An icon in the Audi stable since 2002, the RS6 brought power and performance in an unsuspecting package that has largely continued to some extent...until now. No longer a wolf in sheeps clothing, the latest iteration brings the visual emphasis of performance firmly to the fore.

The iconic German sleeper wagon is no more. Gone is the wolf in sheep’s clothing, replaced by the very apparent styling of the latest iteration RS 6 Avant. Audi have never shied away from publicising the impressive performance of their family powerhouse, however, there has never been a more obvious demonstration in its design aesthetic.
Exaggerated arches on all four corners, vast air intakes incorporated into the front spoiler and a rear diffuser built to highlight those enormous dual sport exhausts - with optional RS sport exhaust with black tailpipe trim - combine to create a visual profile closer related to a supercar than family vehicle, yet it remains the bridge between two worlds. Underneath the angular exterior, complete with all the latest Audi lighting technology, you will discover an engineering marvel.
Accommodated under the long bonnet sits a potent 4.0-litre V8 unit packing a whopping 600 PS and boasting a mammoth pulling 800 Nm of torque making for a pushed-back-in-your-seat inducing zero to sixtytwo time of just 3.6 seconds and governed top speed of 155 mph - this can be increased to 174 mph with the optional dynamic package and even further to 189.5 mph with the dynamic plus package. All of that power is put to the tarmac efficiently thanks to the lightning sharp 8-speed tiptronic transmission and a substantial volume of rubber on the standard 21-inch or optional 22-inch wheels.
In order to control all of that power, the German marque have implemented a host of features in the steering, suspension and brake setup. Fitted as standard with progressive steering with a sporty and direct ratio whose newly developed power assistance reports back a direct connection between the driver and the road, the high performance Avant also comes with the high-performance dynamic all-wheel steering option. It combines the dynamic steering at the front axle with the addition of rear-axle steering offering very direct low-speed steering and incredibly stable steering at high speeds.
Pair this with the standard RS adaptive air suspension with controlled damping, tuned specifically for the RS and you can enjoy a top speed of 189.5 mph for the first time. The RS sport suspension plus with Dynamic Ride Control (DRC) option furthers control providing even greater dynamism. It works with steel springs and three-

way adjustable dampers that counteract the movements of the vehicle body with no delay, and without the use of electronics. In the normal driving position in auto, comfort and efficiency modes, the body sits 20 millimeters lower than an Audi A6 Avant with standard suspension - adding to that aggressive look. At speeds of 75 mph and above, the air suspension lowers the RS 6 by another ten millimeters in those three modes. In ‘dynamic’ mode, the body remains at this low ride height permanently for both suspension types. On poor road surfaces, the RS adaptive air suspension also offers a lift that can raise the car 20 millimeters above its normal position at low speeds.
In line with these performance improvements the newly developed RS ceramic brake system with satellite dish sized discs measuring 440 mm at the front and 370 mm at the rear are a welcome option to help slow you down - quickly - just remember they possess different working parameters. Weighing in 34 kg less than its steel counterpart, the system not only improves braking performance, but also reduces the unsprung masses.
Overseeing how these systems work together and putting the control in your hands is the well established Audi drive select. Allowing you to change the character of the RS 6 Avant using the Audi drive select dynamic handling system, the system offers six profiles including comfort, auto, dynamic, efficiency, and the individually configurable RS-specific RS1 and RS2 modes, which can be activated directly using the new “RS Mode” steering wheel button. This automatically opens the RS-specific displays in the Audi virtual cockpit and gives you direct control over influences to the engine and transmission management, the power steering, suspension, dynamic all-wheel steering, quattro sport differential, engine sound and the characteristics of the automatic air conditioning meaning you can create a profile specific to your requirements that will be implemented immediately at the push of the button. The RS2 mode on the other hand exists specifically to influence the Electronic Stabilization Control (ESC) directly, offering the easy toggling of the system through standard, sport mode or completely off.



Inside, the designers have continued the dynamic aesthetic theme, creating a forward-looking and markedly driver-oriented cockpit. The user interface of the fully digital operating system MMI touch response continues to impress with its easy to read 10.1-inch and 8.6-inch displays which harmonizes with the sleek black panel design. The two displays - which are almost invisible when off - with haptic and acoustic feedback are positioned one above the other and can be operated via touch and swiping movements. Special RS displays in the Audi virtual cockpit provide additional trip and vehicle data. You can bring up an overview of drive system component temperatures, maximum g-forces and information regarding tire pressures and temperatures. The lower, display which is positioned on the center console is used for the climate control, comfort and convenience functions as well as text input by handwriting or virtual keyboard.
There are numerous additional features to aid while you're driving inlcuding a shift light display which prompts the driver to upshift when the rev limit is reached and the optional headup display which also displays some RS-specific information, including the shift light display.
RS sport seats with a rhombus pattern and RS embossing in Alcantara/leather combination are fitted as standard or alternatively, perforated Valcona leather with honeycomb pattern and RS embossing is an available option. The RS design packages in red and gray add some colour and a greater level of sportiness to the interior. For example, the steering wheel rim, gear lever gaiter and knee pads are designed in Alcantara with contrasting stitching. Belt straps with colour edging and RS floor mats round out the package. Inlays in gray-brown wood natural or matt aluminum add further customization options.
With all that sport and performance talk, it would be easy to forget this cars functionality. Taking the 'family' aspect even further

than before pushing its everyday usability to new heights is an even roomier interior. The luggage compartment has a capacity of between 565 and 1,680 liters with an increased loading width of 1.05 meters, 14 mm larger than the previous model. By folding down the split-folding rear bench seat in the ratio 40:20:40, the length of the luggage compartment increases to roughly two meters. The luggage compartment lid and the luggage compartment cover are electrically operated as standard, while sensor control via foot gesture and an electrically unlocked, swiveling trailer towing hitch are both available upon request.
Being a family car, you want to make sure that everyone is safe at all times and thankfully, Audi's impressive catalogue of driver assist and safety systems is available. Combining some of the 30 plus driver assist systems in the new RS 6 Avant in the 'city' and 'tour' packages you can enjoy an even more comfortable, efficient and safe drive. Adaptive cruise assist, which adds a lane-tracking function to the adaptive cruise control increasing the level of comfort on long-distance journeys in particular supported by the central driver assistance controller that constitutes the central interface for all assist systems. It continuously computes a model of the surroundings with improved performance compared to the predecessor model, for example, when it detects the end of a traffic jam and initiates braking.
This is a vehicle that truly has it all. Yes, it may have swapped its subtle cloak for a monster mask, but that doesn't change what's underneath. A high performance sports car with the capacity for the whole family and adaptability to be driven both at speed and in comfort - and efficiently thanks to the cylinder on demand system.
