Some relief ahead for skills shortage

CHANGES TO IMMIGRATION POLICY MEAN EASIER ACCESS TO OVERSEAS TALENT IN THE COLLISION REPAIRERS AND AUTOMOTIVE REFINISHERS CATEGORIES, BUT MORE NEEDS TO BE DONE, ACCORDING TO THE MTA

The addition of two automotive roles to the immigration Green List is great news, but there’s more work to be done to solve the skills shortage facing many businesses in the sector.

That’s the call from the Motor Trade Association (MTA) in response to the announcement that collision repairers and automotive refinishers have been added to the Green List.

MTA chief executive Lee Marshall says MTA, in close collaboration with the Collision Repair Association (CRA), had advocated strongly to the Government to include the roles.

“We know the skilled labour shortage is the number one issue facing many of our members,” Lee says.

“It’s causing financial and emotional stress for many business owners, who face longer hours, delaying their retirement, or even closure in some cases.

“These roles are also crucial for keeping Kiwis safe on the roads, and ensuring repairs are carried out quickly and professionally, so we thank the Government for listening to us.”

According to the CRA’s latest data, the industry needs around 1000 collision repairers and refinishers. Vehicle repairs can take between six and 12 weeks as a result.

And most collision repairers are family-owned businesses that are already under considerable

financial pressure. In an industry where most of the revenue comes from a small number of insurance companies, businesses face pressures on both sides of the equation.

In its election year call to the next Government, Driving New Zealand Forward, MTA also called for the processing of overseas applications to be sped up and simplified — members say it can currently take months for an application to be processed.

And Lee says in any case, the Green List additions are only a short-term solution.

“The Green List is a welcome short-term fix. But employers want to hire local talent and give upand-coming young Kiwis a step into the industry.

“At the moment, we just don’t have the number of good apprentices that employers need. We need some answers, direction, and involvement with Te Pūkenga, which to an outside eye is in a state of confusion.

“We need automotive businesses to have a greater say and involvement in how training is developed and run. MTA previously had representatives on the board of MITO and we were supportive of the move to Te Pūkenga, and what was originally sold as increased voice and representation in the vocational system. In reality, the opposite has been true — we have probably never been further away.”

Lee also says the Apprenticeship Boost scheme, which pays employers $500 a month for first and second-year apprentices, should be extended.

“It’s helped more than 60,000 apprentices across a range of industries get roles, but it’s due to finish at the end of next year. There is also no doubt the government could get better bang for buck with a system targeted to role types in shortage.

“We’ve urged all political parties to remove the uncertainty and make it permanent — it works.”

The Motor Trade Association (Inc) (MTA) was founded in 1917. MTA currently represents

approximately 3800 businesses within the automotive industry. Members operate businesses including automotive repairers (both heavy and light vehicle), collision repair, service stations, vehicle importers and distributors, and vehicle sales. The automotive industry employs 62,700 people and contributes around $5.5 billion to the economy.

Electric state of the nation

DRIVE ELECTRIC’S FIRST STATE OF NATION REPORT LAYS OUT PROGRESS TOWARDS ZERO EMISSIONS TRANSPORTATION AND ENERGY INDEPENDENCE FOR NEW ZEALAND

Drive Electric, a not-for-profit with a mission to accelerate the uptake of e-mobility in New Zealand, has released the first ever State of the Nation report.

State of the Nation | E-mobility in New Zealand 2023 demonstrates that electrifying the transport system will drive energy independence for New Zealand, lower costs for businesses and families, and contribute to environmental improvements.

The report explores all aspects of the electric transport ecosystem in New Zealand up to 30

9.5 times in the past five years.

• The Clean Car Programme has provided more than 100,000 rebates and reduced the average emissions of newly registered vehicles by 21%.

• Wellington has the highest market share of EV registrations, Canterbury has the highest number of public chargers.

• 24% of all bus registrations in New Zealand were electric in 2022.

• It’s forecasted that by 2035, a household with two EVs will have 51% lower household energy bills.

Kirsten Corson, Drive Electric deputy chair, says, “We are proud to release this report as it shows New Zealand has made considerable progress with the uptake of e-mobility, particularly in the light fleet.

increase generation but also ensure our distribution infrastructure is ready to support this uptake. We encourage policy-makers and regulators to give EDBs the mandate to enable this growth.

“This is possible, since 1996 we have added enough generation capacity to our energy system to support two to three complete EV fleets. It’s also great for households. It’s forecasted that by 2035, a household with two EVs will have 51% lower energy bills.

“The report is unique in that it is not all about passenger cars. We can see that our bus fleet is

June 2023. It covers global trends, energy and charging infrastructure, light vehicles, heavy transport, commercial vehicles, buses, marine, aviation, bikes, batteries, consumer and fleet trends, policy and more.

The report contains 78 pages of comprehensive analysis, but some highlight facts include:

• Globally EV sales have increased 730% since 2017.

• In 2022 there were 343 models of EV available worldwide, the biggest brands being BYD and Tesla.

• Average range has doubled in the last 10 years, and average prices have fallen almost US$10k.

• In New Zealand, the light EV fleet has increased

“We’ve seen that the Clean Car Programme has really contributed to this progress. It’s a policy that has driven down the price for New Zealanders and attracted greater supply to New Zealand. In time it will start to populate the second hand fleet, making EVs accessible to more New Zealanders.

