Sean and Jennifer Stevenson were married in the spring of 2012 at Tranquility Farm in Chester, NJ. Jennifer is riding her 17.2 hand Irish Sport Horse, Azrael. The Stevensonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s chose Tranquility Farm for the site of their wedding because they wanted an outdoor wedding, and the farm provided a number of scenic choices. The ceremony was held in front of an historic farmhouse on the grounds. The cocktail hour was hosted in the stunning entrance foyer and viewing room of the barn/indoor arena. The reception was held in the indoor arena, which was transformed into an elegant setting with carpet and flooring. Holly and evergreen trees sparkling with white Christmas lights surrounded the festivity.Catering was provided by The Brownstone of Paterson, NJ.

ere is a look at her inspirational life and accomplishments.

Like many, Chrystine’s ﬁrst experience with horses was a pony ride at a county fair. Her ﬁrst instruction was in dressage, giving her solid basics in riding. She went on to train with Chuck Grant, known as the ‘father of U.S. Dressage’, and his wife, Emmy. At 14, Chrystine took a trip to Europe with Emmy to Europe and visited the Spanish Riding School in Vienna. Chrystine participated in the USET screening trials and went on to work with Bertalan de Némethy. In 1965 she won the Medal and Maclay Finals as well as the National Horse Show for the Regular Working Hunter Appointments Stake. Chrystine was on the team that won the FEI President’s Cup for winning the most Nations Cups one year. She was not chosen for the 1968 U.S. Olympic team, but that did not slow her down.

Chrystine went on to direct the U.S. Equestrian Team’s training center at Gladstone, N.J. and it’s show jumping competitions. From 1981 to 1989, she was a team manager for two Olympic Games, two Pan Am Games and two Show Jumping Teams. She then became the Executive Director for the American Horse Shows Association.

�� Amazingly, Chrystine found time to teach students while work- �� ing as the Executive Director of the AHSA and the National �� Horse Show. �� When the United States Equestrian Federation was formed in �� 2003, Chrystine served as secretary until becoming president �� in 2013. The Aiken Horse Park and its Foundation are the inspiration of the late, R. Bruce Duchossois, and was brought to life by his family and friends in his memory. Great strides were taken to reflect his vision of preserving Aiken’s unique equestrian tradition while maintaining the character and charm of the Aiken community. The AHP is a picturesque 66-acre equestrian facility in the heart of Aiken, South Carolina, home of the Aiken Steeplechase. Complete with four all weather GGT Footing competition arenas and two schooling rings, 228 permanent stalls and new tent pads with permanent water and electricity, it is the perfect venue for a multitude of equestrian disciplines. The Park is a five-minute drive to the charming shops, restaurants and hotels of historic, downtown Aiken. The AHP is proud to mark its second year by showcasing the Aiken Charity Horse Shows at Bruce’s Field on May 3-7 and May 10-14, 2017. These charity shows are the primary fundraising events for the AHPF, as well as an opportunity for its Board to give back to the community. Charities are chosen by the Board based on criteria set forth by our founder, Bruce. We aim to recognize organizations which show compassion and act on behalf of the welfare of horses, dogs and children locally and within the equestrian community. Riding Aria de los Cielos, barefoot, on the Slate Mountain Range in the 2017 Death Valley Encounter 30 miles LD AERC ride (American Endurance Ride Conference) was a very important part of a life long, experiment I have been conducting, regarding horsemanship and the care of the equine hoof. In working with horses, I continuously evaluate how important is the spontaneous interaction versus training in horsemanship. Spontaneous interaction allows the horse to express himself, and his personality in the relationship with human beings. This is something that naturally happens anyway, and being able to manage it, is always a good strategy. Traditional training just uses the horse’s ability to execute a learned action by a command that we give him, in order to interact with us. The gateways to an individual are its sense organs, and the equine hoof is what horses stand on, and what they touch the ground with, however in modern times many horses are partially or completely isolated from the ground. I think they have learned to compensate with other senses and I want to see the difference it makes when we allow them to feel the ground, versus when we take that away from them, in an effort to protect them from what the equestrian activities would do to them. This noble quest was the original reason for shoeing, also called the “necessary evil”. There is nothing wrong with horseshoes, but there is nothing wrong with barefoot horses, as long as they are comfortable with their status. Aria de Los Cielos is a four-year-old Mangalarga Marchador mare, born on may 1st 2012 at Rancho de Los Cielos in Riverside CA. We won the ride at the Death Valley Encounter and previously placed fifth in her first LD ride, while also showing in schooling dressage shows and earning over 63% of the points in her first four events. Aria has been with me since birth, under saddle only for ten months, and I have managed every aspect of her upbringing, training and competition. Doing so gives me the chance to know as much as possible about this horse, which was not the case with other horses that I worked with before. Riding and training the same horse, barefoot, in different disciplines gave me the chance to appreciate the different situations with Aria as one known, constant element. 52

