East County communities, such as Lakewood Ranch, are exceeding county averages.

Debbie Wagner and Gena Rogers accepted state- and national-award trophies from students from Braden River High School July 5, after the school’s digital video-production team won third place at the Technology Student Association National Conference for a video on the importance of wearing seat belts. The film is about the traffic accident that killed Wagner’s and Rogers’ sons.

LIVING LEGACY

Wearing seat belts may have saved the lives Lakewood Ranch High School students Brett Wagner and Josh Rogers, who died as a result of a Christmas Day crash in 2011. Now, students from their rival school are using the story to continue the boys’ legacy and promote safety. EAST COUNTY — Just west of Rye Road, tucked away on State Road 64 behind a billboard for the Twin Rivers community, Debbie Wagner and Gena Rogers clutch trophies students Braden River High School students earned. The women struggle to hold back tears, as they sit on concrete benches in front of a memorial to their sons — Brett Daniel Wagner and Joshua Jerome Rogers, best friends who died as a result of

a 2011 Christmas Day car accident, which happened just down the road. Josh, who died Dec. 25, was ejected from the truck he was driving, after another vehicle pulled out from a stop sign and into its path. Brett, who was ejected from the vehicle from the back seat, died two days later. They both were 18 years old.

MANATEE COUNTY — Property values in Manatee County are on the rise, with Lakewood Ranch and other East County communities experiencing higher-than-average increases. Preliminary certification of taxable values, released July 1 by the Manatee County Property Appraiser’s Office, shows values have increased an average of 4% compared to last year. Mark Johns, director of appraisal services for the property appraiser’s office, said beach properties, the Lakewood Ranch area and newer subdivisions around the East County community showed the highest increases. Countywide gross taxable value for the 2013 tax roll is $24.14 billion, compared to $23.21 billion in 2012. “Of that $24 billion, there is $364 million worth of new construction countywide,” Johns said. “From last year’s taxable to this year is a 4% increase, but some areas experienced greater increases than others. The beach communities and the Lakewood Ranch area and the newer subdivisions out to the east showed the highest increases, (but) areas like Palmetto and Bradenton proper showed very marginal increases in value.“ The new tax roll indicates new construction is up considerably compared to 2012, and also that the real-estate market is improving, Johns said. Manatee County Administrator Ed Hunzeker said much of the value increase seen in the East County area is directly attributed to new development. County financial planners had anticipated a 3.1% countywide increase in values. The higher values are expected to produce about $1.3 million more in

AMENITY MAKEOVER by Pam Eubanks | Managing Editor

GreyHawk CDD readies for turnover The GreyHawk Landing CDD hopes to open a new pool and amenity center by early August. GREYHAWK LANDING — The keys to GreyHawk Landing’s newest amenity center are changing hands. GreyHawk Landing West developer Sam Rodgers Homes is slated to turn over control of GreyHawk Landing West’s new pool and amenity center to the GreyHawk Landing Community Development District by the end of the week. “That doesn’t mean we will immediately occupy it,” GreyHawk Landing CDD Chairman Ollie Kyte said. “We have to do some things to it — move the field manager in, install furniture (and take care of other items).” The CDD expects to open the new pool and amenity center to residents in late July or early August. “Folks are anxious,” Kyte said. “We have been talking about the new facility in GreyHawk West for months. We thought it may be turned over to us earlier in the year, but, because of bad weather, it kept being pushed back.” The new center will offer residents a kitchen and multi-purpose room, among other features. A new ADA-compliant pool eventually will offer nighttime swimming, but only after appropriate lighting has been installed, said John Phillips, GreyHawk’s field manager. The CDD also plans to add a picnic area in a grassy area behind the pool, he said. “There are a lot of little things (that need to get done before the public can use this amenity),” Phillips said. “I think people are going to have a ball here (once it opens).” Residents of GreyHawk Landing West, which will have about 500 homes once it is built out, and the GreyHawk Landing development both will have access to the new and existing community amenities. The original GreyHawk Landing clubhouse will be converted into a fitnessand-recreation center, after the new amenity center opens. Kyte said the CDD has ordered about $15,000 worth of exercise equipment for the project. Kyte also said the CDD has ordered hardware for a new photo-identification card system for accessing amenities throughout the GreyHawk community, but it has not yet been received. Once the new system is installed, however, the district will begin issuing cards to its residents. The cards will replace the existing tag-based access system. Kyte said the specific process for implementing the new card-access system will be discussed at the district’s July 25 meeting. Contact Pam Eubanks at peubanks@ yourobserver.com.

