Hello Summer! Summertime in Windsor, Essex County and Chatham/Kent is my favorite time and place to be. When you live in such an amazing area with so much to do, why would you want to leave for a “summer vacation”? From boating to golfing, pickleball and hiking, there are so many amenities packed into our area that you could do a different activity every day and still have only seen a fraction of what the area has to offer. I love our festivals with various food trucks and the different cultural experiences. I love the diverse array of quality restaurants with outdoor patios so that we can enjoy the warmth that summer brings while dining on some of the world’s best food. I am consistently impressed by the number and quality of our parks including baseball diamonds, courts, outdoor pools and vast walking trails. Going to parks like Ojibway or Pelee makes you feel like you are hundreds of miles away, while still in our own backyard. The two cycling and hiking trails along former rail routes are underutilized. The Essex-Amherstburg Greenway stretches 26 km between Essex and Amherstburg and the Chrysler Canada Greenway stretches 50 km from Windsor to Leamington. The two trails intersect in the McGregor portion of Essex. Our waterfront alone is world class with amazing sculptures and priceless views of the Detroit skyline. Those of us who have lived in the area for any length of time sometimes forget just how incredible the view is until you bring a first-time visitor to the waterfront and hear their reaction. As part of the changing landscape at the river, the final steps are underway to connecting the Gordie Howe International Bridge deck between the U.S. and Canadian sides. At the writing of this message, officials for the bridge say there is now only 36 feet between the two sides and it’s expected that they will be connected by the end of June. 13 million hours of construction and over 6 years of planning have brought us to this significant milestone. This is truly an exciting time.