“However, the report shows there is still so much more to do. Despite the progress, EVs remain at around 2 % of the light fleet. Now is the time to double down, and strive for more than 2 million EVs on our roads in the mid-2030s. There is so much benefit to be gained, such as cheaper fuel prices for households, fewer emissions, less air pollution, and less reliance on foreign oil.

“The report also shows that we have to significantly advance charging infrastructure. Charging infrastructure underpins all forms of e-mobility, and we need to rapidly increase the availability of public charging and encourage households and businesses to adopt smart charging technology.

“As we decarbonise the economy, our demand for renewable energy will soar. This could be 6070% higher by 2050. We’ve got to make sure we can

making real strides towards electrification, with 24% of registrations electric in 2022. There are some green shoots in our marine sector too, with electric ferries docking in Wellington and Auckland. And we could see electric planes carrying passengers in our skies as early as 2026.

“Heavy transport remains a challenge, but trucks have started to arrive in our fleet — there are more than 100 so far. The investment cases for electric trucks can be challenging, but the emissions reductions from electrification are significant. We want to take that opportunity to the next Government and say — there’s real bang for buck here, let’s get the settings right.

“Globally, this report shows that e-mobility in all forms are the vehicles of the future. With our advantages of renewable energy, New Zealand is well positioned to take advantage of this technology and benefit financially and environmentally. Let’s invest and reap the rewards.”

How brake boosters work

HAVE YOU EVER STOPPED TO THINK HOW THIS PIECE OF TECHNOLOGY THAT MANY TAKE FOR GRANTED ACTUALLY FUNCTIONS? BENDIX HAS, AND HERE THEY EXPLAIN HOW THEY WORK

The reason not a lot of effort is needed when braking — even with the average car probably weighing over two tonnes — is thanks to the brake booster, which essentially amplifies the force at the brake pedal to something much greater.

There are a couple of different brake boosters available, the most common being a vacuumtype brake booster. Fitted to the engine bay firewall, a vacuum-type booster features a vacuum connection on the face of the canister. If you can imagine a cutaway of the canister, on the inside you’d find a rubber diaphragm that separates the chamber in two, a return spring, an air valve, and a push rod that passes through the booster and connects to the pedal.

A vacuum-type brake booster works by using the

engine’s vacuum system via this connection — the booster amplifies the pressure of the brake pedal on the brake master cylinder, and in turn, the brakes themselves.

When the brake pedal is applied, the push rod that passes through the master cylinder opens the air valve within the brake booster. This allows air to enter the rear-facing side of the diaphragm within the booster, increasing pressure on that side. This forces the push rod even further into the piston within the master cylinder.

It’s important that a vehicle’s brake booster is in good working order as it not only leads to a more comfortable driving experience, but also in emergency braking situations it can mean the difference between having an accident or just a scare.

For added braking performance, aftermarket brake boosters are available, including Bendix’s Ultimate 4WD Brake Booster upgrade. Designed to be ADR compliant as well as a direct bolt-in replacement for original equipment brake boosters, the Bendix Booster increases braking performance by up to 30 per cent.

Most OEM brake boosters use a single diaphragm, but the Bendix Booster boasts dual diaphragm construction. Dual rubber diaphragms within the brake booster work to effectively double

Virtual mechanics

VIRTUAL REALITY, ONCE THE DOMAIN OF TECH ENTHUSIASTS, HAS NOW PERMEATED OUR EVERYDAY LIVES. WHAT EXACTLY IS VIRTUAL REALITY, AND HOW CAN IT RESHAPE THE AUTOMOTIVE TRAINING, DIAGNOSTIC, AND REPAIR INDUSTRIES?

Virtual Reality immerses users in computergenerated, three-dimensional environments, making them feel physically present within the digital world. Achieved through head-mounted displays (HMDs) and motion-tracking sensors, VR allows users to interact with this virtual realm just as they would in reality. Beyond its gaming roots, various industries, including automotive diagnostics and repair, are harnessing VR’s potential.

VIRTUAL, AUGMENTED AND MIXED REALITIES… REALLY?

It might seem like the differences are minor, however, the differences between virtual, augmented, and mixed realities are significant and they can each have their place in the automotive repair and training ecosystems.

Virtual Reality (VR): Offers total immersion in a separate digital world, often experienced through HMDs or gloves. It finds applications in gaming, simulations, and training. Demands specialised equipment, including HMDs and motion-tracking sensors for complete immersion.

Augmented Reality (AR): Overlays digital content onto the real world, enhancing users’ perception without disconnecting them from their surroundings. AR commonly runs on smartphones, tablets, smart glasses, or wearables.

Mixed Reality (MR): Blends elements of both VR and AR, seamlessly integrating virtual objects into the real world, often used in industrial design, architecture, and prototyping. It allows users to see digital ‘objects’ as placed within real environments, or vice versa. Combines headsets with handheld controllers to merge physical and virtual worlds.

For simplicity, we will refer to VR as a general term encompassing AR and MR in this article.

VR AND AUTOMOTIVE TECHNICIANS

VR is poised to revolutionise many industries and is already being trialled and extensively used in industries such as architecture and building management, as well as medical and veterinary. In the automotive technician training sector, the possibilities are several:

Enhanced training and education: VR enables trainees to immerse themselves in virtual environments, simulating real-world repair scenarios. This fosters practical skills and experience without the need for expensive equipment or risking actual vehicles. Although excellent for theory and beginners’ practice, it might not be the best for more advanced students who need to feel the weight of tools and get the hand dexterity required for the job.

