Shore Decor Fall in Love with Your Home (Again)

Lastly, we’ve all seen mixed metals happening in jewelry over the past couple of years, and now this trend has extended into the home. It’s never been easier to freshen up your decor by creating unexpected mixed metal combinations like gold and silver, rose gold and matte black, and polished nickel and silver. One thing to note when experimenting with mixed metal lighting, bathroom or kitchen hardware or tabletop accessories, is that a little goes a long way with this trend.

Everyone has a relationship with their home. At its best, your home is a haven from stress, a reflection of your personal style and interests, and a source of pride and joy. But sometimes your home can start to feel stale and uninspiring, especially when life gets busy and you realize you haven’t paid attention to it in a while.

Luckily, 2017 has ushered in a host of exciting home design trends that can easily be incorporated into any budget or décor, so you can bring back that loving feeling just in time for Valentine’s Day. Neutral paint colors are still popular, although they are warmer and cozier now versus the greys and cooler tones that dominated 2016. Organic colors from the beach – soft blues, sand, sage grass green, and crisp whites – continue to work, especially in tandem with this years trend towards contrasting darker wood floors and finishes. We’re also seeing the rise of deep, jewel tones like teal, turquoise, deep blue, rich purple and emerald green being used as accents or to anchor a room, reflecting a sense of optimism for the future. These jewel tones still come from a natural palette, just one that’s bolder and more saturated.

Hardware Made Easy!

Beaver Dam Hardware is looking pretty good for a 43-year-old.

The Tranger family-owned store has been serving Point Pleasant and its surrounding areas since 1974, recently completing a considerable renovation at the end of 2016 to make the store easier to shop and create space to stock more items across their core departments: hardware, paint, plumbing, electrical, tools, housewares, automotive, lawn & garden and seasonal. 08742 Living went to talk to owner Christian Tranger to find out what drove the facelift and how he feels about following in his father’s footsteps.

Christian Tranger bought Beaver Dam hardware in 2012 from his father, Dave Tranger, a Vietnam War veteran who served in the US Navy. “I had been working at the store since I could reach the cash register. After I finished school and started to raise a family, I saw this as a good opportunity to continue to build on my dad’s success and create equity in something I cared about.”

“Don’t be complacent” and “always look for ways to satisfy your customers” are two pieces of advice that have informed Tranger’s business philosophy since taking ownership of Beaver Dam Hardware. Says Tranger, “We work hard to keep up with the needs of our customers and to make sure our inventory stays relevant.”

“For example, after the housing market crashed, we saw more and more homeowners taking initiative with home projects and maintenance.

As this trend grew, it became important for us to stock items that would appeal to both DIY’ers and professional contractors. In the last few years we’ve seen grill sales increase along with a rise in homeownership, so we’ve added several new brands including Weber, Traeger and Komato Joe to our mix. We also see more women starting to shop the store so we’ve added flowers, live plants and gift cards. We pride ourselves on our huge product selection. We have 20,000 items in-store and an additional 500,000 in our warehouse. If we don’t have it in store, we’ll get it for you…usually within a few days”.

Product selection isn’t the only thing that differentiates this local business. “I really want Beaver Dam Hardware to be more than a place to buy hardware. We look to go above and beyond with our customer service. We want customers to feel valued and to have an experience they can’t get at a big box retailer.”

A proud life long resident of Point Pleasant, Tranger bought the house he grew up in from his parents so he could be near to the store and raise his family in the town he grew up in. Says Tranger, “…as far as community goes, I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else.”

Students of 08742 The Winter Ahead

If you have made it through January and kept your resolutions, congratulations! One month down, eleven to go. Whether your resolution is a healthier lifestyle, to behave better financially, or to just try and be a better person overall, keep pushing through 2017. You can do anything if you just set your mind to it.

After an exciting holiday concert series, events on the Point Pleasant Borough High School calendar for February are minimal. February presents the third marking period, making the school year practically half over. Summer vacation likes to take its sweet time getting here. Luckily, from the seventeenth through the twentieth, students have off for President’s Day weekend.

