Shore Recipes I love to experiment with fresh herbs in the summer when they are readily available outside my kitchen. This year I discovered Thai basil, which has a distinct flavor of citrus, licorice, and mint. You could substitute basil, lemon thyme, mint and fennel if you don’t have Thai basil. This was the perfect addition to this salad providing a balance between the sweet, and salty. It was delicious with shrimp, as well as on its own. Enjoy!

The Power of Positive Thinking Inner Strength

by Allison Feehan, N.D., D.Psc, CRMT

I might not look like much, but listen here, I can move a picnic bench, dresser, or couch when I need to. My body is strong. My spirit is stronger. I’m writing to tell you that strength doesn’t look like a 6 pack of abs, bulging thigh muscles, or a rippling back. Strength comes from within.

household, serving a home-cooked meal, putting your kids to bed, staying attractive for your significant other (or maybe just for you).

The outer coverings of your body — skin, hair, fat — are no match when it comes to your inner resolve. Forget about perfect. Forget about slapping on an Instagram filter to smooth out wrinkles, dimples, rolls. Although, I have! Instead, I want to remember the ways my body has served me well over my life. How it has grown bigger, stronger, more durable with every challenge like giving birth to two children. How it has shouldered the weight of daily stress, working, exercise. How it’s met those challenges and became better. Whether you think of mindset as a set of core beliefs and truths or a process for manifesting your deepest desires and dreams for your life, your mindset is the key that unlocks every possibility for your life, including its growth. So, if you’re finding yourself in a place of stagnation or antsy-ness to pick up the pace in your life, know that it’s likely a matter of mindset. It’s all in your head. For a long time, I’ve seen my clients judge themselves over and again for lack of success in their life. Maybe this sounds familiar. Is it because you’re comparing yourself to a wildly successful person who’s absolutely killing it in their business, marriage, or parenthood? Or maybe you’re comparing yourself to an unattainable standard that you believe you should achieve, but in reality, no human could ever reach it. You believe you can do it ALL: running a fantastic

You are doing that. “Don’t Bay Head, NJ throw your life away in comparisons. You’re the only you that will ever be.” In other words, you bring special gifts to the table. That’s what makes you “you”. And when you compare to other humans on this journey called life — instead of “connecting” — it strips away your power. Suddenly, you’re operating at less than 100%, which is a hateful place to be, let me tell ya. By comparing yourself to others, you’re setting yourself up to fail, to ignore that priceless combination that only “you” possess. And by not choosing to be you, you’re throwing away your talents when someone else might benefit from your insights, thoughts, action.

I don’t want you to exist in that place, even if it’s momentarily. I want you to push through and recognize your talents. That means connecting with others, which is what we’re wired to do. Why compare when you can connect? This month, I want to celebrate the curves, the wrinkles, the rolls, the dimples. Relish in your inner strength. Connect with those around you and share your gifts with the world.

The Book Report “Slade House” by David Mitchell A book review by Brian Favretto

I don’t read horror books often, but I was excited to give “Slade House” by David Mitchell a shot after it was recommended by a friend, and also because I was in the mood for a good change of pace. It was my first entry into the world of David Mitchell, who has earned a reputation for having a different kind of writing style and borrowing from his past books with each new creation.

that are perpetuating their own immortality. They work together to find an “engifted” victim every nine years in order to feed on their souls and keep their paranormal powers strong. They lure their victims by opening a portal to Slade Alley every ninth Halloween Eve, and create a realm catered to each victim. If they succeed in their mission, they are able to inhale the victim’s soul and be strengthened for another interval. I found in this novel that some of these chapters became repetitive, and with each successive chapter, I wondered where the plot was heading. I was pleased that in the end, the chapters were tied together and there was an acceptable conclusion that left me satisfied. What wasn’t satisfied, however, was my new appetite for nail-biting suspense. This book was not scary, period. Soul vampires are by no means warm and fuzzy, but this novel was more mystery than horror. Throughout the novel, not only was I waiting for the fear factor that never kicked in, I was trying to figure out why each victim had been chosen by the Grayers. They only desired a victim that possessed a set of qualities that stood out and made their souls more pleasing. I also wanted to know what they used to lure each victim into the portal, and I was relieved to learn the answer toward the end of the novel.

