STARSPANGLED SPREAD An Independence Day gathering can be much more
than burgers, hot dogs and a cooler of ice cream. Why not let America’s 250th anniversary this year be the perfect excuse to take a more considered approach—one that still feels relaxed and inviting? “I plan everything around the flag,” says entertaining expert Stephanie Nass in her book Swing By! Entertaining Recipes and the New Art of Gathering. “It goes without saying that this fete is red, white and blue.” Imagine layered textures: crisp linens, navy accents and subtle pops of red in fresh flowers or napkins. “Setting your table for the occasion will always elevate any occasion, and the Fourth of July is no exception,” says event planner Angela Yu Bae of Fort Lee’s Angi & Co. “Coordinate your serving pieces, flatware and thematic centerpieces. Whether based on colors, stars, stripes or any other coordinated element, your décor will feel thoughtfully curated. If you’re planning something a bit more formal, you can set each place setting with a printed menu or trivia game.” BERGENMAG.COM

This July 4th, trade the expected for a beautifully styled celebration full of summer flavor.
For the menu, start with grab-and-go bites like sliders, and avoid heavy meats or pasta and potato salads that are weighed down with mayo. Next, add a signature dish like grilled shrimp skewers with garlic, citrus and herbs or try caprese-style skewers with fresh heirloom tomatoes, mozzarella and basil. Don’t let a cooler of canned beverages serve as the only drink option. “Setting up a beverage station with a custom printed bar menu is always helpful so guests know what is available,” Bae says. “You can also enhance your offerings by including custom cocktails and mocktails to bring some fun to your bar menu. Get creative with custom drink names like ‘Freedom Spritz’ or ‘Independence Sparkler’.” Keep dessert simple but styled: fresh fruit, lemon bars or brownie bites with berries and whipped cream. Ultimately, a memorable Fourth of July party isn’t about abandoning tradition—it’s about reimagining it. With a few thoughtful upgrades (check out Nass’s décor and flavors on the following pages), your celebration can feel as special as the occasion itself.
