AFTERNOON FLAT RACING TUESDAY 31 AUGUST 2021 OFFICIAL RACECARD £3

EPSOM DOWNS RACECOURSE WELCOMES YOU

A very warm welcome to Epsom Downs this afternoon for a relaxed afternoon of racing, featuring seven competitive races. The action gets underway at 1.45 with the Chantilly Nursery Handicap, which is a qualifier for The Jockey Club Grassroots Nursery Final at Nottingham on 29 September. At 4.35 the John Benstead Handicap provides an opportunity for horses to qualify for The Jockey Club Grassroots Middle Distance Final on the same day. Having kicked off at the beginning of May, the Grassroots Series is designed to offer enhanced prize money for horses who tend to do their racing at a notch or two below Group or Listed level. We are very grateful the European Breeders Fund, who sponsor the Ashtead EBF Maiden Stakes, and to Molson Coors, who sponsor the concluding race on the card, the Molson Coors Handicap. Part of enjoying a day at the races is having something to eat and drink with friends and family and we have a range of food outlets and bars to suit all tastes. I would also recommend spending time at the Parade Ring, where you can observe the horses up close and get a great appreciation for these incredible athletes. We would ask all attendees to read the advice later in this racecard, which explains what we can all do to look after each other whilst on course, in line with the current Government guidance. I wish all the horses and their connections the very best of luck and I hope that you have a wonderful time with us here at Epsom Downs. SIMON DURRANT General Manager Epsom Downs Racecourse

Having shaped well a couple of times in novice company, GREAT HAVANA made a winning nursery debut at Ffos Las 3 weeks ago, and given his pedigree, this level needn’t be his limit. Bonita B is exposed but seems sure to give it another good go from the front, with My Little Tip the improver in the field, perhaps.

Second Race

Jim Ferguson passed away on 12th June 2021 after a short battle with Cancer. This race is run in his memory after his family raised close to £3000 for Racing Welfare in the build up to his funeral. This is a charity that had always been close to his heart; not only was he a lifelong racing fan, but both his daughters have spent their working lives racing and training flat horses. In particular, Jenny had many successes on the track, but her career was cut short due to injury. She was supported by racing charities and her twin sister Katy now works for Racing Welfare to help others in similar situations. His family are here today to celebrate his life.

SIR DAVID PROSSER TROPHY TO BE AWARDED TO MOST SUCCESSFUL EPSOM TRAINER

The Sir David Prosser Trophy celebrates the achievements of the most successful Epsom-based trainer from the 2021 racing season. The trophy was named in Sir David Prosser’s honour on his retirement from the non-executive board of Epsom Downs in 2013. Sir David made an enormous contribution to the development of the racecourse over many years and remained a loyal supporter of Epsom Downs and the local training community until his passing in March 2020. Wins at all racecourses across the country count towards the trophy and Simon Dow leads the way with 18 winners so far. Jim Boyle is his closest challenger with 15 winners and Michael Attwater lies in third place with 14 winners. Standings as of 25th August 2021. Trainer

The presentation for the winning trainer will be made at the Epsom Trainers Association Ball in November. The Sir David Prosser Trophy championship for 2021 runs from 5th November 2020 to 4th November 2021. Epsom Downs is home to nearly 180 horses in training. These horses have access to six miles and 250 acres of top quality training surface along the Surrey Downs. We are very proud of the training grounds here on Epsom Downs. Racing is part of our heritage and we want to ensure that we keep the Downs as a prestigious training ground and encourage further business from trainers and owners in the future. For more information on the trainers and training facilities at Epsom Downs please visit: www.jockeyclubestates.co.uk/epsom

JOHN AKEHURST 1962-2012

TERRY MILLS 1939-2010

John spent his entire life amongst racehorses. He was head lad before becoming assistant to his father Reg where he learnt first-hand his father's talent for preparing horses for big handicaps. John rode winners as an Amateur Jockey before first taking out a licence to train in 1990 from South Hatch Stables in Epsom. He moved to Lambourn for several years before returning to Epsom to take over when his father retired. John trained Group and Listed race winners as well as numerous major handicaps, including the 2002 Wokingham at Royal Ascot with Capricho.

Terry started his working life in the scrap metal business in South London and built his company into one of the largest waste disposal businesses in the country. Previously a racehorse owner Terry took out a trainer's licence in 1993 and trained throughout his career from Loretta Lodge in Headley. His first major win came with Bobzao in the 1994 Hardwicke Stakes at Royal Ascot and in 2002 he won the Group 1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes with Where Or When. Top handicappers from the yard included Norton who won the 2002 Royal Hunt Cup.

John was always a great supporter of Epsom as both a racecourse and training centre and was Chairman of the Epsom Trainers Association at the time of his sad passing in March 2012.

Terry improved the facilities and gallops at Loretta Lodge and invested considerably in well-bred horses. Terry was a great supporter of Epsom as both a racecourse and training centre and came closest to his dream of winning the Derby with All The Way who was 5th in 1999. Terry sadly passed away in January 2010.

JOHN BENSTEAD 1928-2019

John Benstead trained in the Epsom area throughout his long an illustrious career – initially in Ashtead in 1954, and for the bulk of his training life from The Limes in Shepherd’s Walk until his retirement in 1998. In 44 years of training John accumulated nearly 1000 winners, with standout horses being Baronet, who won two Cambridgeshire’s in 1978 and 1980, Blue Refrain, who won different races at Royal Ascot in each year from 1978 to 1980, and one of the top 2yo fillies of 1980 in Welshwyn. Those with longer memories will also recall Operatic Society, who was John’s first Flat winner in 1959, and in total won 30 races and still has a race named in his honour at Brighton. John also worked tirelessly representing the Epsom training industry on numerous bodies and projects for many years. He was an Epsom and Walton Downs Conservator, and in that role devoted a huge amount of time and effort to what ultimately became The Epsom and Walton Downs Regulation Act of 1984, which gives the legislative framework to so many of the activities on the Downs.

RACEHORSE & JOCKEY WELFARE

The welfare of the sport’s equine and human participants is paramount to British Horseracing. All racehorses competing in Britain are stabled at the premises of trainers who are licensed by The British Horseracing Authority. The standards demanded by The BHA of licensed racehorse trainers far exceed those prescribed by animal welfare legislation. The British Horseracing Authority similarly licenses every racecourse, setting high standards for the racing surface and all parts of the course used by competitors, both human and equine. BHA Officials ensure that racecourses delivers these standards. In addition Epsom Downs Racecourse employs three veterinary surgeons, whose sole responsibility it is to provide care to the horses throughout their time at the racecourse. In the event of an incident on the racecourse, any horse affected will receive immediate treatment from the racecourse’s veterinary team. Qualified paramedics and doctors are also on hand in the case of any incident involving a jockey. If any incident occurs during a race it is routine practice for screens to be erected around the horse or jockey receiving treatment. This is to allow the veterinary or medical personnel to make a safe and accurate diagnosis and so that they may perform any treatment in a private and calm environment. If necessary, horses and riders will be transported from the course to receive further treatment at the nearest equine hospital or Accident & Emergency hospital.
