FRESH TAKE ON A CLASSIC

Denim got its start as America’s work fabric, but leave it to Derek Lam to infuse a spirit of femininity into his eco-conscious jeans collection. Designer to the stars, including Charlize Theron and Jessica Simpson, Lam doesn’t leave the rest of the gals in the lurch but promises “jeans you can live in.” Any diva knows that jeans are the foundation of a timeless wardrobe. And Derek Lam 10 Crosby offers at least three ways to do denim: the brand’s soft, authentic rigid fabric with lived-in feel; a structured stretch that maintains its shape; and Tencel denim for a soft luxe quality that inspires movement. Get your next pair at Garmany and live like a star.

IT’S FAMILY TRADITION

Little Buca is steeped in the Italian tradition of gathering family for dinners that seldom end with one course. This Little Silver restaurant specializes in the complete fine-dining experience featuring classic Italian and Sicilian fare. For the main course, you might try the owner’s favorite: chicken or veal parm. But first—yes, first—Italian custom calls for antipasti like eggplant rollatini and then pasta, perhaps linguine Nerano. Tradition even played a part in owner Stephania (Raia) Conti’s decision to open Little Buca in August 2022 in the strip mall home of a former seafood restaurant. “My husband (Joseph) and my father have owned restaurants, so they kind of were pushing to do this,” says Conti. At the time, Conti recalls looking for something “easy and close” because the couple are locals with two kids. Her husband also lends a hand to make Little Buca, which means “little hole” in Italian, a big experience for everyone. Says Conti: “It’s definitely a family place.”

Redvanly = RELENTLESS

Imagined by athletics for athletes, Redvanly is not just a modern look but a luxury that never detracts from your sport.

Jersey-born and New Yorkbased Redvanly is committed to performance—so much so that this team of family and friends introduced the first pull-on golf short and pant, maximizing function as well as style. Even if you don’t master the greens, at least you’ll feel like a champ thanks to a free-moving poly/ spandex blend. The Cheese-Joy CONNECTION

No time to travel the globe to serve the crème de la crème at your next gathering? Stop by Fourchette instead for the world’s finest cheese and charcuterie boxes, or wow with a specially prepared, home grazing table. Owners Meredith Hyland and Brahim Sadouni loved the joie de vivre they experienced in Europe and especially Paris so much they brought the lifestyle home and opened a gourmet store in Clinton. “We had access to all the best in Paris, and so we thought we could bring a little bit of that charm to my hometown,” Hyland says. After 10 years of growth, they opened in Beach Haven and then Red Bank. Oh, what one might discover—like Black Bomber, a truckle-style cheddar with an intense English flavor, German blue called Grand Noir or Alpine-style Comté, with a flavor prized in Fourchette.

STILL IN PLAY

In the early ’90s, tennis great Andre Agassi proclaimed that image is everything. It turns out he was right, as the flashy fashions he once wore—as well as the gear, accessories and other equipment used by other players— are immortalized in The Tennis Collection: A History of Iconic Players, Their Rackets, Outfits, and Equipment (Rizzoli, 2024). The new book from Gustavo Fernández showcases more than 150 pieces that grabbed almost as many headlines as the players who used them. See the trendsetting garb, groundbreaking racquets, vintage magazines, artwork and more. The tome is a must-have for all tennis enthusiasts—and for all those who appreciate any sport’s impact on culture.

ASK MR. ETIQUETTE

Johnell Garmany explains how to sail through life without giving offense.

I love my exotic skin belts and dress shoes, but I’m confused about how to properly match them?

—Stumped in Spring Lake

You don’t need to match the accessories exactly. A good tip is to match the materials of the belt and shoe, and focus less on the exact color. So you can pair a suede belt with suede shoes or sneakers to achieve a cohesive look. Now, if you have an exotic skin belt made of crocodile or ostrich, it’s unlikely you have shoes of the same material. In this case, match the colors and/or textures. In all these examples, you will have a harmonious look that elevates your outfit.

Meet the DEVELOPER

Red Bank has found a fan in developer Steven Denholtz, whose recent accomplishments include The Rail at Red Bank, a luxury, multiuse community. “We love Red Bank,” the CEO of Denholtz Properties tells Garmany. “There has not been much activity on the West Side until recently, and we are proud to have contributed to its community growth.” For a job well done with The Rail’s 57 elite housing rentals and 7,500 square feet of curated retail space, Denholtz Properties received Monmouth County’s 2023 Planning Merit Award.

