Falling in Love

Please

Dear Readers,

I am overjoyed to share the 2023 Distinctively Southern Wedding Edition with you all. It was quite the project – each page being a true labor of love from our team and talented contributors. The most rewarding part for us was the bridal fashion, photographed at the iconic Hermitage Hotel. Seeing our bridal fashion vision come to life, while showcasing the Hotel’s bygone architecture with the recent refresh, was gratifying for each of us. As we moved throughout the hotel and conversations were had, I realized that The Hermitage Hotel has something borrowed, something blue…and something new! From the “Votes for Women” sashes, paying homage to the 19th Amendment, to the blue accents in the Veranda (whiskey tearoom) to the new faces that pass through the doors, lobby and restaurant each day, the hotel has been a gathering place for over a century. I am thankful we were given the opportunity to be a part of that.

As I looked through each of this edition’s wedding profiles, some being dear friends of mine, I realized I could not write this letter without sharing my parents and their love.

My parents, Margaret and Ed, wed on August 3, 1991 and have set a wonderful example of

love for me. They have always chosen to see the good in each other, with the wholehearted belief that love conquers all. Their acts of kindness to one another were normal for me growing up and, in the moment, went unnoticed. But, as I grow older, I see how a good morning note, a full tank of gas or a trip abroad pays dividends in a marriage and is a true testament to their generosity and loyalty to each other.

With that, I’ll admit, watching their love made me a hopeless romantic – but I wouldn’t change that. The gift of dreaming of a relationship like my parents is something I am thankful for. Even after thirty-one years of marriage, their love for each other just grows stronger and in different ways. So, before I go on and on about heart-gushing love, I invite you to enjoy this beautiful bridal magazine! Because who doesn’t love love?

Cheers to Love, Amelia – Still looking for Mr. Right!

Bridal 2023

TRENDS

Angular Necklines

While soft, sweetheart necklines will always be a bridal staple; designers are taking a sharp turn this season with more angular, pointed bodices. Often strapless, we tell our brides not to fear! Packed with support, these necklines offer a modern twist to show off the collarbone.

At Adorn Nashville, we love to keep our brides up to date with the hottest, most beautiful bridal trends of the new year, fresh from the runway. Working closely with our designers at bridal markets across the globe, our team hand-selects a collection of wedding gowns curated specially for the Adorn Bride. From elaborate ballgowns to sleek and structured, minimal dresses, we have got the inside scoop on our top four trends, fresh for the stylish Tennessee bride!

Big Sleeves

The drama of the 80s is back in a very modern way. This season, our designers and brides are loving exaggerated sleeves to bring a bit extra drama, and coverage, to their bridal looks. Designers have finally taken the hint and made most sleeves detachable for extra mobility to dance the night away.

Over the Top Ballgowns

Want to feel like a royal on your wedding day? This season of ballgowns has you covered! From larger-than-life floral appliques to exquisitely textured fabrics, our designers are the epitome of indulgence. Fit to make you feel like a queen; these gowns make a statement.

At Adorn Nashville, we help over 1,000 brides on their journey to finding their dream dress every year. And while we are passionate about adorning our brides in the latest trends, what truly matters is how you feel in the dress. This is your day! We want you to feel comfortable, confident, and truly authentic. Empowered brides are the best brides.

Playful Slits

Subtly sultry, slitted wedding dresses are our top request for 2023! Not only do you have a little extra room for boogying down at the reception, but it might be the one opportunity for you to show off your shoes during your big day.

To request an appointment or learn more about our designers, visit our website at adornnashville.com. Brides can also find information about upcoming events, such as designer trunk shows, where you get an exclusive opportunity to see the latest releases from our renowned designers, like Berta and Rita Vinieris. We would love to help you find your dream dress at Adorn Nashville!

Seven Surprisingly Strict Wedding Etiquette Rules From Emily Post

Emily Post was renowned for her advice for behaving properly in society, especially when it came to the sometimes tricky realm of wedding etiquette. Most of us know the basics when it comes to the usual rules and traditions couples follow on their big day, but you might be surprised by just how strict Emily was when it came to her expectations for perfectly planned nuptials.

Couples nowadays tend to buck pretty much all of these seemingly outdated rules — though they were as good as law back when Emily wrote them in 1922 in Etiquette in Society, in Business, in Politics and at Home. Take a look at the many surprisingly restrictive wedding rules she was famous for dishing out. You might even learn just how many of them you or your loved ones have broken on your own wedding days.

