+ UPS partners with Miracle League The UPS Foundation recently donated $30,000 to The Miracle League of Manasota, a group that gives children and adults with disabilities a chance to play organized baseball. The donation kicks off the Miracle League’s Capital Campaign for Phase II of its field complex at Longwood Park. “We thank the UPS Foundation for its significant contribution to the Miracle League and are thrilled it feels so strongly about our program and our mission,” Miracle League President Bob Mitchell said. The Miracle League’s baseball field, which opened in the spring, has a flat, rubberized surface to create a safe playing environment and features specially designed dugouts. Phase II will include bleachers and sunshades, a concession, accessible restrooms, a pavilion and other amenities. The Miracle League also recently received a $5,000 Quality of Life grant from the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation, which it will use to pay for the bleachers and sunshades.

All the articles were so positive and so excited for me. That was incredible to see. “I was overwhelmed by the amount of support I was getting from my hometown community and international.”

EAST COUNTY — Over the last 27 years, Marla Doss’ name has become synonymous with assisting individuals with special needs. Whether forging new grounds in independent living for disabled adults, raising funds for programs or raising awareness on behalf of the special-needs community, Doss has long been an advocate for disabled children and adults through her work at Community Haven for Adults and Children with Disabilities. She first came to the organization in 1985 as its director of community living and later worked as development director. Her new title, however, makes her the official face and voice of the organization. CHAC’s board of directors named Doss president and CEO July 19. “It’s a huge position,” said Doss, who has served as CEO in an interim capacity since

Lakewood Ranch maintenance staff had to remove nearly $20,000 worth of turf and padding from a playground in Adventure Park and replace it with playground certified mulch. • Lakewood Ranch Operations Manager Ryan Heise informed the boards the community will place Protect Our Ponds signage along Lakewood Ranch Boulevard, Legacy Boulevard and Greenbrook Boulevard in reference to Manatee County’s fertilizer ordinance. Ranch Community Development Districts 2, 4, and 5 agreed to move forward with a 10-or 12-year loan, although the majority of CDD 1 Supervisors favored a 30-year loan. “I just haven’t formulated a hardcore decision,” CDD 1 Supervisor Alan Roth said. “Personally, I would say 30 years because I believe that’s what half of the district would want.” CDD 1 Supervisor Gary Berns agreed. “I believe in paying for what you’re using,” Berns said. “Under that theory, the 30-year (proposal) makes sense to me. Half of the people (probably) won’t be here in 12 years, and I (feel) that’s a gift from me that quite honestly I don’t want to give.” In addition, the board also approved expanding the design of $2.2 million facility by 2,500 square feet to include an extra bay and storage area, additional security features and a covered parking area for maintenance equipment. The additional features will cost the IDA about $200,000. “We feel this will certainly benefit operations and the overall effect of operations,” Town Hall Executive Director Eva Rey said. The most important issue facing the School District is the decline in student achievement. We, as a district, have dropped from the top third to the bottom third, 47th out of 67, due to poor decisions from the School Board. If elected, I will work to restore the power back to the schools, allowing the principals to run their schools and allowing the teachers to do what they do best: teach our children. Block scheduling must be eliminated. Students must see their teachers every day. Seeing a student only twice or three times a week does not give the student any consistency in learning and most can never master the material. Middle school students must be better prepared for high school before being promoted. Reading at grade level would be a great start. Passing both math and English should be a requirement. Are teachers paid adequately? Why or why not? I do not feel that the School Board pays teachers adequately. I also feel that the rest of the staff

What’s the biggest challenge the School Board faces, and what are your solutions? Changing the direction of the school system is our biggest challenge. Our students’ educations and test scores have not improved over the last 10 years, while we have been concentrating ever more power and decisions in the administrations hands. First, we need change in our kindergarten through third grades, to make sure students are ready to learn and ready to succeed. We have to recognize the individuality of every student and that they each have different needs and talents, so we must free our teachers from a restrictive core curriculum that tries to give a “one size fits all” education to each child. We must hold our teachers accountable for what happens in their classroom, but they must have the freedom to decide how their classes proceed, not base everything on a pacing guide developed by a New York consultant. We must change the way we budget money, putting dollars first into the classroom, and last into the boardrooms and consultant contracts. We must begin to track the return on investment we receive for every program and contract we make. Currently, we do very little analysis on our past expenditures. It will take all of this to give us a new direction.