Despite graduating University of Pennsylvania Law School, Denholtz decided to follow in the footsteps of his developer dad, resulting in tremendous growth over four decades for this investment and development company. “What I like most is turning our visions into a reality that contributes to the overall community,” he says. And although he and his wife Lisa live in Oceanport, Red Bank is like a second home, which he prizes for having it all.

On the Red Bank horizon is Southbank at The Navesink with 10 luxury riverfront homes and a downtown office site.

A CATCHALL FOR ALL

It takes time to amass the perfect cigar collection, and plenty of space is dedicated to properly store and preserve each one. Why then would one settle on an ordinary ash tray? Whether you smoke at home or with friends at a cigar bar, choose an extraordinary catchall tray from Protetta to complete the overall experience. Protetta uses Italian-inspired art and design to create beautiful pieces that reflect a cigar smoker’s personal experiences and travels. Each tray is made of porcelain and zinc alloy, ensuring elegance, style and durability—everything this celebrated pastime exudes. Pro tip: When you’re not using it for cigars, use a Protetta catchall to hold your key fob, watch, phone and more! Check out Protetta’s newest styles at protetta.com.

A Wine Collector’s BEST FRIEND

Nothing should diminish your wine-collecting experience, but a “lost” bottle just might. The bigger the collection, the harder it can be to track. After such an experience, Jeff Daiter, a retired physician, reached out to his son Josh, a tech whiz. The result was the 2018 launch of Toronto-based InVintory, which Josh says can find any bottle within seconds. “I think we’ve built a product that is very much wanted and needed in wine collecting,” Jeff tells Garmany Like a good vintage, InVintory is aging to perfection with the recent introduction of Opus for elite users. “We take a replica or image of your cellar and then we have someone on our team recreate that in 3D,” Josh explains. What’s next is the intro of A1 to help with selections and more. (For those uncertain, the Daiters suggest downloading the free app.)

Need help preparing for this wine cellar revolution? InVintory dealer Parker Stansbury recommends white-glove onboarding. “It’s hands off for the client. Everything from start to finish is handled by me,” he says.

Elements of MEN’S STYLE

…in which Johnell Garmany solves your sartorial dilemmas.

Where should men begin when refreshing their wardrobe for spring?

Guys have been getting into sneaker colors beyond black and brown. Colored sneakers are big for the season in whatever shade that matches the rest of their wardrobe.

Zegna’s Triple Stitch is our No. 1 seller— they fit like a glove, and we have them in more than a dozen colors.

What other pieces are you excited about this season?

The new collection of woven tops is outstanding. Piacenza has woven shortsleeve tops with a retro look, and we’re very impressed with the season’s collections from brands like Ferrante and Fedeli.

What should men consider before they wear a double-breasted suit?

Like all fine garments, a double-breasted suit should be tailored correctly. Too many men have ill-fitting double-breasted suits with long, baggy pants. At Garmany, we’ll be sure yours fits you to a T. For a different look—and depending on fabric selection and pocket treatment—the suit also can be “broken up,” and the jacket can be worn with jeans and a monk strap shoe. It’s a great look that’s more casual yet refined.

For the guy who’s always on the go, how should he dress for travel without sacrificing style for comfort? Skip the sweatpants and put on a pair of stretchy travel pants and a knit jersey sportcoat from brands like Maurizio Baldassari. A sportcoat looks great and has a bunch of pockets so you’ll always have a spot to hold your phone, wallet, etc. You’ll always look put-together and not sloppy.

Suits have loosened up on the runways. What does that mean for everyday wear?

While the loose-fit is showing up on runways, it hasn’t yet hit Main Street— or Broad Street. Many guys are getting more comfortable, however, choosing wider jacket lapels and pleated pants.

Dark indigo denim is a fashion staple, but where do colored jeans fit into wardrobe?

denim beyond the usual washes to better match their jackets. Now there are wonderful jeans and five-pocket pants from brands like Tramarossa and Jacob Cohen in different colors, from khaki and white to green and blue, that look amazing whether you’re wearing a sportcoat or just a T-shirt.

How do we celebrate Dad and our newest grad? Do you have gift ideas?

I love the weekender bags from Brunello Cucinelli; I own one myself and get so many compliments. They’re elegant and make a statement, especially when you’re at the airport. Printed short-sleeve shirts

Serge Blanco and our Garmany Private Label are great items, as well as

really goes out of fashion, but this to be all over—literally—as the trend that dominated in 2023 (denim with denim on the bottom) shifts and the world’s favorite fabric covers from shoulders to shins. (You can even double into a triple by adding a pair of this dazzling denim shoes or a denim handbag.) considered a faux pas, pairing denim with suddenly seems like a fresh idea, not just in ’70s-vintage jacket-and-jean combo but with tucked into jeans, denim bustiers barely them or denim tunics flowing over them.