1. You Should Not Omit Inviting Friends Just Because They’re Poor:

Obviously, most modern couples aren’t so gift-oriented that they would stoop to such tactics, but apparently it was a big enough issue back in the day for Emily to issue this “word of warning.”

2. The Groom’s Family Should Never Pay A Single Cent For the Reception:

Couples today have no qualm sharing the financial load of the wedding day between them (though perhaps with some help from both sides of the family), but Emily was steadfastly against the idea. In fact, she lists

this as the “one unalterable rule,” saying further that “never under any circumstances should a wedding reception be given at the house of the groom’s family.”

3. The Bride Should Use A Stand-In at Rehearsal:

Although Emily explains that the bride is in charge of the whole ordeal, she also claims that the future missus should never actually take part in it herself. Instead, she should use a “pseudobride” to go through the motions in

4. The Best Man Should Have

She claims the best man’s role is the most difficult on the dayof, describing them as a “cross between trained nurse, valet, general manager and keeper.”

According to her, this means that his job entails keeping his “patient” (the groom) from getting too nervous by “jolly[ing] him along as best he can” while simultaneously delivering the bride and groom’s luggage to wherever they will be spending their first night as

5. Bridesmaids Are to Match Each Other Precisely:

Although the color between each of the ladies can vary, Emily’s rules state that the texture and model must be exact replicas of the same design. She also says that the bride makes the selection of dress “without considering or even consulting them as to their taste or preference.”

DISTINCTIVELY SOUTHERN WEDDING | Marry Me 10 |

6. The Bride Should Arrive Late for The Ceremony:

For the “perfectly managed wedding,” Emily claims a bride should arrive one minute after the hour in order to give the latecomers a chance to find their place before her march begins.

7. Widows Should Not Have Bridesmaids When Remarrying:

They’re less necessary since, according to Emily, she won’t be bothered to wear a dress with a long train — and it of course most certainly won’t be white, or feature orange blossoms on it, as those are emblems of virginity. Instead, they should don a “traveling dress” or other more casual design. She should also keep the ceremony small since her bare procession will do little to impress any guests — that is, unless “she is beautiful enough to compensate for all that is missing.”

FRANKLIN’S

Newest Neighbor

THE WHITE MAGNOLIA BRIDAL COLLECTION

oversees each store’s design and overall aesthetic, aiming to make each store unique to its market. The Atlanta store, for example, sits in a cozy 1930s cottage home, while The White Magnolia Palm Beach embraces an industrial vibe with sixteen-foot ceilings and exposed wooden rafters. Inventory is similar between stores, but not identical, as Kerrie and Mallory adjust gowns and designers based on exclusivity and market research. In October 2021, the seventh White Magnolia boutique opened in Nashville.

The year is 2010. Kerrie Hileman, a newly engaged accountant, has found herself frustrated with the wedding gown offerings in her hometown of Jacksonville, Florida. Lack of privacy and no personal touches made wedding dress shopping feel more like a chore than the special experience she hoped for. And in that moment, an idea was born. After pushing numbers around a spreadsheet paired with the dissatisfied feeling of her current career, Kerrie decided to start her own bridal boutique.

Several months later, The White Magnolia opened its doors for the first time in Jacksonville. Within a few years, the store experienced tremendous growth and opened its second Florida location in Tampa. During a girls’ getaway in 2014, Kerrie met fellow accountant Mallory Thorburn through mutual friends. After detailing her disappointing experiences shopping for a wedding dress, the two decided to join forces. Mallory and Kerrie became official co-owners of the business and, in the same year, opened The White Magnolia in Atlanta.

With Mallory by her side and a third store in the fold, Kerrie felt ready to grow The White Magnolia even more – confident she had the formula, tools and experience to branch out into additional markets. The Greenville, South Carolina, store opened in 2016, followed by Palm Beach and Savannah in 2019. Though each store has a similar overall feel, they are not simply duplicates of each other. Mallory

Located in historic downtown, The White Magnolia is one of Franklin’s newest neighbors. A cozy cottage feel with bright, open windows invites you to experience a warm and sentimental moment with loved ones. The sophisticated yet relaxed atmosphere allows brides to feel at home in a private suite, just for them. A unique element to each

store, including Nashville, is the ninety-minute bridal appointment – a personal one-on-one shopping experience with a dedicated bridal stylist. The light and airy gown room is where all bridal dreams come true, housing top designer names like Made With Love, Martina Liana, Kelly Faetanini, Zavana Bridal, Mikaella, Paloma Blanca, Watters and so many more. In January, Kerrie and Mallory launched The First Look Collection, an exclusive line of wedding gowns only available at White Magnolia boutiques. When a bride chooses The White Magnolia, they can not only expect a curated gown collection of unique silhouettes and styles, but an experience not found anywhere else.

