Welcome Aboard mateur sports in America are going through continuing changes. The issues of athletes' rights, professionalism, sponsorships, and the 1984 Olympic Games are among the current issues which must be faced. Our sport is not immune to these problems. Gymnastics is involved with them all. During these times of change, the USGF was faced with an additional challenge. A month ago, Mr. Roger Counsil submitted his resignation as Executive Director of the Federation. After discussion with Mr. Counsil concerning his decision, the Executive Committee accepted his resignation. As you probably know, prior to Roger 's resignation the Board of Directors of the USGF had made the decision to move the Federation offices f~om Ft. Worth to IndianapOlis, effective May 2, 1983. This pending change in location required the Executive Committee to pursue the task of selecting a new Executive Director with expediency. The Executive Committee, in making its recommendation to the Board, based their decision on the individual's knowledge, past involvement in the sport, effective business experience and proven ability to handle the diverse responsibilities of the position. Also, it was of paramount importance that the person chosen would have the immediate enthusiastic acceptance and support of the gymnastics community. After careful deliberation, the Executive Committee unanimously nominated Mr. Mike ]acki to serve as acting Executive Director until the Board of Directors could vote on the nomination. The Board vote was taken by mail ballot and Mr. ]acki was elected by an overwhelming majority. Mr. ]acki's background makes him singularly well-qualified for the aSSignment. He has been deeply involved in all aspects of the sport for more than two decades. He is a former AllAmerican gymnast and a nationally rated official. His employment with AMF gave him the needed experience in business, marketing, and promotion. His recent position as USGF Director of Events proved his ability to work with sponsors, handle contracts, and coordinate the vital financial areas of these events. We are confident Mr. ]acki will effectively lead our Federation during these difficult times and believe he will handle the job with efficiency and dignity. We hope each of you will assist Mike by providing the support needed by the new administration to properly serve our Federation. The USGF would like to thank Mr. Counsil and his staff for their hard work and dedication to the sport and the gymnastics community. We wish them all great success in their future endeavors. Let us now work together, communicate, and put aside individual differences so that we may reach our ultimate goal, the building of the finest gymnastics Federation and Programs in the world.
