3 CHÂTEAU L’EVANGILE 2005 Pomerol u. 2 x bn. 1 x marked label. 1 x scraped label. The 2005 L’Evangile’s gorgeous aromatics consist of spring flowers, black raspberries, licorice, truffle and graphite. The wine is full-bodied, rich, still youthful and backward, with sweet tannin and a long, layered, full-bodied mouthfeel. This stunner is capable of another two to three decades of longevity. The greatest L’Evangile since the 1982 and before the heroic duo of 2009 and 2010? June 2015 Drink: 2015-2045 WS 100 WA 96 2 bts.

per lot $700 - $900

5 CHÂTEAU PÉTRUS 1990 Pomerol u. bn. scraped & marked label. The 1990 Petrus remains incredibly young, one of the least evolved wines of the vintage (along with Montrose and Beausejour-Duffau). This dense ruby/ purple-colored effort is beginning to hint at the massive richness and full-bodied intensity lurking beneath its wall of tannin. The vintage’s sweetness, low acidity, and velvety tannins are present in abundance, and the wine is massive in the mouth as well as incredibly pure and welldelineated. I thought it would be drinkable by now, but it appears another 5-10 years will pass before it begins to reach its plateau of maturity. This wine is capable of lasting at least four more decades. An incredible achievement! June 2009 Drink: 2014-2054 WA 100 1 bt.

per lot $5,500 - $6,500

6 CHÂTEAU PÉTRUS 2007 Pomerol u. bn. marked label. WA 93 1 bt.

per lot $3,500 - $4,000

8 CHÂTEAU PÉTRUS 2010 Pomerol u. bn. The harvest at Petrus took place between September 27 and October 12, and the 2010 finished at 14.1% natural alcohol, which is slightly lower than the 2009’s 14.5%. The 2010 reminds me somewhat of the pre-1975 vintages of Petrus, a monsterin-the-making, with loads of mulberry, coffee, licorice and black cherry notes with an overlay of enormous amounts of glycerin and depth. Stunningly rich, fullbodied and more tannic and classic than the 2009, this is an awesome Petrus, but probably needs to be forgotten for 8-10 years. It should last at least another 50 or more. WA 100 JS 100 1 bt.

per lot $5,000 - $5,500

10 CHÂTEAU HAUT-BRION 1989 Pessac-Léognan, 1er Cru Classé u. 1 x 1 cm. 1 x 1.5 cm. 2 x scraped & marked labels. WS 100 WA 100 2 bts.

per lot $5,500 - $6,000

11 CHÂTEAU HAUT-BRION 1990 Pessac-Léognan, 1er Cru Classé u. 1 x 1 cm. 2 x 1.5 cm. 3 x marked & scraped labels. 1990: In terms of the brilliant complexity and nobility of the aromatics, scorched earth, black currants, plums, charcoal, cedar, and spices, the 1990 offers an aromatic explosion that is unparalleled. It is always fascinating to taste this wine next to the 1989, which is a monumental effort, but much more backward and denser, without the aromatic complexity of the 1990. The 1990 put on weight after bottling, and is currently rich, full-bodied, opulent, even flamboyant by Haut Brion’s standards. It is an incredible expression of a noble terroir in a top vintage. While it has been fully mature for a number of years, it does not reveal any bricking at the edge, and I suspect it will stay at this level for another 10-15 years ... but why wait? It is irresistible now. June 2009 Drink: 2009-2024 WA 98 3 bts.

per lot $3,600 - $4,000

12 CHÂTEAU MARGAUX 2009 (OWC) Margaux, 1er Cru Classé A brilliant offering from the Mentzelopoulos family, once again their gifted manager, Paul Pontallier, has produced an uncommonly concentrated, powerful 2009 Chateau Margaux made from 87% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest primarily Merlot with small amounts of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. As with most Medocs, the alcohol here is actually lower (a modest 13.3%) than most of its siblings. Abundant blueberry, cassis and acacia flower as well as hints of charcoal and forest floor aromas that are almost Burgundian in their complexity are followed by a wine displaying sweet, well-integrated tannins as well as a certain ethereal lightness despite the wine’s overall size. Rich, round, generous and unusually approachable for such a young Margaux, this 2009 should drink well for 30-35+ years. WS 97 WA 99 6 bts.

per lot $6,000 - $6,500

13 CHÂTEAU LAFITE ROTHSCHILD 1990 (OWC) Pauillac, 1er Cru Classé WS 96 WA 96 12 bts.

per lot $12,000 - $14,000

14 CHÂTEAU LAFITE ROTHSCHILD 1998 Pauillac, 1er Cru Classé u. 1 x bn. A blend of 81% Cabernet Sauvignon and 19% Merlot, this wine represents only 34% of Lafite’s total harvest. In a less than perfect Medoc vintage, it has been spectacular since birth, putting on more weight and flesh over the last year. This opaque purple-colored 1998 is close to perfection. The spectacular nose of lead pencil, smoky, mineral, and black currant fruit soars majestically from the glass. The wine is elegant yet profoundly rich, revealing the essence of Lafite’s character. The tannin is sweet, and the wine is spectacularly layered yet never heavy. The finish is sweet, super-rich, yet impeccably balanced and long (50+ seconds). Anticipated maturity: 2007-2035. April 2001 WS 95 WA 98 2 bts.

per lot $1,900 - $2,100

15 CHÂTEAU LAFITE ROTHSCHILD 2003 (1) Pauillac, 1er Cru Classé scraped & marked label. Drink: 2014-2039 WA 100 CHÂTEAU LATOUR 1996 (1) Pauillac, 1er Cru Classé u. bn. marked & scraped label. Deep garnet-black in color, the 1996 is classic Latour at its utmost. The nose offers a tantalizing array of complex notes including dried Chinese plums, toasted nuts, Indian spices and black olive tapenade over a core of dried cherries and aged meat. The palate is pure power that is stunningly balanced giving a generous level of fruit concentration perfectly offset by a high level of very finely grained tannins and seamless freshness. Possessing a finish that just goes on and on, this is as good as it gets. WS 96 WA 100 2 bts.

per lot $2,200 - $2,400

16 CHÂTEAU LATOUR 1994 Pauillac, 1er Cru Classé u. 1 x bn. 1 x vts. 2 x scraped & marked labels. 1 x scuffed capsule. WA 94 2 bts.

per lot $1,300 - $1,500

17 CHÂTEAU LATOUR 2000 Pauillac, 1er Cru Classé 2 x bn. 2 x marked labels. The 2000 Latour (a relatively abundant 14,000 cases compared to what they produced in 2009, 2008, or 2005) is “packed and stacked.” The extremely rich, black/purple color to the rim is followed by a wine with some subtle smoke, loads of minerals, a hint of vanilla, and plenty of creme de cassis as well as roasted meat and a slight scorched earth character. Broad, savory, and rich, the wine seems to be about 5 years away from full maturity and should drink well for at least 4050 more years. A great effort, probably eclipsed only by 2003 and 2009. June 2010 Drink: 2010-2060 WA 98 2 bts.

per lot $2,500 - $2,700

18 CHÂTEAU MOUTON ROTHSCHILD 2000 Pauillac, 1er Cru Classé Deep garnet colored with a touch of brick, the 2000 Mouton Rothschild (composed of 86% Cabernet Sauvignon and 14% Merlot) boldly bursts from the glass with tantalizing Black Forest cake, dried mulberries, kirsch and blackcurrant pastilles notes plus wafts of iodine, incense, potpourri and cinnamon stick with a hint of cigar boxes. Medium to full-bodied, the palate packs in the muscular fruit, framed by firm, ripe, grainy tannins and seamless freshness, finishing with phenomenal length. This is an incredibly complex and multifaceted wine, and it’s drinking deliciously now. This said, I can’t help but feel that it is holding something back, that it still has another layer of opulence and seduction to reveal in its tight-knit fruit and solid structure. I personally can’t wait to see how this beauty will continue to unfold over the years to come. October 2019 Drink: 2020-2055 WA 97+ 1 bt.

per lot $2,500 - $2,700

22 BRUNO GIACOSA BAROLO RISERVA FALLETTO DI SERRALUNGA D`ALBA 1989 Piedmont u. bn. soiled & scraped label. The 1989 Barolo Riserva Falletto is a deep, mineral-driven wine loaded with dark plums, smoke, prunes, plums and spices. Massive and virile, it is an assertive Barolo that commands attention for its explosive fruit and multi-faceted personality. The tannins are imposing, but also beautifully balanced. This is Giacosa’s most explosive, rich wine in 1989, and it is utterly divine. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2030. February 2010 WA 97 1 bt.

per lot $1,600 - $1,800

23 BRUNO GIACOSA BAROLO RISERVA FALLETTO DI SERRALUNGA D`ALBA 1990 Piedmont u. bn. scraped label. The 1990 Barolo Riserva Falletto is one of Bruno Giacosa’s most towering wines. Period. Rich, layered and opulent, this mineral-driven, powerful Barolo covers every inch of the palate with masses of dark fruit, smoke, soy, plums, menthol, dried roses, pine and a host of other balsamic overtones. This vivid, kaleidoscopic Barolo is a reference-point wine readers won’t want to miss. As always, the Riserva Falletto is virile and authoritative in tone. Simply put, it its profound. Anticipated maturity: 20102030. February 2010 WA 98 1 bt.

