The classically styled 2001 Chateauneuf du Pape has plenty of the telltale kirsch and sweet spice notes that always seem to be present in Avril's wines. Showing more mature notes of truffle, olive, licorice and garrigue as it sat in the glass, it's medium to fullbodied, elegant and balanced, with a great texture and finish. 94 WS 95 WA CUVÉE DU VATICAN CHÂTEAUNEUF-DU-PAPE 2000 (2) Châteauneuf-du-Pape. 10 bts.

DOMAINE DU VIEUX TÉLÉGRAPHE CHÂTEAUNEUF-DU-PAPE LA CRAU 2008 (2) Châteauneuf-du-Pape.

The 2007 Barolo Brunate is a gorgeous, refined wine. An expressive, open bouquet melds into dark, sensual fruit. The Brunate possesses gorgeous delineation, wonderful inner perfume and polished tannins that frame the majestic finish. In this vintage the French oak is also exceptionally well-balanced. The freshness, vibrancy and overall sense of harmony elevate the Brunate into the top tier of 2007 Baroli. This beautiful, aristocratic Barolo is the finest young wine I have tasted from Cere!o in a long time. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2032. 96 WA

98 95 E. GUIGAL CÔTE-RÔTIE LA LANDONNE 2003 (1) Rhône. The 2003 Cote Rotie la Landonne continues to blow me away every time I taste it and it's a desert island wine for me. One of the stars of this extreme vintage, it offers sensational levels of fruit and decadence, perfumed, intense aromatics, beautiful freshness and a to-die-for texture and finish. Still youthful, with masses of sweet tannin, it's nevertheless a a heavenly drink today. Issue Date: September 2015 100 WA E. GUIGAL CÔTE-RÔTIE LA TURQUE 2003 (1) Rhône. I’ve always loved the 2003s from the Guigal family and the 2003 Cote Rotie la Turque has yet to ever disappoint. An incredible perfume of smoked herbs, charred meats, violets, licorice and blackcurrants gives way to a huge, unctuous, powerful Cote Rotie that has masses of ripe, sweet tannin, full-bodied richness and a finish that just won’t quit. Enjoy this heavenly elixir over the coming 2-3 decades. Issue Date: December 2016 100 WA E. GUIGAL CÔTE-RÔTIE LA TURQUE 2007 (1) Rhône. The 2007 Cote Rotie la Turque is an elegant, seamless example of this cuvee that offers sensational notes of smoked meats, truffles, blackberries and cassis, as well as a hint of tapenade with time in the glass. It has a rich, unctuous and fullbodied profile on the palate, with sweet, sweet tannin and an u!erly seamless texture that makes it go down way too easy. TENUTA DELL'ORNELLAIA 2009 (1) Tuscany. TENUTA SAN GUIDO SASSICAIA 2007 (1) Tuscany. The 2007 Sassicaia (Cabernet Sauvignon) explodes onto the palate with masses of rich, opulent fruit that caress the palate with gorgeous length and a seamless beauty that is hard to fully capture. Dark wild cherries, plums, spices, minerals and herbs develop in the glass. This is an especially bold, perhaps slightly uncharacteristic Sassicaia in its extroverted personality, but it is beautiful all the same. The inner perfume and sweetness carries through the long finish, where the sheer weight and glycerol of the fruit leaves a lasting impression. The 2007 is more than a worthy follow-up to the profound 2006. While it may lack that wine’s freshness, structure and potential longevity, the 2007 is immensely appealing today, and should drink beautifully pre!y much out of the gate. That said, Sassicaia is always the most restrained of Bolgheri’s heavy hi!ers. This is a superb effort from Tenuta San Guido. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2037. 93 WS 95 WA 2 bts.

