LAKEWOOD RANCH — More than three years after it was first approved, the Villages of Lakewood Ranch South project moved closer to getting off the ground with the Sarasota County Commission’s Oct. 9 ruling. The County Commission

unanimously approved an amendment to its contract with project developer SchroederManatee Ranch that allows it to begin residential construction on the 5,500-acre project before some roadway improvements have been completed.

Still, construction on the Villages project, the first villagestyle development ever approved under Sarasota County’s 2050 growth-management plan, won’t begin until SMR submits an application to amend the Development of Regional Impact.

That amendment will address outstanding issues that have prevented SMR from beginning work on the project. “I won’t pop any champagne corks yet,” said Rex Jensen, presi-

Now, we have to resolve other impediments that have prevented this thing from getting going.” SMR and other developers especially have problems with a fiscal neutrality rule — as part of the 2050 plan — that requires projects to periodically prove they fully pay for the public services they receive and do not burden existing taxpayers. Jensen has said SMR won’t begin the project, which plans for 5,144 residential units and 390,000 square feet of commercial space, if he’s not sure he can finish it. “Hopefully, this agreement gets this moving faster now,” said Sarasota Commissioner Joe Barbetta. “I’m very troubled that we won’t see a stick in the ground for a long, long time.” The amendment agreed to at the commission meeting updates the construction schedule of already approved road projects related to the Villages and adds a proportionate share road project — where costs will be borne by SMR and the county. In 2010, SMR committed to funding the following three improvements to mitigate project traffic: • The continuation of Lakewood Ranch Boulevard as a fourlane roadway from its current ending at Communications Parkway to Fruitville Road; • The continuation of Lorraine Road as a four-lane road from University Parkway to Fruitville Road; • The construction of an east-

INTERSTATE 75/CATTLEMEN ROAD OVERPASS COULD IMPACT ‘DIVERGING DIAMOND’ PLAN If Sarasota County commissioners choose an east-west connector overpass from the Villages of Lakewood Ranch South over Interstate 75 and Cattlemen Road, it might provide an alternative — or help ease the costs — of a plan for the University Parkway interchange that has drawn critics. The Florida Department of Transportation is proposing a new diverging-diamond-style configuration for the interchange at University Parkway and Interstate 75.    FDOT has said changing the interchange from a diamond design to a diverging-diamond construction would accommodate increased traffic from the Mall at University Town Center, opening in October 2014, and Nathan Benderson Park, which will host the 2017 World Rowing Championships. Jonathan Paul, Sarasota County interim transportation planning director, said the overpass would cost $11 million to

$15 million, considerably less than the still unfunded FDOT plan. Sarasota County commissioners, who say their projected share for the interchange could total $25 million, said they will draft a memo to FDOT expressing their opposition to the interchange plans and documenting some alternatives. “If we have to pony up some money, I’d much rather explore this than convert University Parkway into a freeway,” said Sarasota Commissioner Joe Barbetta. Manatee and Sarasota officials are already expressing their concerns about the interchange, an estimated $49 million Florida Department of Transportation project that still doesn’t have funding for construction and that would also require additional roadway improvements paid for by the local governments. Though FDOT will eventually use state or federal funds to pay for the new interchange, the proj-

Swim team makes splashy effort to retain its home pool After Manatee County threatened to close it, Braden River High School’s swim team learned it can practice at John H. Marble Pool for another year.

Marble Pool is closed during the summer and lacks professional amenities that other nearby pools have, but the Pirates are happy to have a home. Ranch’s swim team before this season to stay with the Pirates. When, two weeks before the season started, Schwenk learned the county was planning to close the pool Aug. 19 — the first day of school for students — he pushed his swimmers to pool their voices. “It’s the most stressed I’ve been as coach,” Schwenk said. “But I told the team, ‘This is your facility, not mine.’ You have to be active in trying to save it.” The county eventually granted the Pirates a stay of execution, allowing them to continue to use the John H. Marble Pool through the remainder of the season. However, Braden River had to pay for the chemicals to keep the pool open.   The team worked in conjunction with the Athletic Booster Club to raise the $2,500 necessary to pay for the chemicals.   “I have never done something like this before,” Graves said. “It shows we can make a real-life impact.” Now, the team wants more.

