the tutorials, inspiring lectures, project group meetings and one-on-one mentor meetings take place. The name of the building is symbolic for University College Twente. A citadel is a fortress protecting a town, sometimes incorporating a castle. The term derives from the same Latin root as the word ‘city’, civis, meaning citizen. It is meaningful that, in a fortification with bastions, the citadel is the strongest part of the system. Having the Citadel building located in the middle of the campus symbolizes the close connection that University College Twente has to various fields of research and education (social sciences, science, technology, nanotechnology etc.).

Spread over 150 hectares of park land, our safe and attractive campus provides an academic and social environment that houses approximately 3,000 students. As an ATLAS student, you will have full access to all oncampus facilities, including the fastest Wi-Fi internet connection in Europe, a world-class research library, student associations, and extracurricular activities. Living on campus also means direct access to our sports facilities, grocery store, restaurants, cafés and bars, and health services.
ENSCHEDE – A TRUE STUDENT CITY Wonderful weekly markets, cosy cafés and busy shopping arcades are an integral part of the street scene – as are the beautifully maintained parks and historic house facades that often conceal a museum or a theatre behind them. However, the city’s unique flair comes from the students – cycling to the university, lying at the shore of the Rutbeek lake reading, or simply enjoying a meet-up at the market square. Enschede and its students go hand-in-hand. It’s hardly surprising as academics account for almost a third of the city’s population of 157,000. In addition to the University of Twente, the Saxion University of Applied Sciences and the Artez Institute of the Art, there are also three institutes of science education and research. The hub of student life is the campus of the University of Twente with its modern educational buildings, laboratories, student housing, sport facilities, as well as bars, restaurants, and a theatre. One hears languages from all over the world in the city – but it’s still easy to get to know people as the tightknit community of the university and the city’s wide range of leisure activities make finding friends a breeze.
