is resilient. He still wants to trust people. He wants to be outside in the fresh spring air, have his ears scratched, and munch on delicious treats.

He reminded me of a lesson, that, in the hustle and bustle of daily life can be easily forgotten.

For the month of April, I worked with the adult dogs at a place in the sanctuary named The Clubhouse. This area has two buildings with the most diverse population of dogs. Some big, some small, some old, some young, some frightened, some friendly. From a large shepherd mix with pica, a disorder causing him to eat non-food materials like dirt and blankets, to a shih-tzu mix with heartworm, to a feral reservation dog, they certainly have it all.

Julius is a symbol of second chances. He suffered intense neurological problems and seizures, and rescue groups pooled their efforts, worked hard, and secured him a second chance. Julius was hurt by people he initially loved and trusted, and gave people a second chance. He let the caregivers enter his life and gently formed a bond with them. He let me befriend him and shared with me his lessons of love, patience, and forgiveness.

One who has truly touched my heart is a dog named Julius. He originally came from a rescue group at a Petsmart in Louisiana.

Julius came from a horrible abuse situation. He was beaten so badly that it left him with permanent neurological damage and seizures. He cannot walk in a straight line and spins in circles in his run for the majority of the day.

Working in rescue is difficult, and we come across things we want to forget. We see things we wish could be unseen, but will be engraved somewhere in our brain forever. It’s important to control our perspective.

We can let the sadness, anger, and trauma paralyze us and turn away from it all. Or, we can forge onwards, let all of our experiences motivate us and fuel our passion to become the best rescuers, animal lovers, pet parents, and people we can be. Everything in life can be a gift, we just have to see it as so.

First meeting Julius and hearing his story, I was crushed. The sadness quickly morphed into rage and an overwhelming desire to ensure his abusers had been properly dealt with. Then I realized that the rage wasn’t helping anyone. A more productive use of my energy would be to make Julius’s current life as happy as possible.

Students of 08742 Four Boro Athletes Sign National Letters of Intent While millions of high school seniors across the country eagerly await word from their chosen colleges, the athletic coaches at many of the same colleges are just as eagerly anticipating decisions from some of the nation’s top student athletes, students who’ve received National Letters of Intent, committing them to continuing their athletic pursuits at the college level.

Feb. 3 marks the opening of the National Letter of Intent (NLI) signing period, when student athletes who compete in football, field hockey, soccer, track & field, cross country and men’s water polo commit to their chosen colleges. The signing period extends through the spring, and for certain sports, the summer, during which time approximately 36,000 student-athletes will take the final step in the recruiting process by signing a Letter of Intent with one of the more than 600 participating NCAA Division I & II colleges and universities.

Among this year’s group of students to sign National Letters of Intent are a record six members of Point Pleasant Borough High School’s Class of 2016!

This spring, Collin Ansbach, Noah Husack, Jack Ehrhardt and Amy Bergquist joined Lauren Onnembo and Bill Buttino, both of whom previously committed to continue their lacrosse careers at Georgian Court and Post University respectively, by inking deals to continue their athletic careers at the collegiate level.

But three days after an impromptu college visit, during which Collin met with the Special Teams Coach and toured the facilities, Collin was verbally committed to Wagner.

A common fantasy football strategy advises players to draft their quarterback and kicker from the same NFL team. The rationale being that it provides more consistent combined performance, producing better outcomes and resulting in more points. Apparently, Staten Island’s Wagner College took a cue from the fantasy playbook, tapping Point Pleasant Borough High School’s quarterback and kicker for their football program.

The signing came as an additional surprise for Collin who’s only been playing football for four years.

“I played soccer since I was little,” Collin said. “I had always wanted to play football but my mother was afraid I’d get hurt.”

Torn ACL notwithstanding, Collin has excelled in football and has been named to the All B-South Division team for the past two consecutive years.