Debbie Graves, John Graves’ mother and the treasurer of the Braden River Athletics Booster Club, is working to put together a committee of community members to come up with a permanent place to swim — whether at John H. Marble Pool or elsewhere. Schwenk says the pool will probably host swim meets next year, and he said Southeast will practice there next season. He’d like the county to pay to heat the pool, so that it can be open year-round and attract young families. “It’s not the Ritz, but John H. Marble Pool is still a viable pool,” Schwenk said. “I hope the county in the future has the wisdom and foresight to look ahead at the facilities we do have — and should have — to serve such a fast-growing community. There needs to be something better out east.” Paige Lewandrowski, a Pirate freshmen swimmer, has simpler needs. “I just want to know I have a place to swim when I’m a senior,” she said.

Nature park officially opens Conservatory Park was nearly developed into homes before neighborhood homeowners associations intervened. Now, the 55 acres of wetlands and trails is open for public use. EAST COUNTY — Although Conservatory Park didn’t officially open for public use until earlier this month, eager residents were already taking advantage of the neighborhood destination. Tom Yarger, the construction services manager for the Manatee County Property Management Department, said the county received a certificate of occupancy for the property early this month. A ribbon cutting at an undetermined near date will celebrate the $3.4 million neighborhood nature park north of University Parkway and West of Whitfield Avenue. Yarger said problems with getting bathrooms running properly caused the delay in opening, which was slated for May. People have been seen running and biking on the park’s 1.5-mile nature trail and onemile fitness path before now, signaling the enthusiasm of a community — the park has 14,345 residential units within three miles — who eagerly awaited its arrival. “It’s an absolutely beautiful park,” Yarger said. “It’s one of the most heavily vegetated parks we have. It’s a passive park. It’s really a gem.” Ryland Homes was set to build on 55 acres of wetlands and woodlands that were supposed

to be another plot of land bulldozed and built back up into a residential development. Then, after pleas from neighboring homeowners associations called to preserve it, Manatee County purchased it in 2004 for $3.4 million. A Florida Communities Trust grant supplied half the money, while the other half came from a local matching arrangement. The park has a 10-acre lake with a fishing pier/observation deck and a picnic pavilion.   A previously discussed canoe launch was not installed because of safety concerns. “The side slopes in the lake are very, very steep,” Yarger said. “It’s very dangerous. We don’t encourage swimming.” Soon, a nature-like playground will be built near a pavilion with picnic tables. Exercise equipment along the fitness trail will also go in shortly. The county has striped parking areas and installed signage.  The park’s east entrance is at DeSoto Woods Drive, and a north entrance is at Conservatory Drive. The east entrance incorporates a roundabout and small parking area, while the north entrance has a roundabout and more parking.  Work on the property began in July.

EAST COUNTY — The Braden River High School swim team learned it can continue to practice at an off-campus facility through next season, after the Manatee County Board of County Commissioners voted unanimously Oct. 8, to allocate $45,743 for the continued operation of John H. Marble Pool. The county had planned to close the public pool, at 3675 53rd Ave. E., Oct. 31, because parks and recreation officials determined it was underused. The pool is only open to the public in the summer. For the Braden River swim team, whose proponents circulated a petition that garnered 500 signatures, the ruling provides temporary certainty and continues a four-year relationship with a pool that’s suffered broken pool pumps and lacks professional features such as heating, starting blocks and lane lines. “I feel a great sense of relief in the present, but I’m also thinking about new challenges so we get a long-term plan for swimming in this area,” said Tripp Schwenk, Braden River’s second-year swim coach. Without a community pool in East County, with the exception of the Lakewood Ranch YMCA, where both the Lakewood Ranch High and Lakewood Ranch YMCA Wave Runners swim teams train, John H. Marble Pool presents the only viable option for the Pirates. Even now, the swim team occasionally travels 30 minutes across town to G.T. Bray — home to teams such as Manatee, Southeast and the Sarasota Tsunami — to use its starting blocks. Since Schwenk took over the team, 11 boys have grown to 25 to give the Pirates 40 swimmers total. They hope to qualify eight swimmers to regionals, compared to only two last year. Braden River swimmers say the comfort of having a place to swim will stem the tide further. “Lakewood Ranch’s reputation is well-known,” said John Graves, a senior swimmer. “The best club swimmers choose to go there because of that reputation. Closing the pool would have widened the gap. We need this pool.” Schwenk says he turned down an offer to coach Lakewood

