InterKulturell® Mission and Vision

PL

InterKulturell® Mission

E

InterKulturell® is a four-level, standards-based, thematically-organized program. In levels one and two, there are six in-depth units; there are eight differentiated units at the Intermediate level, which may be used with levels three and four. Each unit provides learners with opportunities to interact and engage with authentic materials and adolescent speakers of the language. By learning in an intercultural context, students acquire communication skills and content knowledge while exploring the products, practices, and perspectives of German-speaking cultures.

InterKulturell® aims to prepare learners to communicate, explore, and connect across cultures in order to foster attitudes of mutual understanding and respect.

InterKulturell® Vision

Our vision is a world where language learning takes place through the lens of interculturality, so students can discover appropriate ways to interact with others whose perspectives may be different from their own.

M

Welcome to InterKulturell® 1 Liebe Schüler*innen,

hallo und herzlich willkommen!

SA

In today’s global world, our lives are interkulturell: We all experience people and influences from a variety of cultures on a daily basis. As we live, learn, work, and play in our communities and abroad, we interact in person and online with people whose experiences and perspectives may be different from our own.

The learning materials in the InterKulturell® program were designed to help you communicate in German and develop the attitudes and perspectives needed to interact appropriately with German speakers. By working with the program, you will gain an appreciation for the differences between our cultures and also learn to recognize the similarities we share. Thank you for your commitment to learning German and for exploring Germanspeaking cultures. In writing this book, we have tried to provide you with ways to connect to people with diverse cultural backgrounds - that has brought us great personal and professional joy. We hope that this program will help you to welcome and embrace the opportunities that will enable you to live interkulturell. Mit freundlichen Grüßen

FOKUS KULTUR

11 Bräuche: Begrüßungen 11.1 Zusammenhänge c

Think about your culture and consider the following questions: How do young people greet one another? How do greetings differ based on age and social groups?

Ein Küsschen zur Begrüßung

Austria, Germany, and Switzerland are all German-speaking countries, but you will notice that there are differences in words and accents based on the regions. For example, there are many different ways to say “hello.” Throughout Germany, you might hear Hallo, Guten Tag, or Tag, as greetings. In northern Germany, you may also be greeted with Moin moin! In southern Germany and Austria, Grüß Gott, Grüß dich, and Servus are common. The Swiss use Grüezi, Sali, and Hoi. These are just some of the regional greetings you might hear in the German-speaking world.

M

Within these countries, people with particular hobbies or jobs greet each other with special phrases. For example, in the mountains, hikers might say Frisch auf! whereas mountain climbers may greet each other with Berg frei! Soccer players might say Ball hoi!, and pilots or parachuters may call Glück ab! to signal luck for a safe landing. Miners might say to one another Glück auf!

In German-speaking cultures, especially among older generations, people make eye contact and shake hands when they greet someone. Younger generations have developed different ways of greeting others. Young men tend to greet their male friends with the Einschlag (a slapping-together of hands in a shake). Young women often greet their female friends with the double-cheek Küsschen, although there are many variations on these greetings.

11.2 Perspektiven o

SA

Why do you think there are differences in the ways people greet each other based on region, occupation, age, or social group? Do you use special greetings and gestures with different groups of people in your community? What factors determine which phrases and gestures you use? Do you think the phrases you use will change over time?

C

12 Interkulturelle Vergleiche d In German-speaking countries, when you ask how someone is doing, people wait to hear the answer before moving on or changing the subject. How is it in your culture? Do you use the phrase “How's it going?” as a greeting or to find out how someone is? Based on what you have seen, heard, and discussed, what types of practices accompany greetings in German-speaking cultures that are different from those in your community? Answer the questions in the discussion forum.

D

Lernstrategien

These brief learning strategies will help you maximize your learning.

Decoding Compound Words The German language has many compound words such as Handball. The components of a compound word can be different parts of speech, like nouns, verbs, or even adjectives. Follow these steps to help you decipher the meaning of a compound word: 1. Do not be intimidated by the length of the word! There are some compound words in German that are up to thirty letters long, but if you take a moment to look at it, you will see the shorter components. 2. Identify the root word. In a compound word, the root word is the last component that you see. For example, Spiel is the root word for both Brettspiel and Videospiel.

