Hunger is a year-round issue. The Harvest Drive, which started 30 years ago as a holiday food drive at Country Isles Elementary, now runs four food pantries to serve families in need throughout Broward County. It is calling upon the Weston community to donate because food insecurity is a bigger issue during summer months when children are not in school. Please consider dropping off staple grocery items such as cereal, canned soup, canned tuna/chicken, peanut butter and jelly, and pasta sauce; no glass jars. There are drop-off bins conveniently located outside of City Hall, Fire Station 81, and the Community Center (inside Regional Park).

Weston Is Water Smart

THE WESTON YMCA FAMILY CENTER PLAYED HOST TO THE YMCA of South Florida’s Water Safety Week kick-off event. It’s all part of the Y’s commitment to keeping children and families safe in and around water through various water safety and drowning prevention initiatives. Swim for Jenny is one of these programs. It was started by a South Florida mother to honor her 12-year-old daughter who lost her life because she did not know how to swim and drowned after accidentally slipping into the pool’s deep end during a birthday party.

“If I can share one message, it’s don’t wait. Get your children to swim lessons as early as possible,” said Ana Nguyen, Jenny’s mom. “We don’t want to see another family go through the suffering we experienced since the loss of our daughter, Jenny.”

As part of the Swim for Jenny program, each spring South Florida YMCAs offer five days of free swim lessons to the communities they serve. More than 1,500 participants took part this year.

“We know that children who receive formal swim lessons are less likely to have a drowning incident. That’s why the Y makes providing swim lessons and water safety instruction and education a priority,” said YMCA of South Florida CEO Sheryl Woods. “On average, more than 80 children lose their lives due to drowning each year in Florida alone and, unfortunately, Broward and Miami-Dade counties lead the nation in drowning deaths.”

Speaking at the Swim for Jenny event, Weston Mayor Margaret Brown said, “We are proud to have this premier aquatic center in our community and just as proud to be a part of the Y’s efforts to make kids safer around water.”

The City of Weston strives to ensure this is a water-smart community. It has dedicated an entire page on its website to pool and water safety education (https://www.westonfl. org/government/fire-rescue-andemergency-medical-services/ fire-safety-education/watersmart-weston). It offers water safety tips and a drowning prevention checklist, along with an informative pool safety video produced by Weston BSO Fire Rescue.

Indian Trace Elementary Students Learn Lesson in Kindness

INDIAN TRACE ELEMENTARY School Resource Officer Deputy Julie Bermudez used some out of the box thinking when trying to come up with a way to teach students about the importance of giving back to their community and helping the less fortunate, particularly Broward County’s homeless population. Her idea was to have students donate boxes of cereal, a much-needed food pantry staple item, and then create a chain and knock them down like dominoes.

Deputy Bermudez launched the project last year, calling it Boxes of Kindness, and collected 1,500 boxes of cereal. She wanted to build it bigger this year and decided to hold it in conjunction with Broward County Public School’s A Day of Service and Love, which commemorates the tragedy at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School.

The name was changed to Boxes of Love and the schoolwide event this year was held on Valentine’s Day as the culmination of 17 days of kindness and acts of servitude. The goal was to collect 1,700 boxes of cereal, to honor the 17 lives lost. The Indian Trace family rallied around this cause bringing in a total of 2,053 boxes thanks to additional support from Publix, Broward Sheriff’s Office Weston District, and The Pentecostals of Cooper City.

The PTA and parent volunteers helped Deputy Bermudez carefully line up the cereal boxes along the school’s driveway to create a lengthy chain with several twists and turns. The students then gathered outside. Following a moment of silence in remembrance of the Parkland tragedy, the children

counted down to one. Then they broke out in excited cheers as 3rd grader Gabriel Lavalle, who donated the most with more than 200 boxes, pushed over the first cereal box starting the domino-style chain.

Afterward, Deputy Bermudez, with help from Deputies Lauren Apollo and Danny Lopez who serve with her on the BSO Multi Agency Homeless Taskforce (MAHT), gathered the cereal box donations and delivered them to agencies committed to helping the homeless and struggling families in our greater community: HOPE South Florida, the Salvation Army, Broward Partnership, and the Power of Faith Ministries International.

