PRESIDENT'S LETTER

Their eyes sparkled. Their energy was contagious. Rooms rattled with creativity and excitement!

There is so much that your membership makes possible that you never see on television or hear on the radio. We love the programming, music, and conversation that we bring to the region. Still, moments like the ones celebrated during this summer’s Visual Storytelling Camp and La Casita’s STEM from Dance Camp also brought joy and inspiration to our studio, courtyard, classroom, and café—all because of your contributions to the station.

Let me tell you a bit about these camps. Nine teens, full of promise and passion, huddled under the guidance of SUNY Oswego Professor and WCNY Board Member Francisco Suarez for three weeks to learn visual storytelling. He showed them cameras and make-up and taught scriptwriting and editing. By the end of the camp, they produced a small zombie classic called “Mob of the Undead.” Based loosely on “The Walking Dead,” this modern take on survival and betrayal in today’s Syracuse played to a packed house of family and friends at a viewing party.

When the camp started, Professor Suarez said he wanted to give these kids a chance to tell their stories. He said that along the way we would watch the next group of Lin Manuel Mirandas, Spike Lees, and Ava DuVernays emerge. Leaving the viewing party, the kids—Gia and Isaiah, Azalea, Augie and Alex, Jiyong and Madden, Tahje’, and Terri—exchanged emails and plans to produce new films.

The next week, WCNY’s café bustled with girls, 8 to 18 years old, writing code on tables decked with computers. As part of La Casita’s STEM from Dance Camp, they came together under the leadership of Executive Director Tere Paniagua to create a multi-lingual, multi-national musical and magical dance spectacular. From late July through mid-August, the girls spent the mornings mastering the choreography of the dance at the La Casita Cultural Center, a block away from the station. They gathered in the café at WCNY in the afternoons coding the patterns of lights that would flash in sync with the movement.

The two sisters from Colombia my wife and I are hosting this summer attended the STEM from Dance Camp. The dance steps had them spinning all day and the coding expanded their minds. Along with the other girls, they could grasp futures full of potential.

These are just some of the educational experiences that WCNY helps to make happen. You may not see them on air, yet you can almost feel lives changing as opportunities are realized. This would not happen without your generosity and support.

Thank you.

TRICK O’ TREAT YOURSELF THIS FALL!

An apple a day keeps the doctor away, which is perfect because they’re in season! But what keeps the mind at ease? As the weather is cooling down and kids begin going back to school, take some time for a much-needed post-summer reset. Here are a few ways to show yourself a little love this season by FALLing into some self-care habits.

If you find yourself practicing any of these self-care tips, post them on Instagram and tag us @wcnypbs.

DID YOU KNOW?

The average adult in the U.S. reports feeling relaxed for 40 minutes a day, which is only 3% of the entire day! Use these tips to ensure that only leaves pile up this fall, not negative feelings.

Read a Good Book

Exercise your mind by reading! Whether it be a fan favorite you’ve read a hundred times, a seasonal tale, or a mushy rom-com set in the dead of winter, any book is welcome to get your mind moving.

Begin a Gratitude Journal

Studies show that expressing gratitude has a direct correlation with increased happiness. Begin or end each day by expressing thanks for someone or something. Bonus points if you tell them that you appreciate them!

Treat Yourself

Snuggle Up, Light a Candle, and Watch a Comfort Movie

As Halloween draws closer, there are many great movies to indulge in, new and old alike. Light a candle and enjoy a time of relaxation while setting the holiday mood.

Green outdoors, Take air, Take options

Call Not Life up reconnect that

Indulge in Seasonal Activities

Go apple or pumpkin picking, visit a haunted house, carve a pumpkin, finish a corn maze, or whatever might fill your heart with joy. Abbott Farms Fall Festival, Zoo Boo at Rosamond Gifford Zoo, and Frightmare Farms Haunted Scream Park are just a few of the local family fun activities to consider.

Listen to Music or a Podcast

Take time for some deep breaths and soothing tunes. If you need something to listen to, scroll through Spotify for a podcast that resonates with you, or scan the code below and listen to the fallinspired playlist I created just for you!

You work so hard and deserve to be treated! Whether that comes in the form of a seasonal drink or a day of sleeping in, you deserve a little extra sometimes. Step

As we too uncomfortable to wear. you

Have a Self-Care Day or Night

Self-care looks different for everyone and what might work for one person might not work for another. Whether you want to relax with a face mask, draw a bubble bath, take a walk with your dog, or just turn off all screens, set aside specific time to do something just for you.

