e always said that nothing would be decided in the first leg on Saturday night and that is exactly where we are. Both teams will come in to this tie this evening looking to progress, the tie is finely balanced and it is all to play for this evening. The first leg was a close, hard fought affair that swung one way and then another and that is what we are expecting again tonight. Your support in what will be a very tough match will be hugely appreciated. We took a big following to Mansfield on Saturday and you made yourselves heard all evening. Thank you for that support, we need all of that and more coming from three sides of Sixfields this evening! Your support has been hugely influential all season, Having had to play a season behind closed doors last season really highlighted the impact your support has, and the superb backing we have received not just at Sixfields but up and down the country over the last ten months has been a vital part of our season. We

need that support tonight as much as ever and I know you will be us every step of the way. Together, we have much to be proud about this season. To ﬁnish with 80 points, just four points oﬀ the top of the table, to have won 23 league games and to have formed such a strong connection between players, the club and the supporters makes us all very proud. When we held a Fans Forum with the It’s All Cobblers To Me podcast at the start of the season, the one thing we promised was a team that gave everything and would hopefully make the supporters proud. I think we have achieved that and we have been lucky to have some fantastic support this season, both home and away. Thank you all for that support. Congratulations to the Northampton Town Women who have achieved promotion and a league title win. It has been a fantastic season for the side and continues their progress from recent seasons. All of us at the club are very proud of the progress the female football programme continues

am sure we are in for a dramatic, tense and exciting evening full of twists and turns and I hope you all enjoy the game. Saturday’s first leg had all of that and more. Ali Koiki’s goal capped off a very strong second half performance and we come in to tonight’s second leg with everything all to play for. The tie is set up nicely with a full house in here at Sixfields and a watching TV audience on Sky Sports. Whatever happens in this play off second leg, we can be proud of all that we have achieved this season. To think that just over 12 months ago we were playing behind closed doors in empty stadiums and now we are playing at Sixfields in front of big crowds with such a strong connection between the club and the supporters shows how much progress we have made this season, and Jon, the staff and the players deserve every credit. A year ago following a thorough and detailed review we made the decision to do things a little differently. We appointed a new management team, invested in improved training facilities and approached our recruitment in a slightly different way. We did this to bring medium and long term progress, but we needed to also be successful in the short term because we are in a results business. We continue to evolve, but I think the evidence shows our plans are working and we can all be excited about what the future holds.

We have enjoyed an excellent season at first team level. The average age of the team has been significantly lowered and to secure 80 points and finish just four points off the top is a remarkable achievement. In most seasons that would see us automatically promoted and we were of course incredibly unlucky not to do so. It wasn’t quite to be in terms of automatic promotion, but here we are in the play offs with everything to play for heading in to the semi final second leg. Away from tonight’s game, the Academy has enjoyed a good season, we have another batch of young players coming through and they enjoyed a good run in the FA Youth Cup. Alongside that, the Northampton Town Football & Education programme has enjoyed a very successful season with a number of notable performances, both individually and collectively. It has been another fantastic season for the Northampton Town Women, and all of us at the club offer our warmest congratulations on their title win and promotion. The progress made by our female football programme in recent seasons is quite astonishing and next season we will be playing in the fourth tier of women’s football. That is some rise. We have had another wonderful season in the community, and I never cease to be amazed at the difference the club and our Community Trust