BEST BACHELORETTE DESTINATION

Over the past few years, Nashville has become one of the most popular destinations to take a bachelorette trip. Two years ago, before I had moved to Nashville, my best friend decided to have her bachelorette trip here, and let me tell you, it was the most fun I have ever had! Nashville is known as NashVegas because it is called the Vegas of the South. So it is the perfect nickname to go along with all the fun activities to do here. Nashville is jam-packed with places to go from party buses, fun directive hotels with rooftops and Broadway bars. Here are a few of my favorite places and activities to do when I was attending a bachelorette party here!

WHERE TO STAY

There are so many places to stay in Nashville that it can be overwhelming, especially when you have never been to the city and are unfamiliar with the different neighborhoods. You want to be in a safe, walkable area, whether you are staying in a hotel or an Airbnb. Staying near downtown Nashville would be the best option, so you are close to all the fun! I suggest staying in the heart of actual downtown Nashville, or a close by neighborhood like the Gulch, 12 South or Midtown. If you have a larger party size, Airbnb is the way to go! It allows you to have tons of room for your guests. If your party is on the smaller side and you want to be all together, I suggest a fun hotel. Two of my favorite hotels in Nashville are The Graduate Hotel and The Virgin Hotel; both perfect for a bachelorette trip!

WHERE TO BAR HOP

When you think of Nashville, most likely your next thought is Broadway and live music. Of course, one of the main attractions in Nashville is Broadway itself. With so many bars to bar-hop from, and live music filling the air, you are bound to have a great time with your gals! Some of my favorite bars on Broadway are The Stage, Florida Georgia Line ( Luke Bryan’s bar) and The Valentine,

just to name a few. But, if Broadway isn’t your scene, do not worry! Midtown is a great alternative and is a little more laid back than the hustle and bustle of Broadway. One of my favorite Nashville bars is Loser’s Bar, located in Midtown. Every Friday night, Loser’s has their famous “Loser’s Band” that plays, which you do not want to miss! In the summer, they even have Whiskey Jam, a free live outdoor concert with an amazing lineup.

WHERE TO EAT

Nashville has a ton of places to eat, with different types of cuisine and for all meal types, whether it be breakfast, brunch, lunch or dinner. The must-haves that you will want to add to your list are The Hampton Social, The Listening Room, Liberty Common, Butchertown Hall and Bartaco. The Hampton Social and Liberty Common are near each other and just a few blocks from Broadway. Both overlook the river and have the best bachelorette and girly vibe you could want! The Listening Room is a live songwriter cafe where you can eat great food and listen to upcoming artists. Just make sure to buy your ticket beforehand on their website. Finally, if you are looking for good tacos and southwestern food, Butchertown Hall and Bartaco are your go-to places!

WHAT TO DO DURING THE DAY

There are so many things to choose from besides just going to a bar! The Nashville Tractor is one of my all-time favorite things to do; you get a tour of Nashville in a fun, unique way while having great music blaring! If you want to get away from the city life for the day, Arrington Vineyards is a great place to have a laid-back, fun day with your girls, and their wine is excellent. Go take those commemorative photos in front of the famous Nashville murals, 12 South or The Gulch – great areas to walk around and get quality tourist photos. Last but not least, the Dry Bar is the place to get pampered while getting the most amazing blowout.

For more planning ideas nashvilleguru.com and sipsandthecitynash.com are great resources. The Sips and the City girls will even make reservations for you and plan your itinerary if you do not know where to begin. Nashville Guru is a mega website with all the things to do in Nashville in one spot. And the best part is, it is free and easy to use.

I hope this guide gave you more insight on where to go when planning your most memorable bachelorette trip yet!

A COMPLETE GUIDE TO WRITING THANK YOU NOTES

Writing thank-you notes is probably not the first thing on your mind as you plan your wedding. However, writing thank-you notes is a very important part of the planning process. If you get organized now, writing thank-you notes after the honeymoon will be a breeze!

WHO RECEIVES A THANK YOU NOTE?