Do Something to Appreciate Nature

Green thumb or not, it is important to embrace the outdoors, especially during such a beautiful season. Take a step outside, breathe in the crisp autumn air, and embrace the warm tones of the landscapes. Take a walk or just wake up before the sun, the options are endless!

Do Something You’ve Been Putting Off

We are all guilty of putting off something, but now is the time to get it done! Clean out the drawer, pick up that new hobby, take that new class. Life is too short to keep putting things off. You got this!

Apple Cider Sangria

6 Servings

A delightful fusion of sweet white wine, light rum, apple cider, and a touch of fizz, creating a refreshing and cozy cocktail perfect for fall gatherings.

Ingredients

• 1 Bottle or 750 ml of Moscato wine (semi-sweet white wine)

• 1 Cup light rum

• 1 ½ Cups apple cider

• 1 Cup ginger ale

Call an Old Friend or Relative You Have Not Seen in a While

Life can get busy and making the time to catch up with people becomes harder. This fall, try to reconnect with someone who makes you feel good that you have not talked to in a while.

Try a New Recipe

In a season inspired by pumpkin spice, cinnamon, and apple flavored everything, try cooking/baking something new! Whether a sweet treat or a savory meal, spice up your fall by adding seasonal food to your menu.

Step Outside of Your Comfort Zone

As scary as this can be, growth occurs the moment we stop merely doing the easy because we are too afraid of the difficult. Start small with that uncomfortable conversation you’ve been meaning to have or that outfit you've been too afraid to wear. Feel the weight lift from your shoulders as you embrace the discomfort.

• Apple slices for serving

• Ice

Directions

1. In a large pitcher, combine all ingredients and stir well.

2. Serve sangria over ice with thinly sliced or chopped apples.

Fall in Love with Ithaca!

Every Porch is a Stage

Lesley Greene could not predict what she and her husband, Robbert van Renesse, set in motion that spring day in 2007 when they decided to play ukuleles on their porch in Ithaca, New York.

A neighbor walked by their Franklin Street home, heard the music, and stopped. After a brief conversation, Greene and the neighbor, Gretchen Hildreth, figured there were a lot of people in Ithaca with musical talent. They also realized that every porch is a stage.

Sixteen years later, Porchfest Ithaca celebrates community through music on porches across town. The event includes more than 150 performers and groups. It will close a dozen streets in the Fall Creek and Northside neighborhoods.

WCNY is excited to be at Porchfest this year with cameras and microphones to capture the spirit of this rolling block party that has spawned another 170 Porchfests around the world.

There are Porchfests today in Minneapolis, Modesto, Mt. Morris, and Missoula, and as far-flung as Morpeth in New South Wales, Australia—all because on one sun-filled day, Lesley and Robbert broke out the ukuleles on Franklin Street in Ithaca.

Porchfest 2023 takes over Ithaca’s Fall Creek and Northside neighborhoods on Sunday, Sept. 24 from noon to 6 p.m. Learn more at www.porchfest.org.

Sesame Street in Communities (SSIC) is a Sesame Workshop initiative providing tools and resources to empower parents, caregivers, and service providers to support children in key areas that are critical for children’s wellbeing and success.

Sesame Workshop recognizes that when a family member struggles with addiction, the whole family struggles. But parents, teachers, caregivers, and other caring adults can comfort children and guide them through difficult moments. That’s why Sesame Workshop developed bilingual (English and Spanish) resources that leverage love and support to help children cope with parental addiction.

LINER NOTES

A busy summer here at Classic FM is leading into an exciting fall season. Enjoy, as you “listen” along with us!

A very sincere thank you to all who contributed to our special one-day fundraising effort that occurred on June 21. The money raised that day contributed directly to a critical upgrade of our radio station hardware and software systems. That upgrade was successfully launched in early August, and we are now in great shape for the foreseeable future as we continue to bring you the region’s very best music and community-based programming on all three of our WCNY radio stations.

September starts season two of the Classic FM Music Educator Award. This program launched a year ago to recognize outstanding music teachers from across our listening area. We were thrilled to honor 10 amazing teachers in the 2022-23 program, and we will be doing that again this year with another set of dedicated, extraordinary educators. To nominate a teacher, or to watch video tributes to each of our past honorees, go to www.wcny.org/musiceducator.