+ Waterlefe CDD continues landscaping improvements Supervisors on the Waterlefe Community Development District board are pushing forward with longrange landscape-improvement plans. In June, landscapers completed work at the entrance to Waterlefe and along Upper Manatee River Road. CDD Board Chairman Ken Bumbarger said the installation of lighting was delayed because of rain, but it should be finished July 31. The district is setting aside about $100,000 annually for landscape improvements, which are part of a multi-year plan developed through discussions between the CDD and Waterlefe’s Property Owners’ Association. Supervisors met June 25 to discuss improvements and other issues.

At the top of the Lena Road Landfill, 136 feet above sea level, Dan Gray has a view of the East County residents who depend on his department’s services.

Longtime utilities director retires

In 30 years, Dan Gray has helped turn Manatee County Utilities into an interdependent, sustainable force. He just likes to avoid the spotlight.

EAST COUNTY — His work is invisible. For 30 years, Manatee County Utilities Director Dan Gray has been comfortable in hiding. Every morning, from behind the tint of his motorcycle helmet, Gray rides 35 minutes on a Harley-Davidson from his Myakka home to the Manatee County Utilities administration building, a plain workplace in west Bradenton. It’s July 3, and Gray stands at the highest point of Manatee County, atop the Lena Road Landfill, 136 feet above sea level, ready — at the prodding of his colleagues — to talk about his work. Gray’s retirement clock — the one he got as a gag gift that started with 5,000 days — has stopped ticking. A man more bound to his leather appointment book than personal pride, Gray will relinquish his responsibility to provide water to the community he loves, when he retires Friday. Here, on this gravel mountain, Gray can see his wide-ranging customers. He can see the Lake Erie College of Os-

teopathic Medicine’s shiny windows. He can see the Heritage Harbour and Rosedale communities. He can see the Manatee County Chamber of Commerce and landmarks of Sarasota County, Longboat Key, Palmetto and Bradenton. Under Gray’s watch, Manatee County has become the leading water supplier in the region; it treats, distributes and meters water to almost 94,000 retail customers, as well as to nearby communities. “When you stand up here, you see what you do and who you do it for,” Gray said. Under Gray’s leadership for the past 26 years, the Manatee County Utilities Department has accomplished much. For Gray, “the utility,” as he calls the services his department provides, including drinking water, wastewater, reclaimed water, solid waste (garbage) and recycling, constantly evolves and works best when it links together. That’s the thinking behind Manatee Utilities’ latest project, a co-generator

COUNTY PREPS FOR LANDFILL SITE IMPROVEMENTS Manatee County officials must approve changes to the Lena Road Landfill’s general-development plan. EAST COUNTY — Improvements to Manatee County’s Southeast Water Reclamation Facility and Lena Road Landfill, in the East County, soon could be official. Although the county has multiple projects to be designed and constructed within fiscal years 2013 through 2015, improvements are not shown on the site’s general-development plan. Manatee County commissioners are set to vote on the revised generaldevelopment plan Aug. 8. The Manatee County Planning Commission recommended approval, during its June 13 meeting. An important project in the amendment is the addition of a 10 milliongallon tank and high-service pump station associated with the Manatee County Agricultural Reuse System, called MARS. It will allow the county to

service the Schroeder-Manatee Ranch farm operation and to supply reclaimed water to the southeast service area. Jeff Goodwin, wastewater division manager, said the county’s southwest plant already has two 10 million-gallon tanks, but this tank will be the first of its size at the Southeast Water Reclamation Facility location, south of State Road 64 off Lena Road. “There’s no above-ground storage tank at the Lena Road facility; it’s all in the lakes,” Goodwin said. “Ten million gallons sounds like a lot but, really and truly, for a system as large as ours, it’s not. This (new tank) allows us to have better control of the distribution of our reclaimed water. It’s a supplement, too. We are dependent on the lakes. We have hundreds of millions of gallons in these lakes. “Our consultant who developed our