A remarkable vintage for Pichon Longueville Baron, 1990 is one of this estate’s two or three finest wines made in the last 40 years. Still inky/blue/purpletinged to the rim, it reveals an extraordinary bouquet of charcoal, incense, creme de cassis, blue and black fruits, and a hint of licorice as well as an impressively long finish. While drinkable, its evolution is extremely slow, and I would not be surprised to see it last another two decades or more. Drink 2009 -2029 97 WA 6 bts. per lot $1,700 - $2,100

CHÂTEAU DUCRU-BEAUCAILLOU 1996 (1) St. Julien. 2ième Cru Classé The 1996 is long, with a deep mid-palate. It also reveals tannin in the finish. This wine is remarkable. It is muscular, concentrated, and classic. Bo!led in late June, 1998, it exhibits a saturated ruby/purple color, as well as a knock-out nose of minerals, licorice, cassis, and an unmistakable lead pencil smell that I o"en associate with top vintages of LafiteRothschild. It is sweet and full-bodied, yet unbelievably rich with no sense of heaviness or flabbiness. The wine possesses high tannin, but it is extremely ripe, and the sweetness of the black currant, spice-tinged Cabernet Sauvignon fruit is pronounced. This profound, backward DucruBeaucaillou is a must purchase. It will be fascinating for readers who own the 1996 to follow the evolution of this exceptional vintage. The 2007 is finally entering its drinking plateau. It has a deep, quite lucid, dark garnet color. The nose is fresh and well defined. The palate is mediumbodied with fine tannin. It feels a!ractively saline, fresh and crisp, though not angular. Again, it is the focus and detail that enhances this vibrant Château Latour and its keen line of acidity lends it the freshness to become just about drinkable. Tasted July 2016. The spectacular 2003 Pontet Canet is still incredibly young and vigorous. This full-bodied classic boasts a dense purple color as well as a superb nose of graphite, creme de cassis, forest floor, licorice and a hint of truffles, low acidity, and extravagant richness. Most of the tannins have been resolved in this superstar of the vintage. It should continue to drink well for 10-15+ years. A candidate for the wine of the vintage, the 2007 Lafite Rothschild (84% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot, and 1% Petit Verdot) reveals classic Lafite aromas of graphite, unsmoked cigar tobacco, black currants, cherries, and a hint of truffles. The complex aromatics are followed by a round, medium to fullbodied wine with silky tannins, an overall subtle smoky component, and a rich, round, generous, plump finish. The wine’s dense, medium to full-bodied flavors are surprisingly evolved, with so! tannins, an ample, generous mouthfeel, and an endearing texture. DOMAINE DE MARCOUX CHÂTEAUNEUF-DUPAPE VIEILLES VIGNES 2003 Châteauneuf-du-Pape.

LA FERME DU MONT CHÂTEAUNEUF-DU-PAPE CÔTES CAPELAN 2010 Châteauneuf-du-Pape.

This wine is built from the back forward, meaning there is huge tannin and structure, so at first the wine seems somewhat backward, but with air, the extraordinary perfume of lilacs, sweet licorice, blackberry liqueur, and kirsch soar from the glass. There are even hints of roasted meats, smoked herbs, and underbrush as well as truffles. The wine has superb concentration, remarkable intensity, fullbodied flavors, sweetness, opulence, and a multilayered palate and finish that literally have to be tasted to be believed. This wine spent 100% of its time in tank and is a modern-day monument to Chateauneuf du Pape, and the glories of the old vines of this appellation. Drink: 2007-2027 95 WS 99 WA

The prodigious 2010 Chateauneuf du Pape Cotes Capelan boasts abundant notes of acacia flowers interwoven with blackberries, black raspberries, licorice, incense and a touch of graphite. The wine hits the palate with tremendous authority, impressive purity, a skyscraper-like texture and a full-bodied, layered finish that lasts for nearly 50 seconds. This remarkable Chateauneuf du Pape has a natural yet seductive feel. Drink it over the next two decades. 98 WA

DOMAINE DE LA JANASSE CHÂTEAUNEUF-DUPAPE VIEILLES VIGNES 2010 Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The 2010 Chateauneuf du Pape Vieilles Vignes, which achieved 16% natural alcohol, possesses an inky/purple color. It is slightly tighter and more restrained than the 2010 Chaupin, but it has enormous volume as well as incredible glycerin, richness and fat. A huge bouquet of pure blackberry and black currant fruit intermixed with charcoal, incense, truffles and spring flowers is followed by a prodigious, full-bodied wine that is capable of 20+ years of evolution. I hope Chateauneuf du Pape enthusiasts can find some of this amazing wine! 95 WS 100 WA per lot $1,100 - $1,300

MOLLYDOOKER CABERNET SAUVIGNON GIGGLEPOT 2009 South Australia.

MOLLYDOOKER THE VELVET GLOVE SHIRAZ 2011 McLaren Vale.