Winter sports are standing out in panther news. The girls basketball team recently finished second in the WOBM Christmas Classic Tournament, and the ice hockey team won the Winding River Holiday Tournament. From hoops to pucks, the panthers are really killing it this season.

Auditions being wrapped up for the school’s spring musical, Sister Act, was mentioned in the January issue of 08742. Well, the cast list is finally out! The drama department will soon be hard at work with learning lines, songs, dances, and more. Sets will be built and costumes assembled.

The performing arts hallway will be bustling with people once more. Stay tuned for more information on the show.

If you are a student at the Point Boro High School and want something to keep you informed on school happenings, try the new and improved PPBHS app. The app is available for download on the App Store or on Google Play, meaning both Apple and Android users can use the app on their phones. It includes features like the bell schedule, two calendars, daily morning announcements, cafeteria menu, parent portal access, open lunch spots information, and more. Possibly the most enticing thing on the app is a notification service that allows students to check if there are any current emergencies. This will be useful for students at lunch to find out if there is a situation at school. The app was created by students and Mr. Nicholas Gattuso.

February fourteenth is Valentine’s Day. It is estimated by the United States Greeting Card Association that 190 million valentines are sent each year in the country alone. If you count valentine exchanges happening in schools, that number jumps to one billion. That’s a whole lot of love!

February being one of the iciest and coldest months, here are a few things to keep in mind this winter.

First, always take it slow when driving on roads that could be icy. It is much better to play it safe and spend the extra few minutes getting to your destination than run the risk of hurting you or someone else.

Secondly, February tends to be the peak for cold and flu season. Avoid the germs and wash your hands thoroughly.

Students of 08742 Students Change Hunger Food Drive

Memorial Middle School (MMS) recently participated in the 2016 Students Change Hunger Food Drive, which ran from Monday, September 19th to Monday, December 12th. This is the seventh year that MMS has taken part in this important, statewide food drive challenge sponsored by The New Jersey Federation of Food Banks. The New Jersey Federation of Food Banks includes The Food Bank of Monmouth & Ocean Counties, Community Food Bank of NJ, Mercer Street Friends Food Bank, and Food Bank of South Jersey. MMS works with The Food Bank of Monmouth & Ocean Counties. Participating schools compete to collect non-perishable food items to donate to the food bank location nearest to them with a goal of achieving the most weight.

MMS encouraged students, families, and staff members to donate items such as, pasta, peanut butter, jelly, cereal, soups, canned fruits & vegetables, and snacks to help people and families throughout NJ who are in need of these grocery items, especially during the holiday season and winter months. Some types of food items were not permitted for donation such as anything in a glass bottle or jar, bottled water, perishable, frozen or refrigerated items.

• The MMS Positive Behavior Support In School (PBSIS) committee sponsored a “5 Pound Panther” Raffle in which individual students donating 5lbs where entered into a special raffle for a chance to attend the Students Change Hunger award ceremony in January 2017.

While helping others, participating schools also take part in friendly competition to potentially win awards for collecting the largest amount of food, by weight, and for the Governor’s Cup award. The Governor’s Cup is an award endorsed by Governor Chris Christie and given to recognize a school displaying excellent school spirit, participation and championing of Students Change Hunger challenge.

• The MMS Student Council awarded the homeroom collecting the most food, by weight, with a pizza party.

In addition to the awards and recognition possible to win through The NJ Federation of Food Banks, MMS, with assistance from various school groups, created its own competition to help drive increased participation. First, MMS set a school wide goal to collect 3,000 total pounds of food during the 2016 program challenge. Next individual, students, homerooms and grade levels were challenged by the offering of fun award incentives.

• The MMSPTO awarded the grade collecting the most donations, by weight, with a grade level movie and snack assembly.

At the end of each week, throughout the Students Change Hunger challenge, the MMS 6th Grade Character Education Class collected the donations from each homeroom, weighed, recorded & kept track of the totals. In total, MMS collected and donated 2,906 pounds of food to The Food Banks of Monmouth & Ocean Counties. Although the final total was shy of the 2016 school wide goal, MMS did set a new school record by collecting more pounds of food than any other previous year! Great work MMS! Go Panthers!