What’s the biggest challenge the School Board faces, and what are your solutions? Providing the highest quality education for the children of Manatee County is our School Board’s biggest challenge. Achieving this involves using all the district’s resources in the most efficient way. The best use of the district’s resources will result from the board members and the public having easily available information about how district funds are spent and intended to be spent. Achieving this also includes voicing objection to state and federal declared policies seeking to take away local control of education and to turn teaching classrooms into testing laboratories. It includes also insisting that employees be treated fairly and receive fair wages and that teachers be treated and paid as professionals. We cannot continue losing quality teachers from the classroom because they no longer can afford to be teachers or they do not want to continue being teachers. We will not progress with employee morale remaining at an all time low.

The county budget: The county needs to control spending. We need to look for opportunities to eliminate waste and duplication of programs, including with regional and state government. The county will need to phase out the reliance on budget stabilization funds to get to a balanced budget. Keep taxes low: Given the continued reduction in tax revenues due to the drop in sales and property values, we need to deal with continued reductions in state and local revenues. We need to grow the economy to increase revenues, and not raise taxes, because that will be a disincentive to attracting retirees and businesses.

By doing this, our communities will be uplifted, bringing values up and also reducing crime and social distress. Third, is keeping a focus on public safety. I am promoting a regional approach to public safety in order to reduce costs, and ensure we have the best programs to deal with these challenging times. By working on a regional approach we will be able to achieve better results, and I am willing to lead this effort. How can Manatee County’s economy be diversified? First, we need to use Port Manatee as a catalyst to spur economic activity. Only a few counties have a deep-water port, and ours is the closest to the Panama Canal. I have worked hard to be creative and, using my business skills, create

The only people paid really well at the School Board are in the management positions. What is your position on the FCAT and accountability testing? Accountability for whom? The school? The county? The state? How can you base the student’s entire school career on one test? Why do parents allow the lawmakers in Tallahassee to pass laws that destroy student achievement when they have no idea what goes on inside our schools today?

Are teachers paid adequately? Why or why not? I believe the cuts of the last year were not necessary and the board/administration could have, and should have, made other choices rather than first cut salaries. I would like the district to live up to the past contract and pay the teachers their due. Teaching has given me the ability to purchase my own home, car and live without debt. I believe the contract I signed paid me a fair rate. So, yes I believe that teachers are paid adequately.

Any other thoughts/comments? The School Board has lost sight of its main purpose — our children. If elected, I will place the students first. Their education is the most important issue that must be addressed. We are testing our students to death, taking valuable instructional time away from the classroom. The most important thing is to keep an open mind on the issues at hand and not prejudge until all the facts are heard.

What immediate steps or actions do you feel are critical to take to improve education in Manatee County? 1) Change policies so to allow teachers to teach; 2) Stop high stakes testing; 3) Make funding the classroom a priority. I am the only candidate for this position endorsed by Tea Party Manatee, the Manatee Education Association and the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, all of whom foremost recognize the benefit to our community in electing the most capable and dedicated candidate to LBK - 2010 - K serve on the Manatee School Board.

What is your position on the FCAT and accountability testing? I believe we must have accountability testing and that the current importance of the FCAT is far out of line with its value as a measurement device. But this is not just about the FCAT, as there are only a few weeks during the year where there is not some sort of standardized assessment being administered. The state and district have overwhelmed our schools and students with massive amounts of assessments without a clear reason. More testing doesn’t mean better, in this case. We must have accountability but in must fit in with a child’s education, not hamper it. And we must do better on how we evaluate our teachers and schools. The current system out of Tallahassee based 40% of my evaluation this year on the performance of 400 children who I have never had in class, while the 150 students that I did teach had no impact on my evaluations. That is a system that is missing the mark. The FCAT or its replacement could, and should, be used as a tool to make sure the schools are doing their job not to punish students and random teachers. What skills and experiences do you feel you bring to the table that your opponent does not? I have spent the last 10 years working with our students in Lakewood Ranch; I know how our system works and how the system can hold our children back. I have experienced how the system misspends our precious tax dollars on consultants, favorite schools or pet political projects, while leaving our students without the tools they need to achieve. My years working in Lakewood Ranch give me a view that is countywide and not just about Northwest Bradenton. And we need a school board member who understands and is going to represent the entire county.

An immediate step that could be taken to improve education would be to just let the teachers teach. We have to teach mastery in our classrooms. The core curriculum flies through the material and most material is not mastered. My other steps, such as ending block scheduling in the high school, in favor of the six-period day and raising the bar in middle school, would be next.