being built at the Lena Road Landfill (see sidebar below). At the most basic level, the co-generator will enable the county to capture and use gas emitted from the landfill to power other utilities. Gray, who graduated from the University of Mississippi with a degree in chemistry, loathes talking about himself. It’s hard for him to communicate outside his world; Gray is the only Manatee County department head without an iPad. However, his enthusiasm emerges when he talks about the science of the utility. “We don’t operate dumps,” Gray said. “We run professionally run facilities with an environmental focus. The utility is very dynamic. It has to breathe and grow. We want the county to sustain its own growth potential.” Gray is proud of another project built on interdependency, the Manatee Agricultural Reuse System (MARS). Activated in 2006 with the construction of a $50 million, 12-mile underground pipeline that connects the county’s wastewater treatment plants, MARS increases the drinking-water supply by providing alternative water sources for irrigation. Gray, who started with the county in the pollution-control department as a lab tech, spearheaded the utilities department’s 13-year-old career-ladder program, an in-house training system that makes it easier for employees to rise through the ranks. The program also serves as a platform to provide a face to a department that does thankless work. “I hate the connotation ‘unskilled laborer,’” Gray said. “These are people who are not visible. We are not like law enforcement or firemen. Those are critical services, but they have a face. We are the silent sentinels.” It’s a job that requires Gray to arrive at work at 5 a.m. And, it’s job within a department that never stops. Someone operates the water treatment plants every hour of the day. “Not only do we have a direct impact on our neighbors, but also our family,” Gray said. “I can’t go home and tell my wife, ‘We can’t drink the water because I didn’t do my job today.’ Wouldn’t you hold that responsibility dear?” Gray indeed holds his job dear. He doesn’t want to turn the water off, so to speak, but he knows the time is near. “It will be weird to turn off the career switch,” Gray said. He will try, first by taking a trip to South Dakota with friends and brothers. “I don’t have a legacy,” Gray said. “I don’t need a plaque. If people remember me, I hope it’s for providing a face to the people — for the people who do the work and to who we do work for.” Contact Josh Siegel at jsiegel@yourobserver.com. reclaimed master plan has recommended two additional tanks over the next several years,” he said. Buildings associated with the landfill also are located on or planned for the site. The plan shows the addition of a customer-service center, scale house office space and storage, a household hazardous-waste storage building and a landfill-operations and storage building, public restrooms and a landfill-cell preparation area. Goodwin said some items seen on the plan are expansions, because the county expects growth in the East County area to pick up again. The planned changes will allow the county to handle the extra flows received from new development. The county also is constructing a gaselectric generator toward the northwest corner of its 1,169-acre site. Once finished, it will allow the county to use gas from the landfill to power the water-reclamation facility, Goodwin said. “That should be done some time in 2014, possibly by the spring,” Goodwin said. “Obviously, we’ll be realizing a tremendous energy saving, and that allows us to keep our rates down for customers.” — Pam Eubanks

The United Way of Manatee County has launched its second year of ReadingPals, a program Barney and Carol Barnett, of the Barnett Early Literacy Initiative, fund. United Way of Manatee County was selected as a recipient of an $85,000 grant that will bring together both state and local organizations. “We so strongly believe the future of our state rests in the hands and minds of our youngest, that we have personally contributed to the launching of ‘ReadingPals’ — an early-literacy initiative in 10 Florida regions,” Carol Barnett says. “Our goal is to ensure that more children are reading at grade level by the end of third grade.” The United Way and its Women’s Leadership Initiative have partnered with the Manatee County School District and the Children’s Movement to bring ReadingPals to

this community for a second year. ReadingPals is a one-on-one, guided reading program for kindergartners housed in four of Manatee County’s Title I elementary schools: Ballard, Blackburn, Daughtrey and Rogers Garden. It will take place from September through May. By September, United Way hopes to enlist 200 community volunteers to participate in the 25-week program, which matches each volunteer with two students per weekly session. Volunteers will dedicate a half-hour to reading with each student. For more information, call 748-1313 or email sholmes@uwmc.net.