per lot $1,500 - $1,700

24 BRUNO GIACOSA BAROLO RISERVA SPECIALE COLLINA RIONDA 1978 Piedmont scraped & soiled label. One of the classic Barolos of the twentieth century is Bruno Giacosa’s 1978 Barolo Rionda di Serralunga. An infant in terms of development, even after having been aerated for a half day, it was reluctant to reveal all of its potential. The color is a healthy dark garnet with light amber at the edge. The earthy nose offers aromas of black fruits, underbrush, white truffles, tobacco, smoke, and sweet black cherry and plum-like fruit. Thick, tannic, muscular, and superbly concentrated, this mammoth wine requires another 5-10 years of cellaring. It should open by 20082010, and last for the following 20-30 years. January 2002 WA 96 1 bt.

per lot $3,300 - $3,600

25 ANTINORI SOLAIA TOSCANA IGT 1997 Tuscany u. 1 x bn. 1 x ts. 2 x scraped & marked label. The unfiltered 1997 Solaia (75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Sangiovese, and 5% Cabernet Franc, from a single 25-acre vineyard) is aged in 100% new French oak. There are 8,000 cases of the 1997. The sensational, opaque blue/purple-colored 1997 exhibits a complex nose of cedar, spice box, cassis, and subtle oak. With yields of only 30 hectoliters per hectare, and malolactic fermentation in barrel (a la Tignanello), this wine reveals extraordinary concentration, a thick, viscous texture, yet no sense of heaviness or ponderousness. It is a thrilling Solaia to consume over the next two decades. If a first-growth Pauillac were made in Tuscany, this would be it! February 2000 WA 96 2 bts.

per lot $800 - $1,000

33 DOMAINE ARMAND ROUSSEAU PÈRE ET FILS CHAMBERTIN-CLOS DE BÈZE 2005 Côte de Nuits, Grand Cru u. 1 cm. scraped & wrinkled label. The 2005 Chambertin Clos de Beze offers alluring aromas of licorice, mint, vanilla, plum paste, cherry preserves and rose petals, and seduces the palate with silky, incredibly refined texture and several octaves of fruit, herbal, floral and mineral notes, leading to a reverberative finish in which fruit pit and stony, chalky elements lend a sense of dark, weighty authority and an umami-like, meaty savor promotes uncontrollable salivation. No layering or mixing of metaphors can hope to do justice to the layering and concentration of flavors on display. April 2007 WA (9698) 1 bt.

per lot $4,500 - $5,000

34 DOMAINE ARMAND ROUSSEAU PÈRE ET FILS CHAMBERTIN-CLOS DE BÈZE 2007 Côte de Nuits, Grand Cru u. 1 cm. It has a pixilated bouquet that is utterly entrancing – red currant, bergamot, hints of pomegranate seeds and an underlying mineralite that is divine. The palate is perfectly balanced with extremely fine tannins. There is something regal and self-assured about this Clos-de-Beze, with a sense of weightlessness in the mouth that is bewitching. This both satisfies the senses and flirts with profundity. August 2013 WA 96 1 mag.

per lot $5,500 - $6,500

35 DOMAINE ARMAND ROUSSEAU PÈRE ET FILS CHAMBERTIN-CLOS DE BÈZE 2009 Côte de Nuits, Grand Cru u. 2 x 1 cm. 2 x scraped & marked labels. The 2009 Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru from Rousseau is a comparatively extroverted, baroque rendition of this wine, and its bouquet is already relatively forthcoming, wafting from the glass with fragrant notes of wild strawberry, black cherry, woodsmoke, loamy soil, grilled meat and soy. On the palate, the wine is richly textural, threedimensional and complete, with an ample core of fruit, supple tannins and extravagant breadth. Rousseau’s decision to harvest relatively early, however, seems to have been vindicated by vibrant acids and fruit that remains juicy and succulent, despite all its sumptuousness. January 2018 Drink to 2039 WA 95 2 bts.

per lot $6,500 - $7,500

37 DOMAINE ARMAND ROUSSEAU PÈRE ET FILS GEVREY-CHAMBERTIN CLOS SAINT-JACQUES 2005 Côte de Nuits, Premier Cru u. 1 cm. marked & stained label. One of the great renditions of this cuvée in recent times is the 2005 GevreyChambertin 1er Cru Clos Saint-Jacques, a magical wine that unfurls in the glass with a deep and complex bouquet of red berries and plums mingled with hints of raw cocoa, violets, blood orange and peony, complemented by enticing carnal bass notes. Full-bodied, deep and multidimensional, it’s seamless and complete, with fine concentration, racy but ripe acids and ample reserves of fine, powdery tannin, concluding with a long and sapid finish. The 2005 Clos Saint-Jacques is a decade away from full maturity, but its reference-point quality has long been impossible to miss. July 2020 Drink to 2065 WA 97 1 bt.

per lot $2,300 - $2,500

The medium-to-dark ruby-colored 1990 Latricieres-Chambertin has gorgeous aromatic depth. Its aromas of dark, overripe fruits gives way to an intense, hugely fashioned character crammed with earth, beets, dark cherries, licorice, and touches of oak. This is a deep, mediumto-full-bodied, satin-textured, and wellstructured wine. October 2000 WA 95 1 bt.

per lot $3,500 - $4,000

42 DOMAINE PONSOT CLOS DE LA ROCHE CUVÉE VIEILLES VIGNES 1990 Côte de Nuits, Grand Cru u. 3 cm. wrinkled & marked label. scraped capsule. The 1990 Clos de la Roche Grand Cru Cuvée Vieilles Vignes is a very fine example of the vintage, wafting from the glass with aromas of plums and red fruit compote mingled with notions of orange rind, licorice, rose petals, meat jus and spices. Full-bodied, ample and fleshy, with a sweet core of fruit and a broad-shouldered, expansive profile, it’s a ripe, powerful rendition of this bottling. December 2022 Drink to 2040 WA 94 1 bt.

per lot $2,500 - $2,700

43 DOMAINE PONSOT CLOS DE LA ROCHE CUVÉE VIEILLES VIGNES 1991 Côte de Nuits, Grand Cru u. 2.5 cm. scraped, soiled & marked label. scraped & wrinkled capsule. Ponsot’s 1991 Clos de la Roche-Vieilles Vignes (55-year old vines that produced 1/2 ton per hectare) is a mind-boggling wine that rivals virtually anything produced in Burgundy over the last several decades. It offers an amazingly sweet bouquet redolent with aromas of crushed black-raspberries, black-cherries, and underlying earthy, truffle-like notes. Awesomely rich, dense, and full-bodied, this spectacular low acid, multidimensional wine has a blockbuster finish. December 1993 WA 97 1 bt.

The bouquet is just so pure and refined, reminiscent of the 2005 in some way, albeit with not quite the same intensity. However, the detail is breathtaking one of those bouquets that whisks you straight to its place of birth, within those ancient stone walls in Morey-Saint-Denis. The palate is brilliantly balanced, utterly refined with lace-like tannin, perfectly pitched acidity and a gentle build in the mouth towards a glorious, saline-tinged finish that hangs like the final piano chord in an empty hall. Wondrous - perhaps the high point of Pitiot’s tenure? Drink to 2045 October 2015 WA 97 3 bts.

49 DOMAINE DU CLOS DE TART CLOS DE TART 2005 Côte de Nuits, Grand Cru u. 2 cm. soiled label. Sylvain Pithiot and his team – whom I did not have a chance to visit in person – scored an impressive success with this venerable Mommessin monopole. For a Burgundy of over 14% alcohol, the 2005 Clos de Tart exhibits remarkably “cool” aromas of blueberry, greenhouse vegetation and flowers, smoked meats, and sea breeze. Nor does its silkentextured, blue- and black-fruited palate impression, while voluminous, evince any heat. Juicy in fruit, savory, saline, and stony throughout, this wine finishes with a lasting impression of concentrated fresh blueberry and blackberry, along with stony, alkaline minerality and black pepper-dusted smoked duck. June 2007 WA 94 2 bts.

per lot $1,500 - $1,700

52 CHÂTEAU PAVIE 2000 (1) Saint-Émilion, Premier Grand Cru Classé u. 1 cm. marked label. Just beginning to come around and strut its enormous potential, this wine at age 15 has been evolving like a glacier. The wine has an inky, opaque, plum/purple color and a stunningly rich nose of mulberries, bramble berries, blackberries, licorice and incense as well as touches of toast and graphite. Fabulously concentrated and full-bodied, with a multidimensional mouthfeel, this profound Pavie is in mid-adolescence. It should evolve and continue to drink well for at least another 30-40 years. This is clearly the first compelling effort made by the Perse family. August 2015 Drink: 2015-2055 WA 100 CHÂTEAU PAVIE 2001 (2) Saint-Émilion, Premier Grand Cru Classé u. 2 x 1 cm. 2 x marked labels. Drink: 2015-2035 WS 95 WA 96 3 bts.

per lot $800 - $1,000

53 CHÂTEAU PAVIE 2002 Saint-Émilion, Premier Grand Cru Classé u. 2 x 1 cm. 1 x stained label. 1 x marked label. WA 93 2 bts.

per lot $600 - $800

54 CHÂTEAU PAVIE 2005 Saint-Émilion, Premier Grand Cru Classé u. 1 x 1 cm. 1 x 2 cm. 1 x marked label. Dense, opaque purple to the rim, with a gorgeously promising nose of blackberries, cassis, graphite and cedar wood just beginning to emerge, it tastes more like a three-year-old than wine that is already a decade old. This beauty is intense and full-bodied, with magnificent concentration, a majestic mouth-feel and a total seamless integration of tannin, wood, alcohol, etc. Beautifully rich, full and multidimensional, this is a tour de force in winemaking and certainly one of the top dozen or so 2005 Bordeaux. Forget it for another 3-5 years and drink it over the following 50-100 years! August 2015 WA 100 2 bts.