Anyone who gave you a wedding gift, whether tangible or intangible – such as a party – should receive a thank you note as a kind gesture from you and your spouse! This includes your parents and in-laws, your wedding party, wedding planners and vendors, shower and engagement party hosts and any guest who attended your wedding.

FOR MONEY

“Thank you so much for celebrating our special day with us! We are so grateful for your generous gift. Thanks to you, we were able to book the cooking class we have had our eye on for our honeymoon. Looking forward to seeing you over the holidays!”

“Thank you so much for your generous gift. (Insert significant other’s name) and I will be putting it towards our honeymoon fund to take our dream trip to Greece next year. We are very fortunate to have you both in our lives and to share our big day. It really wouldn’t have been the same without you at our wedding. We look forward to starting the next chapter of our lives together and sharing many more memories with you!”

FOR ATTENDING

“From the bottom of our hearts, we thank you for sharing our special day with us. We felt the love and sincerity all around us, making it the most memorable day of our lives. We look forward to starting the next chapter of our lives together and sharing many more memories with you!”

FOR THE OUT OF TOWN GUEST

“Seeing your bright smiling faces beaming at me as I walked down the aisle was so delightful! Thank you so much for traveling so far to attend our special day and making it the most memorable day of our lives. Thank you so much for the KitchenAid mixer. It fits perfectly with our kitchen decor, and we can’t wait to put it to good use. Next year we hope to have an opportunity to visit you in New York.”

FOR A GIFT

“Thank you so much for the lovely, engraved champagne glasses. They are now prominently displayed in our glassware cabinet. We plan to get them out each wedding anniversary for an annual toast to love, happiness, prosperity and continued marital bliss!”

From the bottom of our hearts, we thank you for sharing our special day with us. We are beyond grateful for your presence, warmest wishes and gift(s), and look forward to creating and celebrating many more memories with you!”

with love, DSW

MORE than a dress

WITH MELANIE BROWN, OWNER OF BELLA BRIDESMAIDS

What would your wedding day be like without your squad surrounding you? Each of your bridesmaids have a special place in your life and their dresses should be no different. Their attire truly is a huge part of completing the vision for your wedding and you surely would not want a remake of 27 Dresses. We have all worn dresses that might have matched the bride’s vision but didn’t exactly make our dreams come true. But, what if you could do both?

With the busy wedding season upon us, I have curated three collections that go deeper than just matching styles and colors. Each collection shows examples of beautiful dresses that are on point with current wedding trends, and offer unique options for each bridesmaids personal style and shape.

Dresses:

Lazaro styles in cashmere crepe de chine, Jenny Yoo Aubrey in black knit crepe, Christina Wu Celebrations 22140 in black slipper satin, Watters Bianca in prosecco lucios charmeuse

Black tie weddings are resurging, and we are here for it! After wearing our pajamas on Zoom calls, it feels glamorous to dress to the nines! For black tie weddings, the cohesion of styles is essential. Maybe all your ladies will wear the same dress. Or maybe you will let them choose a style while keeping everyone in the same color and fabric. Champagne or black are often chosen colors, although the color options are abundant! Structured fabrics such as satin, faille and crepe are perfect for these polished and sophisticated looks.

Dresses:

Jenny Yoo Eloise in whisper blue satin, Lulakate Jacqueline in Lily of the Valley print, Alfred Sung D826FP in Cottage Rose Larkspur, Watters Lina in Smokey Blue stretch crepe

ENGLISH GARDEN BLUE

Maybe it is Bridgerton…maybe it is the hope of spring, but whatever the motivation, blue florals are everywhere! That mix-and-match look can be achieved by combining multiple prints, sprinkled in with a few solids. Coordinating color undertones, and balancing the fabrics chosen, are important factors to consider when putting together this look.

ACRYLIC CHAIRS FOR WEDDINGS & EVENTS

DISTINCTIVELY SOUTHERN WEDDING | On Trend 40 |
PHOTOGRAPHY BY JENNA HENDERSON

Associated with contemporary art, acrylic is making its way into modern event design. Now used in various furniture designs, it is a unique addition to any event. The most popular use, however, is in chairs! Typically referred to as “ghost chairs,” this style is a fun, modern twist that can be pulled off year-round. Keep reading to learn how to feature these pieces at your upcoming event!

On-Trend Ceremony Seating

Go with acrylic chairs if you want to wow guests when they enter your wedding event space! Acrylic seating is a simple way to elevate your event, regardless of style or theme. Our most popular chairs for wedding ceremonies are the Acrylic Ghost Arm Chair and Acrylic Ghost Armless Chair

The oval shape of the back of these chairs will lend a sophisticated look that will complement any venue, modern, urban or outdoor. This style is also easy to decorate with ribbon or vinyl appliques across the back.

