The Power of Positive Thinking Negative Beliefs Harm Your Health by Allison Feehan, N.D., D.Psc, CRMT

It can be hard to believe that our negative thought patterns can be detrimental to our health. In fact, negative beliefs can be harmful and toxic to your health. Clinical trials within the medical profession have been trying to prove for quite some time that when a patient is given a sugar pill, or a fictitious surgery or even a saline solution, their mind can interpret this as a cure or healing. This is called the “placebo effect”. The medical establishment has proven that the “placebo effect” results in the patient getting ‘better’ by 18%-80% of the time. The power of positive thinking.

this neurogenesis is not only associated with the formation of new memories, Allison Feehan but with mood stability, as well,” SiN.D., D.Psc, CRMT mon-Thomas says. Be deliberate about Owner of Integrative your thoughts and how you want to live Healing and Wellness your life and how long you plan to live it. 732.202.6797 523 Main Avenue It’s proven science that you are what you Bay Head, NJ think. Move out of the fear cycle and repeat negative thought patterns. Instill vitality, health, wellness, and peace. You’re not defined by your past, your family history, or what tradition may state to be truth. Internalize your friendly voice and release your negative feelings attached to negative thoughts.

A “nocebo effect” is the direct opposite with a direct opposite effect. Researchers have published multiple cases of those becoming ill or dying based on what they were told. Harm through the power of suggestion, priming someone to think they are ill can often produce the actual symptoms of a disease. This has been documented in the practice of voodoo. Induced vomiting, dizziness, and even death upon being told they have been cursed. Other notable studies have been published around the Chinese-American having a combination of disease and Chinese birth year which Chinese astrology and Chinese medicine consider ill-fated. Studies showed that they did not die younger due to genes, they died younger due to Chinese belief. The negative belief, fear, anxiety, and the breakthrough of negative belief into physical symptoms.

In Health and Wellness

How often do you recite that your “cancer runs in your family” or that “every man in your family has a heart issue”? Martin Seligman terms this as “learned helplessness.” “These negative emotions trigger the amygdala in the limbic brain to send out a red alert that activates the “fight-or-flight” stress response. When the nervous system is in “fight-or-flight,” the body’s self-repair mechanisms don’t function properly, and the body is predisposed to illness. All because you thought yourself sick.” This makes your body less able to control its immune system leaving you wide open to illness and disease. Depression and stress have been linked to inflammation, type 2 diabetes, heart attack, increased risk for disability, and compromised immune function. Negative beliefs fill our bodies with harmful cortisol and epinephrine, while positive beliefs relax our nervous systems and allow our bodies to heal. By changing your thought patterns and beliefs to be more positive, you are actually benefiting your health. You are what you believe and what you believe will come true. Positive belief may not be the only factor for some. A combination of the right healer and positive thoughts can activate the body’s natural ability to heal itself. You are responsible for what you think. You are also responsible for not allowing what others think of you to impact your thought process and belief system. Changing your perspective can change your health. “We know that neural pathways are changing every minute of your entire life and that your brain is generating new cells throughout your life. And

The blustery winds in March still have me pining for something warm, but these days I like a balance of high nutrition and my family primarily wants tasty food that. This soup will satisfy even the pickiest of eaters, and can be called “taco” soup if it’s more their liking. When you have the time, using boned chicken will produce a more flavorful broth, and provide a healthy dose of collagen. Leave the toppings separate and allow everyone to garnish their own, and sit down to a hot, healthy and nutrient packed meal with your family. Enjoy!

Rover Rescue Healthy Eating for Your Pup by Lauren Kehoe

Buying dog food is no longer a simple task. Walk into any pet supply store and you are bombarded with rows of different types of kibble. It can be overwhelming for any dog owner, between ingredients, prices, flashy packaging. Vets and pet store associates can be great resources to find out more about certain types of dog foods. A relatively new trend that has been brought to the table is raw food.

Raw food can be on the pricey side but remember that a 10-lb bag will last longer than 10-lbs of dry food once you had water, oil, protein (depending on the brand). Also, like humans, a healthy, high quality diet will often decrease chances of health issues down the line. This can lead to a lower medical bill, and less trips to the vet.