Simulation-based practice: Technicians can hone their skills safely in a controlled environment, reducing the risk of damaging customer vehicles and instilling confidence.

Advanced diagnostics and troubleshooting: VR allows technicians to visualise complex vehicle systems in three-dimensional space, improving efficiency and accuracy. Real-time data, interactive simulations, and digital repair manuals streamline diagnostics.

Remote assistance and collaboration: Technicians can receive guidance from experts worldwide through VR headsets, reducing costs and improving repair quality. Remote experts can guide and annotate in real-time. This technique is already being used widely in complex medical procedures with worldwide experts virtually dialling in to surgery and consultation rooms.

Engaging customer experience: Some auto shops employ VR to provide customers with interactive and informative experiences. Customers can virtually walk through the repair process, enhancing trust and understanding. Likewise, it allows busy customers or those in remote areas to troubleshoot problems that can be easily fixed without needing to come into the shop.

While the potential of VR in automotive training is undeniable, challenges like the initial cost and potential discomfort need addressing. As technology evolves, we anticipate further advancements that will redefine the automotive repair landscape. Embracing VR will lead to improved efficiency, accuracy, and customer satisfaction.

FORD: A VR CASE STUDY

In recent years Ford adopted a VR solution developed by Bosch to train technicians for the Mustang Mach-E. This training method enabled technicians to understand the workings of the allelectric vehicle without needing a physical model.

Bosch’s virtual reality training solution employs gaming-like VR technology to instruct technicians in repair procedures through gamification, assessing their learning effectiveness. According to Dave Johnson, director of Ford service engineering operations, technicians entered a simulated and gamified world, eliminating the need for physical Mustang Mach-E vehicles. This VR training tool empowers technicians to comprehend the components and processes required for servicing high-voltage systems, boosting their confidence in performing diagnostics and maintenance tasks.

Technicians used VR headsets to learn how to diagnose and service the vehicle’s high-voltage system, covering tasks such as main battery removal/installation and battery pack service and maintenance. Bosch is also working on extensions that will allow technicians to virtually enter the vehicle and navigate modules as if they were moving through rooms, aiding in problem identification and repair.

Geoff Mee, director of operations for Bosch, emphasised that this VR training enhances efficiency by improving diagnostics, enabling quicker and easier maintenance and repairs. The system can serve as an ongoing training tool within the Ford technical training program, making it possible for technicians to acquire specialised skills. Moreover, it positions the automotive repair profession as hightech and forward-thinking, potentially attracting new talent. Technicians can access the training from any location, making it highly versatile.

The upgraded Audi Q8

AUDI IS UPDATING THE FLAGSHIP OF THE Q FAMILY WITH AN UPGRADED DESIGN AND NEW TECHNOLOGY. WE FIND OUT MORE

The Q8 is the perfect balance of performance and quiet luxury,” says Greg Leet, general manager of Audi New Zealand. “Now with added design elements and upgraded technology, the Q8 sets a new benchmark that Kiwis have grown to expect from the brand with the four rings.”

So… what does it look like? The revised Q8 presents a SUV coupé with short overhangs and long wheelbase that make for sporty, elegant proportions that can be accentuated with distinctive exterior colours and wheels.

The upright Audi singleframe with an octagon design now sports vertical inlays. They are arranged vertically in the base exterior and designed in

the shape of an L in the S line exterior package.

The Q8’s appearance is highlighted by the new prominent air intakes, which are clearly integrated into the car’s basic architecture. The new exhaust system with premium quality tailpipes is aligned even more closely with the SQ8 TFSI, where the S-line exterior package stands out with its clearly accentuated side air intakes in the front bumper.

High intensity LED headlights light up the road in the Q8 as standard, with matrix LED headlights available as an option.

New for the top-of-the-range headlights are digital daytime running light signatures, which give the Q8 its unmistakable appearance by allowing the user to select one of four individual light signatures via the MMI. For the first time, the Q8 also features heavily digitised OLED rear lights, which also feature four digital light signatures in conjunction with the headlights.

The digital OLED rear lights in the Q8 incorporate a proximity indication feature that works in tandem with the assistance systems. When vehicles from behind come within two metres of the stationary Q8, the control units trigger the activation of all the digital OLED segments.

of this year. We’re also about to launch a home electricity offer targeted specifically for EV drivers and work with our business customers on tailormade charging solutions.

Keeping rust away keeps the vehicle inspectors at bay

WET AND WINDY WEATHER HAS BEEN CO-OPTED INTO EFFORTS TO ACCELERATE THE RENEWAL OF NEW ZEALAND’S VEHICLE FLEET AS IT PROMOTES TELLTALE RUST. AUTOBLAST IS FIGHTING BACK, KEEPING VALUABLE VEHICLES ROADWORTHY, SAVING BOTH MONEY AND RESOURCES

Most vehicle owners will have noted that New Zealand’s vehicle inspectors have become laser focused on rust. Many otherwise roadworthy vehicles have

been refused warrants or certificates of fitness because of the appearance of surface rust, often on the underbody. Tales of people importing apparently roadworthy vehicles from the UK which then failed registration here due to the presence of rust are now commonplace.

David Kirkham, director of specialist underbody coatings company Autoblast, says even relatively new vehicles can quickly fall prey to these stringent inspections.