Timeless Reception Tables

Our favorite way to feature acrylic chairs is at receptions – whether a wedding, corporate event or personal gathering. This style of chair will complement any table, such as our Fruitwood Farm Tables or linens. When choosing the type of seating, we recommend considering your event theme. Whether you are hosting

a minimalist or modern event, any Southern Events Ghost Chairs will do the job. For a romantic or whimsical theme, we prefer the Acrylic Carrigan Side Chair due to the intricate back. While the Acrylic Fantasma Side Chair is an easy choice if you want something otherworldly or ethereal.

Pro Tip: Planning to have designated tables for children? Be sure to grab a handful of our Acrylic Chiavari Children’s Chairs

Modern Cocktail Hours

We can’t forget the cocktail hour setup! Big or small, a memorable cocktail hour calls for stylish and comfortable seating, with ample space for guests to sit and mingle. If you are planning to feature a lounge, any of our acrylic chairs make for beautiful add-ons. And these chairs are extremely comfortable, too! For a lounge, we recommend seating with arms. Whereas at cocktail tables or bar tables, arms aren’t necessary. These areas will work well with our armless or backless styles, such as the Acrylic Ghost Barstool, Acrylic Casper Oval Back Barstool, or Acrylic Casper Square Back Barstool

Our acrylic chairs book up fast! To feature any of these pieces at an upcoming event, email us at info@southerneventsonline. com. For more event design inspiration, check out our blog on southerneventsonline.com.

A SHOPPING EXPERIENCE made for you

Maybe it is because I was born on Valentine’s Day that I truly do love, love! Femininity, romance and beauty have always held a special place in my heart. As a young girl, I watched in awe as my grandmother intricately sewed dresses for my two sisters and me. The skill and pride she had for her talent inspired my love of fashion and fabrics. It is the women in my life who have helped the most in shaping who I am today. From my grandma’s care in her craft of making dresses; to my mom’s constant love and support; to my twin sister and my older sister always being right there by my side; and the many other aunts, cousins, friends and mentors along the way – I am inspired daily to be there for other women, the same way the women in my life have been for me.

With almost twenty years of experience in the fashion and textile industry, my expertise and passion unite to serve brides. After a few years working in the bridal industry for other companies, I wanted to create something for brides that did not exist and simplify the wedding gown shopping experience. My goal was to bring a more organic, authentic experience to women and steer clear of mass-produced, mainstream bridal.

Your wedding dress shopping experience should be uniquely tailored to YOU...because you are anything but cookie-cutter!

Our Nashville bridal shop carries only ethical, sustainable wedding dresses that are hand-picked for their quality, style and originality.

As soon as you walk through our doors for your seventy-five-minute private wedding dress shopping experience, you can expect your stylist to listen and work with you to find the dress of your dreams.

The cherry on top? Once you find the dress made for you, it is yours. Our streamlined process allows you to walk out of the store that day with your ready-to-wear dress and all the resources needed for your next steps. Ila Bridal believes in an elevated bridal experience. And that means high standards, intentionality, simplicity and a little magic.

Since our doors opened in November 2018, Ila Bridal has been committed to providing original, high-fashion wedding gowns from some of the world’s most talented and sought-after designers. We work directly with many of them to offer a one-of-a-kind style. We partner with independent designers because of their craftsmanship, quality and ethical practices. All materials and labor are ethically sourced with love and care.

We are proud to offer off-the-rack wedding gowns available for immediate purchase. “Off-the-rack gowns” does not mean sacrificing quality. It means you fall in love with an intentionally sourced, thoughtfully selected, brand-new, ready-to-wear wedding dress you can purchase and take home that same day.

Our gowns range from size two to twenty-four, and prices range from $1,500 to $7,500, with most dresses falling between $2,500 to $4,000. Your budget matters to us, so we only show dresses within the range you give us.

From the sourcing of the dress to the bride who wears it down the aisle, Ila Bridal cares. And you can trust that we maintain only the highest standards every step of the way because a wedding gown should reflect not just a bride’s style but a celebration of who they are from the inside out.