Parental Guidance Safety

I was recently sent some links to a talk by Simon Sinek, an author, speaker and “optimist”, who advises on military innovation and planning. He currently has a video talk about “Millennials in the Workplace” that was flooding social media sites. The discussion was thought provoking as it it highlighted many issues that are a reality with the younger generation today. He piqued my interest and I wanted to see more. It was as I watched his talk about leadership success that I found my inspiration for this month’s column. Simon Sinek talks about what makes a leader a great leader, and he equates it to traits of a great parent. Simply put, a great leader instills a feeling of safety in their tribe. The tribe will then push themselves to their greatest capacity, because they feel as though their leader will do the same. This action generates a safe secure bond with both the leader and the tribe. He talks about many military leaders that embody this belief… the leader is willing to sacrifice for the benefit of the tribe.

It is not just an admirable trait, but a necessary one for success. As profound as Simon Sinek is, his ideas are not novel. In fact, they are remarkable similar to a renowned psychologist, Abraham Maslow, who developed a theory of hierarchical needs as a guide to psychological health. This theory is a belief I hold true, as feelings of safety and security are primitive needs to be full filled, with only the physical needs of food, warmth, water, and rest being greater.

If we were asked to build a house, it is common knowledge that to do so successfully, first one must build a solid foundation. As parents though, we often rush to the finishing touches never realizing the importance of our critical misstep, until our children begin to crumble under the weight of the world.

Our parental foundations are first the basic needs of food, water, warmth, and rest. The next layer is instilling feelings of safety and security. We must do this by showing our children that we ask of them only that which we are willing to sacrifice ourselves. Yet there are times, we place them on sports teams rationalizing it is a healthy activity as we hit the drive through for a latte. We drop them at Sunday school hoping they learn about a faith we barely recognize. We limit their screen time with auto-time controls so that we don’t have to look up from our cell phones to tell them to stop. We punish struggles and reward false titles so that we can tell ourselves we are in control. Yet none of these behaviors will cultivate a secure and trusting bond with our children. The young eyes see with clarity what parents are blind to, that our actions speak louder than words. But, when a parent is able to put down their phone, go for a bike ride, or attend Sunday mass, with their child it creates a sense of safety. This feeling builds trust that they are not alone, that they will be protected, and that their security is a priority. Only once these needs are met can parents begin to fulfill the higher level needs of giving and receiving love, friendship and belonging to tribe(family, friends, organizations). With security, our children will seek out their own interests in fitness or peer groups, develop a faith in what is familiar, and find value in human interaction over a screen.

Abraham Maslow also provides hope for parents, as this pyramid of hierarchical needs has no time line. It is a dynamic model and we move throughout our lives, and up and down between levels. We can not always prevent blows to our children’s feelings of security, or our own. But we can help promote healthy emotional development by being aware of what level our children are, and providing them Selfwith what they need at that time.

Coconut water is rich in electrolytes, and the kernel (or meat) of the coconut is high in lauric acid, which improves your HDL (good cholesterol) levels. The meat is also nutrient rich providing copper, calcium, iron, manganese, magnesium, and zinc. This Coconut Chicken has an exotic flavor and the perfect combination of sweet and savory.

Coconut Fried Chicken In a large bowl combine:

2 lbs boneless chicken trimmed and cut into pieces I can of unsweetened coconut milk 1 orange, zested and sliced thin 3 cloves of garlic, minced 2-3 TBSP red hot sauce (or more if you prefer more heat) 1 TBSP dried cilantro 2 tsp. Chili powder 2 tsp. Onion powder 2 tsp. Smoked paprika 1 tsp. Ground ginger ½ tsp. Black pepper 1 tsp. sea salt 3 green onions chopped thin

Mix together in a large bowl mashing the orange slices to help release some of the juice. Place chicken pieces in mixture and turn to coat all pieces. Wrap the bowl and place in refrigerator at least 8 hours or overnight.

Mix equal parts coconut flakes and seasoned breadcrumbs for coating.

Remove chicken from marinade and place in coating. Heat large skillet, and place ½” vegetable oil in pan. Place chicken pieces in heated oil and cook 3-4 minutes each side.until dark golden brown. Drain excess oil on paper and place on rack in warm oven until all chicken is cooked. Serve with sweet and sour sauce if desired.