Neal Communities celebrates milestone The Lakewood Ranch-based builder planted a tree in the backyard of its 9,000th home last week to commemorate the event. Milestone markers Neal Communities celebrated its 6,000th homeowner in mid2005; its 7,000th homeowner in April 2008; and its 8,000th homeowner in March 2011. Josh Siegel

“We also want our customers to have a happy and good life.” The Woodbrook community, which includes a cottage-home series priced in the mid-to-high $100,000s and low $200,000s, fits nicely into the story of Neal Communities’ approach to the housing crisis. The homes, surrounded by amenities such as playgrounds and a pool with a spa, are geared toward young professionals, families and active adults. In 2009, Neal led a rush to build smaller, cottage-style homes to

accommodate tighter budgets. Neal owned the Woodbrook property for nine years before construction began on it in fall 2011, Storey said. Neal now worries limited supply and pent-up demand could price families out of houses, as builders face labor shortages and increased land costs. In response to the labor shortage and to control growth, Neal caps home sales in Woodbrook’s Celebration series, like the one the Martinez family purchased, to three per month.

Since Woodbrook opened, Neal has sold 132 homes in the community. Construction on new homes will continue for another year. The community will contain 229 homes when it’s completed. Neal hopes the demand for homes continues to grow. He says buyers sitting on cash seek “jewels” again — higher-end homes with more living space. Neal Communities will close on 670 homes this year, he says. Contact Josh Siegel at jsiegel@ yourobserver.com.

They only found out their home represented the 9,000th one Neal has built when a company representative informed them two weeks before the tree was planted. “The tree is something permanent our kids can hold on to,” Dane Martinez said. “We will watch them grow up with it.” Neal Communities CEO Pat Neal said he got the idea to celebrate each thousandth home from fellow homebuilders Paul and Stanley Paver. “The milestone celebrations show we know what we’re doing and we’re good at it,” Neal said.

EAST COUNTY — Neal Communities celebrated its 9,000th milestone by breaking ground — not to build a new home, but to plant a tree. At a ceremony July 3, Neal Communities, a Lakewood Ranchbased homebuilder, planted a tree in the backyard of a home in its Woodbrook community, off Lockwood Ridge Road. The tree was dedicated to Dane and Stephanie Martinez, their daughter, Eva, and a second child due July 9. They live in the home — the 9,000th Neal Communities has completed since it opened in the 1970s. “Every milestone in our organization is important, and this one just shows our commitment to our customers,” said Michael Storey, president of Neal’s building division. “The housing market the last 12 months has been better than the past six years, and the success of this community helps show that we’re clearly in a boom.” The Martinez family closed on its dream home in March. Dane Martinez is a fireman with the Sarasota Fire Department. Stephanie Martinez just completed certification to become a teacher.

County approves expansion of Daoist temple The Shien Deh Temple, which has operated out of a single-family home in the East County for 11 years, learned it can build a new worship center. EAST COUNTY — A Manatee County hearing officer has reversed an earlier decision and approved a special permit allowing an East County Daoist temple to build a worship center on its property. The Shien Deh Temple has been operating out of a 4,000-squarefoot single-family home at 6916 18th Ave. E, east of Morgan Johnson Road, since 2001. The worship center, a two-story facility to be built on a 2.39acre lot, represents an expansion of the temple, which has seen its clientele increase in recent years and has run out of space to accommodate it. In May, hearing officer Jack Hawkins ruled he would deny the permit, saying the proposed use was not compatible with the adjacent residential area. Neighbors agreed and circulated a petition against the temple’s expansion.

The temple’s property, located in a district zoned for suburban agriculture, sits among a quiet residential community of homes with spacious lots and barns. An 18-acre nursery, the Suncoast Nursery, also calls the street home. In August, The Ming Deh Development Society, a nonprofit corporation that operates the temple, applied for the specialuse permit to accommodate a sanctuary and meditation rooms. At that time, the county attorney’s office and zoning staff recommended approval of the project. In April, Hawkins held a public hearing on the issue at which neighbors expressed concerns. After Hawkins denied the special permit the first time, Robert Lincoln, a lawyer representing Shien Deh, filed objections, arguing Hawkins misinterpreted the law in making his decision. Hawkins reopened the public

hearing in June. In his revised ruling, made July 3, Hawkins cites the Manatee County Land Development Code, which says places of worship are considered residentialsupport uses. Hawkins said the worship center is not entirely compatible with the neighborhood but, with conditions, it can be. “Based on the evidence submitted, it appears the neighborhood has been nearly or completely developed into a residential neighborhood with single-family homes,” Hawkins wrote. “Thus, it does not appear the development would necessarily have a negative impact on the development and improvement of surrounding properties.” The maximum capacity of the worship center must be 52 seats, Hawkins wrote. The temple must also provide 17 parking spaces on the property.

