• Gentry Academy is building a new school and relocating next to the Vadnais Heights Sports Center. • The City Council voted 3 to 2 not to release a 2013 draft forensic audit regarding the Vadnais Sports Center at a meeting June 1. • The name of Punch Neapolitan Pizza’s twin has been announced — Starbucks. The cafe will be located at the inter-

section of Highway 96 and Centerville Road. • When life gives you fi re, make renovations. Kristen Olson, who co-owns the Vadnais Heights Perkins restaurant with Robert Yanish, said Perkins will be renovating most of the restaurant after a kitchen fi re which occurred May 15. • Susan Dahl is a farmer with big

dreams. Dahl had been selling her fruits, eggs and preserves at the other markets, but she wanted a market in her own city where her berry farm is — Vadnais Heights. One opened in June. • This summer’s ice cream social was the last community event sponsored by the Vadnais Heights Rotary Club, which is disbanding after 25 years.

• Staff at White Bear Bar doused a car fi re with an extinguisher and pitchers of water. No one was hurt. • The Loon Chronicles kicks off with a “Happy hatch.” Birchwood photographer Ellen Maas starts her photographic odyssey to chronicle the loon parents and their chick.

• Five varieties of grapes are growing at Seven Vines Winery along Highway 96 in Dellwood under the care of manager Steve Unverzagt. Owned by Ron and Arlie Peltier, the vineyard got its name from Ron who said seven has always been a special number.

WHITE BEAR PRESS • The bonding bill did not pass but money was appropriated through the Clean Water Fund for three augmentation design-build proposals. The DNR will receive $150,000 next year to obtain proposals to address lake level by piping water from Vadnais Lake. • The White Bear Lake School District named four Athletes of the Year. They include hockey defenseman and tennis player Peyton King, basketball captain Alison Hinck, track and cross-country star Fernando Benitez and Dylan Gast, who excelled at track and hockey. King was the Bears’ Athena Award recipient, as well. • Don’s Little Bar closed on Little Goose Lake and new owners, members of the Ski Otters, plan an extensive remodel and opening in July. They are calling the new bar and restaurant Cabin 61. • The Ramsey County Beach remains closed for the eighth straight year. Despite a slight rise in lake level, the county feels it is still unsafe to open the beach. A fi gure provided by the county Parks and Recreation Department show a preferred level of 924.75 feet for the beach to open. The lake is at 921.95 feet. • An intoxicated person was rescued from White Bear Lake after he was heard screaming for help near the Manitou Island bridge. The man was rescued by police officers from a marshy part of the lake.

A loon chick was born on White Bear Lake. • Mariner Gerry Spiess grants a rare interview from his home in Hinckley. The world-class voyager built a tiny sailboat dubbed Yankee Girl in his White Bear Lake garage and sailed her solo across two oceans. Spiess is 75 now and suffers from Parkinson’s disease. He talked about his life, his adventures and the challenges he’s faced.

• A group of local avocational archaeologists aim to unearth artifacts along the shores of Vadnais Lake this summer with a historical society grant.

• Two high school juniors, neighbors Sydney Peterson, a White Bear Lake student, and Isabel Birkeland, a Mahtomedi student, are launching a communitywide Walk for Water to raise money for a well in Uganda July 16. • A massive oak surrendered its spot in rainsoaked soil along Lake Avenue earlier this month and fell to the ground. Thought to be at least two centuries old, this wasn’t just any tree — it was likely a marker tree for the Dakota.

• The Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office has been patrolling the house of Jeronimo Yanez — the officer involved in the fatal shooting of Philando Castile at a traffic stop in Falcon Heights July 6.

• Dog lovers both support and oppose the Seventh Street beach that caters to canines. • Students at Mahtomedi High School formed a student group — SAFE (Students Advocating for Equity) — in response to racist incidents at the high school this year. • Rev. Mike Smith, of White Bear Lake, who dreams of a unified church and city across greater St. Paul, hopes healing can come to his city in the aftermath of the shooting of Philando Castile and violent protests that closed down I-94 in St. Paul Saturday night.

• A young boy fighting for his life against cancer, Owen Meyer, will be the recipient of this year’s Tour De Bar benefit, set for Saturday, Aug. 6. Tour Chairman Mike Shearen said the annual ride raised $12,520 this year, the largest amount ever raised. • When husband Skip bought Marge Johnson an electric bike in April, she called it “the best gift I never wanted.” Now she wouldn’t part with it. And neither would Skip, who bought an e-bike for himself after suffering several strokes last March. • Last year was a record year for mosquitoes. “They just kept coming,” recalled Mike McClean, public affairs coordinator for the Metropolitan Mosquito Control District (MMCD). “We treated more acreage last year with a helicopter than ever before.” And this year? “We’re on the same pace,” he said. • Wednesday night fans of the John Evans/ Dan Perry duo at The Station Pub in White Bear Lake have one last chance to hear their music. The restaurant and event center is under new management.
