Ayurveda is a 5,000 year old system if natural healing that has truly stood the test of time. It’s origins can be found in the Vedic culture of India, it’s actually considered by many to be the oldest healing science known to man. The word “Ayuveda” itself is a Sanskrit word that means “lifespan built on knowledge” or “science of life”.The basic structure of Ayurveda is built around the premises that there are three doshas. The three dosas are made up of different properties and are energies that exist in the body. The idea is that disease and illness originated from an imbalance within these three energies. The primary goal of Ayurvedic medicine is to create balance to help people live long healthy lives, without the need for prescription drugs, complex surgeries or suffering through painful ailments. Ayurvedic practitioners use a balanced healthy diet, lifestyle changes, stress relief and various herbal remedies to heal a myriad of conditions by bringing the body back into a balanced state. A balanced state is different for everyone, and everyones balance of doshas are unique to their constitute. In each of us we have some data, pitta, and kappa energy, but usually one or two of the doshas are more dominant in a particular person. These energies govern the body type, appetite, energy levels, moods, and overall tendencies. Unlike western medical treatment Ayurveda is not a one-size fits all prescription, it takes into account individuality when formulating a treatment plan.

Meet The 3 Doshas:

Vata - Vata energy is often compared to the wind, its in charge of mobility, range of motion, circulation, and breathing. Vata’s are known to be very creative and energetic, when out of balance they have anxiety, stress, and can appear absent minded. Physically, vata types are on the slender side, have a smaller bone structure, and tend not to put on weight easily. They have a delicate digestive system, dry sensitive skin, and may be cold frequently.

Pitta - Pitta is the energy force that governs most of the metabolic activity, including digestion, absorption of nutrients, regulating body temperature and energy expenditure. Pitta types tend to be very smart, hard-working and competitive when in balance, when out of balance they can be overly angry and aggressive. Physically they tend to have a medium build, be athletic and are versatile in terms of gaining weight or muscle.

Kapha - Kapha controls growth in the body and is nicknamed the nourishing dosha. It supplies moisture to the cells and organs helping keep a strong immune system. Kaphas are known to be grounded, supportive, loving, and forgiving while in balance. However a Kapha out of balance can also be lazy, insecure, envious, and sad.

By helping to balance these three energies or doshas, not letting on type become overly dominant and the others ignored we can achieve a more balanced constitution. In balance we can handle stress, maintain a healthy diet, deal with change and nourish our relationships. Two of the most important aspects if restoring this balance is tuning in to the natural rhythms of your body. Once you know your patterns and habits you can then bring your lifestyle into sync with nature and its cyclical patterns. You can do this by lining up your activity level, food choices, sleep and other activities throughout the day.