(Desiccated coconut can be substituted for coconut flake if desired. This can be found in the produce section or organic food section of your grocery store.)

You Go Girl Keep it Moving!

I’m sure we’re all feeling it. The sluggishness, the still-tight jeans after the holidays, that overwhelming desire to just call out of work and snuggle under the covers all day… it’s really the season of staying in and lazing around.

But, like we talked about when it first started getting colder, it’s so important to keep moving. We want those endorphins pumping, so we can keep feeling like the fabulous ladies that we are! We definitely don’t want to let those winter blues creep in and make us feel bad about ourselves.

Of course, the fastest way to make this happen is to get to the gym.

But it’s not always easy to make the time to get there, especially for those of us who work and have to take care of a family and somehow maintain our sanity at the same time. So I’m here with a few suggestions on how to keep active and stay in shape through the cold winter weather!

1. Take the stairs. This is probably the most simple, straight forward change you can make. Instead of moving to an elevator or escalator, always choose the stairs.

2. Ice skating. Normally when we see our friends, we make dinner dates, but this is a great alternative. You could also bring the family with you rather than girlfriends, or have a date night with your special someone. Just put on some warm clothes and head to your local ice rink. Most of them have several open skating times on the weekends so you can find a time that fits into your schedule.

3. Head to the mall. Another way to have fun and keep moving at the same time is to actually, physically go out shopping.

I know it’s tempting to do it all from the warmth and comfort of your computer, but walking around the mall will let you get in some exercise while protected from the cold. Plus, it’s a great chance to look for that perfect pair of boots!

4. Dance it up. Like ice skating, you can use this as an alternative to going out for food. Head to a local bar on Friday or Saturday night with your girlfriends or your significant other.

And if you don’t want to go out or can’t find a sitter, you can just dance around the house! Put on music and get silly while you’re cooking or cleaning. Pull your family in with you and laugh together!

5. Use your kids! (If you have them – if not, you can use the dog!) It’s snowy and gross outside? Well, you may not want to go out in it, but I bet the kids would love to go sledding, have a snowball fight, or build a snowman.

The bottom line is, staying active doesn’t have to involve a timeconsuming trip to the gym that feels like monotonous torture.

Stop making excuses; you can bond with friends and family and have a good time, even when it’s cold outside!

The Book Report “Home” by Harlan Coben A book review by Brian Favretto

“The boy who has been missing for ten years steps into the light”.

What a great way to open a novel. Instantly I was excited for the rest of the story. “Home”, by Harlan Coben, is the 11th and most recent book in the Myron Bolitar series. He hasn’t been the focus of a book since “Live Wire” in 2011.

Myron Bolitar is the owner of a sports agency firm, though his career doesn’t really come into play in this plot. I enjoy reading the Bolitar books because unlike the main characters of some series, Myron doesn’t seem to have super-human capabilities, and he isn’t always finding himself in death-defying situations. He a is a realistic character that many of us can relate to. He has overcome adversity and experienced pain in his life and became a better person for it. He has also built strong and loving relationships, yet is apprehensive about his future. In this book, he is called upon by his best friend Windsor Horne Lockwood III (thankfully nicknamed Win) to become a second string detective and help solve a decade-old mystery.

isn’t talking. Back home in the States, the homecoming isn’t what you’d expect. Win and Myron are forced to start from the beginning, going back ten years, to see if they can piece something together that will help lead them to Rhys Baldwin. Slowly but surely, they realize that things are not adding up. Finding Patrick Moore should have concluded the mystery. Instead, it has opened a box that had been sealed with a tangled web of lies and deceit.

I really enjoyed this book because Coben’s writing is simple, and his progressive story is mostly easy to follow. When things get a little complicated, he smartly uses a character to provide the reader a clarification summary. The beginning was amazing, the ending was brilliant, though the middle may have dragged just slightly. What I liked most were several themes that Coben incorporated into this story. He touched on the realization that love sometimes brings emotional pain, and the truth that God’s plan supersedes our own, no matter how hard we try. He showed the danger of investigating without facts, which would lead us to “twist facts to suit theories, instead of theories to suit the facts”. Most importantly, Coben highlighted the snowball effect of lying; how we end up creating more lies, and getting more people involved just to cover our tracks. As painful as it might be, honesty from the beginning brings peace, and will never eat you from the inside out.