On the student and teaching side, I know what we need to change, while on the business side, I will find a way to get it done. I bring to the table the skills and experience that will enable me to get the job done in the best possible way.

What is your position on the FCAT and accountability testing? FCAT is poison to education. The quality of education in our community and the state of Florida will improve if we stop wasting money on our addiction to testing and, instead, channel our resources into improving education in the classroom. Our focus should not be on bubbling in test answers, but on developing good and educated citizens capable of proceeding to higher education or a worthwhile career.

We recommend “Democracy is the worst form of government except for all those others that have been tried.” — Winston Churchill About this time every two years that famous Churchill quote comes to mind. The TV and radio ads, the direct-mail campaigns, the tilted news reporting, the petty nanny-nanny-boo-boo that goes on among the candidates. It’s enough to make you want to shut it all off — the TV, newspapers, social media. The works. But then you realize the alternatives certainly are much worse. We all could be living under such benevolent dictators as Russia’s Vladimir Putin or mass murderer President Bashar al-Assad of Syria. We’ll take what we have. In that vein, if you haven’t already made your selections for the Aug. 14 primary elections in Manatee County, we’ll offer a few thoughts that might help you decide which bubble to color in at the ballot box or on your absentee, mail-in ballot. As always, it’s worth giving our readers fair warning: Our recommendations almost always tilt toward the candidates who ascribe to the Founding Fathers’ principles of more freedom for the individual and strict limits on government intervention. Those criteria pretty much exclude most candidates these days. So you have to do what life so often requires — settle for less and compromise. In that vein:

Republican Party U.S. Senate — It’s remarkable how many

times Florida’s senior U.S. senator, Democrat Bill Nelson, has been able to avoid running against a powerhouse Republican candidate. In Nelson’s last race in 2006, he whipped, unfortunately, Katherine Harris, winning 60% of the vote. And that for a candidate whom Florida Trend magazine aptly dubbed “the empty suit” when Nelson ran for governor many moons ago, only to drop out of the race when the late Gov. Lawton Chiles decided the Democrats needed a stronger candidate. So here the Republicans are again, this time with Connie Mack IV, son of one of Florida’s all-time great conservatives, his father, Sen. Connie Mack III. Mack IV isn’t his father to be sure. One day he may grow into that stature. But as the saying goes, that apple hasn’t fallen too far from the philosophical tree. We expecially like his proposal to reduce the national debt. And for his eight years in Congress, the Council for Citizens Against Government Waste in Washington, D.C., have given Mack a Lifetime Rating of “Hero” for fiscal conservatism. If Republicans hope to have any chance at all of defeating Nelson, who, by the way, has earned a Lifetime Rating from the Citizens Against Waste of “Hostile” for his spending habits, Mack IV has the best chance. Recommendation: Connie Mack IV

12th Circuit State Attorney — We know there is a brotherhood of sorts when it comes to prosecutors and law-enforcement officers. They’re loyal to each other. And for good reason. They both want to lock up the bad guys. The public defenders, on the other hand, typically aren’t the state attorney’s best friends. This tension is good and part of the system. But in the end, when you talk to many of the players involved in the 12th

Judicial Circuit’s court system, they especially want what we all want — an ethical, fair and tough state attorney, in that order. To that end, based on our discussions with those closely involved in the court system, candidate Ed Brodsky, currently chief assistant state attorney and a state prosecutor for 20 years, is the best candidate to replace retiring State Attorney Earl Moreland. While neither Brodsky nor his Republican opponent Peter Lombardo distinguished himself in a Tiger Bay debate in Sarasota last month, the event was enough to expose key characteristics of the candidates. There’s a reason Brodsky has the support of the region’s top law-enforcement officers. Recommendation: Ed Brodsky