“It’s not a matter of thin paint or poor preparation on cheaper vehicles,” says David. “Even some of the most expensive and sought after modern utes can fail within

two or three years, just because of the conditions we have here.”

He explains how the cooler temperatures mean condensation will settle on a vehicle overnight and if it’s not hot, especially if the vehicle is not used the next day, it won’t dry out. And if there is salt on the surface — any vehicle used around the coast will pick up salt from the air — the rusting process will soon be racing away.

David says manufacturers build vehicles for global conditions, not the moist, temperate, marine environment we have here — and most of New Zealand is technically a marine environment to some degree.

David says the owner of any vehicle, especially utes used to tow boats or recreational vehicles that visit coastal environments, should consider underbody protection as a way to protect their investment.

After suffering high fleet replacement costs, David says several fleet companies around the country have turned to Autoblast to protect their investment.

While cheaper wax oil protection systems have been around for years, they soon wear off, and they are quickly breached by stone chips. Autoblast’s unique thixotropic coating retains its original thickness and actually self-heals in the event of a stone chip or cut. A range of treatment services are available from Autoblast’s skilled applicators, including a complete underbody galvanising process.

ADRAD for quality radiators

IMPROVE MARGINS FOR YOUR BUSINESS

How often do you spend your valuable time ringing around to get three or four prices for a part for your customer? Have you ever calculated what your time spent doing so would cost at your hourly charge-out rate? Sometimes saving your customer money — that they didn’t even know they were saving — can cost you a lot more than just your time.

The warranty or rework that follows, just because you saved your customer a few bucks, or you chased a little more margin, costs you both time, and more importantly, your reputation.

Customers come to you to solve a problem and they entrust their vehicle to you to make the right decision. When it comes to radiators, why risk supplying anything other than a quality Adrad radiator?

Adrad are experts and have been serving New Zealand since 1934. We only make and supply highquality radiators, sourced from recognised brands.

Don’t be fooled into supplying your customers with a cheap radiator that won’t last — supply them with one that’s fit for purpose. Adrad radiators are manufactured to OEM standards and exceed both the design and performance specifications of the vehicle. We have a low warranty rate and better performance than most radiators on the market.

With Adrad’s top sales service, a nationwide network of radiator specialists, and industry-leading after-sales care, why risk saving your customer money when you can give them peace of mind — a job done once, done properly.

Our radiator designs utilise both aluminium and copper alloys, which mean a much better build quality and heat dispersion. A custom-made radiator solution from Adrad will lower coolant temperatures faster, while offering greater reliability under the stresses of high temperatures. Your customers will notice the improved performance and fuel economy — a much better option than saving them a few dollars on a cheaper, inferior radiator, especially with all the associated risks.

Doors open to careers in collision repair for New Zealand youth

AMI, STATE AND NZI’S SPECIALIST VEHICLE REPAIR CENTRE, REPAIRHUB, IS BUILDING AN IMPRESSIVE APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAMME TO ATTRACT NEW TALENT INTO THE INDUSTRY

The collision repair industry as a whole has been struggling to find enough talented workers for some time now,” says Dean MacGregor, AMI, State, and NZI executive general manager, supply chain and adjacencies, “and with New Zealand’s growing population, we need to ensure we’re set up to support customers when they need us.”

Repairhub is a state-of-the-art vehicle repair service, with seven facilities across Auckland, Christchurch, and Hamilton, and more in the pipeline. The team runs a comprehensive apprenticeship programme, overseen by a dedicated training manager. There are also support technicians in Auckland and Christchurch who work alongside the apprentices to mentor and support recruits with their studies.

Gary Geeves, CEO of Repairhub says, “At the moment, we have 22 apprentices across our sites. But we’re ambitious to grow that; we aim to be the place to come for young people wanting to start out in the collision repair industry.”

Repairhub apprentices are taken through the

New Zealand Qualification Authority’s Level 3 programme with exposure to all four sectors of the Repairhub business — detailing and grooming, stripping and assembling, panel beating, and painting.

On successful completion, trainees can then move to Level 4, where they begin to specialise in either panel beating or painting.

Gary adds, “Students who choose to focus on painting at Level 4 get a chance to learn advanced techniques in painting and awareness of all the new tech coming through. Panel beating students in Christchurch have the benefit of our dedicated training area, which consists of two classrooms and an open plan workshop where they can work on cars.”

All up, the programme runs for three to four years, giving trainees a New Zealand Certificate in Collision Repair and Automotive Refinishing, which opens employment opportunities for them in the industry.

Repairhub is actively recruiting for more people

to join the programme, promoting it through job fairs, women in trades expos, school visits, and career days. The team is also working with the Hanga-Aro-Rau Workforce Development Council to attract more Māori apprentices and permanent Repairhub team members.

“This isn’t just about Repairhub, but about contributing to the wider sector as well,” says Gary. “We work closely with MITO (Te Pūkenga) and other private repairers to ensure our training is up to date and relevant. Ultimately, it’s about ensuring we are leading the way in collision repair and are offering excellent service to our customers.”

To find out more about the apprenticeship programme at Repairhub, please visit repairhub.co.nz, or email careers@repairhub.co.nz.