Raw food often comes in dehydrated form to hold onto nutrients, and pet owners typically mix an oil and a protein. Highly concentrated food is easier to digest, and since you mix in other ingredients, the dog food bag itself lasts longer. Mixes itself are typically made with human grade ingredients.

Lauren Kehoe is an avid animal lover and dog owner.

Raw food can be a great option to connect with your vet about. As with anything, we can only do as much as we can. If it is out of your price range, you can see about mixing it into your dog’s diet occasionally. Or you can look at the dog food you’re currently feeding and see if there may be a better dry kibble option. High quality foods tend to be more nutrient dense, so less it required to feed to a dog than a comparable bargain food. With a little exploration and research, you can find an affordable food that you, your dog, and veterinarian can agree on!

Cooking for your dog may seem odd, as we have been using kibble style dog food for years. But as we advance as a society, so does our knowledge of dog nutrition. Kibble dog food is highly processed and even the higher quality brands tend to come with fillers. Feeding your dog the same type of protein and food daily can result in nutrient deficiencies. With raw food, altering the protein or fats allows a dog to reap the benefits from many kinds of foods. The mix itself is highly concentrated, so dogs can absorb nutrients easier than with typical dry dog food. Like humans switching from a diet of highly processed foods (think frozen meals, chips, cookies, anything with a long ingredient list) to a more whole foods diet (fruits, veggies, nuts), switching a dog from processed kibble to a raw diet has been shown to have health benefits. These may include more energy, healthier weight, and healthier skin, coat, and nails. Every dog is an individual, so a certain diet may affect one dog differently than other. It is always a trial and error process when trying to find the perfect food for your pup.

Shore Decor Biophilic Design By Ashleigh Young Santamaria

Lately, there has been a lot of attention within the wellness industry around the many health and wellness benefits that come from spending time in nature including reduced stress levels, increased attention and focus, higher productivity and a more positive mood. Unfortunately, we tend to spend most of our time indoors whether at home or in the office, especially in the winter months, leaving us little time or opportunity to connect with nature. In the design world, it is now universally acknowledged that the look, feel and ambience of a space can have a huge impact on our overall sense of wellness. That’s where Biophilic design comes in. Hailed as one of the more popular interior design trends happening in both home and commercial spaces, biophilic design is all about bringing natural elements into our space so we can experience the benefits of nature even if we never leave the house. And, this trend can be relatively easy and inexpensive to bring into the home. The trick is to be as authentic as possible by using real materials, so our bodies don’t discount them as fake substitutes. Here are a few ways to bring nature into your space ranging from low to high investment level.

PLANTS

Real plants have many benefits and are a great source of oxygen that purify the air, improving our concentration and general mental state. Snake plants, Areca palms and “Money Plants” have been called out by a NASA study in terms of being best at improving indoor air quality. We’re also seeing living plant walls move from yoga studios like MNDFL in New York City and retail stores like West Elm and Saje into the home which literally makes any space come to life.

NATURAL MATERIALS

Using natural untreated wood, stone, slate and minimally processed fabrics are great ways to mimic the outdoors and make us feel closer to nature. Natural materials and textures, such as wood and stone, provide further sensory benefits through touch, scent and even sound since natural materials can alter the acoustics of a room.

PRESENCE OF WATER

Interior spaces become more engaging when we’re able to see, hear and especially touch water. Moving water creates negative ionization, which is a mild psychological stimulant. If cost and safety concerns are holding you back from creating an indoor meditation pool like the one pictured, try a beautiful piece of art like this one entitled “Frequency” (pictured below) from artist Ray Charles White.

WINDOWS

There is a psychological and physiological importance for us as humans to view what happens in nature and connect to the natural rhythms of daylight. Incorporating large windows or adding French doors into our space, or locating work areas next to a window, especially if we have access to views of natural settings or a plant or tree-filled backyard, helps increase overall well-being and energy levels. Incorporating biophilic elements into our homes will hopefully carry us through Spring when we can finally all get outside and experience the real thing! Happy Decorating.