Sheriff — This race doesn’t need discussion. While incumbent Brad Steube isn’t perfect (who is?), his job performance is such that Manatee County residents have a lot of confidence that he is still the right heir to former Sheriff Charlie Wells and has earned another term. Recommendation: W. Brad Steube Supervisor of Elections — There really isn’t anything to debate in this race, either, when you compare qualifications and achievements. We know there is a lot of sentimental support for retired Marine Ed Bailey, and former Manatee County Commissioner Jane von Hahmann has her fan club. But c’mon. They’re Class A baseball rookies compared to Florida Senate President Pro Tempore Mike Bennett. Our brethren in the daily press like to beat up on Sen. Bennett to make him look like a real-estate scofflaw and beholden to special interests. But what they fail to point out is throughout his two terms in the Florida Senate, few senators stood up for the little guy, for veterans and for reducing senseless, job-killing state regulations as did Sen. Bennett. And let’s not forget, before he shifted to public service, Sen. Bennett was a successful businessman, operating one of the largest electrical contracting firms in this region. He knows what it takes to meet a payroll and run a business. Manatee County would be lucky to have him as supervisor of elections. Recommendation: Mike Bennett County Commission, District 5 — This is a tough one. Vanessa Baugh, owner of Vanessa Fine Jewelry in Lakewood Ranch for more than a decade, also knows what it means to make payroll and have the responsibility of a business on her shoulders. But she’s new to the Manatee political scene. Rex Jensen, CEO of Schroeder-Manatee Ranch and her landlord, likes how she has survived through this awful recession and what she stands for. John Colon, a senior vice president of investments at Wells Fargo, has been an active Republican in Manatee for many years, including his current position as an executive committee member. He’s a party man. Sen. Mike Bennett likes his party loyalty and community and GOP involvement. Political outsider versus political insider; newcomer versus connected. — This race is an easy one when measured on the scale of who stands for freedom and free enterprise and who stands for government intervention and control. Betsy Benac stands for the former, incumbent Joe McClash the latter. Don’t listen to the anti-growth screeching that Benac is simply a tool for unbridled growth by virtue of her being employed at Benderson Development. Ask former Manatee Commissioner Pat Glass about Benac. She’ll tell you that in Benac’s 12 years in the county’s planning department, Benac was smart, rational, meticulous and competent. It’s time for Joe to go. Recommendation: Betsy Benac

School Board, District 2 — Robert Moates, a Manatee native, raised and schooled here, is the front-runner and favorite in this race. A history and economics teacher at Lakewood Ranch High School, he has governmental and political experience as a former congressional aide to popular retired Congressman Dan Miller. Moates would make a good school board member, replacing retiring longtime board member Harry Kinnan. But here’s a curveball: The Manatee County School District needs a few more board members like Julie Aranibar to throw out what’s there and start over. Doing the same thing over and over isn’t going to fix Manatee’s low-performing schools. In that vein, no one is more intimate with the inner workings of the school district than long-time school board watchdog, Dave “Watchdog” Miner. Miner tries every election to be given the opportunity to make a difference. If Manatee parents are exasperated with the direction of Manatee’s schools, here’s your chance. Go for it. Recommendation: Dave “Watchdog” Miner School Board District 4 — Everything said above applies to this race, too. Challenger Linda Schaich is a relative newcomer to Manatee politics and the workings of the school district. But she has many of the same characteristics of Miner when it comes to seeking accountability for taxpayers. While incumbent Bob Gause is a safe bet, he seemed to have missed the opportunity in his first term to perform radical surgery on a patient that needs it badly. Recommendation: Linda Schaich

project, called Global Neural Network Cloud Service for Breast Cancer, to hospitals nationwide for beta testing. She also wants to extend its application to other types of cancers and medical diagnostics. Below is a first-hand account Wenger wrote about her experience:

IN HER OWN WORDS The most surreal moment of my life would be the experience of having confetti rain down to celebrate winning the Google Science Fair. Excitement was everywhere! Finalists all were proud to be affiliated with the event, and every project in the finals deserved confetti. For the judges to acknowledge my research as worthy of top prize is awe-inspiring. Winning a $50,000 scholarship, a 10-day National Geographic Excursion to the Galapagos Islands and a Google Zurich research experience is life changing. There were many incredible moments in the jam-packed, four-day whirlwind through Google Headquarters in Mountain View, Calif., as one of this year’s 15 Google Science Fair finalists. During one of my judging discussions, I spoke at length with Vint Cerf, recognized as one of the fathers of the Internet, about cloud computing and how I was applying it to help in the battle against breast cancer. I also interacted with Ada Yonath, a Nobel Prize winner in chemistry for her contributions to discovering the ribosome structure. I established relationships with all 15 judges during the adventure — judges who are the who’s who of science, including Steve Myers, director of accelerators and technology at CERN, where the Higgs Boson discoveries continue, National Geographic Explorers, a top LEGO designer and others from the science community. Every person I interacted with, whether judges, fellow finalists, Google employees or the public, was genuinely interested and excited about my research. My project is Global Neural Network Cloud Service for Breast Cancer. It is an artificial neural network, a program coded to

