Christmas Shines in Claremore There is something very special about the Christmas spirit in 2021.

ovember, 2021: Christmastime comes early and stays late this year in the city of Claremore. Let your heart warm to the Christmas spirit and veritable host of fun meaningful activities for every member of the family. Behind the scenes, Santa’s elves – notably Tanya Andrews with Visit Claremore, Layla Freeman and Nancy Phelps with Light of Hope, and an army of staff and volunteers have been making their lists and checking them twice to ensure months of fun, safe Christmas activities for the 4

Claremore community and its holiday guests. Thursday, Nov. 18 Ne-Mar Christmas Tree Lighting & Free Photos with Santa Claus “First off, we’re going to be kicking off the Christmas season at 6 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 18, with a tree lighting celebration at Ne-Mar Center,” Andrews began. “There will be hot cocoa and cookies, with Safenet providing the hot cocoa and Visit Claremore providing the cookies, all of which will be free. “Not only that, but Santa will be on-hand to visit with the children

and to be available for photos – also for free,” she continued. “We’ll have a community prayer being offered by some of our local church community members, after which, we’ll light the tree and officially kick off the Christmas season in Claremore.” Some of the merchants at NeMar Center, located at 1000 W. Will Rogers Boulevard in Claremore, may opt to stay open for extended hours due for the evening, Andrews said, allowing some to get started on their Christmas shopping early. Dickens on the Boulevard is a Victorian-themed Christmas festival which will be in its 26th year this year. Light of Hope’s “Illuminating Hope” Christmas light tour and celebration also will be a part of the seasonal activities. “Last year was our first ‘Illuminating Hope’, at which we did a memory tree and luminara walk at the lake, with a Christmas light drive throughout Rogers County,” said Layla Freeman, Light of Hope founder. “People would pick up maps at various locations around town and go on a Christmas light tour all-around town, with the lake being one of

the lake since they were creating a drive-thru light display, and it seemed like a perfect tietogether. We’ll still have various destinations (for Christmas light displays), as well. As part of “Illuminating Hope,” Light of Hope will have its Transformation Tree near the Lake Ranger’s station, at which people can park, draw closer to the tree and pay tribute to their loved ones. “We’ll have volunteers to help people at the luminaria walk and the Transformation (Christmas) Tree,” Freeman said. “The tree is lit up with white lights, but people can choose a colored bulb that’s the favorite color of a loved one,

which then replaces one of the white lights – it’s a special moment of reflection. “Nearby this is a circular area where people can write a message to a loved one or someone they miss on a luminaria bag, which our volunteers fill with sand and a tea light, and people can then place this on the luminaria walk,” she said. “It’s very meaningful.” Nov. 18 – Dec. 17 Light of Hope Santa Claus & Christmas Stories, Gifts of Hope Light of Hope also will be hosting its own Santa Claus, complete with a gazebo and Christmas trappings, every Friday at Ne-Mar Center, beginning with the tree lighting and through Dec.17 from 6-9 p.m. for pictures. During the tree lighting, Santa also will be reading a Christmas story to the children. In addition to the lake activities, Light of Hope also will be hosting “Gifts of Hope” from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Dec. 4 at the Light of Hope office at 403 W. First Street in Claremore, to allow more opportunities for early Christmas shopping, with proceeds to benefit Light of Hope. Light of Hope is a Claremorebased 501(c)(3) nonprofit ministry for addiction and other life difficulties, assisting families and individuals through support groups, community education, school drug education, workplace readiness, helpful resources and encouragement for the future. Andrews said the city will “flip the switch” for the Christmas light drive-thru Nov. 27.

Will’s Country Christmas will be held at the Birthplace Ranch in Oologah Dec. 3 and 4, and the Will Rogers Memorial Museum will be offering photos with Santa at 2 p.m. on Dec. 4 and the 11th. Claremore’s Christmas Parade will be held Dec. 4 at 5:30 p.m. and will be a drive-thru tour at Rogers State University.

Nestled in rural northern Claremore, Hope Harbor serves just such a purpose, helping families to find shelter from the sometimes rough waters of life, to heal, and to move forward from trauma or other difficulties. Among those who help facilitate

that recovery are Dirk O’Donnell and Stephanie Steward. “Hope Harbor is a place that gives families a chance to heal,” said O’Donnell, Hope Harbor executive director. “Our main focus is to help families who apply for their child to come here because life at home with that child or life at school has gotten to the point that the parents aren’t sure what to do with them. One of the biggest things, from my perspective, is people who partner with us – either financially, or through thoughts and prayers – they’re providing a path forward to families that are really at the breaking point. “Something I talk about quite a bit is our partners and donors providing the tools and support for these kids to move forward in life,” he

continued. “One example of this would be our nine step program, which both the kids and the families work through while the child lives here on campus. It helps establish for the children a foundation of respect – respect for themselves, respect for others and respect for the environment, the area that’s around them.” Students who participate in the program live on the Hope Harbor campus, from nine months to a couple of years, depending upon their need and rate of healing. While on campus, they receive an education from certified instructors at the institute, while living on-site in the cottages, giving them a sense of home stability and purpose, as they continue their education. “Meanwhile, the parents have a similar program that they’re going through at home, and at least once a month, are here on campus to undergo counseling with the kids,” he said. “Oftentimes, they might have a couple of sessions a month, depending on where they are in the program. The kids also have weekly counseling on their own – that’s the support aspect of it. As far as the tools aspect goes that could include the education they receive at our academy, or while living at the cottages and learning responsibility through chores, taking care of themselves, learning proper boundaries and respect for those around them.” A large part of both the academic and living aspects of Hope Harbor involve instilling confidence and selfworth in the students, as many come from backgrounds involving trauma. “Hope Harbor provides a kind of test environment for kids to safely learn how to deal with the effects of their past experiences, which are often the root of their struggles, and handle them in a productive rather than a negative way so that they can handle the challenges that face them when