PL

3. See if the word can be broken down into smaller parts you recognize. Even if you do not recognize all of the parts, this will give you some helpful clues. 4. The final part of the compound word indicates the primary meaning as well as the article to be used (if it is a person, place, or thing). der Pfadfinder = der Pfad (path) + der Finder (finder) = scout/pathfinder das Zeltlager = das Zelt (tent) + das Lager (camp) = tent camp

der Naturschutz = die Natur (nature) + der Schutz (protection) = environmental protection

Look at the students’ introductions in Wir kommunizieren 3, Wie sagt man das?. What words do you consider compound words?

1. Talking to Each Other about Hobbies and Interests Conjugating Verbs in the du-, ihr-, and Sie- Forms

The verb (action word) stays in second position, even when the sentence starts with a time phrase instead of the subject. This is called inverted word order. The subject (person or thing doing the verb) must remain next to the verb, so it is always in the first or third position.

There are three ways to express the pronoun “you”: du (informal, singular), Sie (formal singular or plural), ihr (informal, plural). See the chart for examples of the forms.

Unsere globale Gemeinschaft 37 Ein Wandertag

You want to support your local German-speaking community through volunteer work.

39.1 Über freiwillige Arbeit recherchieren b c

Use search terms such as freiwillig arbeiten to investigate some ways in which German youth from a partner school or in a specific city in a German-speaking country volunteer. Answer the questions.

PL

Organize a Wandertag, a Volkswanderung, or a Volksmarch in your community to raise awareness for your school’s German program or club or another worthy cause. Decide on a location and date of the hike and create an invitation for local German speakers to participate.

37.1 Einen Wandertag organisieren b w c

1. Internet link:

Reread the Fokus Kultur about Wandern and use the internet to research a typical community Wandertag or Schulwandertag in a German-speaking country of your choice. In small groups, use the information to create an itinerary and route for a Wandertag to which you will invite German-speaking members of the community.

2. What volunteer activities are available?

1. List some typical components of a community Wandertag or a Schulwandertag.

2. Now it is your turn to make a route for a similar hike in your community. Find a map of the area and label it with major points of interest along the way. Include places where people can stop and take a break, get water, use a restroom, view an historic site, or get help if needed. Present your group’s route to the class for a vote or create a new route based on consensus.

Rostock, MecklenburgVorpommern, Deutschland

E

Sprachtipp Die Uhrzeit

When telling time, the word um is used for at, and the colon is read as the word Uhr for o’clock. For example, at 8:45 is read as um acht Uhr fünfundvierzig. When talking about your school schedule, you often begin with the time element. However, in German, you then have to invert ich and habe. For example: Was hast du am Mittwoch um 8 Uhr 45? Um 8 Uhr 45 habe ich Physik.

Wir kommunizieren 1 FOKUS KULTUR 11 Produkte: Der Schultag in deutschsprachigen Ländern 11.1 Zusammenhänge c How would you describe your school day to someone from a German-speaking region? How many class periods do you have? What breaks do you have in the day? How does the grading system work?

E

The school day in Germany varies depending on the type of school and the grade level of students. In a Grundschule (elementary school), students in Klassen (grades) 1 and 2 only go to school for four class periods per day. Students in grades 3 and 4 may have five or six periods. There is often a Pause (break) between class periods.

PL

Beginning with die fünfte Klasse (fifth grade) the school day is longer. In the past, school ended around 1 p.m., and students ate lunch at home. More recently, schools have started offering lunch in their Schulkantine (cafeteria). Afternoons are mostly spent in Arbeitsgemeinschaften or AGs (clubs that work on a specific project); students choose AGs according to their interests. Activities include robotics, playing music, and working on the school newspaper. Schools in German-speaking countries use numerals rather than letters for grades. In Germany and Austria, Zeugnisse (report cards) include grades that are based on a scale of 1 through 6, with 1 being sehr gut and 6 ungenügend. Notice the grading scale below. Zensur

Sehr gut (Exemplary)

Gut (Good)

Befriedigend (Satisfactory)

Ausreichend (Adequate)

Mangelhaft (Inadequate)

Ungenügend (Unsatisfactory)

Kapitel 3 | Mein Schulalltag FOKUS KULTUR 24 Produkte: Das deutsche Schulsystem 24.1 Zusammenhänge c How does your school prepare you for life? How many years do students in your region attend school?

