rior to the home film-projectors of the mid-to-late 1930s, the ability to bring the charm, humor, and entertainment of Mickey Mouse and his friends into the home was very limited. One of the best solutions to this problem was the creation of Mickey Mouse themed books. These books were often filled with colorful imagery of the characters, as well as games, jokes, and songs that would mirror the fun experiences one would have from watching a theatrical Mickey Mouse cartoon. These books were incredibly popular, and in addition to providing affordable children’s entertainment, these Mickey Mouse books helped to lay the foundation of incorporating Disney characters into the home and family life. The David McCay Company of Philadelphia was the first commercial publisher of these Mickey Mouse Books. “The Adventures of Mickey Mouse Book 1” was first printed in hardcover in 1931, and was later reprinted in different formats as well as overseas. McCay eventually gave up his license in 1939, with the books he produced over the years bringing enjoyment to countless numbers of children and families.