Corghi: Technology for easy tyre changing

WE EXPLORE TYRE CHANGERS MADE BY ONE OF THE WORLD’S LEADING MANUFACTURERS OF PREMIUM INNOVATIVE AUTOMOTIVE WORKSHOP EQUIPMENT

In 2001, Corghi, a leading innovator in vehicle assistance equipment, introduced ‘Leva la leva’, which means ‘without lever’ in Italian. This groundbreaking concept revolutionised tyre changers by eliminating the need for levers, reducing rim contact, and preventing tyre damage. These machines use hydraulic power, pneumatics, and specialised mounting heads to gently grasp and evenly apply pressure to remove tyres without sidewall force.

The Smart Corghi System is now the sole technology in the market that avoids touching the rim and eliminates tyre tension during demounting/ mounting. This technology powers some of Corghi’s leading tyre changers — the Artiglio Master 28, Master Jolly, and Master Jolly Automatic.

CORGHI ARTIGLIO MASTER JOLLY AND MASTER JOLLY AUTOMATIC

Artiglio Master Jolly and Jolly Automatic both have the Smart Corghi System technology at their core and offer it in a price range that has been impossible until now. A perfect synthesis between tested constructive quality, unique technological solutions, and a competitive

perfect balance. Both of these machines offer ergonomic and multifunctional consoles, a dynamic bead breaking device with dual specular bead breaker disc, and a wheel lifter for effortlessly placing wheels of any type onto the turntable. The tool arms and controls are divided into three distinct work areas making it easy to recognise the required movements, making the job simple and intuitive for the operator.

The Master Jolly can handle wheels from 12 to 28 inches in diameter and tyre widths up to 14 inches. It comes with a wheel lifter which effortlessly lifts and tilts wheels of any type onto the turntable, enabling staff to stay fresh and focused.

The only remaining physical task in operating the machine is placing the spindle through the centre of the wheel to centre and locate it. However, the Corghi Artiglio Master Jolly

pneumatically clamping the wheel. The Jolly Automatic offers a quicker and more universal wheel clamping system especially useful in very busy workshops where speed is of the essence.

THE ARTIGLIO MASTER 28

The Master 28 is a product that operates perfectly on every type of wheel, for an unrivalled technical and economic investment over time. It includes ergonomic and multifunctional consoles with a display that makes it possible to electronically set the rim diameter and automatically obtain the positioning of the work tools in a quick, practical, and safe manner.

A dynamic

bead breaking device with dual specular bead breaker disc replaces any manual positioning by the operator. This guarantees precision and repeatability. It also features automatic wheel clamping, and a bead depressor with adjustable working height. The fixed work position, pedals, consoles, and wheel loading are all on the same side allowing for constant working height and less operator movement.

There are three main types of brake systems available across the performance, direct replacement, and 4WD sectors.

PERFORMANCE

DBA performance products offer the simplest and most cost effective brake upgrade with no modifications required to your vehicle. Perfect for those looking to make their vehicle track day capable.

DIRECT REPLACEMENT

The crew at Racer Products has been very excited about the arrangement and it seems their customers have too, as they have been ordering parts before an official announcement has been

The Street Series product range is aimed at the OE-replacement market and was developed with three objectives in mind — offer a product that performs better than OE, is competitively priced, and offers market leading vehicle coverage. Street Series products restore vital braking system performance levels in passenger cars, SUVs, and light commercial vehicles.

4WD

Have you increased your 4WD’s gross vehicle mass (GVM) or tuned your engine for better fuel efficiency and towing power? If so, it is important you consider how this extra weight and power can affect your braking system and stopping distance. DBA can help you explore their off-road performance products to find the right brake solution for your 4WD.

PADS

After leading the market for decades, DBA’s performance brake rotors complained they’d done enough of the heavy lifting, and frankly they have had their time to shine! So DBA’s R&D team decided to give them some friends by their side, and something to share the limelight with — a range of complementing performance brake pads. Now the two are best mates, offering customers the perfect brake upgrade for any vehicle application.

While DBA has firm Australian roots, the company has grown over time into a truly global player, servicing the world through eight distribution centres across Australia, New Zealand, and the USA, distributors on all continents, and exporting to over 30 countries.

For New Zealand customers, the ordering process is simple. Visit dba.com.au/au-part-finder/ where you can enter either the rego, VIN, make/model of the specific vehicle you are servicing and the parts finder will serve up the entire list of available parts. Otherwise, you can either enter a DBA part number and the site will give you all the information needed or you can cross reference.

Subaru Solterra announced

THE HIGHLY ANTICIPATED PRICING FOR THE SUBARU SOLTERRA HAS BEEN ANNOUNCED RECENTLY FOR THE ALL-ELECTRIC, ALL-WHEEL DRIVE SUV, ARRIVING IN NEW ZEALAND IN DECEMBER

There will be two Solterra variants available for the New Zealand market, the Solterra and Solterra Touring.

The All-Wheel Drive (AWD) Solterra features 18-inch alloy wheels, along with a 10-way power driver’s seat, front seat heaters, and a power rear tailgate — all for $79,990* Recommended Retail Price (RRP).

Among its many additional features, the Solterra Touring adds 20-inch alloy wheels, wireless phone charging, memory driver and passenger seats, leather upholstery, Harman Kardon speakers, plus heated

steering wheel and rear seats – priced at $84,990* RRP.

Powered by two electric motors producing 160kW, the Solterra variant will have a range of 465km, while the Solterra Touring’s range is 414km. However, like a petrol car, the exact range depends on a variety of factors.