Fashion Frenzy Fashion is My Passion By Denise Brady Acanfora, Certified Personal Stylist and Owner, The Urban Exchange

Fashion is my passion – it’s what lights me up – it’s what feeds my soul on a daily basis. But community is what I crave. Owning a consignment shop in a small town gives purpose to my passion and cures my craving for the community that I seek. It’s actually less about the clothes and more about the connecting that takes place while you are shopping with us. We chat with every person that comes in to the shop. We always encourage people to come back and shop with us again because our inventory is constantly changing. This is really an invitation to come back again and again so that you become a member of our community.

of changing the store around. This creates the perfect opportunity to connect with our customers. There’s always something ‘new’ to show them. There’s always some cool piece to tell them about. My confidence in knowing my shop inside and out allows me to connect and have meaningful conversations. These conversations create a foundation. This foundation is what our store’s community is built upon. Maya Angelou said it best when she said

“my mission in life is not merely to survive, but to thrive; and to do so with some passion, some compassion, some humor , and some style.”

I took a slight detour from retail a few years ago. My kids were in middle school and I was less busy with car pooling and class parties so I thought it was the perfect time to reestablish my career. So I got my real estate license. It seemed like a great fit for me. I have sold nearly everything else…ready-to-wear, shoes, home furnishings and pharmaceuticals. Why not homes?? I loved all of our office training meetings. I enjoyed meeting other agents and learning ways to better connect with buyers and sellers. I enjoyed planning and setting up for open houses. But I never really felt comfortable about all of the business/technical/legal aspects of real estate. That side of the business never became second nature for me. I feared the buyers and sellers would ask me questions that I would not be able to answer. So I was distracted during conversations. My lack of confidence got in the way of connecting with my buyers and sellers. I am certain it appeared that I had no passion for what I was doing. And I didn’t.

So – you may come in to my shop for a pocketbook but hopefully you will come back again and again because of my passion for what I do. I hope you find your passion and cure your craving !

at a fraction of

Fabulous Fashion the Price!

Then I took a part-time job at the shop. Retail is second nature for me – been doing it since I graduated from college. I love fashion and merchandising. I excel at creating visual displays that speak to people and inspire them to want to wear the looks I pull together. I never tire

RAFTS Honored as “Volunteer of the Year” by Manasquan Mayor and Council

Organization helps local residents find path from addiction to recovery By Denise DiStephan

RAFTS, an organization that helps local residents find their path from addiction to recovery, has been named “Volunteer of the Year” by the Manasquan mayor and council. Mayor Edward Donovan presented a “Volunteer of the Year” plaque to Nicole Federici, a cofounder of RAFTS and Manasquan resident, at the Jan. 22 council meeting. Many other members of the allvolunteer group were at the meeting to mark the occasion. Donovan noted the high number of deaths stemming from abuse of opioids and thanked RAFTS (Recovery Advocates for the Shore) for helping the community address the crisis. “We’re lost 3,000 people last year in New Jersey and it will probably be that high this year,” Donovan said at the meeting, adding that number does not include the thousands saved by the use of Narcan. Narcan is the brand name of naloxone, a drug that blocks the effects of opioids. When asked later what compelled he and council members to honor RAFTS, Donovan said, “RAFTS is an all-volunteer group doing their best to help people in recovery. I have personal knowledge of the drug crisis. I have several friends in rehab and a few who couldn’t sustain their sobriety, who succumbed to opioids. I think RAFTS helps people stay on a path to recovery.” That’s important, Donovan said, because people struggling with addiction need support to find and sustain their own personal pathways to recovery.

“Addiction is a disease, it’s a physical and psychological disease,” he noted. “I think the more support they (addicts) get, the more chance they have of sustaining recovery. I think that’s what RAFTS does, give them that support.” The mayor also noted that RAFTS volunteers include people who are in recovery from drug or alcohol addictions themselves, family members of those struggling with addiction and some who work in the recovery field, all of which brings a diversity and wealth of information and perspectives to the organization’s service to the community. Federici, in an interview, said she and other RAFTS members are grateful for the honor bestowed by Manasquan and hope it helps the group get the word out to the Shore community that help is available. “If people are suffering, reach out for help,” Federici urged. “RAFTS volunteers are here to listen and offer support and resources.” The organization holds a wide range of activities and support group meetings at the Manasquan Recreation Annex, 67 Atlantic Ave., Manasquan. The group also has trained recovery coaches manning a hotline 24/7 for those struggling with drug, alcohol, food and gambling addictions, and their family members. Recognizing that addiction affects the entire family, RAFTS has a few different types of family support group meetings at the annex. Federici said she encourages area residents to check the organization’s calendar on its website and also follow RAFTS on social media. Call 833-2B-SOBER for more information about RAFTS.

