ASSIGNMENT 1 ASSIGNMENT 1

LEGISLATIVE AND REGULATIVE LEGISLATIVE AND REGULATIVE DIMENSIONOF DIMENSIONOF INTERIORDESIGN INTERIORDESIGN

As aspiring Graduate Interior Designers, it is essential for students to develop a strong understanding of the contractual, professional, and legislative terms relevant to interior design practice. This assignment aims to equip students with the knowledge required to navigate and apply these terms in real-world scenarios. Each group will focus on a specific key topic, conducting a detailed study to understand how it relates to professional practice. Students will analyze and synthesize the Uniform Building By-Laws 1984 (UBBL) along with other relevant regulations, specifically focusing on provisions for interior spaces and, where applicable, exterior spaces. This exercise is designed to prepare students for the complexities of compliance and regulation in the industry.

CONCLUSION CONCLUSION

The contractual, professional, and legislative terms relevant to the practice of interior design are better understood through this assignment. For the project, my group was assigned to present active fire safety. It was necessary to analyze the Uniform Building By-Laws 1984 and the related regulations. We shared thoughts on how active fire safety-fire alarm, sprinkler, smoke detectors, fire extinguishers-are fitted to ensure interior spaces meet the required standards of safety.

This present study enhanced not only my ability to interpret and synthesize complex regulatory documents but also provided deep insight into the application of such provisions in realistic design scenarios. I learned about the important role active fire safety plays in protecting occupants and ensuring the functionality of space in case of emergencies. This experience has, however, really driven home how fire safety needs to be considered as an early design consideration to meet the relevant industry standards and avoid costly adjustments later on.

The focus on active fire safety has much better equipped me to face compliance issues arising in other projects and to inform designs which consider safety and usability.

ASSIGNMENT 2 ASSIGNMENT 2

KNOWLEDGE EXCHANGE FORUM + KNOWLEDGE EXCHANGE FORUM + PDWSUMMARY PDWSUMMARY

This assignment, titled "Knowledge Exchange Forum + PDW," comprises three tasks worth a total of 35% toward the final grade. Its objective is to promote democratic exchanges and encourage active participation in online forums, facilitating personal and academic growth through peer communication. Students are required to form groups based on project themes and propose suitable abstracts closely related to their group theme. Additionally, students must participate in the forum each week, as participation carries marks. They are also expected to write a concise summary/reflection of their thoughts on each forum (200 words maximum) and attend at least six seminars during Professional Development Week (PDW). Following PDW, students must submit a summary/reflection of their thoughts on each seminar (500 words maximum per seminar), along with text and image content, in PDF format.

This assignment aims to foster professional interchange and idea- sharing among students, providing opportunities for personal and academic growth.

CONCLUSION CONCLUSION

This assignment has really provided me with a clear insight into foundational aspects in the establishment and structuring of a design practice. Through the application of knowledge from Project 1, referring to appropriate Acts, Rules, and By-Laws, I have managed to better my understanding of what is legally and professionally demanded in setting up a design business.

The process taught me how to plan, organize, and conceptualize a vision for a future design practice-be it a Sole Proprietorship, Partnership, or Body Corporate. It developed my strategic thinking of operational and regulatory issues pertaining to the industry while nurturing creativity and innovation in the molding of a practice that would meet professional standards.

The exercise therefore prepared me with key skills and an improved perspective on the pragmatic realities associated with maintaining a design practice, ready for both the challenges and opportunities presented by the professional world.

Students are expected to integrate the knowledge acquired from Project 1 and the discussions in Project 2 into their individual thesis projects developed in AIDP1. Each regulatory, legislative, and technical provision must be effectively translated into an engaging and informative graphical presentation. This should include accurate dimensions, detailed drawings, isometric views, and material specifications where applicable. Assessments will focus on the students’ ability to clearly articulate and practically apply their understanding to their Final AIDP1 Project, demonstrating both technical proficiency and conceptual depth.

THREADING FADED CULTURE

"Threading of Culture Faded with Time" is a project dedicated to preserving and revitalizing fading heritage and timeless traditions. By integrating traditional Chinese design elements—such as symbolic motifs and architectural styles—into modern spaces, it bridges the past and present. Through educational programs, exhibitions, and modern reinterpretations, the initiative ensures cultural legacies remain cherished and relevant in today’s evolving world.

CONCLUSION CONCLUSION

In my final assignment, I had the opportunity to put most of the knowledge acquired from Phase 1 into practice, specifically the laws and regulations required for building design. This really deepened my understanding of the basic importance of safety and regulated design in ensuring that the structure is not only functional but also compliant.

Combining insights from Project 1 and the discussions from Project 2, I was able to translate these principles into a comprehensive and engaging graphical presentation for my Final AIDP1 Project, which included accurate dimensions, detailed drawings, isometric views, and material specifications that really showed the practical application of technical knowledge in my design.

This project has helped me understand how to connect the deep ideas with the technical skills. This ensures that every rule, law, and technical detail is not only covered but also well explained in the design. This has been an important learning experience for me in linking theory with real-world use in a meaningful way.

CLOSING CONCLUSION CLOSING CONCLUSION

Through learning Professional Practice, I acquired in-depth knowledge of the contractual, professional, and legislative frameworks vital to interior design. For instance, the emphasis on active fire safety required detailed review of the Uniform Building By-Laws 1984 and has further deepened my understanding of the systems of fire alarms, sprinklers, smoke detectors, and other safety systems. This drove home the point that integrating safety considerations early into the design process is key to ensuring compliance without having to make costly changes at a later stage.

The Professional Development Week and forums helped me understand the current problems and trends in the industry. They showed me how important it is to be adaptable, network, and keep learning. Talking with industry leaders and peers made me realize how useful professional platforms like LinkedIn are for making connections and showing my skills.

Applying knowledge from Project 1 further developed the capacity to meet regulatory and operational demands while conceiving how to initiate and run a design practice. This was fostering strategic thinking, technical skills, and creativity—balancing compliance with innovative design.

All in all, learning about Professional Practice was a very important experience that gave me the skills and confidence necessary to deal with the challenges of the interior design profession and make a positive contribution to it.