Nice Ice, BABY

As the weather warms up, you’ll be craving colors guaranteed to cool you down: specifically, a slew of pastels so pale and barely-there you’d be tempted to call them icy. Last season’s Barbie pink will give way to a blush that’s subtle as a whisper—the runways were awash in it this year. Other chilly hues to embrace include lilac, mint (think Dorothee Schumacher’s slip dress in mint silk charmeuse) and every imaginable shade of pastel blue. Though they play nice, these are not littlegirl pastels, and you can wear them equally well on the trading floor and the dance floor.

smaller-than-small

LOWLIGHTS

Following in the footsteps of last season’s lowered heels, heights come down even more. That’s welcome news to grown weary of tottering on stilettos (but if you’re a fan and pumps, fear not—they’ll still be around). At are flats (including ballet flats, still going strong), rule the street, along with flip-flops. If you don’t eveningwear, though, you can get the same open look with sultry styles like Christian Louboutin’s Nicol. Also slingbacks—which were all over the runways—as the weather warms. you’ll look sharp in a pointed flat. Penny loafers, with are having their day as well. and a low profile in one comfy package will surely about—and to dance in as well.

PREPPED FOR EVERYTHING

Polish your loafers and dust off your pearls: Preppy style is back in a big way, and it’s not just old school this time. Yes, you’ll find plenty of navy, blue and white, as well as plaid pants and polo shirts, but along with the classics—think crisp white button-up shirts tucked into tailored khakis—you’ll be seeing more modern takes on preppy staples, like oversized sweaters thrown over those collared shirts and polos in luxe, body-caressing fabrics. If you’re a traditionalist, fear not: There’ll be no shortage of navy and forest green striping. But expect to be tempted by polos in black, ladylike oatmeal, pastel pink or black on white, as in Rag & Bone’s white body-hugging polo with black piping, as well as fancifully color-blocked polos or polos dripping with crystals. A bonus: Those Mary Janes you bought last season are still very much in style and pair perfectly with anything prep.

Metal’s MOMENT

This year, holiday shine is set to last long after the holidays themselves have been brightening every on the runway: a pair adding flash to your feet by digging into this to designer trainers from Golden Goose. every iteration from latest shapes, from appropriate!—stars. the season’s chrome chrome manicure, fashion’s most neutral, and accessorizing with it is season’s fast track to polishing up your look.

The Muse

THE EYES HAVE IT

Actress and fashion icon Amanda Seyfried has conviction, versatility—and a look.

There are eyes that grab you, and then there are eyes that hypnotize you— Amanda Seyfried’s do both. High-impact blue and dramatically rounded, they draw the gaze directly to the center of her face and hold it there, which is instrumental for both her iconic look and the care and empathy this actress brings to her performances. She makes a big impression, but it’s her eye for small things that has helped make her indelible.

Over her 20-years-plus career, Seyfried’s roles have ranged from lovable everygirl Sophie in 2008’s Mamma Mia! to silent-film actress Marion Davies in the 2020 biopic Mank, for which she was nominated for a Golden Globe award. She unfailingly brings to the screen an instantly recognizable charisma and a charm, as well as flawless attention to detail. In the 2022 television series The Dropout, Seyfried evoked biotech entrepreneur and convicted fraudster Elizabeth Holmes with eerie precision. For that effortless-looking performance she combined her native gifts with a secret ingredient called hard work, doing lots of research and preparation.

Born and raised in Allentown, Pennsylvania, Seyfried has been working in show business since she was 11. She spent her teenage years playing recurring roles in soap operas, and in 2004 made her big-screen debut in the influential teen comedy Mean Girls. In her many business ventures and partnerships, Seyfried conveys an air of effortless luxury, working with FrenchJapanese luxury skincare house Clé de Peau Beauté, high-fashion designer Miu Miu and Swiss luxury watch makers Jaeger-LeCoultre.

Seyfried’s fashion sensibilities are loyal ones—

she has worked exclusively with stylist Elizabeth Stewart for years. Stewart favors dressing her client in golds, pinks and blacks, with the occasional bold primary color or floral pattern. The silhouettes are dramatic, and they always draw the gaze directly to Seyfried’s piercing eyes. The golden Dior gown she wore at the 2023 Critics Choice Awards draped boldly and was paired with a classic red lip, while her Prada dress for the 2023 Screen Actors Guild Awards was shorter, in a surprising green with an equally surprising narrow train down the back.