Hawkins ordered at least 25 canopy trees be planted on the north end of the property to help shield the view of the worship center from the street. A drainage easement and plans to handle stormwater runoff must also be included in the final site plan, because the property is in a flood zone, Hawkins wrote. For Shien Deh temple-goers, a group of 25 to 30 people who come to learn about Dao, a Chinese concept signifying “the way,” the decision brought peace. “It’s great news,” said Lee Daly, a therapist from Tampa who has attended the temple since 2002. “The concept of Dao starts with respect. The temple is a respectful place, and Dao encourages us to apply that into life. It feeds into relationships. It’s about being tolerant of other virtues. We want to be kind and respectful to our neighbors.” The new worship center will feature enough space for people to kneel on boxes and pray. Inside, temple-goers learn about Dao, a “precursor” to Dao-

ism, a more formal religion that emphasizes living in harmony with “the way.” Shien Deh temple-goers do not practice Daoism in the formal sense. In fact, Christians, Jews, Buddhists and Catholics are all among the regular group of attendees, Daly said. Daly was raised Catholic but prefers not to align herself with one religion. She learned about Dao through a friend. She quickly found it as a concept that encourages people to make positive change, similar to what she tells patients as a therapist. “We don’t encourage participants to leave the religions they already identify with,” Daly said. “Dao is not in conflict with any religions. In fact, we encourage people to go back and study their own religion further. We study to reveal the God within.” Daly said the temple hosts two weekend classes a month and night meetings based on the cycle of the moon. Contact Josh Siegel at jsiegel@ yourobserver.com.

NEWSBRIEFS + Nathan Benderson Park earns state planning award Sarasota County’s Nathan Benderson Park, just south of University Parkway, off Cattlemen Road, has earned more state recognition. The Florida Chapter of the American Planning Association last week named the park, home to a world-class rowing venue and other amenities, winner of the 2013 APA Florida Award of Excellence in the “planning project” category. The APA will present the award during the chapter’s annual state conference Sept. 10 through Sept. 13, in Orlando. During the conference, county planners and others will moderate a panel discussion about the park. Participants will include: Planning and Development Services Director Tom Polk and Senior Planner Beth Rozansky, of Sarasota County government; Tom Walsh, the project’s design architect; community representative John Krotec; and Paul Blackketter, chief operating officer of the SunCoast Aquatic Nature Center, which will manage the facility and a Benderson Development employee. Once fully developed in 2015, Nathan Benderson Park, located at 2500 Honore Ave., will serve as a multi-purpose aquatic venue and will be recognized as a worldwide competitive rowing destination. The park has been hosting rowing regattas since 2009. Sarasota and Manatee counties will learn July 14, if the park will host the 2017 World Rowing Championships. The site is one of two finalists for hosting the event. During the APA National Conference in April, Sarasota County earned the APA’s Hunter Award for Excellence in Economic Development for the design and develop-

Seventeen-year-old Lindsay Wheeler loves science, thanks to a day at the South Florida Museum. Now, she will lead a science- and math-oriented summer camp for girls.

Girl Scout promotes the love of science

East County resident Lindsay Wheeler, 17, will share her love of science, as she hosts a summer camp to earn her Girl Scouts’ Gold Award. EAST COUNTY — The stars aligned for 17-year-old Lindsay Wheeler. The upcoming senior at Lakewood Ranch High School discovered a love of science while visiting the South Florida Museum’s Bishop Planetarium the summer before her junior year. “That got me interested in physics — the physics of light: why stars twinkle and how light bends (to make the different colors in a sunset),” Wheeler said, adding she started volunteering with the museum following that visit. Now, Wheeler, a Girl Scout, hopes to share her love for science with other youths, as she hosts a camp for girls grades six through eight. The camp will focus on the concept of STEM, or Science, Technology, Engineering and Math education. “I want to spark their interest in STEM before they enter high school,” Wheeler said. The camp runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. July 18, at the South Florida Museum, and from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. July 19, at the Boys & Girls Club’s Bradenton location. Camp costs $10, and the registration deadline is July 15. Wheeler is using the summer camp as a way to earn her Girl Scouts’ Gold Award. She came up with the idea to focus on STEM, after seeing research from the Girl Scout Research Institute online. “They had a lot of statistics about how girls are not as confident as boys regarding STEM,” Wheeler said. During Wheeler’s camp, girls not only