make to so many people’s lives. Our community work has had to be flexible and has had to adapt during the last two Covid affected years, but we have done that and I am proud of the impact we have and continue to have. That work has been highlighted by the recent nomination for the More Than Football Award 2022. The club and Community Trust have been nominated alongside the likes of European giants Juventus, Wolfsburg, Werder Bremen and Feyenoord as one of just ten clubs from across Europe shortlisted and is recognition of the club’s Tackling Loneliness project. Such a nomination shows how highly our work is regarded and that is something to be very proud of. I would like to thank all of you who have supported the club this season. Home and away, through rain and shine, your support has been fantastic. We will look at some of our attendance figures in more detail once the season has finished but we know we have recorded our highest fourth tier average attendance in 16 years, even beating the 2015/16 title winning season and that despite having five midweek home games this season and some small away followings. That shows how strong the connection is between the club and the supporters and we are very grateful to you all for your support. Your support has played a big part this season and we need you to help raise the roof here at Sixfields tonight. We need a wall of noise from first whistle to last, getting right behind the lads, to give us the best chance of trying to come through what is a very difficult semi final tie. Season tickets for next season remain on sale. The discount period runs until the end of this month, and we have been hugely encouraged by the number of season tickets sold so far. We are expecting sales to pick up further as we get closer to the discount deadline and a big thank you to everyone who has or who will purchase a season ticket. We really do appreciate your support. ADAM CLAIMS TOMMY FOWLER MERIT AWARD Before the game with Exeter City, popular kit man Adam Moreton was the recipient of the Tommy Fowler Merit Award. The award was in recognition of Adam’s work for the club. The Tommy Fowler Merit Award is awarded by the Fowler family each year, and is often handed to someone who works behind the scenes to recognise the work they do for the club.

unn left the Cobblers in September 2008 to move to Blackburn Rovers but earlier this season he was back as part of the club’s 125th anniversary celebrations, and he was pleased to be back at Sixfields, a place that holds many happy memories for him. “I had not been back for a long time so to come back this season with the team doing so well was great,” he said. “I remember my time here at Northampton Town very clearly. I came through the academy here, I got my first team chance under John Gorman and enjoyed two really good seasons in the first team here. “After that I got my move to Blackburn and that was a dream

move for me really so I have plenty to be grateful to Northampton Town for.” That move to Blackburn allowed Bunn to play Premier League football and Bunn made 15 appearances for the Ewood Park side, six of which came in the Premier League and included a victory over Liverpool and a win at Old Traﬀord over Manchester United. While those memories will stay with Bunn forever, he will be forever grateful for the role the Cobblers played in his career. “The club gave me a huge amount of experience and guidance and really helped me and I am so grateful for the grounding the club gave me,” he recalled. “Under John Gorman I got my chance, I broke in to the team and

then kept my place under Stuart Gray. We had a really good season in League 1 and they are the memories that stick with me. “I was pleased to be part of the side that did well in League 1. Jason Crowe, Bradley Johnson and Luke Chambers were young players who all did well for us and we just missed out on the play-oﬀs but it was a good time for the club. “Since I stopped playing I have been a goalkeeping coach, Colin Calderwood gave me a chance to coach at Cambridge so I went and had two good seasons there and I am now on the agency side. I miss playing but it is good to be involved in the game and I am enjoying things.”

an Atkins’ side faced Cardiff City in the two-legged play-off semi-final, the first leg took place at Ninian Park in Cardiff on Sunday 11 May 1997. After a goalless first half, the Cobblers were reduced to ten men as Mark Cooper was sent off for violent conduct with 20 minutes of the match remaining. Seven minutes later, Sean Parrish scored with a lob from the edge of the Cardiff City penalty area to give Northampton a 1–0 lead. The second leg was held at Sixfields three days later. Ian

Sampson put Northampton Town ahead midway through the first half with a header and three minutes later, Cardiff’s Jeff Eckhardt was sent off for the use of an elbow. Jason Fowler scored for Cardiff in the 36th minute before goals from Ray Warburton and John Gayle made it 3–1. Simon Haworth scored a late goal for Cardiff, but the match ended 3–2 to the Cobblers who earned their place in the final with a 4–2 aggregate win. Northampton Town went on to play the first play-off final in the club’s history, this was also the club’s first

ever appearance at Wembley. The ﬁnal with Swansea City didn’t really live up to its billing until the dramatic ending. The Cobblers were awarded a free kick on the edge of the Swansea penalty area in injury time. John Frain struck the ball into the wall, but the referee adjudged that the defenders had encroached and ordered the kick be retaken. Frain’s shot curled around the wall and in to the net, giving the Cobblers a 1–0 win to secure victory and promotion to the Second Division.