My experience spans across racing, jumping, dressage, trail and endurance, but my focus is always on horsemanship as a performance tool, through the constant evaluation and management of human and equine behavior. The relationship between human and horse is where the communication that supports the performance happens. In horsemanship, we should give no time to misunderstanding, punishment and conﬂict, whether we are in a perfectly manicured arena or on a treacherous terrain that looks like the moon. The dialogue between human and horse is important, and both parts need to be open to communicating, listening and responding to each other behavior. One experience that was determinant for me in formulating the criteria for Human Horse Sensing was getting lost on the trails, around sunset, while I was training an Arabian stallion named Eli for endurance. I was sure that the stallion knew the way home, given that he had lived in the area for many years. It is a known fact that horses can move in the dark better than we can. Given that sunset was about to happen, I chose to let the stallion be in charge of the direction, but kept control of the speed and made sure that, wherever he went, there was enough space for me in the saddle. I knew that the horse was not going to be able to take care of these two elements, because he did not even have them as a concept, but they were vital to me. He took us home safely, but the path was not a conventional trail, and surprisingly not a straight line either; he manifested a behavior that summed up his experience in being ridden in that area. www.EliteEquestrian.us

Eli took a path I would have never chosen, went through the chaparral, over crevices, boulders and natural obstacles that I would have avoided, but never stumbled, or lost his footing. He tried to go under things low enough that I would have not been able to stay on, but listened when I asked him to go around. The horse never went through the puddles left on the ground from a recent rain. Eli did not know what the footing covered by the water was like, and was not interested in drinking, or getting his feet wet; he was just going home. During that time I carefully observed where he was taking us, and felt many different emotions about the experience. I was very aware, and amazed by watching the ground we were covering. Eli’s ability to master some very difﬁcult passages was very surprising to me. The horse was shod, but still avoided rocks, because he

had no pads, and was travelling, on his “own chosen” path. Getting back to my recent ride with Aria, the Death Valley Encounter has a very long history, and the trail designed for the endurance event goes through many different kinds of terrain, from a flat easy trail in the desert sand, to a foot wide trace across a very rocky slope, with a steep climb. Watching from the saddle how Aria negotiated the terrain barefooted, and followed my lead was heartwarming, given that it was the most challenging trail we have been on. What I chose to manage in my horsemanship was the opposite of what I did in my experience with Eli the stallion. I was just taking care of staying on the path, and letting Aria have the control of the speed. The place we were going through really felt like the moon, and the view was breathtaking. Aria and I were alone most of the time, and the Slate Range trail did not point to base camp, so she had no motivation to speed up or slow down to join another horse, or to go back to camp, which are some of the things that often happen in endurance. The rocky terrain was making her walk slow, and very carefully, since she was barefoot. Being barefoot allows the horse to use the sense of feel in regards to the ground, and affects the horse’s behavior in the horsemanship. The choices people make about their horse’s hooves are based on personal preference, cultural matter, and traditions. Paradoxically, in my experience, I have seen that most horses ridden on a groomed terrain are still traditionally shod, while many endurance riders are exploring the barefoot option, and using hoof boots when riding in extreme situations. I took a special interest in the equine hoof while I was studying Veterinary Medicine in Milano, Italy, and edited and illustrated a book written by Professor Giulio Bassignana about lameness in horses. A large section of the book was dedicated to the problems of the hoof and corrective shoeing. At that time I was training and riding in flat races and loved watching the farriers shoeing. At that time, the idea of a barefoot horse was very far from my mind, but things changed dramatically when I experienced the benefits that can come from the barefoot state in a horse. Watching videos of wild horses climbing up a stonewall in the desert, or of young foals calmly walking across what looked like impossible ground for a horse can open our mind to this possibility, but things can change a lot when there is horsemanship involved, or when an individual is asked to do something by another one. A first hand experience is what really changed my mind about barefoot or shoes as a style of living for horses. I took the shoes off of one of my horses and watched the metamorphosis happen in her, instantly and forever. The way she walked went from a choppy gait to a long and relaxed one. What happened was actually an exception to the rule, given that, most of the time, before they can actually move comfortably barefoot, horses have to go through a transitional period, where the hoof changes its structure in response to the contact with the ground. We were on a grassy pasture, and the horse must have felt like we do when we take a pair of uncomfortable shoes off and put on our slippers to relax. Now, here is another thing to