The only difference now is our parents aren’t outside waiting in a station wagon.” Once a week since early October, the trio and their five bandmates, including four female singers and a drummer, have

piled into a small studio at the Guitar Center at Cooper Creek. The band, known as The Adhesions, is practicing for Doctor Idol, which will take place Oct. 25. As they rehearse, Ellis and Pegues tap their feet to songs such as “Get Ready” by The Temptations

They reunited again by accident in August. Ellis saw an ad for Pegues’ medical practice in the East County Observer. “I saw his smiling face,” Ellis said. “He looked so damn young. I thought it was his son. They must have done some air brushing.” Ellis, who still has his collection of 1960s instruments but had unofficially retired from music after college, Googled his old bandmate. His wife, Joani, hatched a plan. She phoned Pegues at work. “I’m thinking it’s a patient,” Pegues said. “I’m amazed — floored — when I hear who it is. I thought it was a prank.” Joani Ellis invited Pegues to the Ellises’ five-year wedding anniversary dinner as a surprise guest. More than 40 years later, Pegues crashed the scene again. It didn’t take long for Pegues and Ellis to decide to play music together again. Pegues, formally trained in saxophone since the age of 9, had stayed tuned in with music during his medical career, playing now and again. He knew Steven Weinreb, a professional keyboard player, who had returned to music after retiring from a career as a podiatrist. Pegues and Weinreb performed in 2010 in Doctor Idol, a competition at the Sarasota Hyatt Regency that requires bands to include at least one doctor. “What’s different about us, be-

LAKEWOOD RANCH — The two doctors and former bandmates had lost touch, but a reunion seemed inevitable. “We’re like scar tissue — the band that links together in the organs that’s not easily removed,” Herb Pegues II says of himself and fellow East County resident Jeff Ellis, with whom he hadn’t played music for 40 years — until now. The duo met at Grinnell College in Iowa, when Pegues jumped onto the stage, crashing a rehearsal of Ellis’ college band, The Sheratons, and started playing the saxophone. “I forced my way in,” Pegues said. It was the only band on campus and Pegues wanted to meet girls — a theory the family-practice doctor at Lakewood Ranch Medical Center had proved legitimate at his high school prom. “I had no date when I performed at prom,” Pegues said. “(But) I had a few dates afterward.” Pegues joined Ellis’ band, and they performed at bars and frat houses. Two Manatee County School District administrators stepped down and three others were suspended without pay based on findings from a misconduct investigation of a former Manatee High School assistant football coach.   Former district investigator Debra Horne retired from the district, and former staff attorney Scott Martin resigned from the district. The three other administrators — Assistant Superintendent Bob Gagnon and former Manatee High assistant principals Matthew Kane and Gregg Faller — were suspended without pay by the School Board Oct. 14, with unanimous 5-0 votes on each. This comes after a two-month internal inquiry determined the administrators, including Gagnon, an East County resident who formerly served as assistant principal at Lakewood Ranch High School, poorly responded to groping allegations against Rod Frazier, the football coach.    The five administrators have been on paid leave since August.   Superintendent Rick Mills had recommended the termination of the five administrators. The school board cannot vote on that recommendation until the close of the window in which the administrators can request a hearing. They have 21 days from Oct. 4, when they were served with administrative complaints, to do so. The district’s inquiry supported a police investigation that concluded with Frazier being charged with seven counts of battery

An effort by Manatee and Sarasota counties to merge their transit systems has been put on pause. In an Oct. 10 email to Carolyn Mason, the Sarasota County Commission chairwoman, Randall Reid, Sarasota County administrator, said the Oct. 15 joint commission meeting on the topic was canceled because of the inability of the neighboring counties to come up with a plan both sides support.