Currently, Seyfried lives on a farm in Upstate New York with her two children and her husband, fellow actor Thomas Sadoski. She’s a member of the board of the International Network for Aid, Relief and Assistance, which provides medical help to children in war zones. As to her private sartorial choices, in an interview with Vogue in 2023, Seyfried admitted that in everyday life she lives in sweaters, specifically cashmere ones. There can be drama, after all, even in simple things if they’re classy enough. This talented and focused pro turned just 38 last December— surely there will be many other roles, and other gowns.

British actor Robert Pattinson is going to be famous his way, not yours— and he’ll dress accordingly.

Robert Pattinson’s road to household-name status is one of the stranger ones to have been seen in Hollywood in recent decades. Born in London in 1986 and encouraged by his father at 13 to join a theater club to overcome shyness, he made his film debut in 2005’s Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire . After spending 2008 to 2012 as a staple in any teenaged girl’s poster collection with his portrayal of brooding vampire Edward Cullen in the Twilight film series, Pattinson seemed to vanish from the spotlight as he focused on smaller parts in smaller movies and immersed himself firmly in the arthouse.

He collaborated twice with legendary horror director David Cronenberg, bringing critical recognition to both of them but not much mainstream attention, and once with cinema giant Werner Herzog. He played niche roles in biopics and strange parts in historical dramas.

It wasn’t until 2017 that Pattinson popped up as a boldface name again, starring in the crime thriller Good Time directed by the then-rising Safdie brothers, who would win an Independent Spirit Award for their masterpiece Uncut Gems two years later. After that, he took the lead role in the highly acclaimed A24 movie The Lighthouse, directed by

Robert Eggers, and then in the dense, hypnotic Tenet, directed by Christopher Nolan. At last, in 2022, he stepped into one of the most iconic roles an actor can try: Bruce Wayne and his vigilante alter ego Batman, in Matt Reeves’s take on the caped crusader, The Batman, which cemented Pattinson’s place back among Hollywood’s must-watch actors. Even as he embraces the limelight again, Pattinson’s style has remained eccentric, his tastes eclectic and his personality enigmatic. (Look how we used three “e——c” adjectives and didn’t even say “erotic”—though Pattinson, who is engaged to English actress-singer-songwriter Suki Waterhouse, was once called by Vanity Fair “the most handsome man in the world.”) Whether it’s tossing a suit jacket over a track suit at the 2019 “High Life” premiere or walking through the 2018’s New York Film Festival in an outfit that gave a nod to British private-school uniforms, this actor pushes expectations every time he’s in front of a camera. He mixes street clothes with sleek high fashion, the highly tailored with the loose and baggy, and keeps it all in the same dark, neutral palette—an unconscious hommage, perhaps, to his time spent playing teenage vampires and brooding superheroes alike.

Tesla’s long-awaited Cybertruck puts a charge in the electric pickup industry.

Remember when the original “Cybertruck vs. Ford F-150” video went viral five years ago? That was when Tesla CEO Elon Musk first convinced us that his new double-take-worthy electric truck could outmuscle the toughest gas-powered pickup. But thanks to the pandemic and the ensuing supply-chain delays, mass production of the eye-popping vehicle was put on hold—until now. The first buyers took delivery of their long-awaited Cybertrucks late last year, and now intrigued consumers are lining up to get their hands on one.

Though Ford as well as upstart companies like Rivian have

already hit the market with their electric pickups, Tesla believes the Cybertruck was worth the wait. There are two trims offered for 2024: a 600-horsepower, dual-motor, all-wheel-drive model and the mighty Cyberbeast, an 845-horsepower, tri-motor truck. Each comes with a nearly dent- and bullet-proof body, and engineers claim the windows are unbreakable. They also suggest that the most powerful version has a range of about 340 miles on full charge and a zeroto-60 acceleration of 2.6 seconds. Performance numbers, of course, are expected from Tesla, whose sedans and sport models have been

Despite its unique shape and styling, the Tesla Cybertruck falls into the pick-up class. Beneath the rear panel is a flatbed with enough space for luggage, golf bags, camping gear and much more!

long celebrated in the industry for their speed and efficiency.

The interior design also lives up to the Tesla name. Instead of a dashboard full of gauges, buttons and levers, the minimalistic cabin has a horizontally mounted 18.5-inch touchscreen where all controls and displays appear. Those in the back (the truck seats up to six passengers) have access to a 9.4-inch touchscreen for adjusting climate and entertainment settings.