“Slade House” opens in 1979 in a suburb of London, where Nathan Bishop and his mother are having a difficult time finding Slade Alley. They traveled there hoping Nathan’s mom can finally get the big break she’s been waiting for in her musical career. After some trouble, they find the house, and as Nathan is left to do as he pleases with the children of the house, he becomes aware of things that shouldn’t exist in reality. The second chapter skips ahead to 1988 where a London detective has picked up a cold-case investigation into the disappearance of 13 year old Nathan Bishop. The initial investigation made no headway, and now, nine years later, Detective Gordon Edmonds is looking for the same Slade Alley. It is with the same difficulty that he finds the small iron door that leads to the alley. The oddities he observes are raising all kinds of red flags in his detective brain, but he becomes so smitten by the lady of Slade House that he turns his back on his intuition. It’s no spoiler to tell you things don’t turn out favorably for Detective Inspector Gordon Edmonds. The next chapters, five in all, each take place nine years after the preceding chapter. Each chapter is basically a short story itself, involving a different narrator whose fate will be determined within that chapter’s pages. The predators responsible for setting the Slade House events in motion are Norah and Jonah Grayer; twins

The book is short enough, at roughly 240 pages, to read quickly. At times it is witty, other times humorous, and once in awhile spooky. It made me think of a cross between “Alice in Wonderland” and “Invasion of the Body Snatchers”. So if you’re looking for a change of pace that doesn’t require a huge commitment, check out “Slade House” by David Mitchell, and see if your theory of the “engifted” victims is the same as mine. “Slade House”, Random House, 2016.

Rover Rescue What Kind of Dog is That? by Lauren Kehoe

It’s a question I get regularly, and working with shelter dogs, I rarely have an answer. Breeds are a hot and controversial topic among dog owners. There are plenty of people who will swear by a specific breed. Breeders proudly list the dogs’ pedigree and lineage on their papers, prepping them for the AKC. Places will ban so called dangerous breeds from dog parks, doggie daycares, or even entire cities. The question is how much do breeds matter? And just how accurate are these DNA tests popping up? Sometimes shelters try to guess a dog breed, only to have it get adopted, DNA tested, and come back completely opposite. One could swear a dog is a boxer, and the test come back as a Labrador mixed with Shar Pei. It’s extremely hard to tell by the human eye, which is essentially how all shelter dogs are labeled. Shelter staff doesn’t have the time or money to run DNA tests on dogs that come in. The labels they receive stick with them for better or worse.

On the flip side, knowing what type of breed a dog is could also be beneficial. It can clue the owner in to breed specific health issues, helping them know what to look out for. A little research or a vet consult can help answer what health issues are most common in a breed. Early intervention is potentially a big factor in disease prevention and treatment.

Lauren Kehoe is an avid animal lover and dog owner.

Most DNA tests are cheek swabs, and can be ordered online or done at a local vet. The accuracy is still debatable, but that doesn’t rule them out entirely. Some popular versions are Wisdom Panel, DDC Veterinary, and Canine Heritage Breed Test. The prices range from sixty to one hundred dollars and results return in two to four weeks. Purebred dogs are wonderful, and mixed breeds are just as great. If used for good, such as helping prevent future health problems, DNA labeling can be helpful. Continued education with dog breeds and behaviors will hopefully over time decrease discrimination. A breed can affect activity level or be more inclined to certain behaviors, but it doesn’t define a dog. After all, a favorite breed of dog can simply be “fluffy”!

In the shelter industry, because of breed discrimination, we often try and avoid that question and steer people away from asking about breeds. We would love to see a time where the sight of a Pitbull doesn’t make someone raise an eyebrow. We often repeat that it’s not the breed but the owner who is responsible for the dog’s upbringing. The dream would be to get away from breeds labeling for strays in shelters all together. If only kennels could read, “Brindle, loves to play fetch,” rather than guessing a breed which could ultimately sentence a dog to a more difficult road ahead.

