BUCCLEUCH CUP

TheracewiththelongesthistoryinKelso’scalendar,The Buccleuch Cup was added to the programme in 1885 as a steeplechase for maiden hunters qualified with the Duke of Buccleuch’s hounds Additional local hunts were added to the qualification criteria in following years and the race continues to be targeted at local amateur horsemen. While representing the true grass roots of our sport, the Buccleuch Cup has produced some notable performances – not least when the race was won by Miss Winnifred Wallace’s Merryman, by 20 lengths, in 1958. Merryman went on to land both the Aintree Foxhunters’ Chase and the Scottish National the following year, before winning the first ever Grand National to be broadcast live on television in 1960. We are indebted to Weatherbys Hamilton for their support of the race in this Bicentenary season.

SPEED DAVIS fetched £105,000 after landing a maiden point in December and he is certainly one of the more interesting candidates in this contest. The hint should be taken if the market speaks in his favour Hierachy is greatly respected and is likely to be on the premises However, stablemate Master Bricklayer ticks plenty of the right boxes on paper and he is second choice.

PLAY SMARTER

CARRIGEEN KALI has made the frame on her last 2 starts, faring best of those held up when fourth at Carlisle last time, so she could be ready to open her account this time around. Lune de La Mer showed encouragement amidst greenness at this C&D on his Rules debut and is feared most, ahead of point-winner Lisnamult Lad.