But how does this vehicle compare with classic pickups? Indeed, the Cybertruck falls into the category despite its unique shape and

angles, which make it look like it’s straight out of a 1980s sci-fi film. Beneath the retractable rear panel is a 6-by-4-foot flatbed that hauls everything from luggage to golf bags to camping gear. Have a small boat? This Tesla can tow about 11,000 pounds, whereas Ford’s electric trucks reportedly max out at 8,500 pounds. If hitching a trailer or driving on rugged terrain isn’t a concern, you can wait for the 2025 model year, when Tesla expects to introduce a rear-wheel-drive version of the Cybertruck.

The 2024 Cybertruck starts at around $80K.

An Artist By NATURE

The ever-creative Paula Flores was born in Tijuana and lives in Vienna, but the countryside keeps calling.

Though she was born and raised in the industrial city of Tijuana, Mexico, abstract and contemporary artist Paula Flores discovered nature at an early age—she had grandparents.

“Both of my paternal grandparents grew up with nature,” Flores recalls. “My grandmother was a deep believer in the magic and secrets in nature.”

With a diversity of materials (some found at Mexican markets), bold splashes of color and limitless imagination, she strives to convey a message about nature: “We are all interconnected in the most profound ways…with the whole cosmos.”

Though her grandparents’ influence went a long way, she tells Garmany that connecting with nature is still “the biggest challenge” for a city dweller like her and “one of the main things that I explore in my artwork.” Not only nature, but Mayan murals, cave paintings and ancient Egyptian art inspire this current Vienna resident and mother of a 3-year-old. (Just don’t ask her her own age.)

Flores’s early ambitions ran the gamut, but her dad recommended art because of her desire to express and create constantly, which she says is the only way she can live. Her accomplishments include many solo exhibits, such as at the Red Carpet Showroom Volkstheater in Vienna, group shows from Guadalupe to Munich, and a collection at the Museum of Contemporary Art in San Diego.

In the future, Flores envisions a studio outside the city, and one of her dreams is to raise sheep and harvest wool—a medium that already stirs her creativity. Whether it’s cooking, exploring traditional markets or visiting the family ranch in Tecate, Mexico, Flores finds that all her pursuits “end up feeding my creative process,” making fans wonder what’s next.

Celebrations are central to culture in Tijuana, Mexico, where artist Paula Flores grew up—she’s even decided that “to celebrate is to love.” Joyful with color, Party Time is a 2022 abstract that memorializes the festive spirit with acrylic and enamel.

A Great Course RETURNS

Anyone who played Long Island’s legendary Lido knows that nothing will ever be the same—except a new layout in Wisconsin. By Everett Potter

It’s a true story with a touch of fable. In 1917, C.B. Macdonald, the father of American golf course architecture, completed a course by the ocean on Long Island that many regarded as the greatest ever built. A masterwork of artistry and engineering, the Lido was the outgrowth of creative earth moving that transformed a flat swath of terrain into a wondrous, rumpled playground. Its greens were enormous. Its bunkers were expansive and beguiling. Its fairways heaved and fell with brows and hollows. Many of its holes were what are known as templates, iconic designs that have been mimicked at myriad properties around the world.

For years, the Lido flourished. But eventually, smacked by stiff financial headwinds after World War II, the course shuttered. Its acreage was repurposed as a naval base. Closing, though, did little to dim the Lido’s reputation. If anything, absence bolstered its renown. As decades passed, the course acquired a near-mythic aura, becoming golf’s version of the lost city of Atlantis. Golf buffs spoke of it in reverent tones.

Some became so giddy they wondered aloud: What if the Lido could be recreated?

Get this: It has been.

Late last year, the first nine of 18 holes opened on a faithful reproduction of the Lido. The full routing will be ready for play this spring. The new course is not a mere homage to the original; it’s an exacting replica. Every wrinkle of the layout has been recreated to within inches of the Macdonald design. There’s one big difference, though. The reborn Lido is not on Long Island. It’s situated in the sand barrens in the center of Wisconsin.

Resurrecting the Lido had been a group effort, led by Michael and Chris Keiser, siblings with an impeccable golf pedigree. Their father, Mike Keiser, developed Bandon Dunes on the southern coast of Oregon, a pioneering resort that awakened the golf industry to a Field of Dreams approach; it proved that if you built courses in re-

mote locations, people would come, provided that the golf was great.

Following in their father’s footsteps, the Keiser brothers became golf developers, devoted to building the kind of classic courses that purists are willing to travel far to play.

No course fits that profile better than the Lido, which sits in the small town of Nekoosa, roughly two-and-half hours from Milwaukee.