The email says Ed Hunzeker, Manatee County administrator, contacted Reid to say he believes, “It is in best interest of the commissions to cancel the Oct. 15 joint meeting until a single agreement exists both sides can support.” Commissioners representing both counties have already met privately to discuss jointly operating their services — Manatee County Area Transit (MCAT) and Sarasota County Area Transit (SCAT) — under a single, private manager. The Oct. 15 meeting was scheduled so county commissioners could try to set an interlocal agreement allowing them to secure a procurement for private-sector bids to run a shared system. In an email, Nick Azzara, Manatee County information outreach coordinator, confirmed the meeting has been canceled, saying, “Though we have yet to reach a consensus at the staff level on how a joint system will operate regionally, staff from the two counties will continue to work on a feasible solution for the two commissions to consider at a later date.”

+ County merges natural resources, parks departments Ed Hunzeker, Manatee County administrator, announced Oct. 8 the merger of the Parks and Recreation department and the Natural Resources Department. The new department will be called the Parks and Natural Resources Department, and it will be headed by Charles Hunsicker, Manatee’s Natural Resources Department director. “Under Charlie’s leadership, we will accomplish a truly global view of the recreational amenities needed to serve our growing community at a critical time as we implement the How Will We Grow plan,” Hunzeker said. The county expects to save $250,000 annually from the merger, which also resulted in the elimination of five Parks and Recreation Department positions. Those positions include the parks and

recreation director, a spot held by Cindy Turner, an East County resident. Nick Azzara, county information outreach coordinator, said county administration and human resources are seeking a new spot for Turner within the organization. Azzara said the merger will create greater efficiencies by bringing together two departments that formerly shared responsibilities for several areas.

+ Planning Commission OKs Eagle Trace expansion The Manatee County Planning Commission recommended approving an expansion of Eagle Trace, a subdivision under construction in East County, at its meeting Oct. 10. The new plan, which Neal Communities, the project’s developer, dubs “phase three,” calls for a rezone of 43.53 acres on the south side of State Road 64 and west of Pope Road from general agriculture to planned development residential. It adds 95 units to the overall development plan, increasing the number of singlefamily homes to 164 units and the amount of semi-detached residences to 114 units. The first two phases of the project will be finished in December. Pat Neal, Neal Communities’ president, said the developer will break ground on the new third phase Jan. 1 — pending the Manatee County Board of County Commissioners approving the plan in November. Eventually, there will be a new alignment of Pope Road as the development grows. Neal Communities will be responsible for construction of part of the new unnamed road, which will connect existing Pope Road to the project entrance.

An employee at a store received several complaints that a man outside had approached numerous customers in the parking lot and had asked for money. The employee told police she had given the man several warnings and told him to stop harassing customers. She said would like to issue a formal trespass warning. Police told the man that if he returned to the store within the next six months, he would be arrested. The man said he understood and left the parking lot.

OCT. 5. SHELL SHOCKED 11:25 a.m. — 2000 block of 53rd Ave. E. Found Property Not Stolen. A customer returned a box of paintballs to a store. Upon closer inspection, the customer had discovered the box also contained some real ammunition. Police separated the 41 rounds of .380 ammunition from the paintballs. The paintballs were given back to the

41000 block of 24th Terrace E. Criminal Mischief. A woman called police to report someone had damaged the entrance area of her home by driving a vehicle onto the median and ripping up the grass. The woman said that she observed grooves in the grass, possibly from a large truck. She believes that the incident was intentional.

OCT. 7 ALL THAT GLITTERS 12:45 p.m. — 6000 block of Anchor Loop. Fraud. A woman reported that someone had used her personal information to open an account with Kay Jewelers.

OCT. 9. KICKING AND ENTERING 7:45p.m. — 200 block of Cape Harbour Loop. Suspicious Incidents. Police were called to a home where the door had been left open. Upon further inspection, it appeared someone had kicked in the door.

A woman called to report that she saw a tow truck drive through the gate at the entrance of her community — while the gate was closed. When police arrived, they spoke to the driver, who said that the rail began to lower on his truck while he was driving through it. There was no damage to the truck. Police found the rail on the road with its bolts and screws. A property manager was called to check for damage but no one could be reached, however, a case card was left at the front desk of the community golf course.