Managing director of Inchcape New Zealand and Subaru of New Zealand, Wallis Dumper, says the wait for Solterra has been worth it.

“The best performances are never rushed, and Subaru Corporation has taken the time to develop an electric SUV worthy of wearing the Subaru badge,” Mr Dumper says. “We are thrilled that the $79,990 Solterra model will be eligible for the Clean Car Discount Rebate. We cannot wait to see the first Solterras heading home with Kiwi owners in December.

“Our All-Wheel Drive Solterra will allow us to take electric to places it’s never been able to reach before.

Like all our Subaru SUV models, both Solterra variants feature the

United Auto Workers strike

X-Mode AWD control system that enhances the sense of security on rough roads.”

Solterra also benefits from the new Grip Control function, which enables the vehicle to run at a constant speed while stabilising the SUV.

Mr Dumper says Subaru’s future focus is on durability, better tech and more space, which the Solterra has in spades. “Sitting roughly size-wise between a Forester and Outback, Solterra is spacious enough for family adventures, powerful enough to take on the most remotely beautiful corners of Subaru country, and has enough range to get to where you’d rather be.”

THE UNITED AUTOMOBILE WORKERS (UAW) STRIKE IN THE UNITED STATES HAS BEEN MAKING HEADLINES WORLDWIDE. IF THE STRIKES CONTINUE, THE IMPLICATIONS MIGHT REVERBERATE AROUND THE GLOBAL AUTOMOTIVE INDUSTRY

As one of the largest labour strikes currently underway — an estimated 140,000 workers across various States are reported to have agreed to the strike — it has the potential to disrupt the supply chain, affecting not only the US but also countries like New Zealand, which relies heavily on imports of cars and car parts.

It is also expected that the strikes will play a role in the upcoming presidential elections there.

The UAW strike, which began in recent weeks, involves thousands of workers at major American automakers, including General Motors, Ford, and Stellantis (formerly Fiat Chrysler). The primary issues at stake are job security, wage increases, and benefits in light of large CEO payouts and record profits. With labour unions demanding better working conditions and higher compensation, negotiations are progressing at a slow pace, leading to the strike’s continuation.

The US automotive industry is an integral part of the global supply chain, with many international car manufacturers relying on American-made components and vehicles. As the strike continues, its ripple effects are likely to be felt worldwide, particularly in countries that rely heavily on vehicle and part imports.

With the UAW strike disrupting production and supply chains, global consumers including New Zealand could face challenges such as delayed

deliveries, increased costs, inventory shortages, and market uncertainty should the strikes continue for much longer.

NZTA to conduct dealer survey

RANDOMISED VISITS TO CAR DEALERSHIPS AROUND THE COUNTRY ARE EXPECTED TO TAKE PLACE UNTIL END OF THE YEAR

The NZTA has contracted Hoed Research NZ to do some nationwide research to help them understand the extent to which dealers are currently using vehicle safety rating labels.

Waka Kotahi is hoping to understand the extent to which vehicle safety rating labels are currently being displayed by registered motor vehicle dealers. This will inform future communication, education, and other activities they hope to undertake with the industry.

Visits to a randomly selected sample of new and used car dealerships around the country will be happening over the next few months. If your dealership is one of those visited, NZTA request that you allow the surveyor (from Hoed) who will have ID and an official letter of authority, to walk around your site to gather the relevant data.

Once they have permission to proceed, they will walk around the dealership and record the safety rating on each label displayed, or ‘no label’ as appropriate. No photos or videos will be taken, and no specific vehicle information will be recorded.

Waka Kotahi has expressed that the use of safety rating labels is not regulated and this is not a compliance check. Data collected will be compiled to form a baseline of summarised results and individual results will be kept confidential by the government organisation.

The site visits are expected to happen around the country from mid-September for a period of up to three months. They will happen Monday – Friday, during business hours, and approximately 300 site visits — new and used car dealerships — will be undertaken nationwide.

Results from each completed site visit will be compiled and NZTA has committed to sharing the key findings with

VIA and other organisations, so they can work with the Government as needed on any future communication and education activities.

This survey is independent of the Vehicle Emissions and Energy Economy Label (VEEEL) compliance audit implemented by EECA.

Giltrap Motorsport team manager Owen Evans, who has managed championship winning teams for more than two decades and is the New Zealand land speed record holder, says: “The combination of a world-class racecar and a professionally run team means the scholarship winner will experience an international level environment, with everything from set-up to data and even media training delivered by industry leaders. It really is the dream seat.”

Race proven equipment from SP

Tools will assist the team in preparing the McLaren 570GT4 during the 15-race season. SP Tools have committed to a long-term partnership with the programme as part of their ongoing commitment to supporting New Zealand Motorsport.

SP Tools joined SMEG as foundation partners of the Giltrap Motorsport Junior Scholarship, SMEG continuing a decade-long relationship with Giltrap Group backed race teams.

The 570GT4 will feature a combination of McLaren and New Zealand colours, and will be unveiled, along with the scholarship winner at the official opening of Giltrap Motorsports HQ, Garage 66, on 19 October.

The choice of car is especially fitting in McLaren’s 60th year and Giltrap Group’s 10th year as a McLaren dealer. It also celebrates Sir Colin Giltrap’s lifelong passion for motorsport.