OUQUET OF UTTERCREAMB

AN INTERVIEW WITH KATHERINE OF BLOOMING KUPCAKES

bouquet of buttercream? Say less. Katherine Halbeck, Founder & CEO of Blooming Kupcakes, has been creating cupcakes that are too pretty to eat since its opening in 2020. Before cupcake designing, Katherine worked in the medical and legal fields for nearly thirty years. While working as a legal assistant at a law firm in 2020, the pandemic resulted in a thirty-day furlough for Katherine. “One night when I was restless, I scrolled through Instagram and found a baker piping buttercream on some cupcakes,” Katherine shares. “I was so mesmerized that I clicked on one reel after another from various bakers and found myself ordering a set of piping nozzles and tools the very next morning. Within a few weeks, I realized I had a good grasp of piping and handcrafting beautiful florals on cupcakes.” Just months later, in June 2020, Blooming Kupcakes was born!

In less than two years of receiving business, Katherine designed cupcakes for celebrities such as Reese Witherspoon, Dolly Parton, Barbara Eden and Miranda Lambert. Keep reading to get a behind-the-scenes glimpse of Katherine and Blooming Kupcakes!

IS BLOOMING KUPCAKES A ONE-WOMAN SHOW?

The piping aspect of my work is a one-woman show, but I couldn’t do this without my husband, Andy. He has taken over the baking and making of our delicious buttercream to allow more time for me to design and handcraft these beautiful creations.

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE YOU TO DESIGN & DECORATE EACH CUPCAKE?

Each floral design is different. Rosettes can take up to a minute, but some of my more complex multi-flowered cupcakes can take several minutes. I need to consider the additional time required in switching out piping tips or creating a new color palette, color mixing and any other additions to the cupcake like making wafer eucalyptus leaves.

WHAT IS THE MOST CHALLENGING ASPECT OF CUPCAKE DECORATING?

The most challenging aspect of cupcake decorating is fine-tuning my piping tips to get the desired results. Sometimes I want the buttercream to flow out less to get a more realistic-looking petal. From time to time, I suggest adjusting your buttercream recipe to get the look of a more translucent-looking flower petal.

DISTINCTIVELY SOUTHERN WEDDING | Marry Me
52 |

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE DECORATING TECHNIQUE YOU USE DAILY?

I love utilizing my flower nail, which allows me more creativity and movement in handcrafting my floral designs. In addition, one of my favorite hacks to share is “what to do when your piping bag bursts?” After months of struggling with this myself, I have found that if you are going to pipe a lot or use stiff buttercream, it is best to use scotch tape around your piping tip to adhere to the piping bag. This provides many hours of use without any complications.

WHY IS USING NATURAL INGREDIENTS AND OFFERING GLUTEN-FREE CUPCAKES VITAL TO YOU?

When we went to a local big box store bakery and saw all the ingredients listed on their cupcake products – some of which you cannot pronounce –, I vowed only to make cupcakes with the finest ingredients available to us. The foods and ingredients we put into our bodies are very important. So, with that in mind, we decided to import our flour from Europe to provide a very finely milled, softer and slightly sweeter flour for all to enjoy.

We also offer gluten-free cupcakes. My daughter and I are both gluten intolerant. For years, we have struggled to find delicious gluten-free desserts. Identifying the right flour combination has been key to the success of our delicious cupcakes, both regular and gluten-free.

WHAT ARE SOME TREASURED MILESTONES THUS FAR FOR YOUR BUSINESS?

The day I quit my full-time day job and became

an independent woman-owned business owner. But most importantly, the love and recognition from our community of supporters and local media.

WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR BEGINNERS WHO WANT TO START DECORATING CUPCAKES?

Anyone who wants to start decorating cupcakes or cakes should purchase a set of basic piping tips and the Americolor Soft Gel Paste Beginner Kit. Wilton sells a beginner’s nine-piece or twenty-two-piece Starter Decorating Piping Tip Set, which you can purchase at places like Target, Hobby Lobby, Michaels and Amazon. In addition, many free tutorials on YouTube can teach you how to make buttercream and pipe some basic flowers. Most importantly, have fun baking and being creative.

Margie Church Dobler

FRANKLIN’S FAVORITE FLORIST

Margie Church Dobler is the owner of Always In Bloom, Inc., located on Franklin Road across from The Factory at Franklin. Margie opened her doors twenty-eight years ago and is ALWAYS known to go the extra mile for her customers; whether it be flowers for a wedding, birthday or passing of a loved one, Margie is there to give you real, local service.

How long have you lived in Williamson County?