Police were called when a man came home to find two large garbage bins full of clothes, purses, beauty products and more on his front lawn. She says she used this culture as a way to get involved and become connected with her new community. She was able to find organizations to which she could donate, and she was also able to connect with other likeminded people in the area. At one event, she remembers receiving a gift bag, which contained a $50 donation gift card from the Gulf Coast Community Foundation, and she was impressed with the idea. “Who wouldn’t want to have $50 to give to somebody?” she says. “It’s brilliant.” After browsing the website, she says the foundation opened up an entirely new aspect of philanthropy for her, and she was able to learn about a variety of projects in town that needed funding. “Where I have three or four main organizations I tend to support, Gulf Coast exposes me to things I would never have known about,” she says. “This is another venue for people to look at and think, ‘Wow, I can do this.’” By offering donation opportunities at low costs, Gulf Coast Gives makes philanthropy more accessible for people of varying income levels. changes in the kitchen: Stephane Pierre has been named executive chef. Pierre, a certified chef whose experiences include serving the royal family of Belgium, takes the place of Andrew Thompson. Pierre and Tommy Klauber have worked together in the kitchen, along with members of the staff, to create an innovative and classic menu as well as welcoming and unique atmosphere. On Friday, Oct. 11, the Klaubers opened the Polo Grill’s doors for a menu preview party. Items on the menu included Belgian steamed mussels in white wine presented in a sealed jar, warm goat cheese pillows and a chocolate lava cake. As for what their future holds, Jaymie Klauber says that they can only go forward. “We will continue to be a supporter of the community and provide services to our neighborhoods,” she says.

Prokicker.com ranks Bryan Kirshe, an ODA senior, as the No. 1 punter in the nation. He averages 47.2 yards per punt.

LAKEWOOD RANCH — Bryan Kirshe is in a unique position this season. The Out-of-Door Academy senior co-captain has seen more action on the field through the first six games of the season than the vast majority of his teammates. Kirshe, ODA’s punter and placekicker, already has 29 punts this season. “I enjoy it,” Kirshe says of getting into the game. “The hardest part is when you’re losing so badly and clearly the other team is more powerful. My teammates have blocked well for me so far.” Although ODA has faced its fair share of struggles this season, Kirshe is putting together perhaps his best season on the field. Kirshe is averaging 47.2 yards per punt and recently was named a 2013 pre-

season First Team All-American by the Ray Guy Prokicker.com Kicking, Punting and Long-Snapping Academy. “It’s awesome,” Kirshe says of the honor. “I’ve always had the goal to be the best. He’s a tremendous young man.” A former hockey and soccer player, Timmons first approached Kirshe about punting when he was in the eighth grade. But, it wasn’t until his sophomore year that Kirshe decided to trade in his hockey stick for a football.

Twelve-year-old Kevin Sweeney began playing soccer for the Braden River Soccer Club’s TOPSoccer program last fall. LAKEWOOD RANCH — Twelveyear-old Kevin Sweeney is constantly on the move. He refuses to give up. Even with the sweltering midday heat beating down around him, the Beyond the Spectrum sixth-grader meticulously sizes up

his competition. A lone goal is all that stands between him and victory — or, in this case, chicken fingers and French fries. With his favorite meal on the line, Kevin moves toward the goal. He turns to his older brother, Tom,

a freshman at Pine View School, for reassurance before firing off a shot. As the ball sails into the back of the net, Kevin turns back toward his parents, Monica and Joe, and offers up an infectious smile before quickly reverting back to the

task at hand. It’s the second week of the Braden River Soccer Club’s TOPSoccer season and Kevin is right at home, donning his trademark red shades and his bright-blue soccer jersey. For the next couple of hours, Kevin will join nearly 100 children and buddies on the soccer field for a Sunday afternoon filled with soccer and socializing. “I’m excited when I come to soccer because I like to play it,” says Kevin, who was diagnosed with autism. “Soccer makes me happy. It’s fun and I get to run fast.”