“If this were just a very nice golf course lost to history, we’d have no interest in rebuilding it,” Michael Keiser has said of the project. “But the Lido was truly exceptional. Therefore, anything we build that’s not in that upper echelon, we can only blame ourselves.”

To help give the Lido its new Midwest incarnation, the Keisers hired the celebrated architect Tom Doak, whose designs have peppered World Top 100 lists for decades. Doak, in turn, relied on detailed historical documentation of the Lido, including 3D computer models based on photographs and other renderings.

A round at the Lido will double as a kind of trip through time, allowing golfers to experience the beauty and strategic challenges of a masterpiece conceived more than a century ago. Like its defunct doppelgänger, the reborn Lido will test players with such template holes as the Biarritz, a long par-3 defined by a deep gully running horizontally through its green. It will also feature an Eden hole, a short par-3 with a teardrop-shaped green guarded jealously by bunkers; a par-4 known as an Alps hole for the mountainous rise that creates a blind approach shot; and a punchbowl par-4 with a concave green ringed by dunes. No detail has been overlooked. The routing even has been oriented so that golfers will face the same prevailing winds they would have faced on Long Island.

The Lido sits across the road from Sand Valley, a popular golf resort developed by the Keiser brothers, and though it will operate as a private course, limited tee times will be set aside for resort guests.

Be forewarned: Those slots will be snatched up fast.

LA VIDA YOGA Fitness

While modern disciplines have focused on physical and mental strength, Brahma yoga puts the spirit back in the center of the ancient practice.

Have you ever been in a rush to get to yoga class, a session with the city’s top instructor that’s so popular there’s a waiting list to join? The practice is an equalizer for our on-the-go lifestyles, so we’d do almost anything for a spot in the class. It’s all well and good, of course, as yoga has gained global recognition for its emphasis on meditation and relaxation. But some believe the ancient discipline has lost its way because of that popularity —hence the introduction of Brahma yoga.

Developed by author and worldrenowned yoga master Leo Lourdes, Brahma yoga seeks to return the practice to its Indian origins, in which the spirit was the focal point rather than

the physical or mental self. “Brahma yoga seeks to reunite us through our practice to our place, presence and purpose in this cosmos,” Lourdes writes in his latest book, A World of Yoga: 700 Asanas for Mindfulness and Well-Being (Rizzoli New York, 2023) “Brahma yoga activates the vitality that thrives through the flow of energy, Asanas, movement, mantras and mudras. It reminds and awakens in each of us the yogic quest of enlightenment that leads to bliss, balance,

creativity, love, acceptance and freedom.”

Brahma yoga incorporates 700 asanas, or postures, that arrange the body into a variety of positions. These poses each stem from two general shapes—circles and triangles—and they promote the flow of oxygenated blood throughout the body. The belief is, according to Lourdes, that syncing the body’s systems (nervous, respiratory, cardiovascular and musculoskeletal, for instance) promotes homeostasis and thus allows a person to function properly.

Lourdes introduces us to Brahma yoga in his tome. Yogis can follow one of a dozen sequences, all of which are meant to provide toning and flexibility, rest and rejuvenation, mindfulness and realization while simultaneously transforming mind, body and spirit.

Women At The HELM

Winemaking in Northern California isn’t the exclusive province of men, and actually hasn’t been for quite some time.

Just as you can’t judge a book by its cover, you can only tell so much about a wine from its label. Scanning the fine print, you may read about the vintage and the varietal, but you’ll miss a thread in the wine’s origin story—you won’t learn about the people behind it. In Northern California, many of those people happen to be women. That’s not a new development, but it’s one that is finally getting noticed.

“When I was getting started, there were a number of women doing amazing things in wine,” Hilary Sjolund says. “If you weren’t in the industry, you may not have heard about them because they didn’t always get the attention they deserved. But they were inspiring figures to people like me.”

Sjolund, 43, is associate winemaker at Aperture Cellars, an acclaimed property in the Anderson Valley of Sonoma County that is known for its focus on Bordeaux varietals. She took the job in 2019, following a 13-year stint as a winemaker and wine consultant in the Pacific Northwest, in a move that amounted to a California homecoming. Born and raised in Sonoma, Sjolund spent much of her childhood shuttling through the Anderson Valley, riding to and from her parents’ grocery store on the Mendocino Coast. In those days, many women, including Stacy Clark of Pine Ridge Vineyards in Napa, were playing influential roles in the industry. But Sjolund never considered making a life in wine until her first year at college, at U.C. Davis, when she took her first elective: “Introduction to Wine Making”.

