I LOVE MY JOB. In fact, this fall celebrates 11 years of my serving as executive director of the Wake County Bar Association and Tenth Judicial District Bar, and 21 years of working in the bar association world. However, like many jobs, this field has its quirks. These quirks are exactly what I love about my job: Instead of having a weekly or even monthly work flow, ours is an annual wave of favorite events, meetings and milestones. I think that is how so many years have flown by, and it still feels fun and fresh to me. Possibly the biggest quirk is getting a new boss – or, excuse me, bosses – every year with the election of presidents of the Tenth and WCBA. We have been so very fortunate to have great leaders stepping up to the plate to lead these organizations, and I have loved getting to know each and every one of them and their quirks. Some insist on daily phone calls – or even a weekly catch-up call every Friday at 4:30 p.m. Some presidents prefer to communicate solely by text or email. Some want to meet in person in the afternoon over an adult beverage, some feel like a 7:30 a.m. coffee meeting is the way to go. All of them – except sadly for this year’s presidents Dave Holm and Russell Babb – have had the opportunity to travel with me to the ABA’s Bar Leadership Institute and various conferences of the National Conference of Bar Presidents. It is an intense two years of volunteering, and the relationship that these leaders build with me during that time creates an enduring friendship. I’m not going to lie: there are some years that ended far too quickly and others that couldn’t end soon enough. But, in all cases, our presidents have been committed and concerned, passionate and proactive. I’ve loved getting to know the ones we’ve had, and can’t wait to see what our future leaders bring to the table! WBF