At age 6, Patrick Moore and Rhys Baldwin are abducted from the kitchen of Patrick’s home.

There was a weak attempt at a ransom demand, then nothing else. Nothing for ten whole years, until out of the blue, Win receives an anonymous email stating that Patrick has been spotted in London. As the cousin of Rhys Baldwin’s mother, Win has no choice but to take the tip seriously. When the tip proves accurate, the scene in London quickly deteriorates, and Win needs help. Always willing, Myron heads to London and saves the day by rescuing Patrick. The problem is, there is no sign of Rhys, and Patrick

Beer Corner Cans to Bottles to Cans, Again!

was made from aluminum and lined with thin plastic. Secondly, Dale’s was not a watered-down, light American lager. It was hoppy and rich.

A revolution had begun.

This month marks the 82nd anniversary of the first time a canned beer was sold in the United States. On January 24, 1935, the Gottfried Krueger Brewery, in cooperation with the American Can Company, distributed 2000 cans of their beer to consumers in Richmond, Virginia.

The response was overwhelming. Within months larger breweries like Anheuser-Busch were seeing a significant enough impact on their bottom line that they, too, began to can their beer. By year’s end over 200 million cans had been sold in American markets.

Today, canned beer accounts for roughly 55% of all beer production.

It’s most notable growth, though, is in the craft beer industry where cans increased from only 2% of total craft volume in 2011 to 10% in 2014.

That growth – representing nearly 2 million barrels – accounts for about 1 percent of the total U.S. beer market.

The popularity of canned beer grew throughout the 1930s before exploding during World War II, when U.S. brewers shipped millions of cans of beer to soldiers overseas. After the war, the large national breweries took full control of the beer market by combining Americans’ affinity for beers’ new packaging with the distribution advantages canned beer possessed. By 1969, canned beer was outselling bottled beer for the first time in history and, by 1983, the top six breweries in the United States – Anheuser-Busch, Miller, Heileman, Stroh, Coors and Pabst – controlled 92% of U.S. beer production.

The trend towards canned beer seemingly benefits both producers and consumers. For the breweries, cans are cheaper to manufacture and cheaper to ship. “I can’t reveal the specifics of the cost-saving this represents to us, but it is a factor,” says Emma Giles, Guinness brand director. Furthermore, cans are more environmentally friendly than bottles.

Canned beer weighs less than bottled beer, making shipping more efficient while reducing the carbon footprint at the same time. Not to mention that, on the back end, recycling rates for aluminum are 100% higher than glass.

Finally, but not insignificantly, cans provide a greater surface area for graphic design and marketing.

It was the following year, though, that Jim Koch established his Boston Beer Company. Koch realized a market trend of customers seeking higher-priced imports.

To compete alongside the likes of Heineken, Corona and Bass, Koch brewed Samuel Adams Boston Lager, which was released to two dozen bars and restaurants in April of 1985. Boston Lager, along with the aforementioned imports, marketed itself as the anti-Budweiser. In the mind of Koch, “cans” represented the watered-down light lager being produced by the heavyweight macrobreweries. His beer, on the other hand, was dark, malty and refined – qualities complemented by the bottle in which they were served. Throughout the ‘80s and ‘90s, US beer drinkers operated on the assumption that high-end beers come in bottles, while budget beers are packaged in flimsy, 12-oz. cans.

American consumption of beer in metal cans began to wane by the late ‘90s and by 2002 American breweries were packaging nearly as many bottles as they cans.

For consumers, the benefits of canned beer are derived largely from improved product quality. According to Christian Ettinger, founder of Portland, Ore.-based Hopworks Urban Brewery: “The three enemies of beer are sunlight, oxygen and heat, so let’s take the heat out of the equation, because you can control that in either package. Aluminum is impervious to sunlight and is subject to lower oxygen levels when put in a can instead of a bottle, so two of the three enemies are kind of mitigated to a greater degree in aluminum than they are when beer is packaged in glass.”