Parental Guidance

Apron Strings By Maureen Whelan

As parents, it’s hard to know just how much independence is the right amount. It’s so difficult to gauge because it is different for everyone. The constant swing of the pendulum is common with many parent- child relationships and either extreme is dangerous. We’ve all heard the news stories of a child getting hurt because there was no one there to guide the decision-making. The lesser-known stories often involve the child who fails to develop because he wasn’t provided the freedom and experiences he needed. In very young children, this is often done out of love and concern. As parents, we know when our kids are hungry and will provide food without them asking. We allow our babies to fall asleep on our shoulder, providing both parent and child the soothing comfort of human touch. Both of these behaviors are acceptable for infants at one time. Fast forward a couple of years and we now have toddlers that have language delays, because the parent has so intuitively anticipated every need for their child, there was no need to communicate. This child will also lack the self-soothing skills needed to calm before bed, thus creating difficulty with sleep regulation. If this cycle perseverates throughout the years, it will eventually wreak havoc for both parent and child. Eventually, there comes a time when it is best to let your kids experience a little discomfort. Being tired, hungry, bored, wanting or curious will drive the skill development to overcome those obstacles. Your child then becomes comfortable with this feeling of discomfort, because they are confident in their own ability to overcome it. They begin talking, moving, exploring and problem solving. They learn from their consequences and gain confidence from their successes. These skills will continue to develop..(at least hopefully!)…through adulthood. My own parents were very comfortable with our discomfort as kids. “God helps he, who helps himself”, was my father’s mantra. Sending 8 kids to Catholic school was no easy feat. They weren’t able to provide us with a lot of extra opportunities, but what they did provide, was even better. My parents gave us kids the tools to handle any situation or opportunity we came across. On our 14th birthday, we were all given a ride to town hall to get our working papers. By age 16, the only trips we took were down the shore to my uncle’s house on Chadwick Beach. But that year I would take my first plane flight, by myself, to Wisconsin… and later that summer to Japan, through programs sponsored by the Rotary Club. My boss at the ice cream shop nominated me and unbeknown to me at the time, paid for them both. I never even went to an airport before I boarded that plane to Wisconsin. Somehow, I just believed that I would be OK. I had the same feeling as I spent my early 20’s as a traveling therapist, driving myself to North Carolina, Ohio, Missouri and California. I was armed with my Rand McNally, my CB radio, and a fierce sense of “I’ll figure it out”. It has been said that a parent has done their job when their children no longer need them. I still hear my fathers voice guiding me in my decisions, and while I may not need my mother the way I once did, I’m happy to say I want her to stick around for a long as she can.

Healthy Morsels, II Facts You Need to Know About EPA Rollbacks by Lynn O’Hara

The bottom line is that it has just Lynn O’Hara, MS, RD, LPC gotten harder to eat healthfully Licensed Psychotherapist in the United States. Your best bet Registered Dietitian as a consumer is to buy organic (732) 899-9312 foods as often as possible. Another www.lynnoharalpc.com good alternative is to frequent farmers markets and get to know the farmers. Find out how they grow their foods and raise their animals. Ask your local produce store and butcher where they get their products. Request farm raised, cage free,