Deputy Bermudez became familiar with these organizations through her work with MAHT, which she has been a part of since its inception. The program provides officers with training and situational awareness, as well as resources, to service the needs of the homeless in their area.

“The donation from Indian Trace Elementary will make a profound impact,” said SRO Deputy Bermudez. “The average cereal box contains ten or more servings of food. Our project helped provide 20,530 meals to the vulnerable residents of Broward County.”

She hopes that students learned important life lessons by participating in the Boxes of Love project.

“It is super important to teach the youth about getting involved in community service and helping others because they are our future and what they learn now will carry with them throughout their adulthood. Children need to understand they can really make a difference with small acts of kindness,” explained SRO Deputy Bermudez, noting that the project also promoted teamwork, as the class that donated the most boxes of cereal won a pizza party. Congratulations to Mrs. Kozlowski’s third grade class!

Personalized DELIVERING MODERN FOR WOMEN Care

ON THE COVER
12 WESTON COMMUNITY NEWS 05.2023

MODERN OBGYN CARE IS A STATE-OFthe-art obstetric and gynecological practice dedicated to serving women through every stage of life. Doctors Marcela and Miguel Torres provide personalized and compassionate comprehensive women’s health care beginning in adolescence with the initial well-women’s care exam, then throughout the childbearing years with prenatal and postnatal care, and finally postmenopause and beyond, helping patients manage symptoms with therapeutic treatments. The couple, who met during medical school and

are now partners in marriage and medicine, were purposeful when naming their practice: Modern OBGYN Care.

As Marcela Torres, M.D., explains, “Modern reflects our state-of-the-art office equipped with the latest technology and treatment options. OBGYN is our chosen area of expertise. And Care because we treat our patients with respect and love.”

Careful thought was put into designing the office, beginning with the site selection. Modern OBGYN Care is located just minutes away from Memorial Hospital Miramar. Women travel from Weston and throughout West Broward seeking the assurance of a medical practice located in such close proximity to a hospital with a labor and delivery unit and neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). This means the doctors are easily accessible in the event of an emergency.

Technologically Advanced

The office itself evokes a relaxing spa-like atmosphere, yet it is fully equipped with the most advanced technology available.

“For our prenatal patients, we offer ultrasound equipment that not only does 3D but also 4D and 5D,” states Miguel Torres, M.D. “We have a colposcope and a new loop electrosurgical excision procedure (LEEP) machine to diagnose and treat abnormal or cancerous conditions. To complement that, we offer cryotherapy for cervical precancerous lesions. We are also pleased to provide patients with the Votiva FormaV for vaginal rejuvenation and Morpheus 8, a non-surgical treatment for facial rejuvenation and skin tightening.” Both physicians are highly experienced in performing robotic surgery using the daVinci Surgical System, which allows patients undergoing hysterectomy to recover faster with less intraoperative blood loss, smaller incisions, and less postoperative pain. They are also pioneers in a new FDA-approved radiofrequency ablation therapy, which treats fibroids laparoscopically using ultrasound guidance.

Every day is Mother’s Day

While well-versed in the use of state-of-theart medical technology, Dr. Marcela Torres and Dr. Miguel Torres are equally adept when it comes to delivering exceptional patient care. It’s one of the reasons they decided to become OBGYNs.

“This is the best medical specialty because we bring life into the world. Our patients become like family since we are part of this special moment of their life,” shares Dr. Marcela Torres, noting that obstetrics and gynecology are also unique in that doctors get to see patients through various stages of life. “Establishing a long-term relationship with your doctor is important because we not only know you as a patient but also as a human. We are able to consider your past history to better care for your current needs.”

Personalized Care

Dr. Miguel Torres is in total agreement, adding that since OBGYN is also a surgical specialty, the doctors can perform low- and high-risk surgical procedures in the operating room without having to refer the patient.

In addition to delivering babies and performing surgery and other minimally invasive procedures for the treatment of abnormal bleeding, ovarian cysts, or endometriosis, Modern OBGYN Care’s services also include fertility testing, hormone replacement therapy, as well as providing family planning and birth control methods including intrauterine devices and subdermal implants.