LEGACY / FROM PAGE 1 Although both teenagers attended Lakewood Ranch High School, their story is one that resonated with students throughout the community — even rival schools. And, their story is one that will continue to impact lives. Since the boys’ deaths, Debbie Wagner and Gena Rogers have formed Team B.U.B.B.A. (Buckle Up 4 Swag & Bubba Association) to promote driving safety and encourage individuals of all ages to wear seat belts — something that, if done, may have saved their children’s lives. A Braden River High School Technology Student Association digital video-production team took that same message to heart and shared it on a national level June 28 through July 2, while competing in the National TSA Championships, in Orlando. The 12-minute film about Josh and Brett’s lives and deaths — and the importance of wearing seat belts — earned third place in the national competition. At Josh and Brett’s memorial site July 5, Braden River’s digital videoproduction team — Danni Goldman, Mario Palmer and Emily Malcom — gave their TSA national third-place and state first-place trophies to the boys’ mothers. “The theme for the (video competition) was following the rules,” Goldman said. “Watching how hard (this loss was on the families made me want to do this). We wanted to make sure no other mom or family member ever has to feel that loss. “It really hit home,” she said. “It could (have been) your brother or your best friend. It makes you realize how precious life is.” Palmer, the video’s producer, agreed. “It’s something everyone can relate to,” he said. “Everyone rides in a car.” Debbie Wagner and Gena Rogers, who watched the film for the first time over the weekend, already have posted the video to their organization’s website, bubbasaveslives.org. “These are kids who share the same things; this (tragedy) could have happened to any single one of them, and they know it,” Deb-

+ Manatee TSA chapters earn national honors Manatee County technology students showed off their skills and again secured national honors as they competed June 28 through July 2, at the National Technology Student Association Conference, in Orlando. Two East County schools — Braden River High and Nolan Middle — secured national championship titles, both earning the highest number of points within their respective age divisions for the second consecutive year. Overall, Manatee’s 171 student competitors earned 194 top 10 finishes, including five first-place, seven second-place and 11 thirdplace national event titles. Lakewood Ranch High’s Nathan Miller earned one of two high-school level firstplace finishes. In the middle school division, students from Haile’s team earned three top 10 rankings. Braden River also earned two third-place finish. — Pam Eubanks bie Wagner said of how students have rallied behind the cause and to support Josh’s and Brett’s families after the accident. “This isn’t a teenage problem. This is an everybody problem. There are people out there who don’t wear their seat belts.” Two other students from Braden River High also paid tribute to Josh’s and Brett’s lives July 5 by installing a sign in their honor at the memorial site, just before Debbie Wagner and Gena Rogers arrived. “A lot of people at Braden River were affected by (their deaths),” said Taylor Wallace, who constructed the sign with fellow student Wagner Santos. “Everyone knew them. We could put (the sign) here, and (help people) remember them.” Contact Pam Eubanks at peubanks@yourobserver.com.

Scholarship award takes pair to Arizona

Danae McDermott and teacher Kari Reddish will travel to Arizona for the Jostens National Conference, which honors outstanding students and people.

Danae McDermott discovered her love for graphic design with the help of her yearbook adviser at Lakewood Ranch High School. Now, the two will attend a national conference together. LAKEWOOD RANCH — Shy and quiet coming into high school, Danae McDermott needed a voice. She quickly found it through art and design, after joining her high school’s yearbook staff. But, like any first-draft, yearbook page, McDermott’s voice needed polishing and direction. It also needed an advocate — and a friend. After a four-plus-year friendship, McDermott, a 2013 graduate of Lakewood Ranch High School, and Kari Reddish, the Mustangs’ yearbook adviser for the last nine years, will attend the Jostens National Conference July 11 through July 13, in Scottsdale, Ariz. McDermott earned an invitation to the conference, which recognizes academic achievement, community service and positive behavior, after Jostens — known best as a yearbook and class-ring maker — awarded her