Congratulations to our own “Colonel” Bill Knowlton for 50 years of his Bluegrass Ramble Picnic, the largest bluegrass music festival in New York and New England. Classic FM was again thrilled to co-sponsor this wonderful event held on August 6 at the beautiful Little York Lake in Cortland County. Every year, Bill and his committee put together a terrific event. This year’s featured 17 different bands and we were pleased to do our part to make it a great success. Don’t forget to get your weekly dose of this unique American art form—listen to Bill’s Bluegrass Ramble show every Sunday night from 9 p.m. to midnight on Classic FM.

In September, Community FM is also participating in a statewide public broadcasting effort to raise awareness of issues surrounding youth mental health and suicide prevention. Find out more at www.wcny.org/ communityfm.

Finally, listen starting Labor Day morning as we count down YOUR picks of the Top 40 classical music pieces of all time. Thanks to all of you who sent in a ballot in July and August. This is your annual opportunity to directly influence the great classical music you hear every day on Classic FM.

Thanks for listening, and thanks for your support of WCNY’s radio stations!

Supermodel Emme

Local Heroine and International Icon

Not many people can say they have been on “People’s” List of Beautiful People—twice. But for Syracuse University grad and modeling icon Emme, that might be the least of her achievements. She’s graced every possible magazine cover, won countless awards, and has recently been on CNN talking about the dangers of the new weight loss drugs. Emme is a trailblazing social reformer for women’s empowerment and positive body image and has made it her mission to challenge society’s pressures to fit into unachievable standards. Many people know Emme as the first “plus-size” model, although that description is falling into disfavor. The irony is that Emme is the same size as the average American woman.

I had the great pleasure of speaking with Emme on my podcast, “Zestful Aging.” It was a spirited conversation as I also work as a psychotherapist with a specialty in eating disorders. I was curious what gave her the courage to speak up to an infamously unforgiving industry.

An athlete from an early age, Emme excelled in rowing growing up in Saudi Arabia. She says that learning how skilled and powerful her body was helped her develop confidence she then drew upon when she challenged the model industry’s unhealthy body standards. Winning rowing medals and being invited to the Olympic trials provided the conviction that her body wasn’t “wrong” or needed to be altered. Later, when she became a student at the Newhouse School at Syracuse Univer sity, she learned that there are “always two sides to the story.” She approached the arduous role challenging the fashion industry as a story that needed to be told.

Emme was sincere, honest, and a delightful guest. She left me with the following advice: find the joy in life and challenge what the advertisements tell you that you need to feel beauti ful. You can find out more about Emme and her advocacy at EmmeStyle.com.

WCNY's "On the Money" Unveils Micron's Transformative Arrival in Syracuse

On September 14 at 8 p.m., WCNY presents the highly anticipated season premiere of "On the Money" with J. Daniel Pluff. The third season's opening episode promises to be extraordinary as it delves deep into the transformative power of Micron Technology's arrival in Syracuse.

In an hour-long episode of WCNY's "On the Money," the spotlight is fixed on Micron Technology's groundbreaking decision to establish its largest manufacturing location in the country right in the heart of Central New York. With an esteemed panel comprising of Scott Gatzemeier, Corporate Vice President, Front End U.S. Expansion at Micron Technology; National Grid’s Melanie Littlejohn, who is Co-Chair of the Micron Community Engagement Committee; Dr. Warren Hilton, President at SUNY Onondaga Community College; Ryan McMahon, Onondaga County Executive; Kevin Younis, Chief Operating Officer and Executive Deputy Commissioner at Empire State Development; and Rob Simpson, President & CEO at CenterState CEO, discuss the potential economic impact and transformative power of Micron's arrival.

The excitement surrounding Micron's decision to build a semi-conductor fabrication facility in CNY is palpable. Viewers will be taken on a journey to discover the

roots of what is being hailed as the biggest positive economic news in this area for more than a century. The investment figures are nothing short of mind-blowing, signifying a potential boost to the local economy, as well as the housing and job markets.

The episode reveals the behind-thescenes efforts of the teams that have been working tirelessly on Micron initiatives this past year, even though results may not yet be visible to the public. Viewers will hear from McMahon expressing unwavering confidence in the project and his belief that it will indeed happen.

Micron’s Gatzemeier will further emphasize the commitment, signaling a clear vote of confidence in the region's potential to support cutting-edge technological advancements.

Rob Simpson, President & CEO at CenterState CEO, reflects on the work already undertaken at the Micron site in Clay, NY to prepare for construction, and on the efforts to facilitate education and job opportunities. Simpson will reveal details of the facility's construction, which is slated to commence in 2024, and promises to be a significant milestone for the Central New York community.

While Micron's arrival presents tremendous opportunities, it is not without its challenges. The episode delves into the environmental approval process that is currently underway and the traffic congestion concerns that have been raised since the announcement last year.