during my time with TOPS has been watching Kevin score goals and then smile from ear to ear as he looks back at my mom,” Tim says. “It is equally enjoyable just to see Kevin being active and exercising, two things that he would not be if it weren’t for TOPS.” Tom agrees. “It’s kind of cool and nice to see my brother play a sport,” Tom says. “I just want him to be able to play soccer and have a good day.” During the season, which runs through Nov. 24, all of the players warm up together before dividing up into their respective age groups. And that’s when the real fun begins. In addition to soccer, the players play a variety of other games, including Duck Duck Goose, enjoy popsicles and other treats and celebrate with a high-five line at the end of the day. Prior to the start of every game, Kevin makes a bet with his parents for lunch. If he scores a certain number of predetermined goals that day, then his parents will take him out to lunch for chicken fingers and French fries at various places, including McDonald’s, Bogey’s and his all-time favorite, Applebee’s. “It was very funny because we made him a bet and he ended up hustling us,” Monica Sweeney says. At the end of the season, all of the players receive a trophy in addition to the jerseys, water bottles and soccer balls they received at the start of the season. “It’s really like having the experience of playing a sport that we had with the other boys,” Monica Sweeney says. “It’s kind of nice. It doesn’t matter your diagnosis because you’re going to be celebrated and successful. The TOPSoccer program is a national program designed to give children with mental or physical disabilities the opportunity to learn and play soccer. Every child within the program is paired up with a buddy, who offers support, guidance and, most importantly, friendship. Kevin began playing soccer last fall after his mother, Monica, a speech pathologist at All Children’s Outpatient Care in Lakewood Ranch, learned about TOPSoccer during an autism resource fair. Having grown up spending countless hours watching his older brothers play baseball, soccer provided a new outlet for Kevin. Kevin was apprehensive at first, but, with his older brother, Tim, now a junior at Pine View School, by his side, Kevin ventured out onto the field. It took a couple of weeks — and a few promises of McDonald’s lunches — for Kevin to warm up to the sport. “The first couple of times were a little tricky,” Monica Sweeney says. “Bribery definitely works. Once you get into it and realize it’s safe, the anxiety goes away. Now it’s ‘I get to go to soccer!’” Kevin received his first trophy, which is on display in the family room, following the fall season. With his trophy in hand, Kevin eagerly asked to sign up for the spring season. On Sept. 29, Kevin began his third season with TOPSoccer. Last season, Kevin shared the field with Tim; but this season, both Tim and Tom have signed up to be a part of the buddy program. “Watching Kevin play a sport has been a really wonderful experience,” Tim says. “This is mostly due to the fact that I never thought that Kevin would be able to participate in any sports, so just being able to watch him play every Sunday is a blessing. “The thing that I have enjoyed most

KIRSHE / PAGE 15A “I think I had him a long time ago,” Timmons says. “He came to my football camp, he and his brother, Sean, and they actually were the two best athletes of the camp. He (eventually) got the football bug, and I’m glad he came out.” It took awhile for Kirshe, a lifelong soccer goalkeeper, to transition between the two sports. But, by the middle of his junior year, Kirshe made the decision to focus his attention solely on football. “Being a goalie kind of makes it worse, because my leg always comes across my body,” Kirshe says. “I had to retrain it to go straight up. “I just enjoy it,” Kirshe says. “I liked it right away, but I didn’t plan to take it so seriously until I (became) the No. 1-ranked punter and received my first letter from a school.” During the transition, Kirshe spent time practicing and competing with his older brother, Sean, who kicked for the Thunder before moving on to Hobart College. The two would start at the 20yard line. Kirshe would punt the ball as far as he could and then Sean Kirshe would kick off. The two brothers would then have to attempt a field goal from wherever the ball landed. “It definitely forced my consistency to come up,” Kirshe says. As a junior, Kirshe was named both a 2012 All-American and a 2012 AllState First Team Selection. He also was named the No. 1-ranked punter in the nation by Prokicker.com, after beating former Manatee punter Jonathan Hernandez, who is in his first year punting at Florida State, in the Ray Guy Prokicker.com National Kicking Championship in December. “I went from not being ranked to No. 1,” Kirshe says. “When I saw that, it hit me that I had a chance to go far.” Prior to the start of his senior season, Kirshe approached Timmons about a bet. The two settled on wings. If Kirshe