Delivering Better Outcomes

Having completed medical school and their residencies together, there is a bit of a friendly rivalry between the two doctors.

“We have a competitive spirit, so each of us strives to be better than the other, in a way pushing for better outcomes for patients, better deliveries, better recoveries from surgical procedures, and overall benefitting patients,” explains Dr. Marcela Torres. “Being spouses helps us improve our office daily. Having that person to discuss a hard case at home, bringing two brains together for better care and understanding of our patients’ problems and treatments.”

Both doctors treat patients with respect and compassion and truly care about their health and well-being. They welcome new patients to experience Modern OBGYN Care and look forward to caring for their complete well-woman needs throughout the various stages of life.

Modern OBGYN Care is located at 12600 Pembroke Road, Suite 302, in Miramar. For more information or to request an appointment call 954-217-4181 or visit www.modernobgyncare.com

RESTORE THAT SHOWROOM SHINE

PROPER CAR MAINTENANCE INVOLVES

more than just oil changes and tire rotations. It should also include routine detailing service to protect your vehicle’s delicate finish from South Florida’s harsh sunlight, pollen, road debris, and other damaging factors. This is exactly why car enthusiasts seek out the services and specialty products offered by Golden Shield Sunrise to maintain their vehicle’s appearance and value. With 40-plus years of combined experience, partners Rohan Cole, Kendall Honore, and Justin Burton treat every vehicle – from Lamborghinis to Kias – with kid gloves.

Weston Community News spoke to Rohan, the general manager, about the importance of car detailing and why Golden Shield Sunrise is the only company clients trust with their precious toys.

Why did you all get into this line of work?

That’s simple – we love cars! Seeing a car in its full glory is art. We are driven not only to restore these prized possessions but also to ensure that they are kept in excellent shape by not compromising any finishes. In our pursuit of this, we have sought out high-caliber training and certifications by the International Detailing Association and Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certifications in paint and body, among others.

What’s the significance of the name Golden Shield?

Our commitment to delivering the “gold standard” of service inspired the name Golden Shield Sunrise. We established our partnership with a mutual

commitment to providing the highest level of customer service with a focus on protecting our clients’ investments. We thought the name Golden Shield would represent that objective well.

What distinguishes Golden Shield Sunrise from other car detailing services?

We are customer focused rather than job focused. What this means is that we evaluate all the needs of the customer before making recommendations. This allows us to ensure that the service provided will not only meet but exceed their expectations.

We are grateful for the trust our customers place in us. That trust is earned by consistently delivering high-quality work and fair prices, while also providing a pleasant interaction from start

to finish with aftercare support long after the transaction is completed.

Why should someone have their car professionally detailed rather than driving through a gas station car wash?

Modern cars have very intricate designs and sensitive materials. The automatic car wash does not take into consideration what contaminants are on the surface before commencing service. It also does not clean between small spaces such as wheels, fender liners, and wheel arches. Lastly, the brushes accumulate debris with every service which is dragged across your vehicle’s surface, sometimes at high speeds, causing scratches and paint deterioration. This could require extensive

polishing to correct at a high cost to the owner.

Speaking of cost, a lot of your customers drive luxury vehicles or high-end sports cars. Why do these vehicles need special care?

High-valued cars require special attention as they will have very expensive parts and paint. Without special attention, these can be damaged or deteriorated and negatively impact the appearance and overall value of the vehicle.

What services and products do you offer to help protect a car’s finish?

Each detail is customized to address all surfaces to restore them and preserve them against premature deterioration. This can be anything from our maintenance wash which removes all loose debris and then we apply protection to the surfaces to a full decontamination to remove embedded particles and machine polishing to remove oxidation and scratches.

Additionally, we carry a wide range of products and will recommend the best one for your vehicle’s needs. For example, waxes and sealants provide good short-term protection from elements. Ceramic coatings provide long-term protection. At the top-of-the-line, paint protection film not only provides long-term environmental protection but also impact protection against rock chips, bird etching, and all other particles that can damage the paint upon contact.

This all sounds very sophisticated. Can you tell us about your shop?