per lot $800 - $1,000

55 CHÂTEAU CLINET 2005 Pomerol u. 3 x bn. The opaque ruby/purple 2005 Clinet offers incredibly fragrant aromatics, an opaque ruby/purple color, and a wonderfully sweet nose of flowers, blackberries, licorice, truffle and caramel. Full-bodied, powerful and rich, it is not as nuanced or complex as the top four or five Pomerols, but close. June 2015 Drink: 2020-2050 WA 96 3 bts.

per lot $500 - $700

56 CHÂTEAU L’EGLISE-CLINET 2005 Pomerol u. 2 x bn. 2 x marked labels. The CHÂTEAU L’EGLISE-CLINET 2005 was served from bottle and from magnum (both ex-cellar). It has a magnificent nose with bewitching delineation: darker fruit than either the 2003 or 2004, blackberry, raspberry, hints of black tea and black truffle. The palate is medium-bodied with brilliant focus, still quite backward as so many grandees of this vintage remain, albeit beginning to soften towards the licorice-tinged finish. This is a benchmark for both Denis Durantou and this Pomerol estate, although I can see it testing winelovers’ patience. Tasted March 2015. Drink 2020-2050 WS 98 WA 99 2 bts.

per lot $600 - $800

57 CHÂTEAU PÉTRUS 2005 Pomerol u. bn. Offering pure black cherry and blackcurrant fruit, the inky ruby/purple 2005 Petrus is still very young and unyielding, but super-concentrated, powerful, full-bodied and primordial. It is much more backward than the likes of Lafleur, Trotanoy or Hosanna. Nevertheless, it is super-rich, extracted, beautifully balanced and pure. Forget it for another 10-15 years, and drink it over the following half-century. This may well be among the longest-lived wines of 2005. WS 100 WA 97 1 bt.

per lot $4,500 - $5,000

58 CHÂTEAU MARGAUX 1982 (1) Margaux, 1er Cru Classé u. bn. marked label. Drink: 2016-2036 WA 97 CHÂTEAU PALMER 1999 (1 MAG.) Margaux, 3ième Cru Classé u. bn. The 1999 is the greatest Palmer made since 1961, 1966, 1970, 1983, and 1989. It is one of the superstars of the vintage. The wine is a blend of 48% Cabernet Sauvignon, 46% Merlot, and 6% Petit Verdot. It boasts a staggering bouquet of violets and other spring flowers intermixed with licorice, black currants, and subtle wood. Only 50% of the production made it into the grand vin. This is a multidimensional, compelling effort with both power and elegance, it offers sweet tannin along with flavors that caress the palate, and a 45-second finish. This is terrific stuff! Anticipated maturity: 2004-2025. WA 95 1 bt. & 1 mag.

per lot $1,500 - $1,700

59 CHÂTEAU LAFITE ROTHSCHILD 2000 Pauillac, 1er Cru Classé 1 x marked label. A blend of 93.3% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest Merlot, the wine still has a dark ruby/purple color and an extraordinarily youthful nose of graphite, black currants, sweet, unsmoked cigar tobacco, and flowers. The wine is rich, medium to fullbodied, but has that ethereal elegance and purity that is always Lafite. June 2010 WA 98+ 2 bts.

per lot $3,000 - $3,500

60 CHÂTEAU LAFITE ROTHSCHILD 2000 Pauillac, 1er Cru Classé A blend of 93.3% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest Merlot, the wine still has a dark ruby/purple color and an extraordinarily youthful nose of graphite, black currants, sweet, unsmoked cigar tobacco, and flowers. The wine is rich, medium to fullbodied, but has that ethereal elegance and purity that is always Lafite. June 2010 WA 98+ 2 bts.

per lot $3,000 - $3,500

61 CHÂTEAU LATOUR 2000 Pauillac, 1er Cru Classé u. bn. marked label. June 2010 Drink: 2010-2060 WA 98 1 bt.

per lot $1,100 - $1,300

62 DOMAINE JEAN-LOUIS CHAVE ERMITAGE CUVÉE CATHELIN 2000 Rhône u. 1 cm. scraped & soiled label. Surprisingly, there will be about 200 cases produced of a 2000 Hermitage Cuvee Cathelin. Based on earlier visits, I thought this cuvee would not be produced again as the Chaves were embarrassed by all the attention previous offerings received. However, they will continue to produce it as long as it does not detract from their classic cuvee. The Cuvee Cathelin displays more new oak than the regular bottling as well as firmer tannin, yet also great length, palate presence, and structure. Boasting a chocolatey, blackberry nose, huge intensity, and super elegance and finesse, it will require 5-6 years of cellaring. Qualitatively, it is no better than its sibling, but does possess additional structure and new oak characteristics. Anticipated maturity: 20102040. June 2003 WA 96 1 bt.

per lot $5,500 - $6,000

63 DOMAINE JAMET CÔTE-RÔTIE 1988 Rhône u. 1 x 1.5 cm. 1 x 2 cm. 2 x scraped & soiled labels. 2 x scuffed capsules. Opaque black/purple, with an incredible knockout bouquet of cassis, leather, herbs, smoked meats, and Asian scents (soy), this fabulously rich, dense, chewy Cote Rotie has a texture that reminded me of a great Pomerol. December 1996 WA 95 2 bts.

per lot $3,500 - $4,000

64 DOMAINE JAMET CÔTE-RÔTIE 1991 Rhône u. 1.5 cm. scraped & soile label. scuffed capsule. The greatest Cote Rotie I’ve tasted from this estate, the 1991 Cote Rotie is utterly profound and flirts with perfection. Compared to the 2001 by Jean-Paul (I think it’s a fair click better), it is as seamless, layered and complex as they come, with phenomenal notes of black raspberries, cassis, olive tapenade, incense and bacon fat all soaring from the glass. Full-bodied, beautifully concentrated and textured, it’s a heavenly Cote Rotie to drink anytime. September 2015 WA 99 1 bt.

per lot $2,500 - $2,700

65 DOMAINE JEAN-LOUIS CHAVE HERMITAGE 1978 Rhône u. 2.5 cm. scraped, soiled & marked label. This has always been one of Chave’s single greatest vintages, possibly equaled in recent years by 1989, 1991, 1994, and 1995, and possibly surpassed by 1990. Memorizing its aromas, its flavors, its texture, and its length is a quick education in what great wine is all about. Still an infant, with a murky, dark ruby/garnet color, this wine offers a smoky, tar, cassis, herb, and grilled meat set of aromatics, huge body, and mouth-searing tannin. December 1996 WA 96 1 bt.

per lot $2,400 - $2,600

66 DOMAINE JEAN-LOUIS CHAVE HERMITAGE 1989 (1) Rhône u. 4 cm. marked label. WA 96 DOMAINE JEAN-LOUIS CHAVE HERMITAGE 1995 (1) Rhône u. 1 cm. marked label. WA 97 RENE ROSTAING CÔTE-RÔTIE CÔTE BLONDE 2003 (1 MAG.) Rhône u. 1.5 cm. wrinkled label. WA 97 2 bts. & 1 mag.

67 DOMAINE JEAN-LOUIS CHAVE HERMITAGE 1990 Rhône u. 2 cm. stained & soiled label. Also mature, yet with another level of texture and richness, the 1990 Hermitage is a profound effort that’s drinking perfectly. Voluptuous, yet classy and still refined, with awesome cassis and blackberry fruit, flowers, rose petal and hints of rendered bacon fat, it is fullbodied, textured and layered on the palate, with no hard edges and killer length on the finish. This beauty makes lights go off in my head, and as with the ’91, I’d drink bottles over the coming 4-5 years or so. August 2014 Drink: 2014-2019 WA 98 1 bt.

per lot $700 - $900

70 CHÂTEAU LA FLEUR-PÉTRUS 2010 Pomerol u. 2 x vts. This wine has a character similar to its cross-street neighbor, Petrus, displaying sweet mulberry and intense black fruit characteristics, with a hint of vanillin and loads of black cherry jam. Full-bodied, extravagantly luscious, with a skyscraperlike mid-palate and phenomenal length of close to 50 seconds, the wine has plenty of tannin, but the voluptuous fruit, power and overall glycerin and intensity tend to conceal much of it. Elegant but compellingly rich and authoritative, the 2010 is a truly magnificent wine for this estate, which has one of the finest terroirs in all of Pomerol. Forget it for 5-7 years and drink it over the following 30-35. February 2013 WS 98 WA 97 JS 98 2 bts.

per lot $600 - $800

71 CHÂTEAU TROTANOY 2010 Pomerol u. 2 x bn. Stunning nose with wild strawberries, vanilla and raspberries. Opens up with a little time in the glass to sweet licorice, blueberries and some graphite. Round and full on the palate with an amazing fruit and refined tannins. Truly superb. Hard not to drink now. Try from 2016. February 2013 jamessuckling.com Production: 1,900 cases. 72 CHÂTEAU D’ISSAN 2005 (1) Margaux, 3ième Cru Classé u. vts. scraped label. The more serious grand vin twin, the 2005 d’Issan, has a stunning nose of spring flowers, blackcurrant and blue/ black fruits galore, and an impressively opaque dark plum/purple color. With a rich, concentrated and pure mouthfeel, wonderfully sweet tannin, full-bodied density and richness, but elegance in abundance, this is a stunner, and one of the great Margaux of the vintage. Drink it now and over the next 20 years. June 2015 Drink: 2015-2035 WA 95 CHÂTEAU SAINT-PIERRE 2005 (1) Saint-Julien u. bn. marked label. 2 bts.