Viewers will hear how construction is progressing for the planned facility that will usher in a new era of technological innovation in the region. Micron's chips, which will be produced in this facility, are ubiquitous, powering a wide range of applications from 5G and A.I. to automobiles. The company's position as the #1 data chip provider to the automobile industry underscores its strategic importance in meeting the increasing demand for information access.

Given that the global market is dominated by overseas chip manufacturers, Micron's decision to build in the U.S. is

significant. It may make the nation more self-reliant in this critical sector, ensuring a competitive edge in the memory market.

The episode also addresses skepticism surrounding the project and seeks to provide answers to questions such as whether this project is a fleeting endeavor like many that have come before it.

Additionally, the episode will explore the vital role and need for infrastructure development, as I-81 and Micron's facility must be coordinated for a comprehensive transformation of CNY. This will be accomplished, in part, by New York State investment focused on enhancing the community with housing, workforce development, transportation, and childcare.

Meet "On the Money's" New In-Studio Host, Laiza Semidey

In Syracuse, Laiza Semidey is bringing people across the public and private sectors together to help deliver information and forge relationships that are helping to reshape the regional landscape.

By spearheading diversity within multiple sectors, her determination to cultivate opportunities that empower underrepresented communities is propelling industries toward a more inclusive future.

In her role at the CenterState Corporation for Economic Opportunity, Semidey is dedicated to helping develop a broad workforce for the region’s growing businesses. Now, WCNY is pleased to introduce Semidey as the new co-host of “On the Money.” She will bring her perspective on the necessity of collaboration among employers, community organizations, and educational institutions to the show focused on the region’s economic development.

If it moves forward as intended, the impact of this project goes beyond numbers. Dr. Warren Hilton, President at Onondaga Community College, takes viewers through the project's potential to level the playing field for the CNY community. Micron's arrival presents a life-changing opportunity, he says, and will allow individuals with associate degrees to earn six-figure salaries.

Micron's presence is projected to create around 9,000 direct jobs, necessitating the need for talent development and recruitment. The episode will show how the company is collaborating with local engineering schools, community colleges, and trade schools to prepare a skilled workforce to support Micron's operations.

As “On the Money” progresses through its third season, the show—which features a new co-host [see sidebar]—promises to remain a reliable source for updates on impactful economic development projects and financial opportunities that shape Central New York communities. With Micron's arrival, CNY stands at the threshold of a new era, poised to become a leader in the rebirth of American manufacturing.

In the words of Ryan McMahon, "The best way out of poverty is a job," and with Micron's investment, CNY is positioned to witness a transformative impact that will elevate its economic prospects for years to come. Don't miss out on this season of “On the Money” as we witness the unfolding of a pivotal chapter in CNY's economic history.

Semidey is an active participant on a number of boards, including the Upstate Minority Economic Alliance, Blueprint 15, and The Good Life Foundation, where she aims to facilitate equity and inclusivity, and to catalyze positive change. As a member of the advisory council for the new MOST & Micron Technologies semi-conductor manufacturing exhibit, for example, she helped launch an experience that will introduce schoolchildren to careers in advanced technology.

That project was fitting for Semidey. It merged two of her greatest passions—the goal of creating an inclusive workforce across our region and the devotion she has to her nine-year-old son, who inspires her commitment to create a nurturing environment where individuals from all backgrounds can flourish.

S Ready, Set, Action!

ummer camp is always great fun, but what if camp could be both fun and educational? WCNY and SUNY Oswego partnered together to create a summer camp that does just that!

The first ever Visual Storytelling Camp aimed to educate campers on the process of storytelling in terms of character development, storyline, plot, and resolution, as well as the visual techniques that transform a good story into a great one. Students learned how to record both audio and visuals and edit their work with the help of WCNY and SUNY Oswego staff.

Visual Storytelling Camp took place weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. from June 27 to July 26. Ten students between 7th and 9th grade were hard at work for their duration of camp compiling a zombie movie that they produced, directed, and edited. Located at the WCNY studios in Syracuse, NY, each camper was challenged to use their newfound multimedia-knowledge to make their film, “Mob of the Undead.”

On only day one, head of the program and WCNY Board Member, Francisco Suárez, said the campers could already “name and describe the use of different camera angles and camera movements.” Pride would be an understatement amongst the staff as they watched these campers learn and grow.

When asked about their experience at camp, the students couldn’t stop saying good things. Each student who was interviewed hoped to come back next year and would recommend the experience to other kids their age.