Noah also earned a spot on this year’s All B-South Division Team in addition to being named to the Third Team, All Shore Conference. Noah was also the Fall 2015 Season’s team MVP and was named B-South Offensive Player of the Year.

On March 17, Point Pleasant Boro Panthers quarterback Noah Husak and kicker Collin Ansbach took the final step in the collegiate athletics recruitment process, when they both signed National Letters of Intent with the Wagner Seahawks Football Team.

“Both Noah and Collin have worked hard throughout their high school football careers,” said Point Pleasant Borough High School Varsity Football Coach Sean Henry. The awards they’ve won and their being recruited by a Division I school gives an indication of their playing ability.

Their Letter of Intent signing is only the latest of many, shared experience between the 18-year-olds. In addition to serving integral roles on the Panthers Varsity Football Team, Collin and Noah spend time together off the field, taking shared classes and even working together at a local restaurant. Both Collin and Noah are also active volunteers in the Challenger Special Needs Football program and both boys have a twin brother. So when Noah’s commitment with the Division I school was being finalized and his new coach mentioned recruiting a kicker, Noah’s thoughts immediately went to Collin.

“But in addition to being outstanding athletes, they’re also great people,” Coach Henry said, citing the boys’ involvement in the Challenger special needs football league. “It [the NLI signing] couldn’t happen to better people. They’ve earned everything that’s coming their way and I’m incredibly proud of them.”

Coach Henry joined Athletic Director Chris Ferrone, Point Pleasant Borough High School Principal Kurt Karcich and Superintendent of Schools Vincent S. Smith, and both Noah and Collin’s families as the boys officially became Wagner Seahawks.

A mid-season injury, however, had Collin’s focus placed squarely on Division III schools, he said, “I tore my ACL during the second game of the [Varsity Football] season, and although I continued to play on the injury, I thought my chances of committing to a Division I school were pretty slim.”

Collin and Noah will head to Wagner in August to begin an intensive training schedule. Collin plans to pursue a career in nursing while Noah will study business administration or accounting.

On April 15, Jack Ehrhardt became the Class of 2016’s fifth member to sign a National Letter of Intent after he committed to continue competing in Track & Field at Franklin Pierce University.

“This is a well deserved honor, one that he has worked hard, for years, to achieve,” he said.

Currently competing in the High Jump, Long Jump and Javelin, Jack hopes to eventually become a decathlete, competing in 10 track & field events – a goal, that given his competitive nature and ambition is not just possible but likely probable.

It was standing room only in the school’s Athletic Office as a crowd of spectators, watching another outstanding Boro athlete put a close to the recruiting process and begin the transition to a collegiate athlete.

“Jack is very competitive,” Diane Ehrhardt said of her son.

“He always strives to beat his own records, compiling lists of individual goals before each event and then working to achieve those goals. He puts a lot of pressure on himself to consistently achieve.”

Parents Diane and Chris Ehrhardt, Track & Field Coach Mike Colonna, Athletic Director Chris Ferrone, Principal Kurt Karcich and Superintendent of Schools Vincent S. Smith were in attendance as Jack took the ceremonial last step in the recruiting phase and signed the documents that would transform him from a Point Pleasant Borough Panther into a Franklin Pierce Raven.

And according to Coach Colonna, that dedication pays off, he said, “Jack’s key event is Javelin, but a torn UCL, meant he couldn’t compete for 10 months, so instead he put all his focus into improving his High Jump and Long Jump performance. He’s now on target to beat the school record this season.

His dedication is unrivaled.”

“I liked everything about Franklin Pierce,” Jack said of the Division II school.

“I visited Ryder, Rowan and Stonehill, but I Franklin Pierce was the right choice for me. I loved the atmosphere and the campus and the coaches are great.”

As Jack lauded his future coaches, his current coach, Coach Mike Colonna, reserved praise for Jack, saying, “Jack is an incredibly dedicated multi-sport athlete and I could not be prouder than I am right now.”