think about, in terms of barefoot or shod horses! The barefoot horse can always wear a hoof boot as protection, if or when needed, and take it off when not needed, leaving the hoof free, and relaxing all of the other anatomical parts of the limbs. As already stated, horsemanship has its role in every moment spent with horses, and this includes the care of the hoof. This very important task requires daily attentions, whether the horse is shod or barefoot, because is a determinant factor to the wellbeing of the horse. I have seen behavioral problems arise during hoof care, and not being properly resolved, even when professional farriers or trimmers work with horses. I have even observed horses being sedated, to undergo shoeing or trimming, and believe www.EliteEquestrian.us

The ideal life conditions for a horse can vary a lot depending on where he is, but naturally involve many factors, like climate, ground, nutrition, social interaction (including horse to horse and human to horse relationships), and level of physical activity. This article will not go in detail about these matters that I usually cover in a horsemanship program. In order to best keep our horses we need to make a comprehensive evaluation of our own reality, and create any condition that can make it easier for the horse to live with us. I strongly suggest people to get informed, even if they delegate the care of their horse to professionals. No foot, no horse, no fun! It is stating the obvious, but it is very surprising to see how many people still do not take proper care of their horse’s hooves. Hooves are a very active part of the anatomy of the horse. Equine hooves grow continuously, allowing the horse to wear them out while moving; they help in the blood circulation; they function as shock absorbers for a horse’s limbs and do even more. It would take a long time to mention all the components of the barefoot hoof philosophy, and lot of literature is available on the subject, but one thing I have not seen very much practiced in hoof care, with or without shoes, is a good hygiene of the hoof. It is a practice that can make a real difference in the quality of life of any horse. The hygiene of the hoof is paramount, but in the sense of frequency rather than the 53

depth to which we take it. Most often, the place where our horses live is very limited in space, and far from what would be natural. The space where the horse can step without incurring in manure or wet bedding is mostly inexistent, even when the stall gets cleaned multiple times a day. In the domestic horse environment, water is not available for the horse to step into it; manure mixed with soil sets in the frog and promotes the growth of microorganisms that cause disease in the hoof. If we disrupt the accumulation of material with frequent cleaning we do not allow enough time for the pathogenic process to happen. If we simply use a hoof pick to remove what is packed under the hoof, and use a hose to wash the hoof wall and its bottom surface we can achieve a sufficiently thorough cleaning, and maintain the physiological level of hydration of the hoof tissues. Daily attention for their hooves can also be the proper way to train horses to lift their limbs and even consciously hold them up for us. This behavior definitely helps the work of the professional farriers and trimmers, who definitely would appreciate the horse’s cooperation, because they work with him on a regular, but much less frequent basis. In my opinion, horsemanship plays a determinant role in any moment between human and horse. Being able to understand in depth, and to manage in detail the human to horse relationship, can make it go from a fearful experience to one that we would always want to have, and this is true for both equine and human.

For those of you who may have missed the press release on this through the American Horse Publications, here is the information regarding this scholarship. “Created and managed by Schleese Saddlery Ltd., the Devin Grace Scholarship Fund (DGSF) is devoted to helping young riders get the most out of their equine experience through expert saddle fitting and performance. As such, the Devin Grace Scholarship Fund makes quality Schleese saddles available to deserving children whose families may not be able to afford the quality and craftsmanship of a proper fitting saddle. Devin Grace Franktze was a young rider of 14 years old and a dear member of the Schleese extended family when she lost her life suddenly in a tragic car accident. The fund is set up in memory of her caring spirit, work ethic and passion for western riding in the Arizona desert on her beloved horse, Lady Bug. Devin cared deeply about the health of her horse and understood the importance of proper saddle fit. The DGSF’s mission is to help others experience the joy and satisfaction that she felt while riding the trails. These values are shared by our Schleese and Saddlefit4Life® teams who regularly meet deserving, hardworking youngsters in barns all over North America who understand the importance of proper saddle fit but for whom circumstances make a quality saddle unaffordable. Our field teams will identify potential candidates and encourage them to complete an application that will include a personal essay on what the child feels makes them deserving of one of the fund’s saddles, provide an endorsement from their teacher/coach/trainer/ mentor and a letter of applications from their parent(s). Each Devin Grace Scholarship Fund saddle will be stamped, “On loan to this deserving rider” as recognition of the child’s achievement. What should I look for when

purchasing a used saddle

Generally used saddles are on the market for a number of reasons, some of which could be:

