• Within a few years they were earning enough money to allow the entire family to move from their tiny house into a six-bedroom home where six sisters and five brothers lived with their parents and their grandma. The singing sisters were treated no differently than the other siblings and still had to take their turns doing dishes and other household chores.

The Lennon Sisters The Lennon family of Venice, California, was a large Catholic family with 11 siblings born in the 1930s and 40s. They all crowded into a two-bedroom home, and their father supported them all on a milkman’s salary. Except for the size of their family, their life was quite ordinary - until fate changed things when the four oldest sisters were destined for fame as “America’s Sweethearts of Song.”

• Sisters, Dianne, Peggy, Kathy, and Janet, discovered at an early age that they loved to sing and could harmonize well together. They formed a singing group when they were in their teens and sang occasionally for school and church functions. A classmate of theirs happened to be Larry Welk, the son of orchestra leader and TV personality Lawrence Welk.

• Their first hit was a single released in 1956 called Tonight, You Belong to Me. It reached #15 on the charts, and was followed a few years later by a 1961 single, Sad Movies Make Me Cry, which provided them with the only #1 single of their career. They turned out albums of classic songs, as well as coloring books, paper dolls, and story books. • They were regulars on the Welk show until they began branching out on their own. The quartet became a trio from 1960 to 1964 when eldest sister Dianne married, left the group, and rejoined again later. Peggy sang the high harmony part, Kathy the low, and Janet and Dianne sang the middle and lead harmonies. • In 1969, the sisters left the Lawrence Welk Show completely in order to star in their own variety show called Jimmy Durante Presents the Lennon Sisters Hour. • Six weeks before the show premiered, they received the shocking news that their father, William Lennon, had been murdered in cold blood by a derranged stalker. The killer, Chet Young, believed himself to be married to Peggy The Lennon Sisters: To page 4
