Every manufacturer will at some point or another have to make the move from combustion engined cars to the only other currently viable option, electric. Porsche, following years of development through hybrid technologies have released their first all-electric car and it brings a serious spark to the catalogue.

Pushing Porsche forward into the next phase of the marque's history, Taycan delivered the first allelectric offering for customers on the road. Bringing an understated, sleek design, in line with the car's purity and powertrain, Taycan now boasts a whopping 14 model options across Sports Saloon, Sport Turismo and Cross Turismo variants. The fore-bearers came in the shape of the Taycan Turbo S and Taycan Turbo ensuring the existing client base remained invested in the brand thanks to impressive performance figures sitting alongside those equally engaging aesthetics.

The importance of creating a car that maintains the style, ethos and feel of any existing option cannot be underestimated for a brand like Porsche. Thriving in the combustion engined world as a result of a long, rich history of performance and quality, then having to shift focus and move in to a new generation of all-electric automotive design and engineering is no easy feat, but is one that Porsche appear to have achieved.

Sitting perfectly alongside every other car in the collection, Taycan is undeniably Porsche, from its sporting lines and low stance to the sleek lighting design and accentuated arches. Immediately recognisable yet distinctly different from its fossil fuelled sisters, Taycan has some telltale signs that it's not your 'average' Porsche.

Cooling is one of the biggest giveaways. To run an engine that produces a similar output to the Taycan Turbo's enormous 625PS - or 680 in overboost for launch control - and whopping 850Nm of torque, you would need some serious ventilation to ensure enough air could pass into the necessary places in order to keep it cool. Not here. Two exceptionally efficient electric motors - one on the front axle and one on the rear - provide benefits in both the range and continuous power delivery thanks to the high efficiency of these permanently excited synchronous machines while requiring minimal cooling from external ventilation.

The electric motor, transmission and pulse-controlled inverter are all combined into a compact drive module boasting the highest power density (kW per litre of package space) of all electric powertrains on the market. This is largely thanks to a unique feature of the electric motors, the "hairpin" winding of

the stator coils. Allowing more copper in the stator, this winding design increases output while maintaining the same component volume. Not only improving power to weight benefits, but also saving a considerable amount of space despite delivering an allwheel drive experience.

An innovative transmission has also been developed specifically for Taycan. Providing a two-speed transmission allows the first gear to deliver more acceleration from standing while the second gear with an extended ratio provides further efficiency and additional power reserves - even at high speeds.

The drive is one of smooth, relentless acceleration, only letting up when you've had enough. From standing, Taycan Turbo will take you to 62mph in just 3.2 seconds - with launch control engaged - and continue on to a more than sufficient 161mph. Thanks to the integrated Porsche 4D Chassis Control system which analyses and synchronises all chassis systems in real time, the ride adapts immediately to any given situation and environment. The system includes adaptive air suspension with threechamber technology including Porsche Active Suspension Management, electronic damper control, as well as the Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control Sport, and electromechanical roll stabilisation system including Porsche Torque Vectoring Plus.

What this means in the real world is that you can change the drive settings to suit how you feel like driving on any given day and the car will adapt to perform at its best in any situation in which you put it.

Handling is firm, precise and pointed thanks to that all-wheel drive setup. A low centre of gravity resulting from the battery systems positioning delivers grounded cornering and a planted, secure feel during dynamic driving without the perception of carrying unnecessary weight and with the immediate power delivery, travelling through and out of corners is an all-new, exciting affair.

Of course it would be remiss to not mention efficiency benefits when discussing any electric vehicle and thankfully Taycan Turbo has something to shout about in that department too. The recuperation system is unique in its performance. At up to 265kW, the potential recuperation power is significantly higher than that of its competitors. Testing has shown that approximately 90 percent of everyday braking is actually performed by the electric motors alone without the need for the hydraulic wheel brakes to be activated at all.

Inside, the Porsche quality you have come to expect remains, but in a whole new fashion. Taking the forward-thinking, futuristic ideals of the car as a whole, Taycan's interior space is clean, crisp and stylish without sacrificing on comfort. Tactile digital interfaces adorn every inch of available screen space on the dash, with nothing more than the hazard light button and steering wheel/column switchgear available to quench any physical button thirst. This makes for an incredibly simplistic cabin that allows you to focus on the driving while providing everything you could possibly need at the touch of a screen.

The future of driving is here, for Porsche at least, and it is a bright future indeed. Years of research and development in both road and race cars has allowed Porsche to deliver some of the best electric car technology around and it's only going to get better.