Our facility is over 3,000 square feet, which allows us to do all work and storage inside a secured facility. It is completely climate controlled with a midrise lift to safely raise vehicles to access hard-to-reach areas as well as the undercarriage. We also have an extensive collection of tools to service all makes and models of cars, as well as professional steam cleaners, extractors, and over a dozen different polishers of varied oscillation, to properly address all areas of the vehicle. Golden Shield Sunrise also offers mobile detailing service, which is Kendall’s area of expertise.

How can someone schedule an appointment?

We offer free consultations and inspections along with written quotes at our shop. We also do our best to educate customers on proper care and maintenance of their vehicles regardless of whether we are providing the service or not. Our objective is to have those we interact with be able to enjoy their ownership in the best condition possible.

Golden Shield Sunrise is located at 5527 N. Nob Hill Road in Sunrise. It is open Monday – Friday from 9am to 5pm. To schedule an appointment, call 954-870-0662. For more information visit www.GSProtect.com

Weston Woman Leads Effort to Help Children in Venezuela

ADELINA DIAZ AND HER FAMILY moved to Weston from Caracas, Venezuela, six years ago. One of the things she was immediately struck by was the amount of unwanted clothing, toys, and even food that her neighbors would discard. She started collecting it, sanitizing it, and boxing it up to send to children suffering in her homeland.

Little did Diaz know that her compassion would lead to One Milk for Venezuela, a non-profit organization she founded that is committed to collecting food and medical donations for babies and children living in vulnerable conditions throughout Venezuela. The grassroots organization has grown from a few women in Weston to a network of dedicated volunteers in nine cities around the world.

Diaz made her first shipment in 2018. At the time, she never imagined the impact she was making. To date, One Milk for Venezuela has delivered more than 2,200 boxes filled with infant formula, children’s protein drinks, baby food, diapers and wipes, medicines, staple food items, and personal care products to a team of volunteers located in 22 states in Venezuela who distribute them directly to health professionals and low-income families in Venezuela. These donations have helped more than 100,000 children who were facing malnutrition.

“We often assist cases of abandoned babies,” shared Diaz. “One of them was a newborn baby girl, left by her mother outside the Dr. Osio Hospital in Miranda State. Thanks to the donations of baby formula that we received in Weston, we were able to save the life of this baby. After feeding her for three months she was healthy and,

later, adopted by a beautiful and loving Venezuelan family.”

It’s inspirational stories such as this that motivate Diaz to keep expanding One Milk for Venezuela’s reach. They now collect school supplies and sports equipment to ensure children can obtain a good education and pursue their athletic talents. Weston residents are encouraged to drop off new or gently used sporting goods on May 20th from 11am to 3pm at Intensity X3 Fitness & Kickboxing, located at 16668 Saddle Club Road.

“The Weston community has been very supportive, but not only the Venezuelan people, we receive support and donations every day from the community in general and we are really grateful for that,” said Diaz.

You can support One Milk for Venezuela by donating food, clothing, toys, and other supplies. To arrange pick-up, email onemilkforvenezuela@gmail.com. Diaz says

monetary donations are also needed to help offset shipping costs. These can be made through One Milk for Venezuela’s Go Fund Me page or by Zelle and Venmo.

Please visit www.onemilkforvenezuela.org for more information.

Gator Run Elementary School Celebrates Its Cultural Diversity

GATOR RUN ELEMENTARY STUDENTS, FAMILIES, AND FACULTY came together to celebrate the school’s diversity at the Multicultural Festival. The evening event allowed children to explore the homelands and heritage of their classmates by tasting authentic cuisine, watching traditional dances, listening to native songs, and playing original games.

With a student population representing dozens of countries around the world, the Gator Run Multicultural Festival allows children to take pride in their cultural heritage while also appreciating that of their peers. The PTA created the program as an engaging way for students and families to connect with their community and learn about the world around them.

This year’s program featured 19 different country booths, spanning the globe from Taiwan to Trinidad & Tobago. Students were encouraged to visit the exhibits created by parent volunteers to learn about the country’s history, culture, and traditions and get their “passports” stamped. There were also opportunities to sample traditional foods and participate in cultural activities such as getting their name written in Chinese characters or scoring a soccer goal at the Argentina booth.