81 TENUTA SAN GUIDO BOLGHERI SASSICAIA 1985 Tuscany u. ts. scraped & marked label. slightly raised cork. The soaring beauty of this landmark Sassicaia literally transcends the rather mundane realm of wine critique with its string of adjectives and wearisome descriptors. It hardly deserves to be treated like any of the other gorgeous wines we tasted on this glorious day. In truth, the 1985 Sassicaia does reveal a new perspective onto its perfection each time you have the fortune to taste it. April 2017 Drink to 2035 WA 100 1 mag.

82 TUA RITA REDIGAFFI 2012 Tuscany u. 2 x vts. This vintage was entirely made by Luca D’Attoma. The Tua Rita 2012 Redigaffi is another milestone vintage that opens a new chapter in the timeline of this iconic winery in Suvereto on the Tuscan Coast. Luca’s footprint is evident as those more obvious oak tones suddenly disappear, giving space to black fruit, dried plum and syrupy blackcurrant. The wine shows an inky dark color nonetheless, and although its texture is generous and elegant, Redigaffi is suddenly void of those more obvious toasted oak influences. As a result, you gain a bigger window on some of the territorial aromas of Mediterranean herb and dried berry that we will find again in the vintages to follow. June 2022 Drink to 2045 WA 94 2 bts.

84 CASTELLO DI AMA L’APPARITA 2016 (OC) Tuscany u. bn. The 2016 L’Apparita is a standout wine. A true symbol of the vintage, the wine shows the classic lines and extreme precision we can expect from 2016, with the plump, ripe generosity of the Merlot grape (when farmed in the right hands of course). The wine is profound, rich and beautifully concentrated with power but no residual heaviness. I went back to this sample a few times in the 12 hours after I popped the cork, and the wine was more beautiful each time. It offers a profound sense of beauty, harmony and Merlot purity now, and it should evolve slowly and softly in the coming years. September 2019 Drink to 2045 WA 99 1 mag.

94 CHÂTEAU D’YQUEM 2010 (OWC) Sauternes, Premier Cru Supérieur Pale to medium lemon-gold color, the 2010 d’Yquem has retreated into its shell at this youthful stage, offering spritely suggestions of lemon curd, lime cordial and green mango with wafts of honeysuckle, spice cake, sea spray and beeswax plus a hint of gingerbread. The palate really comes through with super intense, tightly wound citrus, savory and mineral layers carried by a laser-precise backbone of freshness, finishing with crazy persistence that lingers a full three minutes and then some. This is going to be a very exotic, opulent Yquem! March 2020 Drink to 2065 WA 98 12 hf. bts. $2,900

95 CHÂTEAU HAUT-BRION 2005 (OWC) Pessac-Léognan, 1er Cru Classé The mineral-laced 2005 Haut Brion (56% Cabernet Sauvignon, 39% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc) is exquisite. With its elegance and finesse, it is not as powerful as La Mission, but the nobility and complexity of the aromatics, incredible fragrance (subtle smoke and blue, red, and black fruits) that persists in the glass, full-bodied mouthfeel (though very light and delicate on its feet), and incredible length characterize this great Haut-Brion. It is just starting to drink well, and should continue to do so for at least another three decades. It is a tour de force in winemaking, but only 9,000 cases were produced. June 2015. 2015-2045 WA 100 6 bts.

per lot $6,000 - $7,000

96 CHÂTEAU HAUT-BRION 2012 (OWC) Pessac-Léognan, 1er Cru Classé 2012 Haut-Brion has an open and generous bouquet with blackcurrant pastille, cassis and briary aromas the exude very pure Merlot. The palate is medium-bodied with a sumptuous opening that is rare in 2012: rounded and generous, caressing in the mouth with black plum and blackcurrant towards the finish, residues of truffle and white pepper lingering on the aftertaste that turn very savory after 15 minutes—bacon fat or Italian cured meats. October 2016 Drink to 2055 WA 96+ 12 bts.

97 CHÂTEAU LA MISSION HAUT-BRION 2009 (OWC) Pessac-Léognan, Grand Cru Classé The deep garnet colored 2009 La Mission Haut-Brion absolutely sings of warm red and black currants, chocolate-covered cherries, liquid licorice, sassafras and espresso with hint of lilacs, pencil shavings and truffles. Full-bodied, rich, bold and oh-so-decadent in the mouth, the palate is completely packed with black fruit preserves and exotic spice layers, framed by wonderfully velvety tannins and seamless freshness, finishing epically long. Wow! March 2009 Drink to 2053 WA 100 12 bts.

99 CHÂTEAU PAPE CLEMENT 2010 (OWC) Pessac-Léognan, Grand Cru Classé Having tasted it four times in Bordeaux, and rating it perfect three times and 99 the fourth time, this final blend of 51% Merlot, 47.5% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 1.5% Petit Verdot is perfection in a bottle. Tipping the scales at 14.5% natural alcohol, there are 8,000 cases of it. Its sublime elegance, the power, the medium to full-bodied texture, the silky tannins, the subtle notes of smoke, lead pencil shavings, black currants, charcoal, camphor, blueberry and cassis fruit are all remarkable. It is a rich, full-throttle wine, but the elegance and the great terroir of Pape Clement come through in abundance. It is slightly more developed and evolved than the 2005 was at a similar point in its evolution, but it certainly needs another 5-7 years to develop further nuances, which it surely will. This wine will last 30-40+ years. February 2013 WA 100 12 bts.

The finest wine ever made by proprietors Daniel and Florence Cathiard, the 2009 Smith-Haut-Lafitte exhibits an opaque blue/purple color in addition to a glorious nose of acacia flowers, licorice, charcoal, blueberries, black raspberries, lead pencil shavings and incense. It should age effortlessly for 30-40+ years. Bravo! December 2011 WA 100 4 bts.

101 CHÂTEAU PONTET-CANET 2003 Pauillac, 5ième Cru Classé u. 3 x bn. The spectacular 2003 Pontet Canet is still incredibly young and vigorous. This full-bodied classic boasts a dense purple color as well as a superb nose of graphite, creme de cassis, forest floor, licorice and a hint of truffles, low acidity, and extravagant richness. Most of the tannins have been resolved in this superstar of the vintage. It should continue to drink well for 10-15+ years. Issue date 27 August 2014 Drink: 20142029 WS 94 WA 95+ 3 bts.

per lot $500 - $700

102 CHÂTEAU PONTET-CANET 2008 (OWC) Pauillac, 5ième Cru Classé A candidate for the “wine of the vintage,” Pontet Canet’s 2008 boasts an opaque purple color as well as copious aromas of sweet blueberries, blackberries and black currant fruit intertwined with lead pencil shavings, subtle barbecue smoke and a hint of forest floor. Full-bodied, with fabulous richness, texture and tremendous freshness, this first-growth-like effort is more developed than the uber-powerful 2010. Give it 5-8 years of cellaring and drink it over the following three decades. Bravo! Drink: 2016-2046 May 2011 WA 96 12 bts.

103 CHÂTEAU PONTET-CANET 2009 (OWC) Pauillac, 5ième Cru Classé An amazing wine in every sense, this classic, full-bodied Pauillac is the quintessential Pontet Canet from proprietor Alfred Tesseron, who continues to reduce yields and farms his vineyards biodynamically – a rarity in Bordeaux. Black as a moonless night, the 2009 Pontet Canet offers up notes of incense, graphite, smoke, licorice, creme de cassis and blackberries. A wine of irrefutable purity, laser-like precision, colossal weight and richness, and sensational freshness, this is a tour de force in winemaking that is capable of lasting 50 or more years. The tannins are elevated, but they are sweet and beautifully integrated as are the acidity, wood and alcohol (which must be in excess of 14%). This vineyard, which is situated on the high plateau of Pauillac adjacent to Mouton Rothschild, appears to have done everything perfectly in 2009. Maturity: 2025-2075 WA 100

106 LES FORTS DE LATOUR 2009 (OWC) Pauillac Possibly the best second wine ever made at Latour (and I love how the 1982 is drinking at age 30), the 2009 Les Forts de Latour is composed of two-thirds Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest Merlot blended with a tiny dollop of Petit Verdot, and finished at 13.5% alcohol. Juicy notes of creme de cassis, licorice, camphor, smoke and crushed rocks are followed by a rich, unctuously textured, thick, juicy, exceptionally pure, long wine. This beauty will be at its finest in several years and should keep for three decades. December 2011 WA 95 12 bts.

per lot $3,200 - $3,400

107 CHÂTEAU MONTROSE 2009 (OWC) Saint-Estèphe, 2ième Cru Classé It has a very powerful and opulent bouquet that is irresistible, blackcurrant pastilles, cedar, violets and a hint of vanilla pod. The palate is full-bodied, powerful, grippy in the mouth with layers of black fruit laced with tar and white pepper. It is a dense Montrose, heady unlike any other vintage with a spicy and purposeful finish that lingers long in the mouth. Almost knocks you sideways! This is immense. Tasted September 2016. WS 97 WA 98 12 bts.

WA 93+ CHÂTEAU GRUAUD-LAROSE 2000 (1) Saint-Julien, 2ième Cru Classé scraped label. A very strong effort for Gruaud Larose, possibly eclipsed by what they have done in 2009, this is a pure, full-bodied Gruaud Larose with plenty of new saddle leather, cedar wood, black currants, cherries, licorice, and Provencal herbs. Spicy, earthy, full-bodied, and rich, it has hit its plateau of full maturity, where it should stay for another 20 or more years. WA 94 3 bts.