averaged 50 yards on punts a game, then Timmons would owe him 25 wings from Buffalo Wild Wings. And if Kirshe failed in his attempt, then he would provide the same for his coach. After Kirshe went double or nothing the second game of the season and owed Timmons 50 wings, he delivered punts of 77 and 63 yards against Booker Sept. 12, to offer some redemption. “It’s kind of hard coming from a small school as opposed to a big school because I’m not surrounded by a group of people who have an interest to do the things that I want to do for football. “It motivates me to keep working and do it without having other kids around me to do it, too,” Kirshe says. With four games remaining on the schedule, Kirshe is focused on bettering his punting average while preparing to play at the next level. “It’s tough day in and day out to get beat,” Timmons says. “This is his senior year. It’s something he’s never going to get back, and to go out like that is tough, so we try to motivate him. We try to play the game within the game and tell him there’s a bigger picture. He has bigger and better things coming down the line.” Kirshe has garnered attention from several Division I colleges, including the University of Miami, Tennessee, Vanderbilt, the University of Southern Mississippi and Georgia Southern. Kirshe recently visited Georgia Southern and plans to visit Southern Mississippi in the coming weeks. Following his official visits, Kirshe will spend the next few months contemplating his future and preparing for National Signing Day Feb. 5, which also happens to be his 18th birthday. “I’m open to anything,” Kirshe says. “I don’t know how it’s all going to play out, but I’m ready. Blair Bloomston, 33, Bradenton Vice President, game on Nation When Blair Bloomston was 12 years old, she had to figure out a way to dive 25 feet underwater and come back to the surface with a handful of sand. The complicated feat is a family rite of passage, part of an annual lobster scuba diving trip in the Florida Keys. Bloomston pulled off the sand trick, eventually, after many failures. Says Bloomston: “It was pure stubbornness.” That kind of tenacity has been an ally in her chosen career, performing. But Bloomston, while she’s acted in plays, isn’t out there for herself or fellow cast mates. Instead, she’s a vice president at game on Nation, a Sarasotabased media training and leadership-development firm. The firm, founded by local entrepreneur Steve Shenbaum in 1997, has a client list made up of national and local sports teams, individual athletes and businesses. Bloomston and Shenbaum meet with clients and put on a variety of interactive games and exercises that promote better communication. “My goal was always to be a performer,” says Bloomston, who has a bachelor’s degree in drama from Marymount Manhattan College, “and at game on I still get to perform, but I have a

much greater impact on others.” Bloomston was born and raised in Bradenton. She moved to New York City for six years to go to college and chase her acting dreams, and she returned to the region in 2003.

That’s because the games are ways to help young children learn and communicate, in addition to grow and mature. Adams’s business, Sarasota-based Pediatric Therapy Solutions Inc., helps parents help their children develop. It’s challenging but rewarding work, says Adams. “I’ve always had a soft spot in my heart for a child with special needs.” A New Jersey native, Adams founded the company in 2002. It now has six employees, including Adams. She basically started the business right after she graduated from the University of Florida. Atlanta native Christian Cotter only moved to Sarasota in early 2012, but he doesn’t miss the cosmopolitan life of a big city. “I absolutely love it here,” says Cotter. “I always wanted to live on the beach.” Cotter also always wanted to work at a growing company that puts a premium on ethics and integrity. He believes he found that at University Park-based First Watch, a breakfast-brunch-lunch chain with more than 100 locations in 15 states. Cotter’s wife, Leah, is from Sarasota, and the couple decided to move here from Atlanta in 2011. Cotter, who then worked

for an IT staffing firm, looked for jobs locally in several industries. He ultimately met with First Watch President and CEO Ken Pendery, and Cotter liked what he heard, and saw. Cotter is now responsible for finding managers for First Watch locations throughout the entire chain.

Owner, Brand Eleven Eleven A trip to New York City in college a decade ago was an epiphany for Melissa Link. Then a student at the Savannah College of Art & Design, Link thought she was going to enter a career in computer animation. But when she met with people doing it and heard about the 12-hour, and sometimes 16hour days, she changed her mind. Now Link owns a branding and marketing firm, Sarasota-based Brand Eleven Eleven. The name, says Link, is based on the synchronicity of 11:11. The workload is still heavy, but Link is happy with her choice. Her animation background, she adds, only bolsters her business when she works with clients, which range from nonprofits to small businesses.

Link says the juggle of running a business day to day is both her biggest challenge and what drives her to keep going. That juggle is only made more complicated by the fact that Link is a single mom with two young, active children. “I love the design and strategy side,” she says, “but I have to make time to do accounting and bill collecting.”