“The part that caught my eye was ‘educational tastings included,’”

Sjolund says. “And I thought, ‘Wow. Mom and Dad are going to pay for me to drink in college!’”

In truth, she’d always been into science, so winemaking tapped a lifelong interest. The more she learned, the more she came to appreciate the way wine melded science with art, a mix of creativity and laboratory precision that allowed for an active life in the outdoors. She was hooked.

Sjolund joined Aperture as the estate was getting ready to unveil a new winemaking facility for its inaugural vintage. She now has a hand in an array of celebrated wines in a portfolio of terroir-driven blends and singlevineyard releases. She also works on Aperture’s sister label, Devil Proof Vineyards, which has received a wealth of accolades, including the first-ever 100-point score for a Malbec from the Alexander Valley.

In Northern California as elsewhere, winemaking positions are still held predominantly by men. But gone are the days when women’s vital contributions went widely ignored. At the historic Far Niente Winery in neighboring Napa, Sjolund’s winemaking counterpart, Nicole Marchesi, has been running the show since 2009, overseeing the production of one of the valley’s most iconic Chardonnays, made without malolactic fermentation to yield wines of unparalleled freshness and complexity that pair wonderfully with food and improve with age.

In Lodi, meanwhile, Marissa Lange has been a driving force behind the growth and evolution of pioneering LangeTwins Family Winery and

90 GARMANY SPRING/SUMMER 2024 Grape

Vineyards. Now a fifth-generation agricultural family, the Langes entered viniculture in the 1970s, selling their grapes and leaving the winemaking to others. Marissa’s childhood was beautifully bucolic. But when she went off to college in the 1990s, she figured she was leaving California for good.

“As a 17-year-old I knew two things,” Lange says. “I knew I wasn’t going to work in wine. And I knew I wasn’t coming back to Lodi.” Fast-forward to the present. Lange has been back in California for nearly 20 years, guiding the family business in exciting new directions. In 2005, with Marissa leading a collaborative effort, the Langes built their own winery, which today produces wines from grapes in four Lodi appellations, including single-vineyard releases that are uniquely expressive of their surrounds. Central to the operation is sustainability. LangeTwins generates 55 percent of the energy it uses, drawing its water from a state-of-the-art irrigation system designed to maximize conservation.

An early adopter of solar power, LangeTwins has kept a focus on the future. The foundations of the winery were built to accommodate fuel cells, and 70 acres of family land have been set aside for an experiment in regenerative farming, in which crops are rotated to ensure the long-term health of the soil.

“A generation ago, women in the wine industry were mostly in marketing and public relations,” Lange says. “Now the majority of my winemaking team is female. And you see women in a wide diversity of roles.”

DON’T LOOK SO TIRED

Bags under your eyes tell the world you’ve been up all night—even when you haven’t.

Along with fine lines and wrinkles, under-eye bags are among the most common skincare concerns that come with age. They’re often caused by a weakening in the muscles that support the eyelid, or by a simple gathering of fluid. Fortunately, this swelling is very rarely a sign of a more serious medical concern, but that doesn’t mean you need to accept the change. Here are options for packing up those under-eye bags and shipping them off for good.

Changed habits

One of the quickest ways to de-puff in general is to cut back on salt. High-sodium diets cause you to retain more water and therefore lead to swelling. To further prevent this fluid retention, you might also experiment with adding an extra pillow when you sleep—a slight incline can reduce fluid accumulation in your face. Be aware of your seasonal allergies and make an effort to remove allergens where you can, as inflammation and congestion from allergies can make eye bags worse. Hay fever, dust and household pets are all common causes of eye swelling and irritation. A habit to get into may be the trendy “face yoga,” which recommends light massaging and palpating of problem areas to encourage fluid movement and blood flow. And, as always, sufficient sleep is your ally— just as common wisdom suggests, eye bags can be exacerbated by simple fatigue.

Topicals

If you’re looking for a quick solution, something as simple as a cool compress will do wonders in the short term. For more lasting results, there is a wealth of skincare research that aims specifically to firm and smooth the under-eye area. Some experts’ go-to ingredient for this is caffeine. An effective vasoconstrictor, caffeine constricts blood vessels, which in turn reduces fluid accumulation. Many eye creams are packed full of caffeine for this reason, but you can pick up concentrated serums that claim faster results. Anti-aging staple retinol is also a common solution for an eye-bag problem, as are the current rising stars of the skincare world, peptides. Both of these ingredients encourage collagen production, which tightens and smooths skin, and are infused in many products you can pick up on your own time.