“The highlight of the festival is the performance stage, where students and their families perform traditional dances and songs,” said Multicultural Festival Chair Maria Huey, who organized the event along with Showcase Chair Genna Patullo and PTA President Mary Grossman. “The performances are so fun to watch, and the audience enjoys the talents of the kids on stage.”

LIFESAVING LESSONS

Weston is quickly becoming a CPR Safe Community. More than 400 children and adults took part in Community CPR Day 2023, learning this important lifesaving technique. Representatives from BSO Fire Rescue, Cleveland Clinic Florida and Memorial Regional Hospital taught participants how to perform hands-only CPR, how to operate an AED and bleeding control techniques.

MULTICULTURAL CELEBRATION

Weston World Fest showcased the rich cultural diversity of our community. More than 3,000 attendees traveled the world visiting educational country booths created by residents representing their homelands. Children were encouraged to get their “passport” stamped as they circled the globe from Argentina to Ukraine and back to the United States. In keeping with the Animals of the Planet theme, interactive activities included “milking” a cardboard cow in Germany and “fishing” in Russia. On-stage entertainment included a traditional Chinese dragon dance performed by members of the Cypress Bay High School Chinese Club, Irish dancers, Mexican Mariachis, Japanese Taiko drummers, and more. Eventgoers savored the flavors of various nations by purchasing authentic cuisine from area restaurants. Weston World Fest is presented annually by the Arts Council of Greater Weston and the City of Weston.

ROCK ON

The WestonNights Outdoor Concert Series closed out with an incredible performance by the Big Rock Band. Concertgoers enjoyed a wide selection of classic rock tunes and popular hits such as “Dream On” by Aerosmith, “In Your Eyes” by Peter Gabriel, and “I Just Want to Celebrate” by Rare Earth, with an encore of “Purple Rain” by Prince.

A CAPITAL IDEA

The Weston University Program took a field trip to our nation’s capital. The one-day whirlwind tour of Washington DC included a conversation with Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz on the Capitol steps before touring the building and visiting various monuments along the National Mall. Weston U is a seven-month civic education program for high school students offered by the City of Weston.

Vienna Wine Bar SIP & SAVOR

IF YOU’VE NEVER BEEN TO VIENNA WINE BAR YOU DON’T KNOW WHAT YOU’RE missing. Often called West Broward’s best-kept secret, it’s time everyone discovers this hidden gem.

The restaurant, which resembles a quaint cottage from the exterior, has been serving award-winning European style food for almost 25 years. After years of helming the kitchens of some of South Florida’s most famous resort hotels, chef/owner Per Jacobsen and his family decided it was time to put down permanent roots and share his culinary talent with the community.

The menu reflects Jacobsen’s Danish heritage with must-try dishes such as Frikadeller (Danish meatballs), authentic Wiener Schnitzel (breaded cutlet), along with other French and German delicacies such as Escargots Bourguignon (classical Burgundy snails), Beef Stroganoff and Apple Strudel. The fresh seafood and prime steak selections rival that of any steak house.

Chef Courtney Burks adds his special touch with specials featuring only the freshest ingredients. Known to put his unique interpretation on classic recipes, such as Crab Spaetzle, the creations this brilliant young chef comes up with are not to be missed.

Complementing the menu is Vienna Wine Bar’s impressive wine selection, offering more than 150 wines including a renowned Bordeaux collection. Should you discover one you like, you can order a bottle to take home and enjoy. The bartenders deserve praise for their inventive cocktails, showcasing several seasonal creations along with a delicious martini menu.

It is recommended you make reservations to ensure a table at this intimate restaurant. In addition to the main dining room, Vienna Wine Bar offers two private dining spaces and a small outdoor patio which are perfect for special occasions such as baby or bridal showers, graduation celebrations, and even corporate functions.

Vienna Wine Bar is located at 9100 West State Road 84 in Davie. The restaurant is open for lunch and dinner daily as well as brunch on Sunday. To make a reservation call 954-4231961 or go to www.ViennaWineBar.com. The menu and specials are also available online.