And while that is true, the mounting consumer preference for canned beer likely has more to do with convenience. Cans are portable, stackable, unbreakable, and easily cooled, making them exponentially more useful to an average consumer of good beer.

It was in 2002, though, that Colorado upstart Oskar Blues began canning Dale’s Pale Ale and the market took note. First off, canning technology had evolved. The metallic taste that often accompanied tin beer cans that were lined with lead had disappeared, as the modern can

Rover Rescue Why Dogs Pant...

Picture this. It’s a warm summer day without a cloud in the sky. You are hanging out in your backyard, the warm sun beating down of the grass. You hurl the tennis ball across the way, wiping beads of sweat off of your forehead. Your dog charges after the green sphere, dropping it at your bare feet. He sits down and cocks his head, tongue hanging out of his mouth.

Heavy breathing accompanies his dripping tongue.

Too excited to pause for water, his furry body shoots off again in pursuit of the ball.

This dog is part of our shelter outreach program where we take dogs from overcrowded shelters in hopes of finding them a forever home here!

We generally do not have much background info on them and cannot guarantee they are housebroken. They are all up to date on vaccines, spayed/neutered and microchipped.

Why do dogs pant? Dogs’ bodies are set up differently than humans. They have some advantages we don’t, such as having a better body structure for running and jumping. We have advantages they don’t, like a larger brain capacity for complex thinking. Some are just plain different. This is the case for panting versus sweating. When humans sweat, it is our body’s method of cooling down. Without it, we would overheat. With four million sweat glands across the human body, this proves to be an effective design. It helps us maintain homeostasis, and a healthy body temperature of 98.6 degrees Fahrenheit.

Without sweating, it would be easy to overheat and experience heat stroke.

This young guy has lots of energy and is so sweet and fun!!

He must have some working dog breed in there...either Aussie or Border Collie. He gets along well with other dogs and likes to play, play, play! He is about 1 1/2 years old and about 40 lbs.

Just like any new dog, he would benefit from obedience training.

Dogs’ bodies are not equipped with many sweat glands. Since they are covered in fur, the sweat would get stuck in their fur and fail to evaporate and cool them down. They have a few on their feet, which is why they sometimes leave wet paw prints on a hot day. Their feet sweat glands are not large enough to control their entire body temperature. Instead, they pant.

Panting allows dogs to move air throughout their body that is necessary to cool themselves down. The moisture on a dog’s tongue evaporates, and heavy breathing sends the moisture to the lungs. This can cool the body temperature significantly.

Prolonged heavy panting could be a sign of heat stroke, heart problems, or anxiety. If it continues after exposure to drinking or swimming water, or long after your dog stops exercising, excessive panting is something to keep an eye on. Spending time around your dog can help you differentiate the difference between normal body language and behavior or something out of the ordinary to keep an eye on. Panting in hot weather or directly after exercise is nothing to raise concern. Usually it is a perfectly normal bodily function. Without it, your dog just wouldn’t be a dog!

Ginny & Willow’s Story

Picked up as strays in rural NC, Ginny and her sister Willow are 9 month old Hound mixes looking for a home to call their own.

These two are about 25 lbs but are so skinny; Ginny they could stand to put on some weight.

Both are very frightened here in their new surroundings and would be better suited in a calmer home with patience to help bring them out of their shell. Not sure if they may have been abused or just under socialized.

Obedience classes to teach them some Willow manners and bond with their new owners would also be helpful. Please give these girls a chance to know what it’s like to have a real family where they won’t end up on the streets again.

Abby’s Story

This big, beautiful girl was adopted from us as a kitten 8 years ago. She was recently returned by her owner’s because they sold their home and is having a new home built down in Florida. Apparently they will be staying with 3 different families during the year long construction of their new home and are unable to ‘lug’ Abby around with them.

Now at 8 years old Abby is in search of a new home where they will love her for the rest of her days and she won’t be cast aside again. Weighing in at 20 lbs, this girl needs a diet and some exercise! Do you have room in your heart and home for this sweet girl? Her heart is broken being left behind and she’s waiting for you to lift her spirits.