Despite its considerable ripeness and opulence, the 2007 Solaia is never heavy, rather it impresses for its extraordinary finesse and balance. Minerals, graphite and crushed rocks frame a long, seductive finish. This is a wonderful Solaia loaded with vintage and vineyard character. October 2010 WA 97 4 bts.

137 CHÂTEAU ANGÉLUS 1989 Saint-Émilion, Premier Grand Cru Classé u. bn. A beautiful sweet blueberry and blackberry-scented nose of olive, licorice and cedar wood is followed by a fullbodied and opulent wine, with hints of espresso roast and chocolate as well. It seemed to gain a lot in the glass, but the astringent tannins in the finish still seem a bit awkward and distracting. I think bottles I’ve had have generally shown better, although this is certainly an exceptional wine. It has just suffered somewhat in comparison with several of the other vintages. The more developed 1990 boasts an incredible perfume of hickory wood, coffee, smoked meat, Asian spices, black cherries, and blackberries. Lush, opulent, and full-bodied, it is a fully mature, profound Beaucastel that will last another 15-20 years. December 2002 WS 92 WA 96 1 mag.

139 DOMAINE JEAN-LOUIS CHAVE HERMITAGE 1995 Rhône u. 1 cm. wrinkled & scraped label. A step up and showing more minerality, structure and length, with a masculine style, the 1995 Hermitage is drinking beautifully today. Described as disappointing by Jean-Louis over the past 5 years or so, it appears to be opening up and possesses fabulous, liquid rocklike qualities to go with cassis, blackberry and wild herbs. Medium to full-bodied, fabulously textured, rich and stretching out nicely on the finish, enjoy this beauty over the coming decade. August 2014 WA 97 1 bt.

140 PAUL JABOULET AÎNÉ HERMITAGE LA CHAPELLE 1990 Rhône u. 2 cm. wrinkled & scraped label. The 1990 Hermitage La Chapelle lived up to its reputation on this occasion, and of the three titans (1990, 1978 and 1961), it was probably my favorite. Still inky colored and ruby at the rim, it offers an absolutely profound bouquet of sweet cassis, smoked meats, chocolate, licorice and spice. This is followed by a full-bodied, insanely textured, pure and hedonistic palate that has that perfect mix of still-vibrant fruit and ample secondary nuances. Drink: 2015-2040 WA 100 1 bt.

per lot $700 - $900

141 DOM PÉRIGNON CHAMPAGNE BRUT 1996 (OC) Champagne The brilliant 1996 Dom Perignon, which has largely disappeared from the marketplace, may be the finest young example of DP I have ever tasted. Notes of crushed rocks, honeysuckle, lemon oil, orange marmalade, and white pear provide a stunning aromatic display as well as palate impression. Great acidity and huge flavor intensity backed up by vibrant acidity make this an exquisite Champagne. It should drink well for 20-25 years, possibly longer. Readers should remember that the 1971 Dom Perignon Rose is still drinking exquisitely. I recently had the 1969 and 1970 Dom Perignons (from magnum), and both were drinking brilliantly. It makes one realize just how long-lived these wines can be. WA 98 1 bt.

142 BARTOLO MASCARELLO BAROLO 2010 Piedmont u. 1 cm. The 2010 Barolo is a singularly elegant expression that benefits from extremely long maceration time (up to 54 days) and a non-interventionists’ winemaking philosophy. The wine is superb in its elegance and finesse that caresses the palate in the most delicate and ethereal manner imaginable. Small fruit tones are enhanced by ash, crushed mineral, licorice and dried mint. Because of changes in how Barolo can be labeled, the wine no longer carries the names of the four single-vineyards that make up the traditional blend for this wine (Canubbi, San Lorenzo, Rue and Rocche di La Morra). Instead, this historic wine is now labeled straightforward “Barolo.” Drink: 2017-2038. June 2014 WA 96+ 1 bt.

144 LUCIANO SANDRONE BAROLO CANNUBI BOSCHIS 1990 Piedmont u. 1 cm. The 1990 Barolo Cannubi Boschis is a massive, dark Barolo loaded with dark cherries, tobacco, grilled herbs, menthol and sweet French oak. Stylistically it could not be more different than the 1989 in its texture, weight and flavor profile. Still deeply colored, the 1990 Cannubi Boschis offers incredible textural richness and depth, with a finish that lasts forever. With time in the glass, the wine’s inner perfume emerges, adding further dimensions of complexity and nuance. February 2010 WA 96 1 bt.

148 ANTINORI TIGNANELLO TOSCANA IGT 2018 (OWC) Tuscany 2018 Tignanello is quite the dapper and jovial wine that hits the market just as much of the world is emerging from a dark chapter of lockdowns and coronavirus curfews. I love the optimism that springs bright with such clarity and detail from within this blend of Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. May 2021 Drink to 2045 WA 98 1 3 ltr.

149 ANTINORI TIGNANELLO TOSCANA IGT 2019 (OC) Tuscany This is an elegant and extremely polished wine made with mostly Sangiovese and smaller parts Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. Here too, the small blending element of Cabernet Franc has been slowly increasing in recent years. The 2019 vintage was born with a good amount of power and tannic structure, and maceration times were slightly reduced as a result. This less extractive approach shapes a polished and elegant wine with plenty of bright berry fruit, cherry, dried mint, blue flower, blood orange and rusty earth. The palate is more compact and streamlined. It shows beautiful grace. After this, the next vintage to watch is the highly anticipated 2021. June 2022 Drink to 2045 WA 96 6 bts.

150 TENUTA SAN GUIDO BOLGHERI SASSICAIA 1985 Tuscany u. vts. peeling label. April 2017 Drink to 2035 WA 100 1 bt.

151 TENUTA SAN GUIDO BOLGHERI SASSICAIA 2015 (OWC) Tuscany This is a confident and proud red wine from Tuscany. Starting with the primary material at hand, you sense the quality of fruit thanks to the wine’s beautifully dark appearance and the rich texture it offers to the palate. The acidity is integrated, but more freshness still would have been welcomed in my view (and would also contribute to its longevity). The bouquet is amplified both in terms of volume and length. Its playlist includes dark berry fruit, spice, leather, licorice and roasted coffee bean. Yet, the mouthfeel is extremely graceful and silky. The wine’s undisputed pedigree is showcased on the palate. February 2018 Drink to 2045 WA 97 1 3 ltr.

155 TENUTA SAN GUIDO BOLGHERI SASSICAIA 2019 (OWC) Tuscany The bouquet is up front and very expressive from the get-go. It offers a generous display of crunchy, dark cherry that hints at the extra concentration and fruit weight obtained in the 2019 growing season. This vintage will be remembered for the crisp richness of the fruit and its important textural imprint. It also shows fine elegance, bordering on the ethereal, with berry aromas, tarry earth and brushes of balsam herb or grilled rosemary. Sassicaia always shows an almost-glossy finely knit quality to the polished mouthfeel, and I find it again here next to fresh acidity and firm tannins. Mouthfeel in 2019 is the wine’s strongest suit. 170 DOMINUS ESTATE 2013 Napa Valley u. bn. The 2013 Dominus is, to my way of thinking, one of the most profound wines Christian Moueix has yet made in his rather brilliant winemaking history, both in France and in Napa Valley. This wine, with very low yields of only 3,500 cases and a final blend of 89% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Petit Verdot and 4% Cabernet Franc, offers up notes of cedar wood, forest floor, loamy soil and oodles of blackberry and blackcurrant fruit. Very opaque purple in color, super-pure and intense, this wine has low acidity, but ripe, noticeable tannins. This is a 30- to 40-year wine and a profound effort from this famous vineyard in Yountville. Drink it over the next 40+ years. October 2015. 30th Vintage Edition. WA 100 1 bt.

174 CHÂTEAU LAFITE ROTHSCHILD 2016 Pauillac, 1er Cru Classé Deep purple-black in color, it slowly reveals the most gorgeous perfume of kirsch, lilacs, black raspberries and warm blackcurrants with underlying nuances of cigar box, rose hip tea, cloves, licorice and pencil lead plus a waft of garrigue. Medium-bodied and built like a brick house with a firm yet beautifully ripe, finely pixelated tannic backbone and seamless freshness supporting the amazing intensity of black fruits and floral layers, it finishes very long and provocatively perfumed. November 2018 Drink to 2066 WA 99 1 bt.

175 CHÂTEAU DUHART-MILON 2009 Pauillac, 4ième Cru Classé u. 2 x bn. A blend of 63% Cabernet Sauvignon and 37% Merlot, it displays an inky/blue/ purple color as well as a big, sweet nose of creme de cassis, forest floor, licorice, lead pencil, cedar and subtle barrique smells. Viscous and full-bodied, it is the most concentrated and broadest example of this cuvee I have tasted in over three decades. It will be ready to drink in 5-7 years and should last for three decades or more. Consumers looking to maximize value should be checking out Duhart Milon, as this may be the single smartest purchase in this great and historic vintage! December 2011 WS 92 WA 97 2 bts.