learn based on mistakes and experiences, so it can detect patterns far too complex for humans to detect. I applied the program to breast-cancer diagnostics, because, currently, fine needle aspirates, the least invasive biopsies, are also the least conclusive. I then deployed my network to the cloud so that it is accessible to doctors worldwide as a convenient tool that can lead to breast-cancer diagnostics becoming quicker, less invasive and cheaper. The network is 99.11% sensitive to malignancy. Through 7.6 million trials, I have proven with more data, the network’s success increases and should achieve hospital-ready success. The Google Science Fair is the largest online science fair in the world and attracted thousands of entries from more than 100 countries. Finalists hailed from Canada, India, Malta, Spain, Swaziland, Ukraine and the U.S. Google paid to fly each of us to the event with a chaperone. I call it an event, because this was so much more than just a science fair; it was an incredible experience. Once there, we had the opportunity to interact in the “crash pad” and form lifelong friendships. The crash pad was stocked with ping-pong, battle bots, video games, bean bags and a claw machine. Not only did we bond in the crash pad, but during our time away from judging, we also got to ride in self-driving cars, explore the Google campus and tour San Francisco. I’m pretty sure we were able to experience more of the city in a day than a typical tourist sees in a week. It was so nice to be able to meet other kids who share my passion for science. Doss is working hard to meet newly identified community needs, as well as to plan for the organization’s financial future, as it prepares for the long-term care of its resident clients and other needs. Specifically, she’s hoping to find a way to “bridge the gap” for teenage children who are dealing with autism spectrum disorders and social integration issues that emerged as a result of being addicted to drugs upon birth. EAST COUNTY — Just thinking about back-to-back 100-mile rides can make even the most veteran cyclist cringe. But Lakewood Ranch resident Tammy Kovar is up for an even bigger challenge. From Aug. 5 to Aug. 11, Kovar, a local arborist, will embark on a 585-mile ride through Oregon to help educate the public about tree care, then raise support for local tree programs during the Tour des Trees. “It has to be done,” the 50-year-old said, adding she likes a challenge. “Who better to do it than me?” The event is a fundraiser for the Tree Research & Education Endowment Fund, an organization committed to supporting sustainable communities and environmental stewardship by funding research, scholarships and education programs pertaining to the fields of arboriculture and urban forestry. Kovar is hoping to raise $5,000 for the cause. “The goal is to raise research dollars to protect urban forests,” said Kovar, owner of Biological Tree Services and Tree Fund liaison for the local chapter of the International Society of Arboriculture. “It supports important causes for Florida, too.” “This whole trip is about education,” she said. “We will be planting trees everywhere we go. It’s an action, volunteer vacation. Giving is good.” Kovar said her love of trees and nature developed as a child, while she was backpacking along the Appalachian Trail with her stepfather. Although in college she aspired to be a stomach surgeon, she took a botany class that re-invigorated her desire to work with the outdoors. “It inspired me to change the world in that area,” Kovar said. “I’m a problem solver, and (now) every day I get a new problem to solve (with nature).” This year’s participation in the Tour des Trees will be Kovar’s second ride for the cause. She rode in 2008 from Indiana to St. Louis. “I hadn’t ever ridden more than 30 miles,” she said, shaking her head and remembering the saddle sores she acquired. Although Kovar loves nature and trees, she knows that the cause is not one that ranks at the top of most individuals’ funding priorities. Lakewood Ranch HIgh boys golf coach Dave Frantz, who coached the Mustangs to their first state championship this past November, will become the first golf-only coach in Manatee County to be inducted into the Florida Athletic Coaches Hall of Fame.

LAKEWOOD RANCH — Dave Frantz always has been influenced by those around him who have been deemed successful. The Lakewood Ranch High boys golf coach grew up following in the footsteps of his older brother, Will, who was recently inducted into the North Florida

PGA Hall of Fame. And when he decided to pursue a teaching and coaching career instead of becoming a PGA professional, he looked to those around him, particularly Southeast High football coach Paul Maechtle and girls basketball coach John Harder, for guidance.