That dedication will be an asset when Jack heads to Franklin Pierce this fall, where he plans to study Elementary Education.

Amy Bergquist Point Pleasant Borough High School’s Athletic Office was in use once again when, a week later, Boro senior Amy Bergquist committed to play golf at East Stroudsburg University.

Her National Letter of Intent signing was the final step in Amy’s lengthy recruiting experience that began with her planning to pursue soccer at the college level.

“I created a recruiting website through NCSA [National Collegiate Scouting Association], which helps match high school athletes with college athletic coaches,” Amy said. “I posted my transcripts and soccer highlight reel, fully expecting to focus on soccer.”

In accordance with the website template, however, Amy was prompted to input her records in every sport in which she competes. Her golf scores soon captured the attention of East Stroudsburg’s golf coach, who contacted Point Pleasant Borough High School Golf Coach Pete Casalino to learn more about Amy. “Amy is a committed athlete who knows how to manage her game,” said Coach Casalino. “She puts in the time both off-season and on and, as a result, she has become proficient in consistently performing well.

“East Stroudsburg is lucky to have Amy as a golfer,” he said. “She could have very easily pursued soccer at the collegiate level; her decision to play golf is to the university’s benefit.”

For Amy, East Stroudsburg was a perfect fit. Citing the university’s atmosphere, coach and future teammates as the primary factors in her decision, one of the most compelling reasons Amy selected East Stroudsburg was the excellent reputation of the undergraduate Athletic Training program offered at the school.

“I want to pursue a career as an Athletic Trainer and East Stroudsburg has a great program for that,” she said. “The school’s current Athletic Director is an alumni of the program and I was able to speak with her and learn more about the program.”

Though for some students balancing a busy athletic schedule with an intense academic schedule would be a challenge, college will likely feel like a break of sorts given the hectic schedule she’s maintained throughout her high school career. An excellent student, Amy holds an A-average in a schedule filled with AP and Honors classes, while also serving as a member of the soccer and golf teams, the Key Club, Spanish Club and Competition, Concert and Pep Bands and working a part-time job.

“Each of these athletes leave a tremendous legacy of athletic success,” said Athletic Director Chris Ferrone. “It has been both an honor and a privilege to watch their performance in their respective sports. I am extremely proud of them all.”

Superintendent of Schools Vincent S. Smith, who witnessed all the signings, also reflected on the remarkable achievements of the student athletes.

“There is no greater testament to our district academic and co-curricular programs than the achievement of our students,” said Superintendent Smith. “”The fact that so many of our students were so actively recruited by top universities and colleges underscores the integral role sports can play in a student’s life. I look forward to following our students’ continued successes for the remainder of high school and beyond.”

The Muse Chorus Tour Takes Students Outside the Classroom

Sometimes getting out of the classroom can be the best way to learn. This is especially true of subjects that require a little bit more creativity than most. This can mean shooting off a toy rocket during science class, trying on clothes from different eras during history class, or going to a reading during English class.

In April, Terry Bojanowski, Point Pleasant Borough Schools’ Choral Director and students from the schools’ choir took it to the next level.

Students and teachers traveled to Cleveland and Chicago for a whirlwind weekend of music and performing arts, headlined by their very own performance of selections from their Festival repertoire on stage at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

The group attended Beautiful: The Carole King Musical, a Broadway play chronicling the life of singer and songwriter at the Cleveland Playhouse on Thursday night.

From Cleveland, the group drove to Chicago to see one of their own, Cassidy Hagel.

Cassidy, a 7th-grader at Memorial Middle School, is in the National Touring Company cast of Matilda, The Musical, her second Broadway national tour.

“It was so good to see her,” Mrs. Bojanowski said.

Before Matilda, Cassidy toured with the company for Billy Elliot when she was just 8 years old, as Alison Summers, Ballet Girl.