Fashion Frenzy Just Say No

By Denise Brady Acanfora, Certified Personal Stylist and Owner, The Urban Exchange

Recently, I was interviewed for an article about being a small business owner and all that it entails. One of the questions was “What is the hardest part of your job?” I responded in a light-hearted manner and said “Not buying all the great stuff that the consignors drop off.” But, truth be told, saying No is the hardest part of my job. There is such a negative energy around saying No. When I tell consignors that we are full and are not accepting drop offs at the moment I brace myself for their response. Rarely does anyone just say “No worries – I will call or stop back another time.” And so begins the negotiations. How about taking just a few items? What should I do with all of this? I don’t feel like coming back. Should I just throw this away? It ends up taking on a heavy feeling when what I want is a light and happy vibe in the shop.

I want to say Yes. I want to say Yes to all of the pretty things! It would be easy, but it wouldn’t be right. The shop would feel clogged and tight. Literally and metaphorically. My vision is for a light, bright and happy shopping experience. So, monitor I will. Monitor what comes in and how often. So, pace I will. Pace how any items we accept at any given time. The good news is that there’s no need to limit these ideas to just business. Feel free to carry these ideas into your personal life. Monitor who and what you let into your life. Pace yourself so you don’t run yourself ragged. It’s okay to say No, if saying No leads you to happiness. Because, as Lori Deschene says, “You can be a good person with a kind heart and still say No.” Set your boundaries. Get clear with what you do and do not want. And say No when you mean No. I won’t be mad. I will totally understand. I’m over here trying to do the same thing!

Being in relationships with others, in life and in business, is always a work in progress. It’s important work. A big part of any successful relationship , personal or business, is honoring and respecting each other’s boundaries. As Seth Godin says “Just saying yes because you can’t bear the short-term pain of saying no is not going to help you do the work.” And I have a lot of work to do. It’s my job to curate the best items for the shop. It’s my job to merchandise the items in the most pleasing way that highlights their fabulous features. It’s my job to update our social media presence every day. Just like life, it’s a constant adjustment to balance saying Yes when it fits with my plans and saying No when it leads me away from my goals. And here’s the thing. The sooner we all learn this the better. When we say Yes but know we should have said No we end up being angry. Angry with ourselves for not honoring our truth. Angry with the other person for putting us in this situation and being disappointed. Nobody wins. Things go off track and detour to a place we never intended to go.

at a fraction of

Fabulous Fashion the Price!

This is a tricky balance to maneuver. As women, we have been raised to be people pleasers. It becomes our first job to make everyone around us happy – even if in doing so it ends up making us unhappy. So, we end up saying Yes when we want or need to say No. Establishing clear boundaries helps you make sense of each situation and leads you to your right answer. Establishing clear boundaries and goals for my business and my life makes sense. It makes sense for the shop and for the consignors. When I do well the consignors do well. The boundaries allow all of us to succeed. The boundaries are not meant to limit either of us. The boundaries are there to provide structure and guidelines that lead to success.

Parental Guidance ‘Tis the Season By Maureen Whelan

I love the change of seasons, its part of the reason I love the Jersey Shore. I don’t necessarily love each season the same way, but I welcome each change. I love the early spring days, when you can first smell the musky earth though the patches of melting snow. I love the summer, and the heat of the sand instantly warming your body. My favorite is the fall, when I can open the windows and fill my home with crisp cool air and fire up the oven for some apple crisp. I even love winter, and the quietness of freshly fallen snow blanketing gardens creating new canvases. As much as I love each season, I’m always happy to see it end and have a new one begin. Maybe I have a short attention span, or maybe it’s because each season brings the renewal of hope, growth, reward, and rest. But it dawned on me recently, with my hands full of dirt, that parenting has seasons too. I wish I had realized this sooner, as I spent many sleepless nights worrying about a current phase my child was in, or what he did not yet achieve. My experience taught me that no phase is forever, good or bad. The sleepless baby nights, and the baby belly giggles have long passed. Toddler tantrums and dandelion bouquets are gone as well. I am enjoying the season of one who still enjoys helping with dinner, but is learning to roll her eyes like her older siblings. I am living in the season of early teen moodiness, and boundless energy and optimism. I am present in my season of teen bravado and revel in the glimpses of the determination and purpose in my child’s life. And I am reaping great rewards of my oldest child’s kindness, perseverance and talent, while quietly mourning her independence of adulthood. The runny noses, and handprints are gone. The homemade cards and rainy afternoons reading while snuggled on the couch are gone too. I am in a season I have not experienced yet. I focus on the “yet”. I focus on the “yet” because I use this strategy when I’m working with my students who struggle to develop motor skills, interact with peers, or have difficulty understanding their own bodies or environment. They often voice their worries about failure…. “I can’t color in the lines.”; “I’m not good at this.” “I can’t catch a ball.”; “I don’t have any friends.” With each anxiety voiced I add the “yet”, because I know that with effort and perseverance, this season will pass. I have them practice saying the “yet” with me. They begin to understand the present is not forever, and they will need to work through this current season, to prepare for the next one.