BLACKFERN COOPERATIVE CONTINUES TO IMPROVE THE FUNCTIONALITY OF THEIR ONLINE EBITS VEHICLE PARTS REQUEST SYSTEM

It’s about making it quicker and easier for both the workshop and the supplier,” comments Blackfern IT director George Rose. “Workshop owners don’t want to waste valuable charge-out

time sitting on a phone. With eBits they can send out a request, and suppliers only reply if they have the product.”

VEHICLE PARTS REQUEST FUNCTION

The Blackfern eBits system enables you to select the vehicle you’re working on; describe the parts you’re after by using just a couple of tick boxes; maybe take a photo or two; and let our suppliers know what you need in the comments box. The request generates a request to Blackfern suppliers for you, informing them of what you’re after and how best to contact you.

The system has made it easier for you to connect your workshop to our suppliers. Best of all… it is absolutely free for all parties to use.

In addition, as a Blackfern member, while you’re on the app you can also view the latest promotions, and track your fuel spend. You can even order from our rewards store using eBits on your mobile phone or tablet. With our eBits web app, your Blackfern account is really easy to manage.

Sign into your Blackfern account and download our eBits web application to your phone. You will then have the power of Blackfern at your fingertips whenever you need it.

FIND A SUPPLIER QUICKLY

Use the Blackfern eBits app to quickly find a supplier, their branch addresses, email, and phone number. The app provides a direct link to phone lines at the touch of your fingers. With eBits you no longer have to sit in front of your computer as you have the Blackfern supplier directory right there on your mobile phone or tablet.

Nissan becomes a fully EV marque in Europe

NISSAN, THE COMPANY WHICH LIT THE SPARK THAT ELECTRIFIED THE AUTOMOTIVE INDUSTRY, IS TODAY COUNTING DOWN TO AN ALL-ELECTRIC LINE-UP IN EUROPE

With many countries debating when to ban sales of internal combustion engines, Nissan is pressing ahead with plans to achieve 100% EV in Europe by 2030, with all new Nissan models from now to be all-electric in Europe.

With capability to design, engineer and build vehicles in the UK, and building on the brand’s core strengths of electrification and crossovers,

the switch will also support Nissan’s drive towards carbon neutrality.

“EV is the ultimate mobility solution. More than a million customers have already joined our journey and experienced the fun of a Nissan electric vehicle, and there is no turning back now,” said Makoto Uchida, Nissan President and CEO.

“EVs powered by renewables are key to us

achieving carbon neutrality, which is central to our Ambition 2030 vision. Nissan will make the switch to full electric by 2030 in Europe — we believe it is the right thing to do for our business, our customers and for the planet.”

The commitment comes as Nissan continues its investment programme in its European Design and R&D teams, both of which are marking historic anniversaries by advancing their cutting-edge work on future vehicles and technology.

FUTURE MODELS AND BATTERY TECHNOLOGY MAKING EV EVEN MORE ACCESSIBLE

Globally, under Nissan Ambition 2030, Nissan is introducing 27 electrified vehicles, including 19 EVs, by 2030. In this period Nissan is also introducing cobalt-free technology to bring down the cost of EV batteries by 65% by 2028.

Nissan also aims to launch EV with its proprietary all-solid-state batteries (ASSB) by 2028. With the introduction of breakthrough ASSB, Nissan will be able to expand its EV offerings across segments and offer more dynamic performance.

Two future Nissan EVs have already been confirmed for Europe, including an all-new compact EV which will succeed the iconic Nissan Micra as the entry-level vehicle in the Nissan lineup. The other vehicle will be built at Nissan’s recordbreaking UK plant in Sunderland, as part of the £1bn EV36Zero project, a blueprint for the future of automotive, bringing together EV manufacturing, battery production and renewable energy.

NOBODY KNOWS WHAT HAPPENED TO THIS 1950S STYLE ICON, BUT ITS LEGACY LIVES ON IN THE CARS IT INSPIRED

In this column, as you are probably already aware, we like to take a look at the more unusual side of automotive history. The oddballs, the failures, the revered, and the misfits are what we love to share with you all. And if we had to choose one particular time and place that proved the most fertile of grounds for this sort of quarry, it’d have to be Detroit in the mid to late fifties. It was the time of the birth of the concept car, it was when car shows became a part of American life, and it represented an absolute explosion of creativity, lateral thinking, and big ideas — not all of them necessarily good ones, by the way.

We’ve already looked at a couple of standouts from this fruitful era in previous issues, and now we’re back, ready to dive into what could arguably be one of the best, and one that influenced future production sports cars over the next decade. It’s time to take a look at Oldsmobile’s XP400 Golden Rocket concept, which debuted at the 1956 GM Motorama.

As with many other iconic cars of the era, GM’s design boss Harley Earl was the driving force behind the Golden Rocket, and as GM’s marketing department accurately proclaimed in its 1956 Motorama promotional material “the supersonic age comes to automotive styling”. To look at, the incredibly sleek Golden Rocket is an early science fiction fan’s fever dream. A swirling mix of jet-age design and pure Buck Rogers’ kitschy space rocket

aesthetics – it was what the future looked like, at least to the designers of the time. Running on a shortened 105-inch wheelbase Oldsmobile chassis, the Golden Rocket is not excessively long for an American car, although the substantial projectileshaped, tri-tipped front end with integrated

‘Dagmar’ bumpers, upside-down U grill, and inboard lights, along with the protruding jet-fighterinspired rear, complete with fins and massive chrome faux jet exhausts, do push the length to a little over five metres. Killing any sense of bulk, though, is the height — the roofline measured in at only 127cm, making for a very long and low silhouette that gave the impression of speed, even

when stationary. Although the rear split window had been seen before in Europe, this was something new for the US, and would go on to make a brief appearance on the C2 Corvette a few years later. The extraordinary curves of the concept car were predictably coated in a deep metallic golden hue, giving the machine a distinctly bullet-like appearance from the side.