‘Tis the season for Will’s Country Christmas BY TOM FINK

ovember, 2021: Christmas, more than any other time of the year, is a season for homecomings and a time for family traditions. As the Yuletide season approaches, so do holiday traditions and the opportunity for generations young and old to make memories. A seasonal tradition and Rogers County favorite will be returning to Oologah again this year, with the chance to experience the Christmas season as it was during the time of Will Rogers at the Will’s Country Christmas celebration. “This will be our seventh year to host this event, and it’s one that’s really grown in attendance over the last couple of years,’’ said Tad Jones, Will Rogers Memorial Museums executive director. “Even last year, when many usual Christmas events and activities were canceled (due to the pandemic), we held ours and had record crowds. It really turned out well for us, and everyone who came truly enjoyed themselves, so we

wanted to bring that back again, as it’s becoming something of a tradition for many families.” Named in honor of famed Oklahoma actor/author/ broadcaster Will Rogers, Will’s Country Christmas is a seasonal celebration as it might have been held during the heyday of Will himself, giving friends, couples, and families in attendance the chance to peek into yesteryear, and what Christmas might have been like during the simpler times of the late 19th century. Many of last year’s favorites will be returning again this year, Jones said. “Some of the returning favorites this year will include a shooting gallery, a Wild West hay ride, storytelling, kids crafts and 19th century games, carriage rides, a

Christmas-themed Wild West shootout, music, pictures with Santa at the Birthplace, which, like admission, will be free and more,” he said. “We want to emphasize that this is very much a ‘family friendly’ event, so parents of very young children have nothing to worry about, as far as appropriateness goes, especially with regards to the ‘shootout’,” he said. “When we came up with the idea for Will’s Country Christmas, it was when we’d heard that Dry Gulch was going to be going away,

and we wanted to have something, albeit on a smaller scale that parents could bring their children to for the Christmas season that was along the lines of the Christmas Train at Dry Gulch, so it’s very much centered around kids Speaking of which, Jones said a Christmas train has recently been added to the festivities, and vendors and food trucks to be on-site to satisfy those who bring their hunger, or those who want to get some early Christmas shopping done during their visit. Vendors scheduled to be on hand include Scensty, Paparazzi Jewelry, The Western Pearl LLC, The Dusty Duck Route 66 Mercantile, Wild Oaks Décor, Shawna’s Kiss and Makeup, Melinda’s Tupperware, Kari’s Color Street Nails, Mended with Nature, Remedy Health, Usborne Books, Anderson Lighting, The Happy Llama, Rustic Euphorium and Christmas Photo Booth, with more expected. Food trucks planning to be present include Linam up Grill, The Rockin Little Dog House, The Pink Flamingo and Curnside Comfort. Even as national and world events continue to unfold and areas of uncertainty arise, with the approach of Christmas, Jones said he felt it was more important than ever to maintain the traditions of Christmas.

“This (event) is something that’s very much in the spirit of Will (Rogers),” Jones said. “You know, Will tried to bring normality during difficult times, and we want to do the same – have something that people can count on, rely on, and experience something which brings people together in unity. I’m thankful that we’ll be able to do that again this year.” Attendees are encouraged to observe safety protocols as they feel comfortable, but masks are not required at this event. Jones said that previous years attendance has grown with each year – into the thousands – a trend he hopes to replicate again this year. “As always, the weather can make all the difference as far as attendance goes – we’ve had good weather in the past, and we’re hoping for the same again this year,” he said. “When we came up with the idea for Will’s Country Christmas, we wanted something to which families could come, take their time, roam, shop, relax, do crafts, and have multiple things for the family to do together to get into or feel the Christmas spirit. Now, after a number of years, this (event) has grown

larger and larger, and we have people who’ve come from all over the state to experience it. We hope that will continue, and that we’ll have great weather for this event.” Will’s Country Christmas will be held Friday, Dec. 3, and Saturday, Dec. 4, at the Will Rogers Birthplace Ranch in Oologah., 9501 E. 380 Road. News from the Indian Women’s Pocahontas Club The Indian Women’s Pocahontas Club is Oklahoma’s oldest, continuous chartered club. Established in the summer of 1899 at Oowala, in the Cooweescoowee District of the Cherokee Nation in Indian Territory, it began as a ‘past-time club’ for Native women returning home in the summers from seminaries and colleges. Today, the club remains active in cultural preservation and community service. Based in Claremore, the membership’s dedication to Cherokee and local history is inspiring and commendable.