Sean Dotson is a deft combination of optimistic and opportunistic. That’s why he continues to reinvest in his manufacturing company, Sarasotabased RND Automation & Engineering, even with the uncertainty that clouds the economy. Late last year, for instance, RND purchased the majority of the assets of Baytool Inc., a Bradenton-based machine shop that shut down after 20 years in business. RND bought the bulk of Baytool’s machinery, and Dotson hired two of its machinists. An engineer with a specialty in 3-D computer-aided design, Dotson has run his company like that going back to when he started it, in 2005. The firm, with about $3 million in annual sales, designs and assembles custom-made automation and robotic machines used by other manufacturers. Clients include manufacturers of contact lenses, hydraulic valves and automotive sensors. Revenues are up around 30% this year, Dotson says. A Tampa native, Dotson previously worked in engineering and management roles for Venice-based impact resistant window and door manufacturer PGT and Sidel USA, a packaging and convey-

ing company. He went out on his own, he says, to have more freedom and control over a business.

Donna Euston is a Lakewood Ranch resident and member of Tropical Spice on Ice, an adult synchronized ice skating team that has lost three teammates to breast cancer. LAKEWOOD RANCH — At summer’s end every year for the past three years, Donna Euston, a retired flight attendant and Lakewood Ranch snowbird, leaves her Leawood, Kan., base to come here, to the ice rink. She flocks to Florida earlier and earlier every year to join her teammates, a collection of women called Tropical Spice on Ice, an adult synchronized ice-skating team united by loss. Tropical Spice will perform 4 p.m. Oct. 26, at the Ellenton Ice and Sports Complex, in a show to raise money for breast-cancer research. Donations of $5 are suggested. Three of the group’s teammates died from the disease: Janeece Owen, 45, in 1996; Susan Evans, 60, in 2009; and Linda Spinale, 70, in 2012. Another current member, Marilyn Pagni, survived breast cancer. “I don’t know anyone who hasn’t had someone impacted by cancer,” said Euston. For Euston, the show, coinciding with Breast Cancer Awareness Month and benefiting the Sarasota Memorial Hospital Breast Health Center, inspires her to squeeze on bladed shoes two to three times per week, even when her legs are sore. Five years ago, Euston started skating as a way to stay active. She took basic skill lessons from Kelly Paige, Tropical Spice’s coach. She fell a lot, but Paige asked her to join the team. “It was just something to do, “ Euston said. “People up North would say, ‘You are going down to Florida to ice skate? That

Not used to being the center of attention, Euston, nevertheless, began to embrace performances. “I just try to smile a lot to cover my nervousness,” Euston said. With Tropical Spice, Euston has competed in national competitions in Las Vegas and San Francisco. “It will be a fabulous show and it’s an important one,” Euston said. “I hope it gets people excited about skating.”

Two weeks ago, sisters Jill Vedder, Denise Howell and Ashley McCormick and their mom, Amy Syrear, formed Babes Against Brain Cancer, a charity that focuses on helping people with glioblastoma multiforme (GBM). GBM is the most common and deadliest of malignant primary brain tumors in adults. Howell was diagnosed with the cancer in September; only about 500 women under the age of 35 are diagnosed annually. The charity has connected with the Chris Elliot Fund, a West Coast-based GBM patient advocacy group. The women ideally would like to collaborate with the group and bring that idea to the East Coast. “We want to be the ones you come to if you have a brain tumor,” McCormick says. “We want to help them get the right treatment, the right doctors. You need immediate care, and we’re going to know everything.” On Sept. 25, one day after the group posted its first post on the Babes’ Facebook page, the page had received more than 500 followers. “We didn’t think it was going to be such an overnight success,” McCormick says. “A lot of it has been because of Denise … she’s been an open book and so positive.”

Howell lives in Sarasota with her husband, Jeff and 3-year-old son, Ryland. On Oct. 3, she attended a fundraising trunk show benefiting Babes organized by three friends, Liz Noonan, Kim Mangum and Stephanie Logan, at the Miramar Way Clubhouse in Lakewood Ranch. Howell arrived at the event directly after receiving treatment at Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa, which she goes to five days a week. “I have a purpose now,” Howell told the room full of young mothers like herself. The fundraiser raised $2,000 for Babes Against Brain Cancer. The family hopes to organize future charity events, as well, including golf tournaments and cocktail parties.
