Deepings Bargain Hunt

Janetha is of Irish descent, her father coming from Cavan, and in one of those quirks of coincidence so does Emily’s partner! So when Janetha spied two Belleek pottery vases discretely decorated with four-leaf clovers and in excellent condition, her interest was piqued. Jessica gave the nod of approval; condition is essential for any ceramics and these vases were collectable. And at the negotiated price of just £15 for the pair she felt that a profit was there to be had.

Knowing that the next sale on 27th November has a designer theme and aware that at the moment designer glass is having a purple patch, Jessica suggested that the Danish Orrefors candle holder with its sleek lines and with an appeal for younger buyers would be a good buy. Adrian and Janetha snapped this up at the reduced from £12.95 price at just £10!

Meanwhile Emily and Janet had come upon a cluster of hand-painted Poole Pottery items. An avid collector of the 60s Delphis range of orange pottery, Janet was very tempted, and when the vendor generously included a later copy of a pottery inhaler for the generous price of £6.50 the sale was made. The hand-painted Poole Pottery vase at £7.50 also made the cut. There was a distraction for the couple – a pair of vintage Sunny Jim Rag Dolls playing to Emily’s fondness of the name (her Grandfather’s and sons) Forces wheat flakes advertising memorabilia from the 30s or 40s was immediately overshadowed by the handmade wooden Victorian rocking crib and this, reduced to just £10 from a ticket price of £24, was too good a bargain to miss. Jessica highlighted the saleability of the item which was in good condition and perfect for collectors to use to display their teddies or dolls. Janet was taken with the tactile nature of the wood – the sale was made!

Animals crafted into jewellery or other functional items are very popular at the moment and so the little donkey lighter was deemed by Jessica to be very collectable. With Christmas on the horizon this was a good find and the price negotiated down from £12.50 to just £7 made its way into Adrian and Janetha’s haul. The couple had looked at a glass Wedgwood bird at £8.95, but Jessica pointed out that she would normally sell these as part of a larger group and so the couple settled on a bird place setting with the appearance of metal at £5.

The most unusual purchase of the day went to the couple from Godsey who immediately

replaced a choice of a chrome jaguar ashtray which would have been a part of automobile memorabilia at auction. Instead they chose ‘the lesser known green mirror bird’. As a gesture to the charity the vendor reduced the price from £20 to £15 and Jessica was delighted – a real talking point on sale day!

Keen Poole collector, Janet had to be dissuaded from buying a beautiful Poole bowl for herself. Jessica testified that the design was very popular at the moment and the piece was highly collectable and at £5 a very attractive price as well. It was hastily put with the Creative Touch’s cluster of items on the counter.

Emily and Janet completed their purchases with a striking enamel and crystal scarab beetle brooch, and a highly giftable cloisonné pill box with an enamel brandy decanter label, reduced to just £8.50 for the pair. Collected together and carefully wrapped, the collection will make its way to Stamford Auction Rooms for the sale on 27th November.