I have lived in Williamson County all my life – seventy-two years. I love Williamson County and Franklin. The people here have always been so kind and loyal to the small mom-and-pop businesses. My mother had a hair salon on Main Street, and my stepfather owned the infamous Auction Barn in downtown Franklin. My father’s family goes back at least five generations, as he was born in the Cool Springs house.

What led you to choose your profession?

I am a professional Floral Artist and Designer. I love the beauty of flowers and how special they make people feel.

Three words that best describe you. Thoughtful, caring and stubborn.

What do you like to do in your spare time?

One of my favorite things about growing up in Williamson County is staying in touch with my friends that also grew up here. We try to go to lunch or dinner at least once a month, and our conversations always revert to how grateful we feel to have grown up in Franklin.

Where is your favorite place to go in Williamson County?

One of my favorite places to go is The Franklin Theatre. I have seen it go from sticky, bubble gum-covered floors to the fabulous theater it is today. My Franklin High School class of 1968 purchased one of the seats.

What keeps you motivated and inspired?

The smiles my profession puts on people’s faces when they receive their flowers make me want to continue my education and inspire my son Michael to continue to be a part of the changes in floristry.

What organizations are you involved with?

I am the President of Central Tennessee Professional Florists’ Association. Also, I am a Past President of the Tennessee State Florists’ Association.

What is the one thing you do not go a day without?

I try not to go a day without thanking the Lord for the angel that rides on my shoulder.

Finish this statement. I AM Williamson County because: Dynamite could not blast me away from here – something my late husband used to tell me. He was probably correct. My shop has been through two fires and a flood, but those were nothing like the current road construction the last three years! But, that is progress. I love talking to people about how special it was growing up in a wonderful county and town. My son and I are proud to call ourselves Williamson Countians.

HOW HUGH

See’s It

HOW TO MAKE THE MOST OF YOUR WEDDING PLANNER’S SERVICES

can’t remember a day that goes by when someone doesn’t ask me a wedding question. Whether they are a friend, client or a dental assistant. They ask me everything from “Do I need flowers at the church?” or “Can I just pay for the band or the bar and not tell anyone?” to “Would you just marry my daughter, and come live with us, and help me pick out pillows for my sunroom?”

I have heard it all, and I look forward to hearing a lot more! Here are my takes on a few categories surrounding wedding planning, beginning with communication.

COMMUNICATION

I have always said event planners were created because a caterer said they would handle the party, and you can imagine what happened. Much like a subcontractor, our role was established – to confirm, finalize, execute and strike. Let’s begin with communication! Communicating with your planner is so basic, but it really is the only key to success! From the minute you begin, establish your budget, and then determine your roles. Think of your wedding planner as a favorite camp counselor, who will take you under their wing and guide you for the next few months.

TRUST

Trust is a huge factor in wedding planning, it is a huge investment and should be turned over to a professional to execute. Both planner and client must feel comfortable with each other, and you will know from the start if it is the right fit!

DISTINCTIVELY SOUTHERN WEDDING | Marry Me
Jordan Cheshire & Jonathan Eudy wedding

Photography by Allan Zepeda

This goes for the client as well. Years ago, I identified the “Sneaky Mom” persona – a client who commits the worst crime, going behind a planner’s back and contacting a vendor without anyone knowing. These are moms who commit the ultimate NO NO…. Contacting a vendor without telling you.

“SNEAKY MOM” NO NO’S

1. Setting up a meeting without telling you – some sneaky moms will try and arrive early for an appointment to talk to the vendor before the planner arrives! I always arrive early when I’ve got a sneaky one…it just about does them in.

2. Creating their own timeline without telling you.

3. Throwing curve balls at you on the wedding day! “We forgot to tell you about a family heirloom, Uncle Carl can’t eat carrots, Aunt Bernice cannot be outside, and they require a back pillow for their dinner chair, the list goes on.

I make them laugh and keep them distracted the whole time with vodka. Or wad up extra linen and create a bolster pillow.

BOUNDARIES

I have none, but I really should get them. I drag fabric samples to clients’ offices, homes, etc., and take calls and emails all day and night. I never thought about it because I love to talk about design, so it’s always been a joy. However, you should probably understand office hours in the wild – ZOOM meetings – world we live in. We should set certain times to meet with each other!