After Matilda, the Point Pleasant choir group went to the World Strides National Heritage Music Festival in Chicago.

The group was among 41 choirs, bands, and orchestras competing on stage, with groups from around the country.

The groups worked on stage with university professors in a clinic that followed each performance.

Afterwards, there were many awards to give out, a number of which went to Point Pleasant High School choral groups.

The Women’s Ensemble team and the Show Choir each won gold, while the Mixed Chorus and the Men’s Show Choir each won silver.

There were also eight Point Pleasant singers to receive Maestro Awards, a series of awards selected by the judges for excellence in singing a solo section of a larger choral piece. The eight were Kevin Jasaitis and Olivia Youngman for solos in “Libiamo” from the opera La Traviata by Verdi, performed in the Mixed Chorus performance; Cecilia Zitarosa, Kassandra Armendo, Rebecca Hobba, Margaret Stupar, Emily Mickle, and Stefanie Wittmann for solos during “Wade in the Water,” a spiritual song that dates back to the beginning of last century.

Point Boro High Students Design Video Game for Ocean of Love The benefits of play in child development have been well established; play not only contributes to children’s cognitive, physical, and social development but it also helps them gain valuable communication and self-expression skills. Through play, children learn to interact with and interpret their world.

dedicated team of social workers helps support the emotional needs of families through the provision of counseling for children and families, support groups and more, while also looking for opportunities to brighten children’s treatment experience.

Enter Point Pleasant Borough High School teacher Nick Gattuso and his Advanced Software Engineering Class. Mr. Gattuso, whose approach to computer programming – both as a teacher and in practice – has been heavily influenced by a moral imperative to make a positive difference in the lives of others, has a long history of designing classroom projects around specific charitable causes. Projects are introduced and the students, assembled into traditional project management teams, with a resource manager, technical manager and lead programmer, work together to complete the project. Over the past several years, students in Mr. Gattuso’s classes have developed a number of applications and websites for various organizations, including, the PALS suite of assistive learning apps designed for Point Pleasant Borough High School’s Multiply Disabled/Transition class; Point Pleasant Borough High School’s school store website, the proceeds from which helped support the school’s Transition program; and the organization Friends of Jason, which was established to honor Jason Condit, a 10-year-old New Jersey boy who lost his battle with cancer in 2014. Fourteen years ago, Mr. Gattuso’s class also designed the first rendition of the Ocean of Love website as well as the organization’s mascot – Sammy the Seal, which is still in use today.

Play is even more critical for children who are hospitalized or suffering from serious or chronic illness. For these children, play can help facilitate the development of effective coping strategies, while serving the dual purpose of reducing stress and anxiety and improving overall attitude, which has been proven to positively affect healing.

Organizations like the Toms River-based Ocean of Love for Children With Cancer, has made it their mission to support Ocean County children and their families through one of the most difficult experiences they’ll endure.

Since its founding in 1988, Ocean of Love has helped over 450 children with cancer, providing the financial and emotional support necessary for them to experience the “normal” joys of childhood.

“Each of our families are treated as friends . . . they are not a number or name without a face,” reads the organization’s Charity profile. “Many consider us a lifeline to hold onto at any time, day or night.”

The financial assistance provided by Ocean of Love, which can help cover the costs of household, food, travel and other expenses, allows families focus on supporting children through their illness. Ocean of Love’s

Students of 08742 Advanced Placement Tests

to the first week of May, the more intense and stressful the atmosphere can get. Advanced Placement tests are earlier in the year than traditional finals for other classes, as they follow the typical testing schedule for most college classes. A plus to this is that after AP tests are over, so is the bulk of the curriculum for the class, and students can take the remaining two months of school to focus on other courses or start getting ready for graduation once the heavy workload of their AP classes has lightened up.

