Hit the notes and learn the ropes Whether you are struggling to play the drums or are a master at the double bass, there’s a place for musicians of all skill levels and abilities at Architekt Music, which opened about a year ago in Glen Rock (their original location is in Butler). Consider it part studio and part school. On any given day, music students might fill a room that shares a wall with a recording studio featuring one of Architekt’s professional clients. “The studio clients love seeing the students because they were there at one point in their life,” owner Kurt Wubbenhorst has said. All lesson rooms are equipped with pianos, high-tech guitar and bass rigs and state-ofthe-art drum kits. Students can also sign up for one of Architekt’s programs like the rock ensemble (join a rock band!) or the recording techniques class. This isn’t the music class you dreaded in high school—Architekt offers the education and ongoing jam session that everyone loves.

Help for stinky shoes When you’re hot in the socks, foot sweat and odor can be an issue. Well, we found a simple solution: Gran’s Remedy, made by Tenafly-based Honest Trading Corp., is a blend of powders that combats the five bacteria and fungi known to cause smelly feet and footwear. Just sprinkle some in your shoes, and let the magic begin. In a week’s time, your loafers and sneakers will smell fresh and clean. “I have a pair of running shoes that always make my feet sweat,” says BERGEN Associate Editor Darius Amos. “When I use Gran’s, I have nothing to worry about when I take off my sneakers.”

The write stuff Reading can take you to faraway places—and also very near ones. These recently published volumes have local ties, having been written by Bergen County authors. Pick up a copy and check out what your neighbors are up to:

In for a thrill ride? Edgewater’s Jacqueline Simon Gunn recently published Circle of Trust, the second installment of the Close Enough to Kill triology. The novel follows a team of detectives as it tries to solve the murder of a radio psychologist. Gunn, who is a clinical psychologist in Manhattan, is currently working on the final book of her trilogy.

If activity books are your cup of tea, pick up a copy of Alecia Blake’s Color In Fashion: A Stylish Adult Coloring Book. Adult coloring isn’t just a current trend—research shows that it can help a person improve coordination, fine motor skills and memory. Blake, a Park Ridge resident and fashion illustrator, filled her book with 30 fashion prints and patterns (city scenes, paisley and florals, butterflies, etc.) to be colored.

Many wouldn’t guess that Carlstadt resident Vito Quattrocchi is also a writing veteran—his most recent crime drama, The Rise and Fall of the Sewer King, is his 14th book. The literary piece is based on various trips to Sicily and encounters with known members of the Mafia. When he’s not writing, Quattrocchi is cutting hair at his Carlstadt barbershop, aptly named Vito’s.