Injectables

The stigma around fillers has been waning in recent years, as it should—these procedures are safe, quick, effective and can be reversed if the patient isn’t happy with the results. Dermal fillers involve a medical professional injecting filler material, usually jelly-like hyaluronic acid, under the skin. In the case of under-eye bags, this method smooths and fills out the hollow where fluid gathers. The results of fillers are immediate but not permanent; effects last from six to 12 months, then touch-ups are required. Fillers also need very little recovery time.

As with any cosmetic medical procedures, injectable fillers are not free from risk, but nearly all of these can be mitigated as long as you choose an experienced, licensed professional.

Surgery

If touch-ups don’t sound appealing to you, there is also a permanent surgical solution to under-eye bags. A lower eyelid lift, also called a blepharoplasty, involves surgically removing excess fat, muscle and skin to redefine the shape of the eye. This is an invasive surgery that can take several hours, with a recovery period of at least 10 to 14 days. Before you opt for an operation, it is important to consult with your primary-care doctor and be aware of your own eye health, including any problems with vision, tear production or glaucoma. However, a blepharoplasty can totally banish the drooping and puffiness that cause eye bags.

Pets Welcome

We’re just as pet friendly as we are kid friendly. A pet is a member of the family, and we want to make all your family members feel at home.

Refunds Happen

While most stores dread discussing their return policy, we can sum up ours in three words: No questions asked. All we do request is that you bring your purchase back within 31 days.

Garmany Gift Cards: A Flattering Fit

A Garmany Gift Card guarantees your gift will be the perfect style, size and color. Purchase a gift card in the store or online in any denomination you choose for a remembrance that will dazzle any lucky recipient.

Made-To-Measure Service

As talented as a local tailor may be, he can only provide the limited patterns and materials on hand. At Garmany, our Made-to-Measure service takes advantage of the relationships we have established with Italian manufacturers to deliver a suit that’s smart and sexy. You won’t find a better short-term plan to look your best.

Expertise

A central part of the Garmany Experience is superlative service in a relaxed atmosphere. If you want to browse in private, you’re more than welcome. When you need expert, individual attention, you’ll get it—instantly and for as long as you want. Our knowledgeable staff is well versed in all of the brands we carry, the trends of the season and how to fit every body type. They stand ready to advise you on all matters of wardrobe and accessories.

Shoeshine Service

Garmany is one of the few places left where you can still get a meticulous hand shine. In just a few minutes, we’ll have your shoes looking lustrous, and you’ll feel ready to take on the world.

49 Private Changing Rooms

No matter where you are in Garmany, you’re only a few paces away from a clean, comfortable changing room. We never planned on 49, but after we located them in the places we knew would be most convenient, that’s how it worked out.

MORE THAN JUST A STORE

Just as our designers take great pride in the clothing that bears their name, we are extremely proud of the amenities and services that make shopping at Garmany a safe and pleasurable experience. Our philosophy is that firstclass customers deserve first-class care from the moment they walk through our doors. We aim to transcend the traditional retail customer relationship, creating instead a bond that exceeds expectations. Please take advantage of any and all of the services described here as part of your Garmany experience. Visit us at 121 Broad St., Red Bank, NJ, or call us at 732.576.8500.

Tailor Shop

Buttons loosen. Zippers break. Garments tear. Clothing emergencies can happen to anyone and at any time. If they happen to your Garmany-purchased item—or even if your piece needs routine repair— bring it in and let our tailor shop take a look. We’ll be happy to perform minor alterations and get you back in your jacket, sweater, shirt or pants as soon as possible.

Shopping By Appointment

If you’re not ready for in-person shopping—or if our store hours don’t fit your schedule, call us. If you’re a morning person who finds 7 a.m. the ideal time for your Garmany Experience, we will arrange to be here. Does the commute put you on the platform at 9 p.m.? No problem. Shopping by appointment allows us to give you the personal attention and shopping time you need, when your schedule permits.

Lounge And Bar

Like any gracious host, we always offer our guests something to drink. Whether you’re shopping in firstfloor menswear or browsing the women’s collections upstairs, you’ll find a spot to relax, reflect and enjoy coffee, espresso, cappuccino or a cool drink. If the notion strikes you for something more bracing, we have wine, beer and a full bar.

Movie Theater

We encourage you to bring the younger set to Garmany, and we attend to them as we would any other family members. Our second-floor movie theater is a particular hit with kids. With our theater seating, a massive screen, high-def picture and awesome sound system, your kids can enjoy a variety of titles from our film library.