This is just a sampling of issues that planners experience, and magically the client never knows, as we handle everything behind the scenes, the event day arrives, and no one has any idea that moments before, we almost ate in a horse stable that I pressure washed. Xoxo

WHY ELOPING MAY BE THE ANSWER FOR YOU

ne of the hardest things about weddings is that they can easily become overwhelming, expensive and less personal. Whether you’re feeling pressure to people please, or the tug to have a destination wedding or you are on a budget – eloping may be the answer for you.

DO IT FOR THE RIGHT REASONS

In 2018, my husband and I eloped to a dreamy destination. Having already booked a wedding venue, the guest list completed, and details upon details laid out, we suddenly felt a nudge in our gut saying, “Is this what we really want?” My husband and I sat at our kitchen table and discussed our wedding in detail, when he said to me, “I feel like we’re the type of people who would hop on a plane, take a handful of our loved ones and get married on a cliff overlooking the ocean!”

That was all I needed to hear, and within hours we canceled our pricey wedding plans. For us, this was the option that made us the most excited! Your wedding day should reflect both your and your partner’s vision, and the freedom that comes with eloping or having a smaller wedding is priceless. You can get as creative as you want and customize every detail to feel like a fairytale.

CHOOSE YOUR DREAM LOCATION

Some of the perks of eloping are choosing a unique and unforgettable location. You are not as limited geographically or creatively as with a traditional wedding, and it is fun to flee to your favorite city or grand destination. It is also a great way to save money, get a vacation out of it and worry about a huge party later. Plan as many details as possible before you leave but leave the smaller ones to decide once you arrive. For example, I picked my bouquet once I arrived at our wedding destination – I opted for a faux bouquet to preserve it forever. You can find amazing florists just about anywhere!

We chose to elope in our favorite place in the United States, Laguna Beach, California. Then, I found my dream photographer and videographer on

DISTINCTIVELY SOUTHERN WEDDING | Here Comes the Bride
PHOTOGRAPHY
60 |
BY LAUREN MIHAE PHOTOGRAPHY

Instagram, and both worked within my budget. I called the city of Laguna Beach and purchased a permit to have private access to our cliff lookout. Our wedding view was worth millions, and I only paid three hundred; that’s one of the perks of eloping to a photogenic destination.

Our photos turned out otherworldly and made for an unforgettable memory of dramatic ocean cliffs and crashing waves. After the pictures were done, we met at an incredible restaurant where we had our private table, wedding cake and live band awaiting us.

DESTINATION DETAILS TO PLAN

• Choose a date Book a location (Research, reserve and purchase permits – with my experience, even outdoor locations have permits)

• Book a photographer/videographer

• Schedule flights/drive time

• Secure hotel accommodations

• Purchase wedding attire

• Invite love ones...or not

• Make reservations for a post-ceremony celebratory meal

Tip: Don’t forget to think of the time of year you want to get married because

the climate and weather of that location will be a factor in choosing your date and location!

REMEMBER THAT MARRIAGE LAWS ARE DIFFERENT ALL OVER

This is an important part of planning an elopement that will take some research! The last thing you want to do is travel to the other side of the world without the correct documents. Take note of any local laws that might affect your day as well. For example, if you want to elope on a Sunday in the gorgeous Smoky Mountains of Tennessee, buy the champagne or liquor you desire the day before since all the liquor stores will be closed on Sunday.

Another option is to consider a symbolic ceremony. This means that your ceremony on your elopement day will not be legally binding. Couples who go this route will get married legally where they live, so the paperwork is out of the way, and they do not have to deal with all the logistics. I recommend this route to anyone who is getting married in a country where they do not live and possibly if you are getting married in another state. The process of getting legally married in a different state is, of course, much easier, but there can still be some hurdles to jump, depending on the

state. So, do your research to determine the best option for you!

There are countless destination and elopement photographers all around the world that you can connect with via social media. If you are staying in the United States or traveling to another country, elopement photographers often make excellent tour guides. It is an even better investment if you choose to elope in the same place as your honeymoon.

You and your partner should feel like you are honoring each other’s wishes and love languages on your wedding day. For some this may mean choosing to have a more intimate ceremony, then heading to a huge after-party...compromise is key.

My tip for newlyweds is to have the same conversation my husband provoked at the kitchen table, “Are we really doing what feels most exciting and authentic for us?” If the answer is no, then get creative! My wedding was the most luxurious day –better than I could have ever imagined – and it did not break the bank! Most importantly, weddings are about having fun. It is a magical way to start your newlywed bliss, so regardless of what your dream wedding may look like, just remember that when you are intentional with your special day, it is rewarding and fosters a memory that holds zero regrets.