on Brady named a fourth consecutive unchanged starting XI for a sold-out final home game of the Sky Bet League 2 season against already promoted Exeter City. The Cobblers almost made a dream start in a meeting between the division’s two most in-form sides, but goalkeeper Cameron Dawson beat Louis Appéré to the ball as he ran in on goal after just 20 seconds. Ali Koiki made a goal-saving challenge to prevent the visitors from scoring straight up the other end, clearing before Jevani Brown could capitalise on beating the offside trap. Appéré slipped in Josh Eppiah, who scored his first two goals in senior English football against Leyton Orient the previous week, but the Leicester City loanee’s shot across goal was well-saved by Dawson eight minutes in. The end-to-end start to the game continued as Grecians captain Matt Jay fired straight at Liam Roberts from Josh Key’s cutback on the quarter-of-an-hour mark. Aaron McGowan picked up a knock early on and was eventually forced off midway through the first half, being replaced by club captain Joseph Mills. Mitch Pinnock opened the scoring with his second goal of the season contender in as many games a few minutes later, flicking the ball over Jay and finding the bottom corner with a sensational half-volley that

sent the home fans wild. Roberts made a great stop to deny Timothee Dieng an equaliser early in the second period, making himself big and saving an effort from six yards with his left foot. Appéré showed good skill on the halfway line and played the ball over the top of the defence to Eppiah soon after, but the striker was tackled by Jonathan Grounds as he drove towards goal. The pair linked up again on the hour mark when Appéré pressed Pierce Sweeney and played the ball across goal to his strike partner, who was again denied from close range by Dawson. Jack Sowerby finished from close range 10 minutes later after Koiki’s scuffed shot deflected off Pinnock and fell kindly for the midfielder, but the flag was up for the tightest of offsides in the build-up. The Cobblers were made to pay for not taking advantage of their good start to the second half when two Exeter substitutes combined for an equaliser moments later. Jake Caprice squared for Sam Nombe, who scored from close range. Both sides pushed for a winner late on with Dieng heading over and Fraser Horsfall having an effort blocked on the line, but neither were able to find a vital third goal and the game ended level.

CRAWLEY have parted company with manager John Yems in the wake of racism and discriminatory conduct allegations. Yems had been suspended indefinitely last month following “serious and credible” accusations about his behaviour from playing staff with the Football Association later confirming it was investigating allegations of discriminatory words and conduct by the 62-year-old. Crawley were taken over by US cryptocurrency investors WAGMI United last month and new cochairman Preston Johnson said the club would begin a “global search” for their new manager. HARTLEPOOL have sacked manager Graeme Lee only five months after he was appointed and following a run of just one win in 11 games. The 55-year-old returned for a second spell in charge of the Cumbrians in February, steering them to safety. Simpson previously led England to the Under-20 World Cup title in 2017 and earned back-to-back promotions to League One with Carlisle in 2004-05 and 2005-06. JAMIE WALKER has signed a two-year permanent deal with Bradford having spent the second half of the season on-loan at Valley Parade from SPL side Hearts. The 28-year old forward made 19 appearances for the Bantams whilst on-loan, scoring four times. Fellow frontman Lee Angol, 27, has meanwhile signed a one-year contract extension at Valley Parade with the option of a further 12 months.