MOLLYDOOKER CARNIVAL OF LOVE SHIRAZ 2005 McLaren Vale.

The 2009 Gigglepot Cabernet Sauvignon is produced from mostly McLaren Vale fruit with about 12% coming from Langhorne Creek. It was aged in 80% American oak and 20% French, 53% new. Very deep garnet-purple colored, it reveals an incredibly intense nose of both crushed fresh black currant and creme de cassis with underlying mint, dark chocolate, cassia and allspice aromas. Full-bodied and juicy fruited, there’s a nice harmony of structure and flesh on the palate with refreshing acid and medium-firm finely grained tannins. It finishes long and spicy. It’s tempting forward now but should reward another year or two in bo!le and drink to 2018+. 93 WA

Very deep purple-black in color, the 2011 Velvet Glove is chock full of ripe and spicy blackberries, fresh blueberries and creme de cassis aromas that are accented by Chinese five spice notes and hints of chocolate, vanilla and some tar. Full-bodied, it is ripe and rich with a nice line of acid and mediumfirm, fine-grained tannins. Concentrated and persistent on the finish, it shows beautiful elegance and freshness and is a nicely delineated and expressive example of the varietal and its regional home. Drink: 2015-2025 97 WA

95 WS 91 WA

The 2004 The Eighth Maker Shiraz was aged for 20 months in 96% new French oak. Purple-colored, it offers up an expressive nose of Asian spices, menthol, game, black currant, blueberry, and chocolate. Remarkably light on its feet given its power, this velvety textured Shiraz has loads of succulent blue and black fruits, terrific concentration and depth, and 5-7 years of aging potential. It will offer a drinking window extending from 2014 to 2029. 92+ WA

243 239 LEONETTI CELLAR CABERNET SAUVIGNON WALLA WALLA VALLEY 2008 Columbia Valley. Washington. The 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon is a bigger, more structured wine. CHÂTEAU MONTROSE 1990 St.-Estèphe. 2ième Cru Classé This wine has an incredibly complex nose of spring flowers, blackberry and cassis liqueur, scorched earth and barbecue spice. It is full-bodied, majestic and opulent, with low acidity and fabulous fruit. It is close to full maturity. The wine should continue to drink well for at least another 30 or more years, but it is showing secondary nuances in the perfume. The wine is absolutely magnificent, broad, savory and mouth-filling. This is one of the all-time modern legends from Bordeaux as well as Chateau Montrose. (August 2014) 100 WA 6 bts. per lot $4,200 - $4,900

240 CHÂTEAU LAFITE ROTHSCHILD 2000 Pauillac. 1er Cru Classé Since I gave this wine a perfect score, I suppose some could see this as a downgrade. I found everything still there for a perfect rating, but I was just struck by how tight and backward the wine was. A blend of 93.3% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest Merlot, the wine still has a dark ruby/purple color and an extraordinarily youthful nose of graphite, black currants, sweet, unsmoked cigar tobacco, and flowers. The wine is rich, medium to full-bodied, but has that ethereal elegance and purity that is always Lafite. I originally predicted that it would first reach maturity in 2011, but I would push that back by 5-7 years now, although it has 50-60 years of life in front of it. Owners of this beauty are probably best advised to forget it for 5 years. Tasted next to a 1996 several days a!er the 2000 tasting, the 1996, which is a perfect wine, was far closer to full maturity than the 2000. 98 WS 98 WA 5 bts. per lot $7,500 - $8,700