• they no longer or never ﬁt either horse or rider and are non-adjustable (which unfortunately is the case with many English saddles that have been built on a traditional English spring tree with a traditional English gullet plate); • Or they have been put aside for the next latest greatest fad or model; • Or the rider no longer rides or has changed disciplines. In any case, with a used saddle, it is usually a case of caveat emptor, especially if buying privately. If you purchase a used saddle from a reputable dealer, generally it will have been tested for soundness (i.e., tree is not

broken or twisted), the billets are stitched on properly and the threads are not fraying, and the leather is not ripped or torn or wrinkled and has been conditioned regularly. These are all cosmetic points; key is whether or not the saddle fits the rider (and is gender appropriate!) and whether or not it will fit the horse or can be adjusted to fit the horse. In this consideration, the saddle support area is crucial, since the length of the saddle is one thing that can never be adjusted after the fact unless the panel is changed. The saddle needs to lie behind the shoulder blade and no further than the 18th thoracic vertebra – which is simple to determine by feeling where the last floating rib ends. The saddle must never lie on the lumbar vertebrae, as this is where several reflex points will result in negative behaviour such as bucking or stumbling. Used saddles from renowned manufacturers will generally keep their value; determine whether the saddle is right for you and your horse and make sure you have it fitted properly before riding.

It probably comes as no surprise that a

good walk is important in a trail horse.

However, a horse with a comfortable, ground-covering walk is one that will be appreciated by real working cowboys, dressage riders, endurance and competitive trail riders, as well as weekend trail riders. That is because the walk is one of the hardest gaits to improve in a horse, and yet it is the gait most commonly used by most riders outside of speed events.

about your trailer tires

When a trailer tire blows, it happens without warning. The result can range from being an inconvenience to being devastating. Though a blown tire cannot be completely preventable, the following will reduce the odds considerably.

��

FACT 1. The right tires. Trailer tires have a heavier construction than automobile and truck tires because they have a diﬀerent purpose. Radial tires are preferred because they have less heat buildup, get be�er gas mileage, longer wear, and provide a so�er ride. A trailer tire code will contain an “ST” (special trailer) and an “R” (radial). Example: ST22575R15. Tires have weight ratings so without overdoing or underdoing the weight, purchase the tires that will best match the GVWR (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating) of the trailer. The GVWR is the weight manufacturers state that a trailer can weigh fully loaded and still be safe. The GVWR is stated on a sticker on the trailer. Not all trailer tires with the same ratings and specs are the same quality so doing research will determine which are be�er than others. Currently, there are no trailer tires being manufactured in the United States.

FACT 2. A level trailer. Each tire has a weight rating that speciﬁes the amount of weight the tire can sustain safely. A trailer must sit level so that the combined weight rating of all four tires (and both axles) supports the total weight of the trailer. An unlevel trailer will shi� more weight onto to one of the axles and two of the tires, causing those tires to overloaded tires, heat up and blow. A common mistake is to assume that larger, higher rated tires will create a greater margin of safety but if the combined tire rating of all four tires greatly exceeds the Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) of the trailer, the horses will have a pre�y uncomfortable ride.

FACT 7. Checking for uneven wear. Inspect and feel the tires for unusual wear. What causes a tire to wear unevenly is a bent axle, under inﬂated tires, or a faulty tire.

FACT 3. Correct air pressure. The tire manufacturer determines the maximum air pressure the tire can hold safely, which is called “psi” (pounds per square inch) and is stated on the tire. The tire pressure should be filled and kept at maximum so that they flex less and therefore run cooler reducing the chance of a blowout. A correctly inflated tire will also increase gas mileage and increase the life of the tire.

FACT 5. Knowing the speed limit. Trailer tires have speed limits. Exceeding the tire’s speed limit can cause a tire to overheat, which may cause it to unravel. This information can be found in the tire manufacturer’s brochure or manual. Or simply ask your local tire salesman. FACT 6. Maintenance of stem caps. Though many believe that the tire’s stem cap keeps the air from leaking out, it is only partially correct. The tire stem’s primary purpose is to keep the dirt and grit from damaging the spring mechanism in the stem, which could then allow the air to leak.