180 CHÂTEAU LAFITE ROTHSCHILD 2001 Pauillac, 1er Cru Classé The 2001 Lafite Rothschild’s deep, saturated plum/purple color is accompanied by lead pencil liqueur-like notes intermixed with sweet red and black currants, plums, and cedar. This blend of 86.5% Cabernet Sauvignon and 13.5% Merlot is a classic example of Lafite. Extremely elegant, medium-bodied, with intense concentration, richness, and sweet tannin, it appears to be on a rapid evolutionary track, at least in comparison to recent Lafite vintages that have been far more backward and powerful. June 2004 WA 94 2 bts.

per lot $1,800 - $2,000

181 CHÂTEAU LAFITE ROTHSCHILD 2002 Pauillac, 1er Cru Classé 1 x scraped label. A brilliant offering and a candidate for wine of the vintage, this is classic Lafite that reminded me somewhat of the 1976, although the vintage conditions were completely different. This is a mediumweight, quintessentially elegant style of Lafite with notes of lead pencil shavings/ graphite along with black currants, plums, and crushed rocks/mineral. Wonderfully pure, dense, with a deep ruby/purple color and loads of fruit, definition, and a long finish, this is a brilliant, elegant Lafite Rothschild that builds incrementally in the mouth and has more power and density than it initially seems. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2025. April 2005 WA 94 2 bts.

per lot $1,700 - $1,900

183 CHÂTEAU LAFITE ROTHSCHILD 2004 Pauillac, 1er Cru Classé 1 x scraped label. This beautiful, stunningly dense purplecolored effort (includes about 90% Cabernet Sauvignon) offers up precise notes of graphite, black cherries, cassis, scorched earth, and minerals. Medium to full-bodied with fabulous fruit, impressive richness, refreshing acidity, and sweet tannin, this beauty should be approachable in 4-5 years, and last for three decades. WS 93 WA 95 2 bts.

per lot $1,700 - $1,900

184 CHÂTEAU LAFITE ROTHSCHILD 2005 Pauillac, 1er Cru Classé u. 1 x bn. 1 x scraped label. The palate is medium-bodied and beautifully balanced, to wit, a sophisticated Pauillac that priorities elegance and poise over intensity of fruit—in keeping with Lafite Rothschild’s style. You come away with the sense that it will take its time and decline, giving away a great deal in its primacy, even if it is still more approachable than the 2005 Latour for example. Therefore, I would be inclined to set this aside for several more years. Tasted November 2014. WS 98 WA 96 2 bts.

per lot $2,200 - $2,400

186 CHÂTEAU PICHON LONGUEVILLE COMTESSE DE LALANDE 2006 (1) Pauillac, 2ième Cru Classé u. bn. marked label. Tasted at the property, the 2006 Château Pichon-Lalande has a voluminous bouquet with outgoing blackberry, cassis and violets scents, a touch of boysenberry jam tucked just underneath, although it does not quite have the delineation of the Lynch Bages. The palate is mediumbodied with fine tannin. This feels very composed in the mouth, quite fresh with well-judged acidity, harmonious and tensile on the finish. This deserves a higher score than I awarded out of barrel and it continues to improve year by year. Tasted April 2016. WA 94 CHÂTEAU CLINET 2019 (6) Pomerol 7 bts.

189 CHÂTEAU LAFLEUR 2000 Pomerol u. bn. marked label. It has loosened up a little since I last tasted it, but I concur with Robert Parker that if I were lucky enough to have some of these in my cellar, I would wait until 2020 to experience the wine at its plateau. Allowing the wine to open over 30 minutes, I notice an almost flinty scent developing on the bouquet. The palate is medium-bodied, crystalline and symmetrical—everything beautifully focused—almost Left Bank in texture. This had a firm backbone, but that is becoming more “flexible” in recent years, and it fans out with consummate ease on a finish that is so long that it makes “War and Peace” seem like a short read. This is simply magnificent. Tasted February 2015. WA 100 1 bt.

191 CHÂTEAU PÉTRUS 2019 Pomerol u. bn. The 2019 Pétrus is a powerful, heady wine, bursting from the glass with aromas of raspberries, cassis, violets, spices, licorice and kirsch. Full-bodied, fleshy and layered, with an ample core of fruit, lively acids and powdery tannins that assert themselves on the liqueured finish, it’s a ripe, high-octane Petrus that reflects the influence of a dry, warm growing season on what is essentially a single cépage (Merlot) and a single soil type (clay). 197 DOMAINE COMTE GEORGES DE VOGÜÉ BONNES MARES 2009 Côte de Nuits u. 2 x 1 cm. The 2009 Bonnes-Mares is quite big and powerful yet also possesses a seamlessness that is very 2009. Waves of black fruit, spices, menthol and licorice saturate the palate as this large-scaled, dramatic wine opens up in the glass. The Bonnes-Mares boasts a tremendous combination of fruit and sheer structure. The 2009 is more approachable than the 2010 and nearly as dazzling. It will still require quite a bit of time, however, readers need to be patient. Anticipated maturity: 2024-2039. April 2012 WA 96 2 bts.

229 BODEGAS VEGA-SICILIA RIBERA DEL DUERO ÚNICO 2005 (OWC) Ribera del Duero, Spain It’s mostly Tempranillo with some 6% Cabernet Sauvignon, fermented with indigenous yeasts in oak vats and aged for almost six years in 225-liter French and American oak barrels and 20,000-liter oak vats. The extra time in bottle has helped the wine to develop its bouquet, and it feels very aromatic and open, with the classical Vega Sicilia perfume of yesteryear, earthy, leafy and spicy, even if they wine was kept because of its power. It’s still powerful, but at the same time it’s elegant and has a polished mouthfeel and fine-grained tannins. February 2017 WA 96 1 mag.

231 BODEGAS MUGA RIOJA GRAN RESERVA PRADO ENEA 2010 Rioja, Spain u. 3 x 1 cm. It’s never a dark wine, more of a ruby or bright color, and it has a nose of youth, subtle and elegant. But the quality shows in the unbelievable elegance and harmony on the palate, where the tannins are very fine, the flavors are subtle but deep and the length is just phenomenal. This is only medium-bodied, with perfect ripeness and integrated acidity. This should have a very long life in bottle. February 2018 Drink to 2050 WA 97 3 mags.

per lot $400 - $600

233 BODEGAS MUGA RIOJA GRAN RESERVA PRADO ENEA 2015 Rioja, Spain It has a very classical profile, with incipient tertiary notes, perfumed, floral and rich, textured and beautifully balanced. They compare this 2015 with 2009 and 2005 in terms of style but with freshness in the style of 2001 and 2010. It’s enjoyable but should also develop for a long time in bottle. One of the finest Prado Enea vintages. 108,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in November 2018. July 2022 Drink to 2040 WA 97 12 bts.

236 ANTINORI TIGNANELLO TOSCANA IGT 2017 (OWC) Tuscany The Marchesi Antinori 2017 Tignanello (made with Sangiovese and smaller parts Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc) is a dark, exuberant and inviting wine. I tasted my sample after a double decanting and was pleased by the profound nature of the wine and the immediate openness of the aromas. There is a symphony of dark fruit with black cherry, plum, spice and sweet tobacco. I am particularly attracted by a distant hint of medicinal or menthol herb that I also discovered in other wines with fruit from the Tignanello estate in 2017. There’s a drying mineral note of crushed chalk as well. June 2020 Drink to 2040 WA 96 1 mag.

237 TENUTA SAN GUIDO BOLGHERI SASSICAIA 2015 Tuscany u. 1 x bn. This is a confident and proud red wine from Tuscany. February 2018 Drink to 2045 WA 97 3 bts.

241 CANALICCHIO DI SOPRA BRUNELLO DI MONTALCINO LA CASACCIA 2016 Tuscany This is a newish single-vineyard wine (it’s the second vintage) created by Francesco Ripaccioli and the team at Canalicchio di Sopra at the conclusion of an ambitious estate-wide mapping project. The 2016 Brunello di Montalcino La Casaccia draws its fruit from a two-hectare site planted in 1990 with clay soils and rich in mineral components. A precious 4,133 bottles were made. What I like most is the tightness of the fruit, which you chip away at slowly as the wine softens and yields in the glass. Each layer brings you forest fruit, sour cherry, almond, lilac and candied orange peel. On a second swirl, you might get black olive, bay leaf and scorched earth. There are subtle mineral notes, but what La Casaccia ultimately offers is that uniquely compact and extremely polished quality of fruit. November 2020 Drink to 2045 WA 96 6 bts.

243 CANALICCHIO DI SOPRA BRUNELLO DI MONTALCINO RISERVA 2015 Tuscany u. 6 x bn. The Canalicchio di Sopra 2015 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva is a beauty. It offers a brilliant interpretation of a warm and sunny vintage from cool, mineral-rich soils in an area with steep shifts between day and nighttime temperatures. This is one of those special wines in which the vintage characteristics fit the territory with the precision of a jigsaw puzzle. The bouquet is fluid and complex with tart cherry fruit, cola, licorice, aniseed and blue flower. That aniseed comes around a second time. The arrangement and order of those aromas changes with each successive swirl of the glass. This Riserva is fermented in stainless steel and aged in Slavonian oak casks for 36 months. Bottle production is shy of 7,000. November 2020 Drink to 2050 WA 98 6 bts.

245 CASTELLO DI AMA L’APPARITA 2016 Tuscany u. 2 x bn. September 2019 Drink to 2045 WA 99 2 mags.

248 FONTODI FLACCIANELLO DELLA PIEVE COLLI DELLA TOSCANA CENTRALE IGT 2018 Tuscany The wine’s personality reveals brooding darkness and austerity, and these impressions are reinforced by savory tones of cigar smoke and earthy leather. The core of the wine is tight and richly concentrated with generous blackberry and plum. The velvety tannins are integrated but still youthful and grippy. October 2021 WA 98 6 bts.

