Medals to Kick路off Fall Competitive Season
World Cup Competition La Serena, Chile, Sept. 9-11. Carly Janiga, Marcia Newby and Liz Tricase started the fall competitive season with a World Cup competition in La Serena, Chile, Sept. 9-11. The athletes, all of whom participated at the Olympic Team selection camp, competed in the Copa La Serena event, which was an event finals competition only. Quali fication rounds began on Sept. 9, the top 8 performed on each event Sept. 10, and the top three competed on Sept. 11, where the fina l results were determined.

Gold-Vault and Floor Silver-Beam
Desert Devil's Janiga, 15, was the big wi nner for the U.S. following the "Winner's Finals" where the top three qualifiers from the semi-final round face-off, Janiga took first place on both vault and floor, and added a second place fini sh on beam . Sixteen-year-old Newby of Excalibur Gymnastics took second on vault and thi rd on floor. Illinois Gymnastics In stitute's Tricase, 18, added a third place fini sh on bars in her final elite meet before heading off to Stanford University.

Holland's Laura Van Leeuwen won bars while Slovakia's Zuzana Sekerova won beam. Other medalists included: Daniele Hypolito-second on floor and bars and third on beam, and Brazil's Merly de Jesus finished third on bars.
