BIOLOGY
Edexcel IGCSE 4BI1
Biology is the study of the natural world and all the living things in it, from the largest mammals down to our very own microscopic DNA. It helps you understand how animals and organisms work, how we evolved and the things that make us sick or improve our health. Biologists use this knowledge to do things like try to stop the spread of disease and improve public health, animal care and conservation and work out the true impact of things like pollution. Biology helps you to develop your research and problem-solving skills, organisation and analytical skills. Practical work is an integral part of the course, and you will learn to use a variety of practical equipment to explore the natural world. From enzymes and the movement of molecules to the structure of the heart, lungs and leaves. We investigate everything from the microscopic world of bacteria to the interactions of whole ecosystems. We study the following topics, building on the work in Year 9: • The nature and variety of living organisms • Structures and functions in living organisms • Reproduction and inheritance • Ecology and the environment • Use of biological resources including food production, genetic modification and cloning.
