Police beat Chainsaw lifted A NEW chainsaw was stolen from the back of a utility parked at the Balnarring Village car park, FrankstonFlinders Rd, Sunday 21 August. The owner, who had just bought the $170 Wesco chainsaw, partially covered it in the tray when it was stolen, 12.10pm.

Tools stolen TOOLS valued at $750 were stolen from a shed behind a house in Salmon St, Hastings, over the weekend. They included a GMC hammer drill, AEG Jigsaw, Cigweld welder and Sidchrome spanner set. The thieves cut off a padlock to gain entry.

Snacks scoffed DRINKS and snack foods were stolen from the Moorooduc Saddle Club last week. Members at a working bee at the club on Derril Rd discovered the theft over the weekend. Offenders had gouged a hole in the clubhouse wall to gain entry and then cut off a padlock to enter the canteen.

Hot phone A PHONE booth was set alight in Pt Nepean Rd, Rosebud West, Saturday. Rosebud CFA extinguished the fire at midday.

Former racehorse jumps into new career RETIRED racehorse Tarawera enjoyed being put through his paces by triequithon participant Seumas Marwood at Coolart Farm, Tuerong, on Wednesday. The 11-year-old racer was formerly trained by Fran Houlahan and Brian Johnston at Mornington Racecourse until they retired last month. His wins included the Australian and Crisp steeplechases. Now in retirement, Tarawera has transitioned as an equestrian eventer, which combines dressage, cross country and show jumping. His next race is in Racing Victoria’s Off the Track Triequithon, Caulfield, Saturday 27 August. The event aims to “shine a light on life after racing” for older racehorses, and gives aspiring and well-heeled riders the chance to compete for a $15,000 prize pool. Marwood, of Pakenham, regularly brings Tarawera to Coolart Farm to brush up on his jumping skills under the watchful eye of former Olympic show jumper and property owner Jamie Coman. Coman is considered one of the country’s top show jumping coaches who has a long association with Off the Track thoroughbreds.

Wrong date: All shire rates notices mistakenly list 29 February as a deadline day for payment next year.

No extra day at any rate ‘THIRTY days has September/April, June, and November/All the rest have thirty-one/Except February alone/Which has twenty-eight days clear/Twenty-nine in each leap year.’ So goes the rhyme, although there are variants, taught to children to remember how many days are in any specific month in any given year, but it was seemingly forgotten at Mornington Peninsula Shire council which added an extra day to next year’s calendar. Rates notices posted out to peninsula property owners show the third instalment should be paid before a ‘29/02/2017’ deadline. The date 29 February 2017 does not exist as, unlike 2016, it is not a leap year. But puzzled ratepayers should have no fear, the shire wants to make it clear, the cost of late payment will not be dear. “It was an error on the front of the rates notices. The correct date is supplied on the back,” communications and media manager Mark Kestigian confirmed. “They won’t be reissued. Even with the incorrect date, ratepayers won’t be penalised if they don’t pay on the day. “They will at worst get a gentle reminder notice in late March.” Any late payment notices will hopefully be dated 31 March 2017 at the latest, not 32 March.