FACT 8. Check air pressure. Air pressure should be checked before leaving the barn and before coming back. A tire is more apt to pick up something destructive on the road than from si�ing at the barn. Rubber torsion (independent) suspension, which most all trailer now have, gives horses a smoother ride and allows the trailer to track on three wheels (tires) if one goes ﬂat. But the independent suspension also makes it near impossible to determine if a tire is ﬂat by looking at it because the other tires are holding the trailer level. If a tire gauge is not available, at least check by pushing in on the sidewall with your foot.

FACT 4. Knowing tire age. The general consensus is that tires lose their integrity and deteriorate to a point of being unsafe after six years whether used a lot, or not at all. Though tires do not have expiration dates they do have build dates stated in a code on the tire indicating the week and year it was made. Always ask the tire salesman for the build date, or check it yourself, before buying tires. Trailer tires are sold a lot less frequently than auto62

While each rider has their own preference, chances are at some point you have wrapped for a trailer ride, polo wrapped for a training ride and applied standing bandages after a strenuous ride or horse show. Horse snacks and treats have come a long way since I was a child. The gold standard used to be an apple or a carrot. Now there is a full aisle of different bagged treats of every conceivable ﬂavor, shape, color and size.

Some have fruit, others are sugarless, some with simple oats and corn, and others with a list of chemical names that would stun a chemist. When holidays arrive, the aisle nearly doubles in size with the snacks made into party favors, wreathes, stockings and even Easter baskets. Yes, we’ve come a long way, baby. In North America alone, there are over 60 manufacturing companies that make commercially available horse treats. In addition to the large manufactures, there are numerous smaller “kitchen treats” that are available locally as well as horse treat cookbooks. Add a cute name to the treat and the economic impact mushrooms. Face it, we all buy treats for our horses at some time or another. A little information can make your decisions easier as to which kind to buy so that it is at least something healthy for our equine partners.

Ingredients

Most ingredients in treats are similar to that of an equine feed. This includes oats, corn, barley, beet pulp, wheat, brans, rice ﬂour, alfalfa, apples, carrots, raisins, molasses, brown sugar, peppermint, cinnamon and a smattering of vitamins and minerals. Some even contain special herbs. Most treats have a lot of sugar content (whether directly or indirectly) and therefore should be kept to a “treat” and not as a mainstay of diet. See Table 1 for a listing of safe fruits and vegetables that are safe for your horse to eat as a treat.

Freshness

Some commercially prepared treats do not contain preservatives while others do. Be sure to check the expiration date or use by date carefully. Those that do not contain any date should be used with caution. Preservatives (e.g. BHA or BHT) can make an extended shelf life and in reality, safer overall for your horse. Any treat package that claims there is no need for an expiration date should be viewed with caution.

Taste/Palatability

The packaging of the treats not only protects the treats from damage but also attracts us as humans to make the purchase. It’s the taste; however, that makes the difference to the horse. Oddly enough, horses like humans have preferences for different foods, shapes and even texture. Some like chewy treats while others like crunchy. Some like round shapes (to move freer in the mouth) while others like the enjoyment of odd shapes against their 66

tongues. Some like those treats that have grooves in them so that they can be broken easier (and consumed quicker) while others enjoy the “slow melt in your mouth“ approach. If apples and carrots are used, always cut them up. Apples should be sliced and not chunked as the chucks could potentially cause choke when swallowed whole. Carrots should also be cut in small 3-4 inch pieces. One piece at a time allows for better chewing instead of handing a bagful all at once to be “inhaled” instead of properly chewed.

Other Cautions

Most treats are high in pure sugar content. Like in the human, excessive sugar intake can result in various physical ailments as well as obesity. If your horse is metabolically challenged (e.g. IR), check with your vet as to the proper treat. There have been cases reported that excessive sugar intake has resulted in founder. Sugar is OK in small doses, but we as caretakers, must limit their intake amounts. Another caution in selecting the treat is to check the ingredients carefully so as not to trigger a positive drug test result if competing. Certain herbs and other ingredients can trigger a positive result. To add to the confusion, the actual drug test is constantly changing so be sure to understand the ingredients you need to stay away from and how long after consumption are they detectable.

Summary

Most treats are fine to give as positive reinforcement, end of ride or just ……..because. Limit the amounts, review the tastes, consider where the treats are going to be before being given (do they need refrigeration or special handling), and finally, the costs to you. Your horse will appreciate the occasional treat and you will have the enjoyment of giving them too. Remember, they are NOT meant to be a meal for your horse, only a treat for special occasions. I’ve not heard of a Treat-a-holic Anonymous for horses, but I definitely know a couple of horses that could be founding members! ��
