How can transport help make societies more inclusive? The theme of ITF’s 2022 Summit may seem presumptuous. We live in times when fewer and fewer things seem to unite us and more and more things appear to divide. What can trucks and trams and ships and bicycles contribute to overcoming discord? A lot, as the Summit debates showed. Transport is one of the most powerful forces we possess to unite and unify. Good transport, like good education, is a great creator of human opportunity. Transport serves people to lead self-determined lives. It serves us to come together.

The war in Ukraine cast a shadow over our reunion. While we mapped out a better transport future, rockets destroyed bridges and ports, built to bring people together.

A LOOK BACK

The 2022 Summit explored ways forward across all facets of this challenge. ITF launched its online Gender Analysis Toolkit for Transport to help assess and improve gender awareness in our sector. We introduced the Urban Access tool, which compares accessibility in 121 cities. And with FIA, we presented the Disabled Motoring website with information for disabled people who rely on car travel.

AT THE 2022 SUMMIT Significantly, 2022 marked the return to an in-person Summit. The attendance figures show how much you all value meeting face to face. Fifty national delegations came to Leipzig, 37 of them led by ministers. Six were from invited non-member countries, twice as many as in 2019. Despite slightly fewer registrants, more attendees were on-site each day than during the 2019 event. And Leipzig 2022 wrote ITF history: It was the first-ever Summit under the presidency of an African nation, Morocco. We also celebrated the accession of Cambodia as ITF’s 64th member country. Two strong signals of how ITF is becoming more global! Ministers also elected me to a second five-year term as the ITF SecretaryGeneral. I am deeply honoured by their trust and will continue to serve ITF Member countries with pride and passion. A central part of the Summit’s secret is the ITF’s partners, who, through their presence and participation, inspire so many conversations and ideas. Twelve guest and observer organisations showcased their work - among them non-transport bodies such as the World Health Organization, the World Bank, the International Labour Organisation and the UN Climate Secretariat UNFCCC. Our friends from ECTRI, TRB and WCTRS effectively set the scene with the PreSummit Research Day.

The private sector’s participation is a major asset to the policy dialogue.

The members of the ITF Corporate Partnership Board provided cuttingedge input from their projects, and the company side events, exhibition stands or demonstrations were, as always, effective conversation starters.

Nous vivons à une époque où de moins en moins de choses semblent nous unir et de plus en plus semblent nous diviser. Que peuvent apporter les camions, les tramways, les bateaux et les vélos pour surmonter la discorde ?

Beaucoup, comme l’ont montré les débats du Sommet. Le transport est l’une des forces les plus puissantes que nous possédions pour rassembler. Un bon système de transport, comme une bonne éducation, est un grand créateur d’opportunités humaines. Les transports nous permettent de mener des vies autonomes et servent même à nous unir.

DE RÜCKBLICK AUF DEN GIPFEL 2022

Le Sommet 2022 a exploré les moyens de progresser dans toutes les facettes de ce défi. Le FIT a lancé sa boîte à outils d’analyse de genre en ligne pour les transports afin d’aider à évaluer et à améliorer la sensibilisation au genre dans notre secteur. De manière significative, 2022 a marqué le retour à un sommet en personne. Le nombre de participants montre à quel point vous appréciez tous de vous rencontrer en personne. Cinquante délégations nationales sont venues à Leipzig, dont 37 dirigées par des ministres. Six d’entre elles provenaient de pays invités non membres, soit deux fois plus qu’en 2019. Malgré un nombre légèrement inférieur d’inscrits, plus de participants étaient sur place chaque jour que lors de l’événement de 2019. Leipzig 2022 a marqué l’histoire du FIT : C’était le tout premier Sommet sous la présidence d’une nation africaine, le Maroc. Nous avons également célébré l’adhésion du Cambodge, qui est devenu le 64e pays membre. Deux signes forts de la mondialisation du FIT ! Les ministres m’ont également élu pour un second mandat de cinq ans au poste de Secrétaire général du FIT. Je suis profondément honoré de leur confiance et je continuerai à servir les pays membres de cette organisation avec fierté et passion. Un élément central du secret du Sommet est constitué par les partenaires du FIT qui, par leur présence et leur participation, inspirent tant de conversations et d’idées. Douze organisations invitées et observatrices ont présenté leur travail, parmi lesquelles des organismes non liés au transport tels que l’Organisation mondiale de la santé, la Banque mondiale, l’Organisation internationale du travail et le Secrétariat des Nations unies pour le climat (CCNUCC). Nos amis de l’ECTRI, du TRB et du WCTRS ont efficacement planté le décor avec la journée de recherche pré-sommet. La participation du secteur privé est un atout majeur pour le dialogue politique. Les membres du conseil de partenariat d’entreprise du FIT ont fourni des informations de pointe sur leurs projets, et les événements parallèles organisés par les entreprises, les stands d’exposition ou les démonstrations ont, comme toujours, permis d’engager la Leconversation.sommet2022 n’aurait pas été un tel succès sans nos sponsors du Sommet, qui rendent tant de choses possibles : notre partenaire régional Saxe, le sponsor platine Kapsch TrafficCom, le sponsor or Autocrypt, le sponsor argent Waymo et les partenaires de mobilité Tier avec Nextbike. Plusieurs sessions ont permis d’explorer les moyens de soutenir l’Ukraine et sa reconstruction, ainsi que d’atténuer l’impact de la guerre sur les chaînes d’approvisionnement. Je souhaite sincèrement que le sommet de 2023 se déroule dans un climat de paix retrouvée et je vous invite à parcourir cette brochure, qui témoigne des joies de se réunir dans le respect mutuel et dans le but commun d’améliorer la condition humaine grâce à de meilleures politiques de transport.