July 2018

Maureen Whelan is a pediatric Occupational Therapist and mother of 4.

It’s a cycle that continues throughout our life, though at times the gears get stuck. We need to provide love, nourishment, attention, shelter and curiosity to our young children so they develop self-worth, a healthy mind and body, the ability to persevere, understand security, and a love of learning. We need to say “no”, assign chores, listen quietly, and freely forgive, so that our children learn proper boundaries, develop work ethic, communicate effectively, and develop empathy. We need to model balance in our lives, demonstrate self- care as well as self-sacrifice, practice our faith, and continue to learn. It’s our responsibility as parents to raise our children to know their self-worth while being compassionate. They need to understand that they are not always in control, but there is always good in the world. They need to know that when they feel helpless that there is always prayer, and always someone listening. They need to know that it’s OK if they don’t know what the want to be when they grow up, and there are a lot of adults that feel the same way.

Appreciate where you are in your journey, even if it’s not where you want to be. Every season serves a purpose. — Unknown

Much like the way a gardener clears an old harvest, tills the ground, weeds, plants, waters and waits until the next season when his garden is flush, we need to do the same as parents. The seasons will always change, and there are always memories to relish and trials to forget. Enjoy the present, and be present in the moment. Right now, there is something to be proud of, and something to be grateful for. Find some joy in the rain. Right now, there is something that can be done that will prepare for your future. Weed, till and support your young. Right now, your garden holds the promise of a bountiful future We just don’t know what the bounty is, yet. 17

So away from the lights and towards the water I go, all the while telling myself that scary creatures aren’t really lurking in the dark just waiting for the opportunity to strike. Even though I know that they are. I find a nice, dark spot and plop myself down, crisscross pretzel style. As my eyes are adjusting, millions of stars are starting to come into focus. And so is a person. A person coming at me. From out of the water. And I realize there is no way I am going to be able to get myself out of the sand fast enough to get away from this ginormous, blurry man coming my way. At a pretty rapid pace, I might add! He has stopped coming towards me now and seems to be just frozen in front of me.

And I’ve found that,

Did I scare him? Was he in front of me the whole time and it just looked like he was getting closer as my eyes adjusted? He isn’t moving and I know that at any second I am going to be able to see him as clear as if it was daylight. Why isn’t he moving? Is that his back? Or is he facing me? I can’t tell. I just know he is going to slash me into a million pieces as soon as he decides to. Wait..what is that? What..IS that? No. Stop it. Just stop it. That is not a man. I’m ridiculous. That is a trash can. Ginormous, short, wide, scary, blurry man...coming at me...wearing blue... is a trash can. I tell myself, AGAIN, that I am ridiculous. Because I have basically just wet myself, over garbage.

on my worst days, I feel much better not watching the sun sink along with my heart. Because I know just how long a sad night can be. Especially in the winter. But sunsets,

— Christina Callahan

just like any other gift, should be appreciated. Almost like a lesson you may not want, but definitely need. I’m trying Lord. I really am. — C.L. Bruno

Students of 08742 No Plastic Bags by Elizabeth Black

On April 24th, 2018 the Point Pleasant Beach City Council proposed an ordinance to abolish single-use plastic bags from the town. The push for this change follows the actions of two towns on Long Beach Island who have implemented a similar policy. Point Pleasant Beach mayor, council, and environmental commission have worked closely with the Chamber of Commerce and local businesses to ensure that it will not put

or chunks of plastic that they think are shrimp. Animals can suffocate on the plastic. If the plastic makes it to their stomachs, it can create a false sense of fullness. The animals stop eating and eventually die from starvation. Mayor Stephen Reid summed it up perfectly when he said, “Eliminating plastic bags will make Point Pleasant Beach a better town. With three lakes, the inlet and ocean, plastic bags in our waterways cause a hazard to the birds, marine life and pets making their homes here.

