Towards an age-friendly peninsula THE “age-friendliness of the Mornington Peninsula was a major topic at the shire’s first Positive Ageing Community Summit held on International Day of Older Persons, Thursday 1 October. That “friendliness relates to transport, housing, social participation, respect, volunteering and employment, communication and information, community and health services, and outdoor spaces and buildings. About 60 attended the summit which brought together residents to reflect on the progress of the shire’s Positive Ageing Strategy 2013 - 2018: A Community for All Ages. A highlight was a comedy act by Evelyn Krape. It aimed to consider new and emerging issues in creating an age-friendly Mornington Peninsula. “It was really inspiring to see so many individual community members, representatives from a variety of groups, services and clubs, as well as council officers come together to look back on progress and to plan for our future, the mayor Cr Bev Colomb said. “The summit will be held annually, with feedback used to assist the council keep the Positive Ageing Strategy a living plan. The PACE group has been closely involved in all stages of the Positive Ageing Strategy and in the community summit.

We can’t stop ageing, but we can age well A HIGH percentage of Frankston and the Mornington Peninsula are significantly older than the state’s average. While living longer has many advantages it can also be the cause of isolation which, in turn, can lead to poor health – mentally and physically.

On Thursday seniors were shown how to keep active and connected at the 10th annual Ageing Well Expo at New Peninsula Baptist Church, Mt Martha. They had access to 100 stalls, saw demonstrations and attended
