Senate'll intervene in farmers, herdsmen clash—Saraki By Henry Umoru & Joseph Erunke

BUJA—SENATE President, Dr. Bukola Saraki, yesterday, promised that the Senate would intervene to find a lasting solution to the continued clashes between the Fulani herdsmen and farmers across the country. Saraki, who described the perennial clashes between the farmers and herdsmen as unfortunate, however, appealed to them to maintain peace at all times. He spoke yesterday when a group of herdsmen from Kautal Hore Socio-Cultural Association, Jigawa State branch, visited him.
Earlier, Chairman of the group, Umar Hadejia in his speech entitled Appeal for an intervention, said the Fulani were traditionally a nomadic and pastoral people, who reared their cattle and sheep across the vast territory of Nigeria as the largest nomadic group in the world. He lamented that due to urbanisation, there had been an increasing trend of conflict between farmers and the pastoralists, largely due to the Fulani seeking fertile grazing lands for their developmental purposes. This, he said, had resulted in violent attacks and reprisal counter-attacks.