It is not an exaggeration to say that every person who has taken a walk on the beach has found some kind of plastic litter, whether it be bottles, bags, or bits of debris. Plastic is versatile and relatively inexpensive. The polymer structure of plastic makes it durable, but also sluggish to decompose. Depending on the type of bag and the conditions it is exposed to, it can take a plastic bag anywhere from ten to one thousand years to decompose. The United States Environmental Protection agency approximates that only five percent of the estimated one trillion plastic bags used worldwide are recycled.

There are some exceptions to the new ordinance. Plastic bags used for bait, produce, meats, frozen foods, deli goods, flowers, dry cleaner and door hanger bags, and pet store bags used to hold live fish. Plastic bags sold in packages such as garbage bin liners and pet waste bags will also be excused. Food-assistance programs will be permitted to use plastic bags to tote meals and other foodstuffs. Businesses do not have to discard their plastic bags immediately and are permitted to use the remaining stock of plastic bags they already have without violation. The town has purchased one thousand reusable canvas bags that will be accessible to residents. The mayor notes that this transition will be made without taxing any residents or businesses.

In addition to being an eyesore, plastic bags pose a lethal threat to innocent animals. In 2006, an international environmental organization called Greenpeace concluded that 267 animal species suffer from entanglement or ingestion of plastic. Plastic bags in particular can be mistaken for jellyfish or squid by animals like turtles that are just looking to eat. About fifty to eighty percent of sea turtles that are found dead ingested some type of plastic. Birds pick out pink, red, and brown bottle caps

There is no time like the present to make a switch that will benefit the Earth. Hopefully, other shore towns will follow suit and introduce new environmentally-friendly ordinances of their own.

Healthy Morsels, II Welcome Summer! by Lynn O’Hara

Now is the time to kick back and relax, a time to recharge our batteries that have run low over the long, gray winter. I hope many of you have planted gardens and will soon be able to enjoy fresh, homegrown vegetables. If a garden isn’t your thing, check out any of the farmers markets held throughout the shore area. For a complete list of area markets check out www.jerseyfresh.nj.gov. It is a great resource for finding local, fresh foods.

research has been done to determine Lynn O’Hara, MS, RD, LPC their potential health risks. Many would Licensed Psychotherapist like you to believe that GMO’s do not Registered Dietitian present any health risks but that alter(732) 899-9312 www.lynnoharalpc.com nate fact isn’t playing out too well. Let’s understand how we might come across a GMO in the grocery store. Monsanto is the maker of Round-Up, which is a weed killer. Scientists have genetically engineered certain vegetable plants to be able to survive a dousing with Round-Up. These plants take the Round-Up in but do not die. The vegetables are harvested and sent to stores. We purchase these vegetables and when we sit down to eat our nice dinner we are getting a dose of Round-Up. Round-Up is nearly non-toxic to humans but that doesn’t mean it isn’t dangerous. What happens to us on a micro nutrient level? For one thing, Round-Up kills bacteria in our guts. That may make it harder for us to digest and metabolize certain key nutrients. Perhaps we cannot tolerate the active ingredient in Round-Up, Glyphosate. Perhaps that gives us digestive issues. Maybe these digestive issues are diagnosed as gluten sensitivity. See where I’m going with this? In addition, wheat is harvested using Round-Up. That means eating bread gives us a good dose of Round-Up. Glyphosate is in many other vegetables and foods we eat, too, and is thought to create the inability to tolerate gluten. This would explain, in part, the rapid rise of gluten allergies and sensitivities.

