SPRING 2023

DEPARTMENT NEWS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

edition of the Department of Surgery newsletter.

HARWELL WILSON SURGICAL SOCIETY TURNS 50

With the impending academic year, it is with great pleasure that we introduce and welcome our incoming class of new general surgery residents. They are a spectacular group of talented individuals from a highly competitive match. As usual, we owe a debt of gratitude to Dr. Alexander Feliz, Program Director and Ms. Cynthia Tooley, Program Coordinator for their tireless efforts. Thank you also to all of the faculty members who gave of their time to participate in the interview days.

The Harwell Wilson Surgical Society is celebrating 50 years of providing critical education, research, and training resources to the Department of Surgery residents. This year’s celebration will kickoff with an alumni reception on Thursday, June 8 at Old Dominick Distillery. On Friday, June 9, our annual Department of Surgery Research Symposium will be held in the Nash and Mooney Buildings on the UTHSC campus. The traditional awards ceremony and graduation banquet will take place at the Peabody Hotel in Memphis.

This past month, the Department had the privilege of hosting Dr. Wayne Frederick, President of Howard University as the 2023 Alpha Omega Alpha Distinguished Visiting Professor. Dr. Frederick is a renowned academic leader and surgical oncologist who provided a superb lecture and engaged extensively with UTHSC students, residents and faculty.

Dr. Julie A. Freshiclag will serve as the Harwell Wilson Surgical Society Distinguished Visiting Professor. Please consider donating to the HWSS in support of our residents. Visit https: www.harwellwilson. org/home for more information.

The momentum of our prominent visitors continues with Dr. Julie A. Freischlag, immediate past president of the American College of Surgeons, chief executive officer of Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist and executive vice president for health affairs of Wake Forest University, who will serve as our 2023 Harwell Wilson Surgical Society (HWSS) Distinguished Visiting Professor. As you are all aware, this year represents the 50th anniversary of HWSS with the launch of an important fundraising campaign. Herein, we recognize the many faculty, alumni and friends that have donated generously to support the residents of our program. This edition’s Faculty and Alumni Spotlights feature Dr. Travis Webb, Professor, Division of Trauma/ Surgical Critical Care and Dr. Gary Hughes ’04, respectively.