When interviewed, Madden O’Mara, 14, was decked out in zombie makeup, eager to finish filming. “I found it really interesting learning how to film, and understanding how to set up a scene,” Madden said.

Terri McCray, 11, added to Madden’s favorite part of camp, stating she “Loved making the videos [they filmed] have [different] effects.” The consensus of the

students, including campers Azalea McCarthy, 13, and Tahje’ Brown, 12, interviewed said their biggest takeaway of camp was learning different camera techniques and angles.

Leaving camp, students were equipped with an entirely new toolbelt of film and storytelling skills, simultaneously having a great time in the process!

These campers worked exceptionally hard to put together an un(dead)beatable zombie film that they proudly shared with their family and friends at a viewing party at WCNY.

If you want your child to be part of the storytelling fun, stay tuned for more information about the second annual Visual Storytelling Summer Camp coming in 2024!

Impactful Giving

WCNY is thrilled to announce its deep appreciation for the extraordinary generosity of two donors who recently left substantial bequests to support its mission. These transformative contributions will significantly enhance WCNY’s ability to serve the public and uphold its commitment to providing high-quality programming and services.

The bequests, which were received during the past year, serve as a testament to the incredible impact that WCNY has had on individuals and communities across the state. By recognizing the organization’s invaluable contributions and choosing to leave a lasting legacy, these donors have demonstrated their unwavering belief in WCNY’s mission and their commitment to ensuring its continued success.

One of the bequests was generously gifted from the Estate of Joyce Hunter Joyce was a devoted supporter of WCNY for many years. She grew up in Elbridge, NY. She worked at Syracuse University and later worked for several airlines before retiring from Eastern Airlines.

Traveling was in Joyce’s blood; starting in her 20s, she took advantage of her airline benefits with friends and family crisscrossing the globe. Her traveling continued until her late 80s, with many cruises to various places worldwide.

Music was always important to Joyce. When she was younger, she played organ in church and for her own fun later in life. In retirement, she listened to classical music, opera, and Broadway show tunes. Music was always playing unless she was watching TV—amongst her favorites were “The Lawrence Welk Show” airing on Saturday evenings on WCNY-TV and The Met Opera airing on Classic FM on Saturdays at 1 p.m.

The second bequest, generously donated by Barbara Glath, underscores the significant impact WCNY has on education and lifelong learning. Barbara graduated from North Syracuse High School, Onondaga County College, and Syracuse University, where she earned AAS, BA, and MS degrees. She considered herself a lifelong learner and took postgraduate courses toward a CAS degree and BOCES and OASIS courses. She also loved to be outdoors

and always sought adventures and new experiences. She was an avid hiker, camper, and athlete who loved gardening and doing home projects. Her greatest love was traveling to new places, meeting new people, and learning about their cultures. Barbara worked as a teacher, caseworker, probation officer for Onondaga County, NYS employment counselor, and a high school guidance counselor at Fayetteville-Manlius High School and Clinton Central Schools.

These generous gifts align with WCNY’s commitment to providing enriching educational content and fostering a love for learning. These generous gifts will allow WCNY to continue to empower individuals of all ages through educational programming.

WCNY’s President and CEO, Mitch Gelman, expressed sincere gratitude on behalf of the organization, saying,

We are immensely grateful to Joyce and Barbara for their exceptional generosity and belief in WCNY’s mission. Their bequests will enable us to expand our programming, reach new audiences, and make an even greater impact on the communities we serve. We are truly humbled by their support and will honor their legacy by continuing to provide informative, educational, and inspiring content to our viewers and listeners.”

National Estate Planning Awareness Week Encourages

Individuals to Secure their Legacy

National Estate Planning Awareness Week will be taking place from October 16–22. This annual event, established by Congress and the National Association of Estate Planners and Councils in 2008, aims to educate and empower individuals to plan for their future and protect the legacies they leave behind.

Estate planning is a critical process that often gets overlooked or delayed, leaving families and loved ones vulnerable to unnecessary financial burdens and legal disputes. As part of National Estate Planning Awareness Week, WCNY is dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of creating a comprehensive estate plan that reflects individual goals and values.

It is the perfect time to start thinking about your own plans. By engaging in thoughtful estate planning, individuals have the opportunity to protect their assets, ensure their wishes are honored, and provide financial security for their loved ones.

The goal of this special week is to empower individuals with the knowledge and tools they need to make informed decisions about their legacy. We believe that everyone deserves the peace of mind that comes with a comprehensive estate plan.