Throughout most of North America, Advanced Placement (or AP) classes are a great opportunity for students to get ahead and work towards college credit while still in high school. Created by the College Board, AP Classes are especially useful to students at Point Beach High School; since Point Beach is too small to offer honors classes, most students treat AP-level classes as such, sometimes taking up to three or four in both their junior or senior years. Some of the most common classes are AP English (typically Language and Composition for juniors, and Literature and Composition for seniors), AP sciences such as biology, chemistry, or physics, or AP Calculus AB—the daring few complete AB in their junior year and venture on to BC their senior year.

Other AP classes, such as AP music theory and AP Spanish, are offered to students wishing to further pursue an academic interest they might wish to study in college, and maybe get a head start on amassing credit they’ll need to complete their future major or area of interest.

However, AP tests are generally very academically rigorous: the scale for scoring goes from a one to a five, with five being the best and one being the worst. Most colleges who accept AP credits towards a student’s degree require at least a four or a five for the work to be acknowledged.

Most will put away hours studying towards the end of April, and the weekend before testing week starts, few AP students will be seen without a study guide or textbook nearby. All this preparation is worth it though, for students whose scores will either get them into the college of their dreams, or out of a class they don’t want to take again.

Point Beach Players Produce Another Winner!

The Point Beach Players of the PPBHS Drama Club rarely fail to produce a spectacular production, and the 2016 spring musical was no exception.

Each year, the Drama Club puts on two productions: the fall play and the spring musical. Due to its substantial cast, lively script and catchy tunes, and the hard work put in by the club’s members and advisors, the musical is popular amongst students, teachers, and parents alike. Over the span of its three performances, the Players’ portrayal of the 1950’s Broadway hit Guys and Dolls captured the hearts of its audience, who hummed and laughed along with each roll of the dice.

As Detroit’s patrons demand with increasing urgency, “where’s the action, where’s the game?” he scrambles to find a new location for his long-running floating crap game while trying to appease his fiancée of fourteen years, Miss Adelaide, played by Emma Mehalick. Meanwhile, Sky, a notorious gambler whose luck aids him in his habit for wild bets, is in slightly over his head: he has agreed to a bet that requires him to win the heart of Sergeant Sarah Brown, a strict “mission doll” played by Nina Colagiovanni.

In a whirlwind of comedy, music, and pinstripe suits, the spring musical was not only a well-executed performance by everyone involved in bringing it to life, but also a chance for students both on the stage and off to showcase both their individual talents and the teamwork they all played a part in to bring a story to life. From the streets (and sewers) of Broadway to the Hot Box, Guys and Dolls left both its cast and audience in eager anticipation of what will come next year for the Beach Players.

Written and performed initially in 1950 by Frank Loesser, Guys and Dolls has endured for over sixty years within the culture of theater, both through wide-scale revivals and within the context of smaller performances, such as the Beach’s own production. The play focuses on two gamblers—Nathan Detroit, played by Chase Lovgren, and Sky Masterson, played by Connor Dosch—and their exploits in both New York City’s crap-shooting scene and within their own love lives.

“Personal” by Lee Child A book review by Brian Favretto

“Random death, out of nowhere, anytime, anyplace, no notice, no warning. Every minute of every day. No relief. The stress becomes unbearable.” Snipers.

hunter. The bullet that splatters him with his neighbor’s blood comfirms this. “It’s not the same with a sniper out there”. For Jack Reacher it now becomes “personal”. The bullet was meant for him.

by Lee Child that stars his larger-than-life hero, Jack Reacher, a retired U.S. Army Military Policeman. He is a drifter, a nomad. He is nicknamed Sherlock Homeless by the peers of his past. His possessions include one set of clothes, which he throws away and replaces every three days, as well as a pocket toothbrush. No house, no car, no credit cards, and not even a phone.

He rides around the country on buses, hitches rides, and walks aimlessly, and trouble always seems to find him.

