ven though we were blessed with a prolonged and warmer than average autumn season this year, it still stings when the first real cold air abruptly arrives on the scene. While marveling at the beauty and adaptability of wild birds on display in the “Wings of Winter” article featured in this issue, we can count our blessings that we're not exposed to the elements. Pileated woodpecker

The pileated woodpecker is Minnesota’s largest woodpecker species and can be found here any time of the year. Standing dead trees are essential to the pileated woodpecker’s survival through the winter. The bird uses its long, sharp bill to drill under the bark and eat hibernating insect larvae. Sometimes woodpeckers will drum loudly on hollow trees or houses to mark their territory or attract a mate.