its Renaissance Student Scholarship. She will accept the award at the conference this weekend. Jostens gave McDermott a $2,500 scholarship, which can be renewed for up to three more years. She is the only winner in the United States. McDermott invited Reddish — who nominated her for the scholarship in April — to join her on the trip to Arizona. McDermott is enrolled at the University of Central Florida, where she will major in graphic design. True to her take-charge nature, nurtured during a rise from yearbook staff member, to academics editor, creative director and finally to editor-in-chief her senior year, McDermott already is enrolled in summer classes at UCF. “I never imagined winning,” McDermott said of the scholarship. “Mrs. Reddish and I have the same interests and (she) re-

ally helped me find my love for graphic design. It means more to share the honor with her.” Reddish, who will leave Lakewood Ranch for Estero next year, sees the trip as a fitting cap to her end here. “This is the epitome of being a teacher — to have a passion for what you do and to guide someone through the learning process, and to have a student see it through,” Reddish said. McDermott found an interest in graphic design when her mother, Sherri, bought her

daughter a Photoshop book in sixth grade. From fourth to eighth grades, McDermott was home-schooled. During that time, she became comfortable with technology and Photoshop. When McDermott entered Lakewood Ranch High School, she possessed a solid skill set. Reddish picked her to be the first freshman on the yearbook staff, based on a portfolio of her graphic design work. In her four years with the yearbook, McDermott led daily edi-

tor meetings, took senior photos and developed her design niche. McDermott designed pages and crafted covers. Now, she’s building a career. McDermott hopes to one day design for an advertising agency or a magazine. For now, McDermott will fly on a plane alone for the first time July 11, before reading her scholarship-winning essay on stage. Reddish will be waiting for her in Arizona. Escape artist 8:28 p.m. — 3300 block of 53rd Avenue E. Abandoned Autos. A deputy conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle traveling without lights. It was dusk and cloudy. The deputy ran the car’s tag, which showed the registered owner had a warrant out of Manatee County. After learning that information, the deputy turned on his emergency lights and followed the driver. The driver, a black male with short hair who was wearing a blue-and-white plaid long-sleeve shirt, pulled over and parked his car in the parking lot of a restaurant. He told the cop the car was his mother’s. The deputy knew that to be a lie. He called for backup to respond to the scene. The deputy then told the driver to hand over his driver’s license. The driver patted his pants pockets. Feeling uncomfortable, the deputy stepped back. The driver then exited the car and ran westbound. The deputy called to the other responding units — K9s and a chopper — updating the driver’s movements. The deputies lost track of the driver.

When that happens, it tears up the grass. A deputy saw a vehicle stop just off the road. The deputy drove by the vehicle, which then sped off at a fast speed. The vehicle then drove into a stop sign. The deputy stopped the driver. He smelled alcohol on the driver’s breath. He also observed the driver’s vehicle to be covered in mud, as if it had been driven off the road. The deputy cited the driver for running a stop sign.

National CHAMP Fourteen-year-old Emersen Peco won five medals, including the level 5 all-around title, at the 2013 YMCA Gymnastics Championship held June 27 to June 28, in Savannah, Ga.

Thirteen-year-old Palm-Aire resident Sarah Glaser will compete in the Liberty Summer Competition July 16 through July 20, in Philadelphia.

Competitive ELLENTON — Sarah Glaser doesn’t have a care in the world. For six hours a day, the 13-yearold twirls about the ice, as if she’s the only one in the rink. It’s her stage. It’s her happy place. It’s the one place where Sarah feels completely at ease. “I don’t have to worry about anything else,” Sarah says. The St. Stephen’s eighth-grader first stepped onto the ice about three years ago, after attending an open skate with her family. Sarah’s father, Dave, used to play hockey in New York and thought it would be a fun activity for the family to try. After wobbling around for a few minutes, Sarah quickly got the hang of skating. She was hooked. “I remember I was really happy that I didn’t fall,” Sarah says. “I hung on to my dad the whole time.” Shortly after that first open skate, Sarah decided she wanted

Edge to take figure-skating lessons. She saved up her money and paid for her first set of lessons. “I watched a lot of skating before, and I wanted to be able to do jumps and go to the Olympics,” Sarah says. Sarah began training at the Ellenton Ice and Sports Complex with Morgan Boutwell and has only continued to excel; she won the Florida Open two years ago, while skating a level higher than the one for which she had tested. “I was really surprised,” Sarah says. “I didn’t think I skated as well as I could have, and there were a lot of other young girls in my group.” Sarah recently passed her juvenile free-skate test and is in the middle of