With a partner that is learning as she goes, Reacher and Nice find themselves in several precarious situations, with the fast-thinking Reacher always keeping a step ahead. The leads become fruitful, and before I knew it, two local gang/mafia factions have become a primary focus of the investigation. This seemed to have been thrown in as a subplot, but as the book progresses, one group becomes essential to leading Reacher to the shooter (s). For added drama, the leader of this gang, dubbed “Little Joey” because he is a 7 foot tall, pill-popping drug fiend, engages the otherwise abnormally large 6ft. 5in. tall Jack Reacher in an epic fistfight. The brawl goes on for pages, and rivals the battle of good vs. evil between Rocky Balboa and Ivan Drago in Rocky IV.

“Personal” begins with Reacher on a bus, lazily scanning an abandoned “Army Times” newspaper when he sees a message in the classifieds directed at him, which pulls him back into his military past. Returning a 20 year old favor for a General, he agrees to help track down a sniper (or snipers) who took a shot at the president of France in Paris, from 1,400 yards away.

Why Reacher? There’s more to it than a 20 year old favor. Working with Russian and British Intelligence, the worldwide list of shooters good enough to land an accurate shot from that distance is about four; one of whom was recently released from a 15 year prison sentence, sent there by a U.S. Army Investigator — you guessed it…

Jack Reacher.

An upcoming G8 Summit looms in London, as Reacher and his crew race to find the shooter (or shooters) before eight of the world leaders are gathered together as one target. As is par for the course, Reacher is teamed up with Casey Nice, a 28 year old woman who is a rookie CIA analyst with no field experience. As they head to Paris to comb the crime scene, and then to London to develop leads, Reacher can’t help but wonder if he has become the hunted rather than the

In “Personal”, Lee Child displays his genius in detailing how to out-think your adversary, and how to tactfully overcome disadvantaged situations. Child is also a master at ending almost each chapter in suspense, making it hard to put the book down, or causing me to at least peek at the first few lines of the next chapter.

This is not the first book I’ve read in the Jack Reacher series, but it is the first that left me confused in one or two places, yet all the loose ends are thoughtfully summarized in the last chapter, albeit abruptly. This is also the first Reacher novel that I’ve read (out of order) that alluded to seemingly important parts of a previous novel. To the Reacher faithful this is not a big deal, but to a Reacher fan that indulges randomly, it can be a little disheartening. If you’re willing to give “Personal” a shot, reserve your copy at the Point Pleasant Public Library, and be sure to catch the small tribute Reacher pays to his mother (a Reacher rarity) in the first half of the book, and the interesting way in which Ms. Nice gets her first kill near the end.

(VIDEO GAME FOR OCEAN OF LOVE, continued) Anxious to work with the organization again, Mr. Gattuso contacted Ocean of Love earlier this year to offer his class’s design services.

After a discussion with organization social workers Danielle Bear and Kelsey Windisch, the concept for Cell Destroyer was born.

“Cell Destroyer is video game modeled after the class Pac-Man game,” said Mr. Gattuso. “Instead of Pac-Man, Ocean of Love mascot Sammy the Seal is the player’s icon and instead of eating dots, Sammy ‘eats’ cancer cells. Throughout the game play, Sammy moves around the game board gobbling up the cancer cells to effectively ‘beat cancer.’”

Mr. Gattuso said his student, Point Pleasant Borough High School senior Max Rauffer, was the game’s lead designer.

“Max worked very hard to design a game that’s easily accessible to children of all ages and abilities and is also a lot of fun,” Mr. Gattuso said.

On Friday, April 22, Max unveiled the game in a special demonstration for Ms. Baer and Ms. Windisch.

“This is wonderful,” Ms. Windisch said of the game. “It allows the children to visualize what’s going on inside their bodies.”

“The app looks like a lot of fun and will provide much needed entertainment for the children during the long days and weeks and months of their treatment,” added Ms. Baer.

According to Max, the game can run in the browser from the website or can be downloaded and run as an application on any computer and certain mobile devices.