244 CHÂTEAU MONTROSE 1990 St.-Estèphe.

247 LA FERME DU MONT CHÂTEAUNEUF-DU-PAPE CÔTES CAPELAN 2010 Châteauneuf-du-Pape. 98 WA 12 bts. (OC)

QUILCEDA CREEK CABERNET SAUVIGNON 2002 Columbia Valley. Almost as good as the 2003, the 2002 Cabernet Sauvignon is a blend of 97% Cabernet Sauvignon, 2% Merlot and 1% Cabernet Franc that spent 22 months in 100% new French oak. Its youthful purple/ruby color is followed by gorgeously complex and intense aromas of wild herbs, exotic spices, caramelized beef, licorice and layers of sweet black fruits and creamy black cherry-like nuances. Fullbodied, rich and incredibly youthful, it opens up beautifully in the glass and is a total thrill ride of a Washington State Cabernet. Another wine I’ve had multiple times recently, the 2003 Cabernet Sauvignon (97% Cabernet Sauvignon and 3% Merlot) is pure perfection in a glass and yields off-the-hook aromatics of cassis, black raspberries, tobacco leaf, pepper and licorice. Deep, layered and even elegant, with a seamless texture that conceals the sheer wealth of material present, it builds through the mid-palate, possesses huge amounts of extract and masses of polished tannin on the finish. Despite the overall size, it never loses its Cabernet Sauvignon soul and has an almost Bordeaux-like savoriness and tannic frame. Still young (yet gorgeous none the less), it can be enjoyed now or cellared for another 10-15+ years. Drink now -2028. 100 WA

TENUTA DELL'ORNELLAIA MASSETO 2006 Tuscany. The wine possesses staggering richness in a style that perfectly captures the essence of this great Tuscan vintage. Black cherries, flowers, licorice and sweet toasted oak are just some of the nuances that emerge from the 2006 Masseto. A wine of breathtaking depth, it also reveals superb clarity, freshness and vibrancy in a sumptuous, beautifullybalanced style. PAUL JABOULET AÎNÉ HERMITAGE LA CHAPELLE 1989 (2) Rhône. u. 2x2cm Lacking that extra dimension of freshness and purity of the '90, the 1989 Hermitage la Chapelle is still a fabulous wine that offers sensational aromatic fireworks to go with full-bodied richness and depth. Showing classic la Chapelle smoked meats, currants, wood smoke and chocolate, this beauty hits the palate with no hard edges, a blockbuster texture and a finish that just won't quit. It shows the slightly more masculine, austere edge of the vintage, but the tannin is beautifully sweet and it packs a serious amount of fruit in the mid-palate. The 1990 Hermitage La Chapelle lived up to its reputation on this occasion, and of the three titans (1990, 1978 and 1961), it was probably my favorite. Still inky colored and ruby at the rim, it offers an absolutely profound bouquet of sweet cassis, smoked meats, chocolate, licorice and spice. This is followed by a full-bodied, insanely textured, pure and hedonistic palate that has that perfect mix of still-vibrant fruit and ample secondary nuances. Both La Mission-Haut-Brion and Haut-Brion hit home runs in this vintage, which did not produce as many profound wines as the Bordeaux publicity machine suggested. 1989, the 200th anniversary of the French revolution, was an incredibly hot year (surpassed only by 1990 and 2003). Even from barrel the seamless 1989 La Mission revealed a special elixir aspect, tasting like it had been designed by Chanel. It still possesses a blue/purple color with only a hint of garnet creeping in, and the explosive aromatics offer up notes of licorice, creme de cassis, blueberry liqueur, smoky barbecue meats, truffles and graphite. If that’s not enough to get one salivating, the palate has never disappointed either. Full-bodied with extraordinary opulence as well as sweet, wellintegrated, velvety tannins, this fresh, lively, blockbuster La Mission appears to be one of those rare wines that never goes through a closed, unfriendly stage. It has been a compelling, multidimensional effort from barrel, in its infancy, and as it heads into late adolescence. A remarkable tour de force in winemaking, it is one of the all-time profound La Mission-Haut-Brions. Anticipated maturity: now-2050. 96 WS 100 WA

Buying at Waddington’s

All lots will be offered and sold subject to the Conditions of Sale which appear in this catalogue as well as any Glossary and posted or oral announcement. By bidding at auction, bidders are bound by those Conditions and Glossary, as amended by any oral announcement or posted notices, which together form the contract of sale between the successful bidder (buyer), Waddington’s™ and the consignor (seller) of the lot. Descriptions or photographs of lots are not warranties and each lot is sold “as is” in accordance with the Conditions of Sale.

You are advised to make any requests well in advance of the sale.

BuyerS premium A premium of 20% of the successful bid price of each lot is paid by the buyer as part of the total purchase price. A charge of 13% HST (Harmonized Sales Tax) is applicable on the hammer price and buyer's premium, except for purchases exported from Canada. In the case where purchases are shipped out of the province of Ontario, the HST or GST is charged based on the tax status of that province.