Eating fresh, local food is becoming more and more important to people. Eating organic is becoming more important as well. There is growing concern that the food we eat on a daily basis is causing us harm. Between the processing that food goes through to the added sugar, people are finding it important to reduce the amount of processed food they eat in favor of whole foods. But what do we do if the whole foods we eat aren’t healthy for us? I am referring to non-organic and/or genetically modified (GMO) foods. We all know that pesticides are used copiously on fruit and vegetables leading many people to choose organic or locally grown foods. While locally grown foods are not necessarily organic, being able to talk to the farmer about his or her methods of farming let’s us choose wisely. Local farmers may grow as organic as possible but not be able to afford the stringent requirements needed for the organic label on their foods. Knowing how the farmers raise their crops is not something we get to ask at Costco. In bigger stores your best bet is to look for the organic label on fruits, vegetables and other foods. Another reason looking for the organic label or talking to the farmers is important is to avoid GMO’s. We do not know how much GMO food we are eating because it isn’t required to be labeled. Why is this a problem? Oh boy. You aren’t going to like this.

Bottom line is this: We do not know what the GMO’s in our diets are doing to us. I am not taking the word of the people who are doing the engineering. Call it lack of trust but money makes people do things that aren’t right. Remember the sugar scandal from all those years ago that I wrote about? Greed is a powerful motivator. I am buying organic as often as I can and I will certainly be going to farmers markets and talking to the people doing the selling to find out the farmers practices. Now is a great time to shift to healthier non-GMO and organic foods. Your body will thank you! Until next time, eat healthy, be happy!

Genetically modified organisms or GMO’s are organisms not found in nature. Scientists create them when they genetically modify or engineer food plants. This is a recently new development in the world of agriculture. In 1994 there were no genetically engineered foods planted. The Center for Food Safety estimates that today 70 to 75% of all grocery store products contain at east one genetically modified ingredient. Because of GMO’s quick rise within our food supply, little

Back to Earth Ayurvedic Medicinet by Natalie Berko

Pitta - Pitta is the energy force that governs most of the metabolic activity, including digestion, absorption of nutrients, regulating body temperature and energy expenditure. Pitta types tend to be very smart, hard-working and competitive when in balance, when out of balance they can be overly angry and aggressive. Physically they tend to have a medium build, be athletic and are versatile in terms of gaining weight or muscle.

Ayurveda is a 5,000 year old system if natural healing that has truly stood the test of time. It’s origins can be found in the Vedic culture of India, it’s actually considered by many to be the oldest healing science known to man. The word “Ayuveda” itself is a Sanskrit word that means “lifespan built on knowledge” or “science of life”.The basic structure of Ayurveda is built around the premises that there are three doshas. The three dosas are made up of different properties and are energies that exist in the body. The idea is that disease and illness originated from an imbalance within these three energies. The primary goal of Ayurvedic medicine is to create balance to help people live long healthy lives, without the need for prescription drugs, complex surgeries or suffering through painful ailments. Ayurvedic practitioners use a balanced healthy diet, lifestyle changes, stress relief and various herbal remedies to heal a myriad of conditions by bringing the body back into a balanced state. A balanced state is different for everyone, and everyones balance of doshas are unique to their constitute. In each of us we have some data, pitta, and kappa energy, but usually one or two of the doshas are more dominant in a particular person. These energies govern the body type, appetite, energy levels, moods, and overall tendencies. Unlike western medical treatment Ayurveda is not a one-size fits all prescription, it takes into account individuality when formulating a treatment plan.

Kapha - Kapha controls growth in the body and is nicknamed the nourishing dosha. It supplies moisture to the cells and organs helping keep a strong immune system. Kaphas are known to be grounded, supportive, loving, and forgiving while in balance. However a Kapha out of balance can also be lazy, insecure, envious, and sad. By helping to balance these three energies or doshas, not letting on type become overly dominant and the others ignored we can achieve a more balanced constitution. In balance we can handle stress, maintain a healthy diet, deal with change and nourish our relationships. Two of the most important aspects if restoring this balance is tuning in to the natural rhythms of your body. Once you know your patterns and habits you can then bring your lifestyle into sync with nature and its cyclical patterns. You can do this by lining up your activity level, food choices, sleep and other activities throughout the day.

Meet The 3 Doshas:

Vata - Vata energy is often compared to the wind, its in charge of mobility, range of motion, circulation, and breathing. Vata’s are known to be very creative and energetic, when out of balance they have anxiety, stress, and can appear absent minded. Physically, vata types are on the slender side, have a smaller bone structure, and tend not to put on weight easily. They have a delicate digestive system, dry sensitive skin, and may be cold frequently.