252 ALTESINO BRUNELLO DI MONTALCINO MONTOSOLI 2016 Tuscany The Altesino 2016 Brunello di Montalcino Montosoli (with 15,000 bottles produced) is a true beauty. The wine reveals dark fruit intensity that comes forth as blackberry, plum and summer cherry. In no time, those aromas shift to the savory side of the spectrum with smoke, tar and tobacco. The results are generous and layered, offering the best of what the celebrated Montosoli cru can offer, especially in an ironic vintage such as this. November 2020 Drink to 2048 WA 96 6 bts.

257 BOLLINGER CHAMPAGNE LA GRANDE ANNÉE 2012 Champagne Disgorged in July 2019, Bollinger’s 2012 Brut La Grande Année is showing well, offering up an incipiently complex bouquet of crisp yellow orchard fruit, fresh peach, orange oil, toasted walnuts and dried apricot that’s still quite reserved with less than a year on cork. Full-bodied, deep and muscular, the 2012 is blockier and broader-shouldered than its 2008 predecessor, with a weightier and even more concentrated palate built around a bright spine of acidity, concluding with a chalky finish that carries appreciably dry extract. 263 POL ROGER CHAMPAGNE CUVÉE SIR WINSTON CHURCHILL 2009 (OC) Champagne Mingling aromas of freshly baked bread, honeycomb, crisp peach, pear and subtle hints of dried fruits, it’s medium to fullbodied, sapid and vinous, with bright acids, a pearly mousse and a long, saline finish. Exhibiting more structure than was apparent on release, this has always been a very approachable Churchill, yet it is really benefiting from age. March 2023 Drink to 2040 WA 96 2 bts.

270 DOM PÉRIGNON CHAMPAGNE ROSÉ 2006 (OC) Champagne 1 x slight damage to packaging The 2006 Dom Pérignon Rosé continues to show very well, unfurling in the glass with aromas of bitter orange, dried white flowers, red berries, toast and woodsmoke. On the palate, it’s full-bodied, broad and muscular, with all the phenolic structure and depth that one would expect from a rosé that contains more than 20% still red wine, concluding with a sapid and chalky finish. As I wrote earlier this year, this is a vinous, gastronomic rosé that numbers among the decided successes of the 2006 vintage. April 2020 Drink to 2040 WA 95 2 bts.

274 DOMINUS ESTATE 2019 Napa Valley u. 3 x bn. The 2019 Dominus is blend of 90% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Petit Verdot and 4% Cabernet Franc, aged in 40% new French oak. Subtle notes of mocha, pencil shavings and almost Graves-like earthiness wind through the concentrated, medium to full-bodied palate, giving it a sense of savory gravitas, while the finish is silky and long, leaving a lingering residue of soft tannins and mouthwatering freshness. 297 CHÂTEAU DUCRU-BEAUCAILLOU 2008 Saint-Julien, 2ième Cru Classé u. 6 x soiled labels. One of the stars of the vintage, and a remarkable achievement in 2008, with impressive richness, this dense purple colored wine is almost as opaque as the 2010. Spring flowers, crushed rocks, creme de cassis and some subtle oak are followed by a full-bodied, concentrated wine that transcends the vintage character in its power, richness, and aging potential. It also exhibits tremendous precision, purity, and depth of character. It is more forward than the 2010 is likely to be, but probably not as sumptuous as the 2009 will turn out to be. This is a wine to buy. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2035. May 2011 WA 95+ 6 bts.

304 CHÂTEAU LA FLEUR-PÉTRUS 2008 Pomerol A major sleeper of the vintage, the 2008 La Fleur Petrus (90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc) is a remarkably sexy, opulent wine that transcends the vintage character. Its dense plum/ruby/purple color is accompanied by notes of sweet black cherries, licorice, truffles and a hint of graphite. Full-bodied with silky tannin as well as undeniable appeal, richness, purity and a 40+ second finish, this is a sure-fire big buy in 2008. Drink it over the next 20+ years. 353 BERINGER VINEYARDS CABERNET SAUVIGNON PRIVATE RESERVE 2004 Napa Valley u. 12 x vts. This spectacular 2004 has notes of barbecue smoke, roasted meats, black currants, licorice and a blackberry-like richness. Hints of coffee bean and white chocolate also make an appearance in this plump, full-bodied, voluptuously textured, dense ruby/purple-colored wine. This is a beauty. The 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon Private Reserve is approaching its late adolescence and should hold beautifully for at least another 10-15 years. April 2014 WA 95 12 bts.

The blockbuster 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon is more primary, but it does display enormous fruit concentration, massive body, and wonderful purity, balance, and elegance. It is an extraordinarily promising 2007 with awesome fruit, depth and richness as well as a long finish. This offering will be even better with 5-7 years of bottle age, and should keep for 20+ years. The flagship 2004 Run Rig is 96.5% Shiraz and 3.5% Viognier with the Shiraz component aged for 30 months in a mixture of new and used French oak. Yields were a minuscule 14 hl/ha (about 1 ton per acre). Saturated opaque purple/black, it has a remarkably kinky, exotic perfume of fresh asphalt, pencil lead, smoke, pepper, game, blueberry and black raspberry. Full-bodied and voluptuous in the mouth, the wine is dense and packed, with amazing purity, sweet tannins, and a complex collection of sensory stimuli. The wine demands 10 years of cellaring and will provide hedonistic delights through 2035+. October 2007 WA 99+ 12 bts.

371 CHÂTEAU MALESCOT ST. EXUPÉRY 2009 Margaux, 3ième Cru Classé u. 2 x bn. 2 x marked labels. An inky/purple color is followed by notes of Asian plum sauce, forest floor, creme de cassis, black raspberries and a floral component that is unusual for a Margaux. A wine of exceptional intensity and purity with a full-bodied, sumptuous texture, lots of fresh vibrancy and excellent definition, this beautiful 2009 exhibits high but sweet tannin. It is more sexy than the 2005 was at a similar age, although their level of extract and concentration is relatively equal. Something about the 2009 reminds me of a Margaux version of St.-Julien’s Leoville Poyferre ... if that makes any sense. Anticipated maturity: 2018-2040. December 2011 WA 96 2 bts.

378 CHÂTEAU HAUT-BAILLY 2009 Pessac-Léognan, Grand Cru Classé u. 3 x vts. 3 x marked labels. The 2009, which has an opaque ruby/ purple color, an extraordinary nose of high-quality unsmoked cigar tobacco, graphite, blackcurrants and spice, hits the palate with a medium to full-bodied, saturated and rich mouthfeel, but an elegant and ethereal quality that is difficult to articulate. It is full-bodied yet elegant, powerful yet delicate, and remarkably velvety-textured, sumptuous and loaded with upside potential. It can be approached now, as most 2009s tend to be, given their richness of fruit, low acidity and extraordinary concentration, but the great complexity that will emerge from this fabulous terroir is at least a decade away, and this wine is set for 50 or more years of longevity. 403 CHÂTEAU MALESCOT ST. EXUPÉRY 2005 Margaux, 3ième Cru Classé u. 3 x bn. 3 x scraped & marked labels. 3 x scuffed capsules. A beautiful wine, once again, from this property that has been on a superb qualitative roll for several decades. Dense ruby/purple with notes of graphite, background oak, youthful crème de cassis and blackberry fruit as well as a floral underpinning, it is medium to full-bodied, textured, rich and impressive. Still in a somewhat adolescent stage, it should hit full maturity in another 2-3 years and last at least two decades. June 2015 Drink: 2017-2037 WA 96 3 bts.

The 2005 Haut Bailly is rapidly turning into a glorious wine. You instantly fall in love with the purity on the nose, luscious red cherries, wild strawberry and blueberry. This is still youthful and beautifully defined. The palate is mediumbodied with quite a structured opening like many in this vintage. It exerts a gentle grip in the mouth, quite tensile and linear and perhaps just tightening up a tad toward the finish. It is biding its time, but it will repay those who cellar this outstanding 2005 for another four or five years. Tasted March 2017. Drink 2022-2050 WS 95 WA 95 6 bts.

407 CHÂTEAU SMITH HAUT LAFITTE 2005 Pessac-Léognan, Cru Classé 1 x wrinkled label. This sensational, opaque blue/purplecolored wine from Smith Haut Lafitte has a gorgeous floral nose with notes of graphite, blueberries, blackberries, and cassis that jump from the glass of this inky, very dense, yet strikingly pure wine. Light on its feet despite its stunning concentration and multi-layered mouthfeel, this wine has fabulous intensity, richness and length. Quite impressive, and still incredibly youthful, this is a superstar of the vintage, and capable of lasting another 25-30 years. June 2015 WA 95 3 bts.

408 CHÂTEAU CALON-SÉGUR 2005 Saint-Estèphe, 3ième Cru Classé u. 2 x bn. 3 x scraped & marked labels. The palate is very intense and disarmingly youthful, almost ferrous on the entry with layers of ripe black fruit that segue into an earthy finish (with a curious light tang of Marmite on the aftertaste!). It is a fabulous Calon Ségur, though the millennial wine might ultimately possess greater precision. We will see. Tasted March 2015. Drink: 2020-2050 WA 94 3 bts.

413 CHÂTEAU LÉOVILLE POYFERRÉ 2008 Saint-Julien, 2ième Cru Classé u. 3 x bn. 3 x marked labels. One of the finest over-achieving efforts in this vintage as well as a “best buy” for a top-flight St.-Julien, this 2008 is an irresistible success. It reveals an opaque ruby/purple color, lots of unctuosity and a boatload of sweet cassis and black cherry fruit intertwined with notions of licorice, smoke and oak. Full-bodied, remarkably concentrated and stunningly pure and textured, this sensational wine is already drinking well, and will be even better with 2-3 years of cellaring. It should last for 2025 years. Bravo! May 2011 Drink: 2013-2028 WA 94 3 bts.