Online auctiOnS Registration for our online auctions is completed through our website. Once registered, you will be assigned a bidding number for an online auction when you log into your account. You only need to register once to participate in all of our online auctions.

conditions of Sale Fine Wine & Fine Spirits auctions 1. Waddington’s conducts auctions of fine wine and rare spirits as agent for the Liquor Control Board of Ontario (the “LCBO”) and all such auctions are authorized by the LCBO. All auction sales shall be deemed to take place in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. 2. All purchasers of alcoholic beverages through an auction must be nineteen (19) years of age or older. Proof of age may be required prior to the transfer of any purchased goods, including, but not limited provision of photo identification. 3. All lots are sold “AS IS”. Any description issued by the auctioneer of an article to be sold is subject to variation to be posted or announced verbally in the auction room prior to the time of sale. While the auctioneer has endeavoured not to mislead in the description issued, and the utmost care is taken to ensure the correct cataloguing of each item, such descriptions are purely statements of opinion and are not intended to constitute a representation to the prospective purchasers and no warranty of the correctness of such description is made. No opportunity of inspection is offered prior to the time of sale. No sale will be set aside on account of lack of correspondence of the article with its description or its reproduction, if any, whether colour or black & white. Some lots are of an age and/or nature which preclude their being in pristine condition and some catalogue descriptions make reference to damage and/or restoration. The lack of such a reference does not imply that a lot is free from defects nor does any reference to certain defects imply the absence of others. 4. Each lot sold is subject to a buyer’s premium of 20% of the successful bid price as part of the purchase price. 5. Unless exempted by law, the buyer is required to pay Harmonized Sales Tax on the total purchase price including the buyer’s premium. For international buyers, taxes are not applicable when purchases are shipped out of country. Items shipped out of Ontario, the buyer is required to pay taxes as per the tax status of that province, whether it HST or GST (Goods and Services Tax). Purchasers are solely responsible

for ensuring that they comply with all laws or regulations in relation to international shipping or the import of alcohol, including, but not limited to the payment of customs charges and duties.

lot until paid for in full. Items must be removed within 30 days from the date of sale, after which storage charges will be incurred at a rate of $4.00 per case per month.

6. The auctioneer reserves the right to withdraw any lot from sale at any time, to divide any lot or to combine any two or more lots at his sole discretion, all without notice.

12. Each lot purchased, unless the sale is cancelled as above, shall be held by the auctioneer at his premises or affiliated storage facility at the sole risk of the buyer until fully paid for and taken away.

7. The auctioneer has the right to refuse any bid and to advance the bidding at his absolute discretion. The auctioneer reserves the right not to accept and not to reject any bid. Without limitation, any bid which is not commensurate with the value of the article offered, or which is merely a nominal or fractional advance over the previous bid, may not be recognized.

13. Notwithstanding Section 3, if the buyer, prior to removal of a lot, makes arrangements satisfactory to the auctioneer for the inspection of such lot by a fully qualified person acceptable to the auctioneer to determine the genuineness or authenticity of the lot, to be carried out promptly following the sale of the lot, and if, but only if, within a period of 14 days following the sale a written opinion of such person is presented to the auctioneer to the effect that the lot is not genuine or authentic, accompanied by a written request by the buyer for rescission of the sale, then the sale of the lot will be rescinded and the sale price refunded to the buyer.

8. Each lot may be subject to an unpublished reserve which may be changed at any time by agreement between the auctioneer and the consignor. As previously agreed to as between the auctioneer and the consignor, the auctioneer may bid, or direct an employee to bid. In addition, the auctioneer may accept and submit absentee and telephone bids, to be executed by an employee of the auctioneer, pursuant to the instructions of prospective purchasers not in attendance at the sale. 9. The highest bidder accepted by the auctioneer for any lot shall be the buyer and such buyer shall forthwith assume full risk and responsibility for the lot and must comply with such other Conditions of Sale as may be applicable. If any dispute should arise between bidders the auctioneer shall have the absolute discretion to designate the buyer or, at his option, to withdraw any disputed lot from the sale, or to re-offer it at the same or a subsequent sale. The auctioneer’s decision in all cases shall be final. 10. The auctioneer will notify the successful buyer that they have won the bid. 11. The buyer shall pay for all lots within 48 hours from the date of the sale, after which a late charge of 2% per month on the total invoice may be incurred or the auctioneer, in his sole discretion, may cancel the sale. The buyer shall not become the owner of the