During a scheduled class trip on May 20, Mr. Gattuso’s class plans to make a stop at the Ocean of Love headquarters in Toms River to install the game on the organization’s computers.

“I am grateful to Mr. Gattuso for continuing to demonstrate to our students, the importance of helping others,” said Superintendent of Schools Vincent Smith. “His classes put into practice, skills that will not only benefit his students’ future success but also make a positive difference in the lives of others.

“Engaging in regular play and participation in fun and enjoyable activities can have a transformative affect on one’s outlook,” said the superintendent.

“Through their work on these games and apps, Mr. Gattuso’s students are changing and improving lives and contributing, in a unique way, to the fight against cancer.”

The Power of Positive Thinking Reasons to Start Meditating Now

Meditation has been gaining coverage in the media in recent years. It is being practiced in schools, corporations, hospitals, prisons, and various other facilities. There is a substantial amount of scientific research and evidence to document the many benefits of meditation. These practices have been shown to help patients deal with chronic illness and pain. In schools, students have been shown to be more focused, produce higher test scores, and lower violence in some environments. A lower burn out rate is noted in the corporate world.

I can personally attest to the healing benefits of meditation. The panic attacks that I suffered from since age eight have ceased. I can deal with stress and anxiety a lot better, and feel much more focused. It produces a general sense of well-being and compassion.

Yes, meditation can do this. It is that powerful. Think of it as an exercise for the mind.

Practice and positive changes unfold. There are various forms of meditation.

Try a few and see which resonates with you.

A meditation practice can seem overwhelming and impossible when first beginning, it passes. We often think that our minds must be void of thoughts, but that is not the case.

If you are breathing, alive, and human you have thoughts. It is rather a shift in our mind pattern; what we do with our thoughts and how we view them.

Think of your inner, true self as a spy that is observing all that is going on in the mind and body, without attaching stories to them. Just noticing. The following are some tips to get started. Find a comfortable seat in a chair, or on a cushion with hips higher than knees. Sit up tall, but relaxed, resisting the urge to contract muscles unnecessarily. Close the eyes, or gaze down the tip of the nose.

Present and Mindful Meditation Based on techniques taught by Rebecca Eldridge and Jon Kabat-Zinn 1. Begin to observe the body, physical body. Notice any sensations in the body without attaching any labels. Stiff, or painful areas may be noticed first, but then scan all areas of the body with your mind.

Observe any tingling, or areas void of stimulation. Notice the entire body. Remain here for ten breaths.

2. Next, observe the breath. Feel it flow in and out of the nostrils. Paying attention to all of the spaces in the body it seems to fill. Feel the rise and fall of the different spaces in the body that breath reaches. Notice all aspects of breath. Temperature, length, texture. Remain here for ten breaths.

3. Shift the awareness to notice any sounds you are hearing. Perhaps it’s the sound of your own breath, or sounds in the room. Maybe you can hear more distant sounds. Notice all sounds without trying to label their sources. Remain here for ten breaths.

4. Notice the thoughts. Observe how quickly or slowly they enter and leave the mind. Notice the ones that seem to want to stick around longer. Try not to write a movie about the thoughts. Just simply notice them. You can use a visualization of thoughts turning into clouds and drifting away. Remain here for ten breaths.

5. Bring your awareness to notice any feelings that may have arisen. Just be able to sit with those feelings. Not concerned if good, bad, etc. Just observe that you have feelings, as does every human. Remain here for ten breaths.

6. Now focus the attention to all of your senses. Touch, taste, smell, hearing, sight, and intuition, the all knowing, higher self. Notice your entire package, entire entity. Remain here for ten breaths.

7. Finally, let go of any focal point of attention and just remain here. Present in the moment, using breath as the anchor to the here and now. Just be.

Remain here for ten breaths. *You can adjust the amount of breaths you wish to practice with. Begin with five breaths for each section if feeling restless, and expand over time.