420 CHÂTEAU LA CONSEILLANTE 2008 Pomerol u. 3 x bn. 1 x scraped label. 3 x marked labels. The beautiful 2008 exhibits a dark plum/ ruby/purple color as well as jammy red and black fruit, crushed rock and floral notes. If this were a Burgundy, one might think of it as a grand cru Musigny. With excellent texture, medium to full body and stunning purity as well as nobility, this fascinating Pomerol should drink well for 15-20 years. May 2011 WA 95 3 bts.

422 CHÂTEAU LA FLEUR-PÉTRUS 2008 Pomerol 2 x marked labels. A major sleeper of the vintage, the 2008 La Fleur Petrus (90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc) is a remarkably sexy, opulent wine that transcends the vintage character. May 2011 Drink: 2011-2031 WA 95 3 bts.

424 CHÂTEAU CANON-LA-GAFFELIÈRE 2005 Saint-Émilion, Premier Grand Cru Classé B u. 3 x bn. 3 x stained labels. This fragrant, lush, seductive wine offers up plum, Christmas spices and crème de cassis. This dense garnet/purple wine also has loads of blackcurrant and black cherry fruit, terrific aromatics, a full-bodied mouthfeel, beautiful purity, texture, and a long, long finish. Once again, the Comte von Neipperg and his winemaking consultant Stéphane Derenoncourt have hit a home run in this vintage. This beauty is approachable, if not drinkable already, and should continue to evolve for 10-15 years. June 2015 Drink:2015-2030 WA 94 3 bts.

437 SAXUM BOOKER VINEYARD 2005 Paso Robles 2 x wrinkled & peeling labels. 3 x cracked wax capsules. A blend of 92% Syrah and 8% Grenache, the 2005 Booker Vineyard is the debut vintage of this 400-case cuvee produced from a hillside vineyard situated on the west side of Highway 101. It exhibits plenty of crushed rock, sweet black fruit, and underbrush/forest floor characteristics along with sweet tannin and a structured, muscular personality similar to a northern Rhone. Big and powerful yet precise and well-delineated, it should drink nicely for 10-15 years. The bottled 2005s are all performing well. June 2008 WA 94 3 bts.

per lot $400 - $600

438 SAXUM BOOKER VINEYARD 2008 Paso Robles The 2008 Booker Vineyard (92% Syrah and 8% Mourvedre, which had also been bottled immediately before my visit) has an opaque purple color and a wonderfully sweet nose of black cherry, black currant, licorice, incense, and some Asian spices. The wine has seamless lushness, a voluptuous texture, stunning purity, and a very long, 40-second-plus finish. Booker is another top site that I believe was planted with Justin Smith’s help. It is a 40-acre vineyard sitting on similar limestone soils. This incredible wine would probably benefit from a couple of years of cellaring, as the structure is more present, no doubt due to the high level of Syrah in the wine. August 2010 WA 98 2 bts.

439 SAXUM BROKEN STONES 2007 Paso Robles u. 5 x vts. The 2007 Broken Stones (71% Syrah, 18% Grenache, and 11% Mourvedre) is a gorgeously seamless wine with an inky/ blue/purple color, a tight but promising nose of blue and black fruits, incense, charcoal, and extraordinarily pure black raspberry and blackberry fruit, fabulous concentration in the mouth, velvety, wellintegrated tannins, and a mind-bogglingly long finish. The wood is already totally concealed beneath the cascade of fruit in this medium to fullbodied, pure and majestic wine. This concentrated, dense, but nevertheless strikingly elegant, multi-layered wine has a finish of 45+ seconds. It builds incrementally to a crescendo and finale. This is a stunner that can be approached already, but promises to be better in another 5-10 years and last at least 25 or more years. June 2015 WS 97 WA 98+ 1 bt.

478 CHÂTEAU MOUTON ROTHSCHILD 1989 Pauillac, 1er Cru Classé u. 1 vts. 2 x ts. 3 x wrinkled labels. Tasted from magnum and presented by Baron Philippe Sereys de Rothschild, the 1989 Château Mouton-Rothschild might not reach the ethereal heights of the 1982 or 1986, but it is certainly a lovely Claret. It has an attractive, slightly leafy bouquet armed with cedar and pencil lead. There is less fruit concentration than I expected, resolutely classic, slightly austere Bordeaux. The palate follows suit. Tasted February 2016. Drink: 2016-2035 WA 93 3 bts.

480 CHÂTEAU PÉTRUS 1999 Pomerol u. 1 x bn. 1 x wrinkled label. This wine is turning out much in the style of such wonderful Petrus vintages as 1967 and 1971. Although not as outstanding as either the 1998 or 2000, it displays beautiful intensity and finesse in a more evolved style than one normally expects from this estate. The wine has a dense, nearly opaque ruby/purple color, sweet black cherry, mulberry, truffle-infused fruit, full body, low acidity, admirable purity, and sweet tannin. It should be ready to drink in 5-6 years, and will last for two decades. Anticipated maturity: 2007-2030. Only 2,400 cases were produced. WA 94 1 bt.

484 CHÂTEAU MOUTON ROTHSCHILD 1995 Pauillac, 1er Cru Classé u. bn. Bottled in June 1997, this profound Mouton is more accessible than the more muscular 1996. A blend of 72% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Cabernet Franc, and 19% Merlot, it reveals an opaque purple color, and reluctant aromas of cassis, truffles, coffee, licorice, and spice. In the mouth, the wine is “great stuff,” with superb density, a full-bodied personality, rich midpalate, and a layered, profound finish that lasts for 40+ seconds. There is outstanding purity and high tannin, but my instincts suggest this wine is lower in acidity and slightly fleshier than the brawnier, bigger 1996. Both are great efforts from MoutonRothschild. 490 PENFOLDS GRANGE 1998 South Australia u. vts. A wine that flirts with perfection, and should rival the 1986 as one of the legendary Granges produced, the 1998 has one of the highest alcohol contents (nearly 15%) as well as one of the highest percentages of Shiraz in the blend (97%). Its stunning purple color is accompanied by exceptionally sweet aromas of blackberry liqueur intermixed with barbecue spices, an endearing, smoky earthiness, pepper, roasted meats, and coffee. Huge, massive, unctuously textured, and extraordinarily youthful, this impressive wine is a candidate for perfection. It should continue to evolve over the next three decades. Drink 20092039 WS 97 WA 98+ 1 bt.

491 PENFOLDS GRANGE 2001 South Australia u. 1 x bn. 2 x marked labels. 3 x recessed corks. 2001 is undeniably one of the top examples of this wine. At this stage, it appears to eclipse the 1998 and 1996. Inky/blue/purple to the rim, with a stunning perfume of blueberries, blackberries, chocolate, graphite, and earth, it boasts good acidity, huge tannins, magnificent concentration, and a multilayered, textured mouthfeel. It is a big, but impeccably well-balanced Shiraz that should shed some of its structure and tannin over the next 4-5 years, and be at its best between 2010-2030+. October 2016 WA 98+ 3 bts.

496 CHÂTEAU PICHON LONGUEVILLE COMTESSE DE LALANDE 2000 Pauillac, 2ième Cru Classé u. 3 x bn. 3 x scraped & marked labels. Dense purple in color, with loads of coffee, mocha, creme de cassis, and chocolate notes, this is a somewhat unusual blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 34% Merlot, and a whooping 10% Petit Verdot, with a little bit of Cabernet Franc. The Petit Verdot certainly gives the wine more of a tapenade, floral note, which I think can be interpreted by some as herbal. This is a rich, opulent, stunning Pichon Lalande that is beginning to drink beautifully, yet should continue to improve for at least another 10-15 years and last 30 or more years. June 2010 Drink: 2020-2050 WA 96 3 bts.

505 CHÂTEAU LAFITE ROTHSCHILD 1998 Pauillac, 1er Cru Classé u. vts. stained label. scraped capsule. irregular cork. April 2001 WS 95 WA 98 1 bt.

507 PENFOLDS GRANGE 1998 South Australia u. vts. marked label. Possibly the “wine of the vintage,” the 2008 boasts an inky/blue/purple color as well as a glorious perfume of spring flowers, blueberry and blackberry liqueur, camphor, truffles and crushed rocks. With great fruit on the attack and mid-palate, a medium to full-bodied, multidimensional mouthfeel and a skyscraper-like finish, this prodigious effort over-delivers, even for this phenomenal terroir. Give it 5-8 years of cellaring and drink it over the following 40-50 years. May 2011 Drink: 2016-2066 WA 98 2 bts.

CHÂTEAU PAVIE MACQUIN 2000 (2) Saint-Émilion, Premier Grand Cru Classé B u. 1 x bn. 1 x vts. 1 x scraped label. A beautiful crushed rock/liqueur of minerality characterizes this inky/purplehued St.-Emilion. Tannic, with lots of pure black raspberry and black cherry fruit intermixed with a notion of charcoal as well as the aforementioned rocky/ powdered stone component, this long distance runner requires another 5-6 years of cellaring. It should age easily through 2030+. June 2010 WA 95+ CHÂTEAU PAVIE MACQUIN 2003 (2) Saint-Émilion, Premier Grand Cru Classé B u. 2 x vts. 1 x scraped label. 6 bts.