WALSALL defender Donervon Daniels has signed a new two-year deal with the Saddlers. The 28-year-old who was signed in January by then boss Matthew Taylor initially on a six-month deal, has been a key part of Michael Flynn’s side since the ex-Newport County boss took over at the Banks’s Stadium in February. Walsall captain Joss Labadie is however facing up to nine months on the sidelines after suffering an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury. The 31-year-old midfielder made 35 appearances for Walsall this season after joining from Newport last summer. HARROGATE midfielder Lloyd Kerry has retired at the end of the season and become the club’s head of recruitment. Kerry joined the Sulphurites in 2014 and made more than 220 appearances for the club. Halfway through the second half, Junior Mendes doubled the away side’s lead from close range after Lee Harper parried a Tom Curtis shot. In the final minute of the tie, the Cobblers were reduced to ten men when Ashley Westwood was sent off for a foul on Colin Larkin, and the match ended 2–0. later at Field Mill where, ten minutes before half-time, the Cobblers went ahead after Marc Richards scored with a volley from a Paul Trollope pass. Chris Hargreaves then scored with a header from a Martin Smith free kick to make it 2–0 at half time, levelling the tie on aggregate with two goals in two minutes. Thirty-four seconds into the second half, Smith made it 3–0 after Trollope capitalised on a misplaced pass from Wayne Corden and put the Cobblers ahead in the tie for the ﬁrst time. Tom Curtis, who had already been booked, escaped further sanction for

a foul on halfway, and shortly after scored from a rebound to level the tie on aggregate. Regular time finished with the aggregate score 3–3 and the game went into extra time, but with no change to the scoreline, a penalty shootout was required to decide who would go to Wembley. Both sides scored their first three penalties before Northampton’s Éric Sabin saw his spot kick saved by Kevin Pilkington, the Mansfield goalkeeper. All the remaining penalties were scored, and Mansfield won 5–4 to progress to the final.

The second leg was played at Whaddon Road four days later.

Vadaine Oliver scored Northampton Town’s opening goal with a header in the ninth minute of the match. He scored his second twenty minutes later when he converted a rebound from a Harriman shot which had struck the post after confusion between Boyle and Evans. The match ended 3–0 to Northampton Town who progressed to the Wembley final with a 3–2 aggregate win. Exeter awaited the Cobblers at

Wembley which, like the semi-final, was being played in an empty stadium due to Covid. The Cobblers went ahead through Ryan Watson’s early deflected strike after a long throw, before Callum Morton doubled the lead when he reacted quickly to tap in after a free-kick was headed across the face of goal. Exeter’s Dean Moxey was sent off early in the second half for a foul on Watson before late goals from Sam Hoskins and Andy Williams wrapped the game up.

on Brady named an unchanged starting XI for the third consecutive game while Max Dyche replaced Michael Harriman on the bench for the trip to in-form Leyton Orient. Former Cobblers striker Harry Smith was amongst the O’s substitutes. The home side threatened early on with a good block from Fraser Horsfall and a terrific reaction save from Liam Roberts to deny Aaron Drinan keeping the scores level. The Cobblers also had a good chance when Louis Appere played in Josh Eppiah but having half rounded Lawrence Vigouroux, the O’s keeper recovered to make the save. Vigouroux did likewise to deny Appere after his mis-placed clearance but the Cobblers weren’t to be denied when Mitch Pinnock broke the deadlock with a thunderous unstoppable strike into the top corner. Far from sitting on their lead the Cobblers kept coming forward with goalscorer Pinnock going close to a second after again taking aim from distance and Eppiah seeing a shot from an acute angle saved by Vigouroux. Jon Guthrie then did make it 2-0 after Orient failed to defend a corner, the defender stabbing home at the second attempt after his initial effort came back off the post. Vigouroux again denied Eppiah at his near post but the on-loan Leicester City forward wasn’t to be denied a third time when he made it 3-0 on 37 minutes, beating the offside trap and calmly slotting home after latching onto a ball over the top from Ali Koiki. Orient did however pull a goal back in first-half stoppage time, Paul Smyth’s cross turned home at close