I’ve often written about the benefits of eating locally raised foods as well as organic foods. I believe that food raised with the least cost to the environment is better for everyone. By this I mean crops raised without use of herbicides and pesticides, animals raised on pastures and without cages or use of antibiotics, foods raised locally so as to not require vast amounts of efforts to land on our tables. All this basically means foods raised in our own environments as organically as possible. This has become even more important than ever under our current administration. Regardless of your political affiliation there are a few facts that you need to know about the current administrations EPA rollbacks. There have been many regulations rolled back but two of them are extremely important for people who eat. The first is on herbicides and the second, pesticides. I’ve written about the growing number of people who appear to have a gluten intolerance. It is no coincidence that people in the USA have problems eating bread but can eat bread in Europe. The difference? No Round-Up in Europe. It is a banned substance in Europe but is widely used here in the US. Crops have been genetically modified to tolerate this herbicide, which is liberally sprayed on almost every crop grown by big industry farms. Turns out we humans don’t tolerate that product in our diet very well. Guess what? Turns out that weeds have grown an immunity to this herbicide. As a result, more genetic engineering of crops is occurring to make them resistant to stronger and more harmful herbicides. One of those weed killers is called dicamba and is made by Monsanto, same maker as Round-Up. The other product, 2,4-D is a chemical compound in Agent Orange. The regulations and oversight on the formation and use of GMO’s has diminished with the pace of these products being formulated increasing. In addition, the EPA has delayed any new rules for the regulation of GMO’s.

organic meats. Request non-GMO fruits and vegetables and /or organic produce. If you are really feeling like an activist talk to your members of congress and let them know how you feel about being force fed chemicals you don’t want. It is hard to eat healthy but you are worth it. Until next time, eat healthy, be happy!

Pesticides are other chemicals used liberally on the crops we eat. The EPA has reneged on a proposed ban of chlorpyrifos, a pesticide that’s known to harm children’s brain development. This protects the profits of Dow chemical, maker of chlorpyrifos. Do you really want to eat foods sprayed by any of these chemicals? They are so harmful to our bodies. Auto-immune issues are on the rise. Why do you suppose? These chemicals are being found in our bodies on a cellular level. Wow. In addition to the rollback of regulations on herbicides and pesticides we consumers are also dealing with cuts to the USDA and FDA, entities tasked with keeping the foods we eat safe. Factory farming is another area of environmental, chemical and cruelty to animal issues that could take up a whole column.

Back to Earth Bring Nature Indoors by Natalie Berko

The ability to bring the outdoors into a home has been an ambition of homeowners for centuries. Natural elements have a tendency to lend a tranquil atmosphere to man made structures, which in turn can help those who spend time there feel more relaxed and happy. In recent years the growing awareness of the dwindling of the Earth’s resources have made it even more apparent that bringing nature into our homes is essential. Each natural element you bring into your home should be carefully chosen and placed. The act of gathering them can be a therapeutic and mindful experience in itself. Look for inspiration whenever you step outside take in the shapes and colours of nature.

Natural elements in addition to creating an inspiring and welcoming environment will never go out of style. Incorporating mother nature into your home can really transform how a space looks and feels. It also serves as a gentle reminder to get outside when you can, while making the days you’re stuck inside all the better. Here are five ideas that can help bring a little bit of nature into your home.

1. Plants

4. Water

Adorn your home with fresh flowers and potted plants. Succulents have become a popular choice, they are beautiful and easy to care for. Plants are not only a beautiful element to add to the home they also take in carbon dioxide and release oxygen cleansing the air you breathe. Additionally studies have shown that plants can reduce the amount of dust in the air by 20%.

Natalie Berko Certified Crystal Healer

The sound of running water has a tranquil calming effect on our minds. Consider a fish tank or an indoor fountain. Studies show that the sound of flowing water can also help us sleep better.

5. Sustainability

The practice of green living and conserving Earth’s natural resources has inspired homeowners to use building materials that may have been recycled. Locally sourced and reclaimed wood products are being repurposed to give them new functions.

2. Light

Avoid bulky window treatments and curtains that block the light. Put an emphasis on windows that look out onto a natural scene. Sunlight is not only free it is one of the easiest and most beautiful natural elements with the ability to make any room come alive. By harnessing the natural power of sunlight, you will reduce the growth of harmful bacteria and organisms that can take root in your home, and also regulate sleep hormones.

3. Wood

One of the few materials that can be left unstained and raw or be finished to look shiny like marble. Bringing wood into your home is one of the easiest and warmest of natural materials. Wood comes in a variety of finishes, species and applications, from flooring to ceiling beams. Wood can also be reclaimed and refinished from older buildings to keep its life sustainability ongoing for years in your home.
