RENOVATORS RECOGNIZED AT AWARDS NIGHT By Mike Moore

Mike Moore is president of the Manitoba Home Builders’ Association

THERE WAS CAUSE FOR CELEBRATION on May 4 as the Renovation of the Year awards were presented at the Victoria Inn. All of the entries were on display and the crowd spent a great deal of time admiring the outstanding work that had been done by the various renovators in the past year. The best of the best in the renovation industry were being presented to everyone in attendance. This years’ competition featured 31 entries. There were 7 categories for entries; Kitchens, Bathrooms, Exteriors, Additions, Basements, Outdoor Structures and Whole Houses. Within each major category, there were a variety of subcategories grouped according to dollar value in order to keep the competition equitable. Each entry consisted of before and after photos, blueprints and drawings, a detailed description of the work done, design details and any additional information that might contribute to this comprehensive package. Judging was done by a panel of professionally qualified judges who reviewed every entry in every category. This was a detailed and exhaustive process that took a number of days to complete. Scoring was extremely close with many recipients being separated by only a few points. To even qualify for entry, one had to be a Manitoba Home Builders Association RenoMark renovator, the benchmark for excellence. Only the

most professional renovators adhere to the RenoMark standards and Code of Ethics, the highest in the industry. They must provide a detailed written contract including the scope of work for all jobs, offer a minimum two year warranty, carry at least $2 million liability insurance, have coverage for workplace safety and employer’s liability plus only work with subcontractors who carry similar coverage, take out all applicable licenses and permits, maintain a professional level of knowledge of current building codes, permit procedures and technical skills through continuing education and maintain a safe and organized worksite. The Manitoba Home Builders Association prides itself on being the first provincial association in Canada to adopt the RenoMark standards for all of its members.