range by Theo Archibald. The Cobblers weren’t done for the first half though and their three-goal lead was restored almost immediately, Josh Eppiah with a sublime volley into the bottom corner to make it 4-1 Cobblers at the break. Jordan Brown, on for the second half, made it 2-4 with a deflected strike on 50 minutes and the home side then made a double change, Richie Wellens bringing on Harry Smith and Alex Mitchell. Guthrie made a vital goal-line clearance to prevent Smyth halving the deficit while Roberts had to be alert to collect a backward defensive header from Koiki and Smith headed narrowly wide in some nervy moments for the Cobblers, Orient also appealing for a penalty when the ball appeared to strike Hoskins’ arm Shadrach Ogie was shown a straight red card after reacting badly to a challenge from Cobblers substitute Danny Rose, meaning the home side had to play out the final minutes down to ten men. The threat from Orient wasn’t over but the Cobblers defended well to clinch a massive three points which saw them move back into the automatic promotion places with two games to go.

A draw at home to Champions Forest Green Rovers on the final day saw the Stags clinch the final play-off spot ahead of Sutton United. Sutton’s 2-0 win at Harrogate meant Mansfield needed a point to ensure a top seven finish and a point is what they got. Matty Longstaff and Jordan Bowery scored for Mansfield but they were twice pegged back by Rovers in a game that finished 2-2. Nigel Clough’s side ended the campaign with back-to-back draws with their final away fixture at Salford City also ending 2-2. April was a mixed month for the Stags in terms of results with defeats against Forest Green (1-0), Sutton (3-2) and Carlisle (1-0). They did however end the month with back-to-back 2-0 home wins over Stevenage and Crawley. April began with a narrow 1-0 home win over the Cobblers and there was also a 4-0 away victory at Scunthorpe. Rhys Oates, a summer signing from Hartlepool, finished the season as the Stags top goalscorer in the league. Oates notched 11 times in his first season at Field Mill with Jordan Bowery and Oliver Hawkins on 8 goals apiece his closest challengers. Having brought in former Cobbler John-Joe O’Toole in October, Nigel Clough further boosted his squad in January with three more signings. Midfielder Matty Longstaff joined on-loan from Newcastle United on deadline day with winger Jamie Murphy also signed on loan from Hibernian. Earlier in January defender Kieran Wallace and striker Lucas Akins joined on permanent deals from Clough’s former club Burton Albion.

lough joined the Stags after spells in charge of Derby County, Sheffield United and Burton Albion. As a player, he made over 300 league appearances for Nottingham Forest, becoming the second highest scorer in Forest’s history, before moving to Liverpool in 1993. He also spent time with Manchester City and Burton Albion as a player, in a career that saw him win 14 caps for England. Clough’s managerial career started with non-league Burton Albion in 1998, and after steady progress in each of his first three seasons, the Brewers were crowned champions of the Northern Premier League in his fourth term at the helm. He moved to Championship outfit Derby County in 2009, leaving a table-topping Burton side who would eventually go on to secure their Football League status in that season. Derby had fears of relegation

before Nigel Clough took charge, but the now-55-year-old improved the club’s form and finished 14th in his first full term, four places higher than the previous campaign. In 2011/12, he led the Rams to their best start to a season in 106 years, as they began their campaign with four victories from four. After leaving Pride Park he joined Sheffield United in 2013, and despite the Blades sitting in the relegation zone when he took charge, they ended the campaign seventh in League One. Sheffield United also became the first third-tier side to reach the semi-finals of the FA Cup since 2001, a run which included victories over Premier League outfits Aston Villa and Fulham. This success led to Clough being named as the FA Cup Manager of the Year. Rhys Oates fired home a low shot to put the Stags ahead early on. Jordan Bowery then doubled the lead with a tapin at the back post. The visitors pulled a goal back going into the second leg when Ali Koiki found the bottom corner with a right-footed strike in the second half.

Northampton started brightly but the hosts took the lead midway through the first half when Hawkins headed home Matty Longstaff’s corner. The visitors looked to respond and Mitch Pinnock hit the cross bar but Liam Roberts made three good saves before the break. Paul Lewis was shown two yellow cards in quick succession late on as the Stags secured all three points.