Due to the car’s low height, GM’s engineers had to get creative when it came to ingress and egress if the driver or passenger ever wanted to retain any sense of dignity after parking up at the local bowling alley or drive-in movie. This problem was solved by creating a unique roof panel that popped up on each side when that side’s door was opened.

While this was happening, the deep blue and goldupholstered seat also lifted nearly 100mm and pivoted outwards, and the steering wheel — which was telescopically adjustable and housed a speedometer in its centre — also swung upwards and out of the way.

Despite all this design extravagance, the Olds was shockingly lightweight, coming in at a reported 1130kg, thanks to its fibreglass body construction. This made for some surprisingly

favourable — if untested — sporting abilities, as GM had fitted a healthy Oldsmobile 324ci Rocket V8 that was supposedly tickled up to 275 horsepower. The debut of the Golden Rocket at the ’56 Motorama could be considered a rousing success, proving very popular with the public — no doubt enamoured with its ultra-futuristic themes that, to them, must have seemed only a few years away. After the conclusion of the show, the car began a tour of events and dealerships across the States, lasting far longer in the public eye than the vast majority of other GM ‘dream’ cars, as they were often known.

With that said, by the early sixties, the sleek coupé fell off the radar completely and despite years of investigation and wild goose chases, no one has been able to pin it down. There is a very good chance, of course, that it was destroyed as was GM’s policy of the time when it came to oneoff cars and liability. However, there are a lot of people out there who suspect this beautiful piece of automotive art was saved from the crusher due to its longer public tenure. Rumours — most of which have turned out to be unfounded or at least unverifiable — suggest that it could still be out there somewhere, collecting dust under a tarp. If — and that’s a big if — this car ever surfaces again, it’ll be a big win for automotive historians everywhere.

This was a hugely important Motorama concept car and despite not being the best known of the bunch, it’s one that perhaps best exemplifies this incredible era of jet-age American automotive optimism and creativity.

WELLINGTON ELECTRIC MOTORCYCLE DISRUPTOR MAKES NZ MANUFACTURING HISTORY AND LAUNCHES EQUITY CROWDFUND

After making New Zealand history with a production run of 100 motorbikes and reinstating the type of automotive manufacturing not seen on our shores since the 90s, Wellington electric motorcycle disruptor FTN Motion is launching an equity crowdfund to allow retail investors and customers to join in their growth journey.

The company is scaling up local assembly capacity as well as preparing to enter Australia and Europe, backed by investors who have been on board with FTN’s mission since their first capital raise in 2021.

Now, after high demand from customers and others outside of the wholesale investor criteria, a retail raise through investment platform Equitise, with a target of $3 million, is opening giving everyday investors the opportunity to be part of taking a unique Kiwi innovation to the world stage.

FTN Motion has gone from a single prototype of its Streetdog motorcycle to full production in the space of just two years. The Streetdog is creating a new category of design-led urban motorcycles that appeal to commuters who want to escape the mundane and reduce their daily emissions, says co-founder Luke Sinclair.

“We’re on a mission to reduce congestion and decarbonise the commute. We want to accelerate the transition to emissions-free transport and help NZ achieve our net zero carbon emissions goals by 2050, so we’ve built an urban riding machine that not only challenges convention but also turns the everyday commute into the best part of the day,” he says.

The Streetdog is converting car drivers to electric two-wheel mobility with industry-first innovation; it features natural-fibre composite motorcycle fairings, 80 kilometres of battery range, a touchscreen display, alarm-activated wheel lock and regenerative braking as well as 30 litres of lockable storage. Each bike — which only requires a regular New Zealand car licence to ride — is built in FTN

Motion’s Wellington workshop. Ninety per cent of Streetdog’s first customers come from outside the moped market. With FTN Motion already capturing 5 per cent market share in their first year of deliveries, the growth potential is huge, Sinclair says.

“We’re at the intersection of two massive growth trends — electrification and micro-mobility. The EV revolution has only just begun. It is an industry that will continue to grow as countries worldwide push to reduce emissions.

“We’re bringing a fresh, design-driven approach to motorcycle development to create the most intuitive and user-friendly product on the market and we’re ready for growth. Our investment raised to date has been driven by our earliest supporters and we’ve allocated those funds towards the recruitment of industry experts, research and development, and production set-up. With motorcycle deliveries now underway and a global supply chain in place, investment from this round will fund manufacturing process and tooling upgrades as we gear up for our next fully subscribed production run and our market entry into Australia. Our target is to scale our annual production capability to 700-plus bikes for local and Australian deliveries in 2024.”

FTN Motion recently closed the first phase of its $3m raise with the $1m target secured through wholesale investors on Catalist, Sinclair says.

Equitise founder Jonny Wilkinson says FTN Motion is exactly the type of business they look to partner with.

“They’ve developed an innovative, customerdriven product, built a passionate community of brand advocates, and are led by a team of smart, skilled professionals. These are all key ingredients for a successful Equity crowdfund,” Wilkinson says.
