SEA IT NOW Five aquariums within driving distance invite you to investigate the ocean and its secrets.
Some hot summer days demand the beach, the sun and a view of the ocean. But others, perhaps even hotter, cry out for a darkened, air-conditioned space indoors—and a more “up close and personal” look at the ocean’s denizens. That means aquariums, a cool way to explore the sea’s mysteries without getting burned or even sandy. Luckily, we live within an easy drive of five:

THE NEW YORK AQUARIUM BROOKLYN, N.Y.
About an hour from Bergen, this oldest continually operating aquarium in the United States showcases 266 species of aquatic wildlife. The outdoor Sea Cliffs exhibit presents playful sea otters, sea lions, harbor seals and penguins (and lets you breathe in some ocean air) while, back inside, Ocean Wonders brings sharks, rays and sea turtles up close (safely behind glass). No visit here is complete without catching a demonstration at the Aquatheater, where sea lions and their trainers take center stage to flip, jump and wave at the crowd (using a process the aquarium calls “scanning,” in which the animals perform natural behaviors on cue for rewards, staying safe in the process). There’s also a section dedicated to invertebrates such as jellyfish and a “playquarium” designed with young ones in mind and complete with a “touch tank.” What’s nearby. The aquarium is on the Coney Island boardwalk; stepping outside puts you in the middle of one of NYC’s iconic summertime destinations. Walk to Luna Park, home of the Coney Island Cyclone, the wooden roller coaster that’s an official New York City landmark listed in the National Register of Historic Places. The park also has classic carnival rides and games, restaurants with all the fair food you could want (funnel cake, ice cream, hot dogs) and places to pick up souvenirs. Sports lovers may want to stop by Maimonides Park, a minor league baseball stadium where the Brooklyn Cyclones play. Also, of course, you’re steps away from three miles of sandy beach. JENKINSON’S AQUARIUM POINT PLEASANT BEACH, N.J.
Situated on one of our state’s most familyfriendly boardwalks, this aquarium can be reached with an hour-and-a-half car ride. It’s marking its 35th anniversary this year and celebrating with style all year long, so now’s a great time to stop by. See a sprawling, colorful coral reef exhibit filled with tropical fish, a giant tank where sand tiger sharks, nurse sharks, blacktip reef sharks and several types of rays swim in hypnotic circles or visit the playful seals. Among the biggest draws to this spot are the African penguins, which frolic and play in the water and on dry land. (Jenkinson’s offers a special “penguin encounter” experience, where you can see one close up and watch how the keepers work with these animals every day.) There’s just been a major renovation of the top floor—it’s open for you to visit Wally the twotoed sloth and other rainforest animals. What’s nearby. There’s lots to do at Jenkinson’s Boardwalk, whether you’re craving a classic beach day, heart-pounding thrills or something to satisfy the sweet tooth. Just a few steps away is a beautiful Jersey Shore coastline where you can take a dip, or a full amusement park with rides and roller coasters. If you’re craving some competition, you can play a round at one of two mini golf courses (one with a replica lighthouse, one shipwreck themed), stop by the batting cages or challenge your crew to air hockey or Skee-Ball. The boardwalk also features the Adventure Lookout Ropes Course, where you can climb into the sky (with the safety of a harness) and beat the obstacle course. Want something a bit more sit-down for dinner? A short drive away is the Wharfside Seafood & Patio Bar, whose menu includes whole local lobster, oysters and stuffed flounder, done to perfection.