ONE LAST, LAST PUSH I THINK I TITLED MY COLUMN FOR THE EXETER GAME ‘ONE LAST PUSH’ AND YET, HERE WE ARE TONIGHT, STILL PUSHING. FUNNY HOW LIFE GOES.

hat’s taken place over the last couple of weeks for the club is a combination of probably never to be repeated circumstances and yet, as I write this, we’re a one goal swing away from Wembley. I have every conﬁdence that the boys will give absolutely everything tonight to try and turn the deﬁcit around and, having been roared on both at the ground and from home by so many on Saturday night, I’m certain that our support can help them each step of what will be another tough game tonight. Feeling like I’m turning into Jon Brady, I’ll use one of his favourite phrases and say let’s get it right, this season has been tough, On the one hand, it’s easy to say football is only a game and there are certainly many worse or harder things taking place close to home or far away for many of us, many people we love and many we’ll never know. At the same time, the number of things faced by the team and individuals within our club in the period since Christmas has been huge and to have reached the point we’re at now is a real achievement. It’s been done on the back of being together, working hard and showing immense character. What I’ve learned in my time as Chaplain is that winning

football matches doesn’t just happen because someone shows skill, or another player makes a mistake, on a pitch. So much goes into every detail of a game and what I’ll say here is that everything within the control of Jon and the staff has been done to give us a great chance of promotion. Here’s hoping we take another step towards it tonight. Character. It’s one of those things we all have in common. We all have character. Some of us play characters, choosing to mask who we really are or how we really feel, whilst at the same time demanding from others that they don’t do that. Odd isn’t it. What is true without doubt is that we all experience times of joy when the hard work we put in pays off, and we also all experience disappointment and loss, times when even though we feel like we did everything right and ‘deserve’ success, it still doesn’t come. What do we do then? We keep on pressing on, and on and on. tonight we as fans have the opportunity to support and uphold the player, to get behind them in moments of joy (of which we hope there will be many), but also in moments of suffering too. ‘…we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and

character, hope. And hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us.’ (Romans 5:3-5). We can choose what kind of character we have, show and play. Let’s be people of good character, and let’s join with the players in the eﬀort of supporting them tonight. Whatever happens tonight have a great summer. I’ll be back writing these columns and supporting the whole club as Chaplain when pre season starts. What a privilege it is. Thank you for it. Coach Shane Goddard was pleased with his side’s performance despite not ﬁnishing the campaign with a win. “We worked so hard, created lots of chances and played some of the best football we’ve played this season today,” he said. “It was really pleasing to see the boys get the ball down and make positive decisions.

“It was a competitive game to ﬁnish the season which is a massive credit to both teams. “It was just about the ﬁne margins, because we hit the post and their goalkeeper made some really good saves. “We limited them to a couple of clear-cut chances, and we’ll probably look back and think we could have done more to stop them from scoring. “It’s frustrating that we conceded in added time and didn’t end the season with a win that I feel we deserved. “We did enough to win the game,

he event highlighted the achievements of many throughout the season, and players, staff, volunteers and fans enjoyed a good evening together. Two of the Football & Education programme’s second-year students, Patrick McGrath and Sophie Rylance, were named as the ‘Students of the Year’ during the evening. The award was sponsored by the University of Northampton and recognises the hard work of the pair

on-and-oﬀ the pitch throughout their two years in the FEP. Patrick has been a great student in the classroom and his tutors have always spoken very highly of his work. On the pitch, his progression has been notable. He has evolved from a fullback into a winger who uses his pace to exploit space, deliver crosses and add goals. Great work, Patrick! Sophie was quiet when she started the FEP and has gained conﬁdence over time. She has become a great

