Paul Haas Music Director & Conductor SoNA Music Director Paul Haas enjoys a distinctive career as conductor, composer and installation artist. His guest conducting engagements have included performances with Orchestra of St. Luke’s, San Antonio Symphony, the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra, and the New World Symphony, among others, as well as festival appearances.

Over the last decade, he has written commissions for a wide variety of iconic venues, including the Park Avenue Armory and Rubin Museum of Art in New York, Grace Cathedral in San Francisco, the Anchorage Museum of Art in Alaska, and

In addition to his positions as Music Director of SoNA and the Thunder Bay Symphony in Ontario, Canada, Haas is the founder and Artistic Director of Sympho, a trailblazing concert production company that creates powerful and emotional musical experiences, collaborating with leading artists and using unexpected performance methods and unorthodox venues.

Heather Schmidt Piano Heather Schmidt is internationally recognized as a composer and pianist through performances, broadcasts, commissions and awards in Canada, the United States, Russia, France, Germany, Switzerland, Poland, the Czech Republic, England, Cyprus, Mexico, Brazil, and the British West Indies. Born and raised in Calgary, Alberta, Heather is currently based in Los Angeles. Heather began studies in piano at the age of 4, and composition at the age of 5. She pursued double majors in piano performance and composition throughout her musical education. She studied at Juilliard in New York City and at Indiana University, where, at age 21, she became the youngest student to receive a Doctor of Music degree. Heather’s extensive catalogue of compositions includes works for solo instruments, chamber ensembles, orchestra, and vocal/ choral genres. She has received commissions from prestigious sources such as the CBC (Canadian Broadcasting Corporation), Canada Council for the Arts, the Alberta Foundation, WDR (Westdeutsches Rundfunk in Germany), the Elaine Kaufman Cultural Center, the New York State Council for the Arts, the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, and the Harvard Musical Association. She has composed the imposed test pieces for several international

competitions including the Banff International String Quartet Competition, the Ester Honens International Piano Competition and the Eckhardt-Gramatté Competition, and the CBC Young Performers Competition. She has held numerous composer residencies, including a long-term residency with the Hamilton Philharmonic Orchestra. In addition to concert music, Heather composes scores for film, television, and video games. Her recent film scores include Jurassic School/Netflix, Empire of the Sharks/Syfy, Break-Up Nightmare/Lifetime, Elvis Lives!/AXS TV and the video game Homesick. She also writes and directs films. For her most recent film MAN OF FIRE starring Lance Reddick (John Wick, Bosch, Fringe, The Wire) she was screenwriter, director and composer. On the film festival circuit, it received 21 awards, including 3 awards for Best Director, 3 awards for Best Female Director, 2 awards for Best Short Film, 4 awards for Best Fantasy Film, 4 awards for Best Soundtrack/Composer. A huge animal lover, Heather has many rescue pets – 5 dogs, many cats, 2 horses, 2 pigeons and some fish. Her two non-profit dog rescues, Hollywood Huskies in Los Angeles and Halo Husky Haven in Calgary, have saved over 1,000 dogs. Find out more at heatherschmidt.com.