E

German-speaking regions have Schulpflicht, which means all students must go to school; homeschooling is illegal. After students finish the Grundschule at age 10, parents (with the help of school staff and their children) make a decision about the next school they will attend. One option is the Gymnasium, which is a collegepreparatory school. It prepares for the Abitur diploma, which is required for Universität (university) admission. Other options for students are the Realschule, Hauptschule, or Gesamtschule.

The Realschule, with its Mittlere Reife diploma, provides a general education that often includes the study of English, family and consumer sciences, and information technology. After the Realschule, students can do special training to enter the workforce or complete the Abitur after more schooling at the Gymnasium. Many students attend the Hauptschule; its curriculum is more general in nature and concludes after the ninth year. Students who successfully complete the Hauptschule can attend a training program or continue their studies at a different school. The Gesamtschule combines all three of these schools to meet the diverse needs of students.

When Dr. Heinrich Hoffmann could not find a good illustrated children’s story for his 3-year-old son’s Christmas present, he created and illustrated the book Der Struwwelpeter. The book contained a series of cautionary tales. In 1845, it was published anonymously under the title Lustige Geschichten und drollige Bilder and became one of the first illustrated children’s stories to be printed in color. One of the stories from Der Struwwelpeter is called "Die Geschichte vom Hanns Guck-in-die-Luft."

28.1 Vor dem Lesen i o k

By looking at the pictures, can you figure out what happens in this story? What modern day applications might Dr. Hoffmann have used if he had written this story today instead of in 1845? Discuss your observations and thoughts with a partner.

What after-school clubs and activities does your school offer? Do many students participate in these offerings? Why are these types of clubs important? How do your school’s activities enrich the students’ experiences at your school?

M

Arbeitsgemeinschaften, also known as AGs, are classes and workshops that take place on weekday afternoons. These elective classes can include most any activity that appeals to young people. They can include sports, painting, photography, musik, robotics, languages, community service initiatives, and much more. Because students only select the classes in which they are interested, AG programs contribute a great deal to a positive community dynamic. Schools also encourage students to form AGs that reflect their interests, so offerings can change from year to year. Many schools organize a Projektwoche at the end of a term; in some cases, this special week highlights the AGs at the school. During the Projektwoche, students introduce the products and activities that individual groups have produced. Bands perform the songs that members have learned, community service groups display and explain how they have helped a marginalized group, theater groups stage plays, soccer teams compete, stop-motion filmmakers organize viewings of their short films, to name a few. In some communities, the Projektwoche brings together multiple schools as well as parent organizations and outside clubs.

Grammatik zusammengefasst 1. D escribing What I Have and Need

Definite and Indefinite Articles in the Accusative Case

E

When you say that you have something (Ich habe einen Bleistift), the item that you possess is called the direct object, and it appears in the accusative case form (which means its article changes). For masculine nouns, the words der and ein change to den and einen; however, die and eine for feminine and das and ein for neuter nouns stay the same. Accusative Case (Direct Object Case)

Der/Ein Bleistift kostet 0,50€.

Ich habe den/einen Bleistift.

Die/Eine Schere kostet 2,50€.

2. Expressing What We Can, May, Must, or Should Do

Using the Modal Verbs können, dürfen, müssen, and sollen

M

Modals make up a very small but important category of verbs. Combined with another verb, for example, what we can play, what we may do, what we must learn, or how we should help. In German, the verbs that we combine with modals are placed at the end of the sentence and always in their infinitive (-en) form. kann

Using the Coordinating Conjunction denn and the Modal Verb mögen

Ich mag Deutsch, denn die Lehrerin ist sehr nett. Ich mag Musik nicht, denn ich kann nicht gut singen. Murat mag Spanisch (lernen).

When we say we like or dislike something (ich mag), we can add more elaboration by saying why. The word denn (because) is used to connect two sentences. The word order of the clause containing denn does not change. Often with the modal verb mögen, if the action word is understood, the infinitive is omitted.