leader and role model for the other girls. A good example for others in the classroom, her behaviour and work is always something to admire. She wears the captain’s armband with pride and leads the defence, encouraging teammates with positive messages. Well done, Sophie! We are currently recruiting for 2022-23. FRASER AND EDEN NAMED COMMUNITY CHAMPIONS Fraser Horsfall and Eden Brown have been named as the club’s PFA Community Champions for the 2021/22 season. The PFA Community Champion is an award that aims to raise the awareness of the support that its members offer to the community projects run by the Northampton Town Community Trust throughout the course of the season. The two awards, which showcase all of the great work the club has done on and off the pitch this season, were presented at the annual End of Season Dinner recently. Fraser has supported a number of initiatives this season including video messages to fans, holiday course appearances and matchday activities. Fraser is professional and engaging at appearances quickly building rapports with Cobblers supporters (young and old) and is always open when talking to fans on matchdays and at community events. He has been an excellent role model and is able to impact everyone he meets leaving a smile on their face. Horsfall said, “I am privileged to receive this award; it has been great to see all the fantastic community run projects and stay connected with our fanbase. I am glad that I have been a positive role model and have inspired so many boys and girls across the season.” Eden is the inaugural winner of the Female PFA Community Champion award and has been supportive to several club and community projects and programmes including raising the profile of female football in the local community. She has gone out of her way to attend events and player appearances, fitting this in around her full-time work and women’s team training and playing. She has often made appearances in her own free time evidencing her excellent commitment to the wider women’s game. Brown said, “I’m really proud to be involve myself with the community trust and the club, providing an insight and influence in raising the profile of Women’s football and NTFC itself. “It is an amazing opportunity to be a role model to potential future female footballers and young members of our community. The growth of the game has gone from strength to strength, and I am honoured to be a part of it at Northampton Town.” John Hudson, the PFA Director of Corporate Social Responsibility added: “The PFA has been immensely proud of the outstanding efforts of players during a very difficult season once again and we feel they should be recognised for their support and involvement in the local community. The awards will hopefully raise awareness of the importance many of our members attach to their roles off the pitch and highlight their commitment to support those most in need during the pandemic. We would like to offer our congratulations to this season’s recipients of the 2021/22 PFA Community Champion Award.” We are extremely grateful to the work that both the male and female squads have put in to support our local community. The impact they have had on our work across the Community Trust this year has been brilliant, in what has remained a challenging time for everyone. NORTHAMPTON TOWN COMMUNITY TRUST DELIVER KNIFE CRIME WORKSHOPS DURING KNIFE A N G E L’ S V I S I T T O N O R T H A M P T O N The iconic 27-feet-tall statue is currently visiting Northampton as part of its nationwide tour to highlight the issue of knife crime in the UK. The statue, which was designed by Alfie Bradley at the British Ironwork Centre (BIC) in Oswestry, has been created from over 100,000 knives and blades confiscated by the UK’s 43 police forces. It was specifically created to highlight the negative effects of violent behaviour whilst solidifying our critical need for social change. Not only does the Angel act as a catalyst for turning the tide on violent and aggressive behaviour, but it also acts as a beautiful memorial designed to celebrate those lives who have been lost through these violent and thoughtless actions. britishironworkcentre.co.uk/showareas/the-knife-angel-official The Knife Angel has been brought to the town by West Northants Council (WNC), C2C Social Action and the Office of Northamptonshire Police, Fire & Crime Commissioner (OFPCC). The Northampton Town Community Trust is a partner working with these organisations to help raise awareness about this issue. All kinds of awareness raising events have been running to coincide with the Angel’s visit, including an antiviolence march in the town centre, a service and vigil at All Saints’ Church, a knife amnesty and The Northamptonshire Emergency Cadets giving emergency first aid training and safety demonstrations. NTFC Community Trust runs ‘Premier League Kicks’, football sessions and crime awareness educational workshops to engage young people at risk of knife crime, gang culture and anti-social behaviour. The trust’s Inclusion officer and teacher Anna Letts has taught seven workshops reaching 190 pupils so far: with year 6 as well as secondary ages and pupils with special educational needs. Northampton schools that visited the Guildhall in Northampton were Cambian School, Purple Oaks Academy, On Track Education. Anna visited West Northants Council offices in Daventry to work with pupils from The Parker Academy and hosted the Premier League Kicks’ football group from Blackthorn, Northampton one evening. Schools visited the statue as part of their visits. She also taught the workshops with year 6s at Victoria Academy, Wellingborough and is soon to visit Park Junior School in Wellingborough. Aims of the workshops: • To know what knife crime is. • To know the risks and consequences of carrying and using a knife/weapon. • To know how violence and knife crime impacts on communities. • To make a pledge to show support for this anti-violence campaign. • To know how to report knife crime and keep safe. (Including reporting anonymously at Fearless.org) During the workshop the students took part in youth voice activities which included group discussions around why young people carry weapons and the consequences of knife crime on different parts of the community. They shared their emotions and reactions about the Knife Angel and knife crime in general. Aspects such as ‘joint enterprise’, reasons why young people carry weapons, laws and consequences around knife crime, peer pressure and gangs were discussed. Everyone was asked to make a pledge to become an anti-violence champion. The county aims to sign up 1000s of people as anti-violence champions to join in support of a national call against the

