Review of 2015 Safety Day The annual Back to School the Safe Way fair sponsored by the Phoenix Library Board was a tremendous success.

National Library Week

This year’s event was held right outside the library doors.

Due to the weather, some stations were held inside the Kennedy gym. Each year, the library board, usher’s the children in the Village of Phoenix back to school with a fair. The goal is to get the kids excited for learning and to provide them with a little fun along the way. The Board enlists help from other organizations in the community.

Celebrate National Library week April 10-16.

There will be special programs and activities for you and your families. Take time during this week to see how the library is enhancing the lives in our community.

The kids were greeted by Sparky, the Phoenix Fire Department mascot. They were able to learn about the fire engine, all of its equipment and even sit in the driver’s seat.

The Phoenix Police Department was also onsite to make identification cards for the students.

The day included games, face painting, a bounce house, refreshments and raffles. Two lucky winners won Kindle Tablets. But most importantly, all the students received bags filled with school supplies.

The Back to School the Safe Way fair is held each year, in August. Make sure to stop by the Phoenix Public Library for information on our year round events.

FAMILY READING NIGHT The Phoenix Public Library has been celebrating Family Reading night since 2002; The State of Illinois declared that the third Thursday of November is “Family Reading Night”.

This effort is to encourage families to spend more time together whether it’s reading or playing a game.

Don’t Let This Little Thing Scare you

Last year, our annual program was held on November 14, 2015 at the Multi-Purpose Center and we gave away many prizes: tablets, games, and bikes. Our evening concluded with the one and only ‘Reptile Man’ who bring exotic reptile animals to show our children. Also in collaboration with School District 151, we recognized all of our Phoenix Students who participated in the reading contest that was held at their school.

We hope these efforts will motivate families to take time enjoy each other as often as they can with reading and games.

The Phoenix Public Library is offering free Computer classes to its adult residents.

Come in and conquer your fear of the computer. Class will run for 8 weeks, 2 hours per week. . For more information or to sign up, please call the library at 708-596-5515.

Come in as a beginner, leave as an expert.

CRAFT CLASS Are you interested in learning how to be creative of keeping your precious photos and keepsake memories? Scrap Booking classes will be held every fourth Saturday of each month. Classes start at 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Phoenix Public Library (Barack Obama Learning Center). Mrs. Dudley will instruct the classes. Spaces are limited, so please sign up today.

All meetings are open to the public.

Friends of the Phoenix Public Library Dorothy Carter Book Club Would you like to expand your reading horizons? The Dorothy Carter Book Club is the right place you! The meetings are every third Monday of each month and are led by Mrs. Elizabeth Loggins at the Barack Obama Learning Center, at 6:30 pm.