BRADENTON — As each remaining gymnast took the floor, East County resident Emersen Peco kept her eyes glued to the scoreboard. The Sarasota Surge level 5 gymnast could only stand back and wait while her competitors completed their final rotations. She had done her part. Emersen had maintained the lead for the majority of the competition, but it was only after the final gymnast took the floor that she realized she had surpassed even her own expectations. Emersen captured the all-around title at the 2013 YMCA Gymnastics National Championships June 27 through June 28, in Savannah, Ga. Emersen scored 36.525 points to finish nearly a full point ahead of Greenwood Family YMCA’s Emily Kibler (35.750). It was Emersen’s first time competing on a national stage. “It felt good, and I was excited because it was the last meet of the season, and I wanted to show my coaches what I had and I did,” says Emersen, who turned 14 years old July 1. Emersen also won individual titles on the vault (9.325) and balance beam (9.500) and finished second on floor exercise (9.125) and fifth on the uneven bars (8.575). “Vault is my best, and I like it because it’s a fast thing,” Emersen says. “Beam is slow and you have to be graceful, but with vault you don’t have to be. On vault I usually get first place, but not on beam, so I was surprised about that.”

preparing for just her second out-ofstate competition. On July 16 through July 20, Sarah will compete in the Liberty Summer Competition, in Philadelphia. Sarah went to watch the competition last year, but this will be the first time she’s attended the event as a competitor. “Sarah is a great performer who gives 100% each time she steps on the ice, and I expect nothing less at this next competition,” Boutwell says. “We are looking forward to seeing Sarah achieve her personal-best score and accomplish more advanced elements than she has done yet in competition.”

Emersen began taking gymnastics when she was 3 years old, after her parents attempted to put her in dance classes. “I didn’t like dance,” Emersen says. “It was too boring.” She began competing when she was about 10 years old and has since competed in more than 25 competitions. “I like the competition part of gymnastics,” Emersen says. “I like how you can be placed for what you do and not just the team.” This summer, Emersen is training four days a week, four hours daily, at the Sarasota YMCA Frank G. Berlin Branch. However, Emersen, who will be a freshman at Southeast High in the fall, is busy training for a new form of competition, as well, after making the Seminoles’ varsity cheerleading squad. Emersen recently began training for the upcoming gymnastics season. But, with her new sport taking up most of her time, Emersen doesn’t know if she’ll compete again with the Sarasota Surge. However, she still plans to attend tumbling and open-gym sessions. “It was a hard decision to make because I grew up there,” Emersen says of gymnastics. “That was my life for 11 years. “(With cheerleading) I still get to compete, so I like that,” Emersen says. “I’m also one of their best tumblers, so I still get to do that. And, I’m going to be a flyer, so I’ll get to try new things.”

Rain drowns out event, but not enthusiasm for it

Volunteers Regina Morris, Pat Miller and Nick Tullio sold beer to raise money for Parent Project Muscular Dystrophy.

Evening thunderstorms lightened the crowd but didn’t keep East County residents from turning out July 5, to Lakewood Ranch Main Street, for the plaza’s monthly Music on Main concert. The event was canceled due to rain, however, shortly after it began. Music-lovers continued to make their way to the plaza and enjoy food and drink and other festivities. The evening’s proceeds benefited Parent Project Muscular Dystrophy.

Thankfully, a new test called Macula Risk has been developed to help doctors identify patients that are at high risk of developing macular degeneration. The Macula Risk test is a simple in-office test. A simple cheek swab is all that is needed. The sample is tested and your eye doctor receives a genetic score card that will help show your risk. In this manner, we can inform patients how often they need to be examined. Dr. Bedinghaus, now performs this test for those at risk. For years, eye doctors did not have much to offer to patients who suffered from macular degeneration. In recent years, new injectable drugs have been developed that not only stop the more severe form of the disease, but in some patients, can actually slightly improve vision. The biggest problem is catching the disease when it becomes active in order for it to be stopped. Often times, patients present to eye doctor’s offices too late and the damage is irreparable. So, do we need see high risk patients in our offices every year, every six