tolerance of violent and aggressive behaviour. Some examples of secondary school students’ pledges: • “I am against knife crime because it destroys people’s families and puts young children in danger”. • “I’m against violence because it hurts, it breaks families, it’s traumatising, and it changes lives forever. There is no coming back from it”. • “I am against knife crime because it’s wrong, stupid and needs to stop. It breaks hearts, families, and friends”. • “I want to stop knife crime because it is not fair that different people and children die for other people’s stupid actions”. Inclusion officer Anna Letts said “The young people have engaged with this topic during the workshops in different ways; some are harder to reach than others. It is important that we as educators and organisations listen to youth voice to find out what is really going on in our communities, how young people get caught up in these kinds of situations and know how to help. Hopefully I have been able to challenge some common assumptions about knife crime and got the young people thinking about the decisions they may have to or are making. There is a lot to unpick with this issue and it can be hard to break down barriers to get the messages around knife crime and violence across. Using the Knife Angel’s visit is a great way to do this as it captures people’s interest and opens conversations.”

orthampton Town achieved promotion to the FA Women’s National League Division One Midlands with a 2-0 win at home to Lincoln United recently. Leah Cudone and Charlie Cooper scored the Cobblers’ goals as they were confirmed as East Midlands Women’s Regional Football League Premier Division champions with two fixtures remaining. Joint managers Lou Barry and Josh Oldfield made five changes to the team that beat Rise Park in the week, which included returns to the starting line up for Fay Noble and Cudone and a first start for Favour Omenazu. Possession was even in the first half, but the Cobblers created all the opportunities. Beth Artemiou forced Amy Hood into a diving save at the near post in the second minute, and had a followup from Alex Dicks’ shot across goal

blocked after a quarter-of-an-hour. Lincoln’s only shot of the opening period was a wide free-kick from Olivia Smith that hit the top of the crossbar midway through. Dicks twisted and turned in the area soon after and got a shot away from a tight angle, but Hood denied the hosts again. There was no stopping the Cobblers 10 minutes before the break when Rachael Mumford played a fantastic through ball to Cudone, who fired home to cap off an excellent team move and make the breakthrough. Dicks came close to doubling her side’s lead in the final minute of the first half, but she flashed an effort across goal and just wide. The second period was a closer affair, with neither side really threatening the opposing goalkeeper. Lincoln created two half-chances, Bianca Luttman intercepting a low ball across goal for Jo Daniel to collect and an attacker shooting wide

on the turn after a corner fell kindly for her. Cobblers’ nerves were settled with 10 minutes to go when substitute Cooper hooked Artemiou’s deep cross in oﬀ the post to double the advantage and bring her side within touching distance of promotion. They saw out the remaining 10 minutes of normal time as well as minutes of added time to secure a well-deserved win. by James Wiles