BLANCO The 2012 Summer Olympics opened with a flourish July 27, uniting me with 529 new teammates and marking the start of my very first London adventure. I couldn’t help but swell with pride as my new teammates and I gathered together in Olympic Stadium before dispersing for our various venues. The competition was about to begin. EAST COUNTY — Every time she looks back to last season, Sarah Soscia can’t help but smile uncontrollably. It was a season of firsts for the Cardinal Mooney Catholic High School senior defensive specialist who saw the Lady Cougars beat perennial area volleyball super power Venice for the first

time and capture their first district title since 2004. “It’s so weird to think about it,” Sarah said. “We lost to them every time, but we have so much talent on the team. We were so pumped up. It’s unbelievable to think back and think ‘Did that really happen?’” It also was the first time in her

high school career that Sarah found herself playing alongside her younger sister, Maria, who played in the Lady Cougars back court as a freshman. “Last year as a freshman, they all helped me; but it was nice to have someone to relate to help me,” Maria said. “In the game, I don’t think of her as my sister,

but after practice it’s fun to discuss what happened.” “It’s a little different because I really watch out for her,” Sarah said. “I try and make sure she’s OK.” Poised with natural athletic ability, Sarah and Maria began playing volleyball when they were in fifth and third grade, respectively. The two had tried a variety of sports before eventually settling on volleyball. “We knew we were physically capable of doing it,” Sarah said. “We started to love it, and when we were in middle school we really got into it. The two sisters joined the Suncoast Volleyball Club, where Maria still plays for the National 15 Black team, and quickly developed a passion for the game. “I love the teammate aspect

tacted Frantz and told him he had been selected for induction into the Florida Athletic Coaches Hall of Fame. Frantz will be inducted into the exclusive club Jan. 12 in Daytona Beach, becoming the first golf-only coach from Manatee County to receive the honor. “I was floored,” Frantz said. “It’s a great honor. I must be doing some things right. It’s kind of a validation of something I’ve dreamt about since I started coaching in 1986. “It’s always been in the way back of my mind,” Frantz said. “It’s always been a goal of mine. It’s nice to achieve it while I’m still active.” Frantz didn’t look into the criteria for nomination until his assistant coach approached him about it after Lakewood won the Class 2A state championship in November. Frantz went ahead and filled out the paperwork, but he didn’t expect to get voted in the first time around. “It’s kind of weird to nominate yourself, but he’s like, ‘You deserve this,’” Frantz said. “I wasn’t expecting to get in the first year.” Coaches are awarded points based on their district, regional and state titles, but Frantz’s dedication to high school golf, including having spent 11 years as the FACA state golf chairman, a non-paid volunteer position, is what helped aid his nomination. Frantz grew up playing golf and upon

graduation he thought about becoming a PGA professional. But while working at Palm-Aire Country Club, Frantz met one of the members, who happened to be the director of personnel for the Manatee County School Board. It was at that point that Frantz had a decision to make. He ultimately chose teaching and began coaching in 1986 at Southeast. Since then, Frantz has amassed a 623-200 record en route to capturing seven district titles and three regional titles. He’s made 11 tournament appearances, finishing as the state runner-up twice, once in 1990 at Southeast and again in 2010 at Lakewood Ranch, before leading the Mustangs to their first state championship in 2011. “That’s a lot of teams,” Frantz said. “That’s a lot of days. I’m able to do what I’m able to do because of my wife (Melissa). She gives me the support. Coaches’ wives are tremendous assets.” This fall, the 2011 Coach of the Year will embark on his 28th season at the helm. After having spent most of his career providing all of his players’ instruction, Frantz has changed his focused now toward psychology and course management. Frantz plans to continue coaching until he retires, probably in the next seven years, and, then, turn his attention toward other endeavors, including possibly giving golf lessons or working at a junior golf academy. The girls bond so well. It feels like we’re all sisters. I love the feeling of a good workout and the pain — it brings you closer.” Last season, Sarah and Maria helped power Cardinal Mooney to its first district title since 2004. Throughout the journey, Sarah and Maria relied not only on their skill level, which they admit is just about equal, but their ability to read one another and keep each other in line. “One thing I really struggle with is focus,” Sarah said. “(Maria) teaches me to calm down. She knows when to be seri-

ous. She keeps me in line a little bit even though she’s younger.” “She’s taught me to be happy in any moment and to enjoy everything you have,” Maria said. “She’s always happy, laughing and smiling. We balance each other out well.” The two sisters spent the offseason practicing four days a week; and now as they prepare to embark on their final season together on the court, Sarah and Maria both have their sights set on defending their district title and advancing deep into the postseason while prolonging the inevitable as much as they can. “I want us to go farther than we did last year,” Sarah said. “I want to prolong this season as long as possible because it’s my last year.” Maria agreed. “I don’t want Senior Night to come,” Maria said. “I’m going to cry so much.
