Dear Friends, A letter for an annual report of gifts necessitates a look back – and what a year we have endured! Loneliness, frustration, anxiety, grief – I don’t know anyone who escaped the pandemic untouched in some way. Please know we have held you and your loved ones in prayer through this difficult period. Yet, as we emerge, I am filled with hope, borne of the remarkable strength that is evident as we consider this past year. Forced to be socially distant, every part of our community – faculty and staff, students and families – pulled together as one so that Ursuline could continue, as we have for 75 years, to educate young women to make a difference in today’s world. And our benefactors, whose support is so essential to our school’s fiscal health, united to help us raise, for the first time, over one million dollars in annual giving! Each dollar, each donor, is a voice raised in support of our Ursuline mission, and we are deeply grateful. We’re fully back at school now, with health measures in place to keep our students engaged in inperson learning and our usual robust co-curricular offerings. Our theme for this year comes from the most frequently used words of St. Angela’s writings: United together in hope. And as St. Paul reminds us, “Hope does not disappoint.” Informed by the events of the past year, we are renewing our strategic planning efforts, and I look forward to sharing more with you in the months ahead. For if we can accomplish all that we did this year, under the most difficult of circumstances, just imagine what we will accomplish together in the next chapter of this remarkable institution’s history. URSULINE CELEBRATES 75TH ANNIVERSARY WITH A YEAR-LONG SERIES OF EVENTS “Archbishop Cushing yesterday announced the purchase of the J. Montgomery Sears home at the corner of Commonwealth Avenue and Arlington Street as a convent for Ursuline nuns. It will be the first time that this order has had a home in the city since their convent in Charlestown was burned by a mob at the height of the Know Nothing movement…” – Boston Post, January 1, 1946 When a few families approached then-Archbishop Cushing of Boston about establishing a school for girls in the mid-1940’s, they were thrilled when the Ursuline Sisters accepted Cushing’s invitation to return to Boston to establish a school called Ursuline Academy. But little did they know that over the next 75 years, it would move to Dedham to gain additional space, send its graduates to the finest schools in the country, and boast of an alumnae base of over 4,300 women. Seven and a half decades after these humble beginnings, we meet the milestone of our 75th anniversary with pride in our heritage, confidence in our tradition of educational excellence, and optimism in the future of our community. We are marking the occasion with a fifteen-month long celebration that began in April and will continue through June of 2022. We have much to be proud of: the legacy of the Ursuline Sisters, a history of empowering and educating young women for lives of impact, a dedicated faculty, generous donors, and a bright future. The goal over this year is to hold events both large and small, in-person and virtual, so that there is something for everyone to enjoy.
Commemorative Mass: St. Cecilia Parish, Boston A Mass live-streamed from the historic St. Cecilia Parish in Boston, a few blocks away from Ursuline’s original Arlington Street campus, served as the kickoff for our year-long celebration in April. Celebrant Rev. John Unni paid homage to Saint Angela Merici and to the Ursuline Sisters for laying the groundwork for a network of schools dedicated to educating women of purpose and integrity, and emphasized the importance of faith-filled women leaders in the world. After the Commemorative Mass, activity shifted to our Speaker Series.
Speaker Series: Rev. James Martin, SJ Fr. James Martin, SJ is a Jesuit priest, author, editor at large of America magazine, and regular commentator in the national and international media. He joined us in April via Zoom to discuss his new book, Learning to Pray: A Guide for Everyone. Alumnae and friends from around the country, some as far away as Alaska, were treated to Fr. Jim’s engaging, personable style as he discussed how ordinary people can open their hearts and listen to God, and answered questions from participants.

In May, three individuals with a deep knowledge of Ursuline Academy joined for a discussion of the locales that formed Ursuline’s history. Elisa Ryan, O.S.U. of the Ursuline Central Province spoke of Saint Angela Merici’s roots in Brescia, Italy; Nancy Schultz, author of Fire and Roses, enlightened us on the events leading to the burning of the Mount Benedict Academy convent in Charlestown, Massachusetts; and Angela Krippendorf ’59 O.S.U., former provincial of the Northeast Province, lent her perspective as an alumna of the Arlington Street campus and a teacher in the early years in Dedham.
Continuing into June, Mark Shriver, Chief Strategy Officer at Save the Children and former member of the Maryland House of Delegates, shared a personal account of his relationship with his father, Sargent Shriver, that led to the publication of his book A Good Man: Rediscovering My Father, Sargent Shriver. The event was co-hosted by Mary Beth Hunt McMahon ’82, President and CEO of Special Olympics Massachusetts, an organization on which the Shrivers made a lasting impression. Special Olympics was founded and shaped by Eunice Kennedy Shriver and her husband Sargent Shriver, founder of the Peace Corps.
In June, the 75 members of the 75th graduating class of Ursuline Academy celebrated the completion of their Ursuline journey with a traditional Baccalaureate Mass and an in-person Commencement. After having had their junior and senior years partially disrupted by the COVID pandemic, the graduates richly deserved the opportunity to celebrate the completion of their Ursuline experience with pomp and circumstance. INTERNATIONAL SERVIAM DAY 2022 For the students at Ursuline Academy in Dedham, service is not simply a part of their curriculum but is a lived reality that continues long after graduation. That reality is the impetus for International Serviam Day (ISD), a dedicated day each year when Ursuline community members around the world come together to serve their local communities. In honor of Ursuline’s 75th anniversary year, we invite our entire community – students, alumnae, parents, faculty, and staff – to collectively serve 75 organizations in the greater Boston area and beyond between now and International Serviam Day on May 14, 2022.

Whether on a conference call in Cambridge with members of her 300-person team at HubSpot, a leading marketing software firm, or speaking to a room full of Ursuline seniors and their parents, Katie Burke ’99 is a force for change – or as she describes it “making good trouble.” As the Chief People Officer at HubSpot, Burke is responsible for the company’s recruitment, people operations, learning and development, culture, and employee experience. Five years ago, she started a diversity and inclusion initiative at the firm, resulting in a measurable increase in workforce diversity. “Making sure our talent pool is diverse, being able to scale our global talent reach in places like Bogota and Tokyo, and then ensuring that my team scales to meet the needs of the business – those are the things that keep me up at night,” she commented recently in an interview with Serviam Magazine. After graduating from Ursuline in 1999, Burke attended Bates College and the MIT Sloan School of Management, and spent several years in leadership roles in public relations and marketing. In recent years, she was selected by the Boston Business Journal as one of Boston’s 40 under 40, and also serves on the board of Paycor, as a columnist at Inc., and as an advisor at 826 Boston. Behind such a stellar resume, one might expect to find someone who takes herself very seriously. Yet when invited to Ursuline this spring to speak to the senior class at the annual Senior Parent Brunch, Burke advised the students “Don’t cut your own bangs,” and told of her arrival as a transfer student wearing the wrong uniform skirt due to recent changes in the dress code. Her selfdeprecating manner, though, is an effective delivery mechanism for a serious message about the importance of diversity and inclusion. As Burke advised the soon-to-be college freshwomen, “Use your voices to create good trouble, to create change, and to advocate for what’s right and just. I started the diversity and inclusion initiative at HubSpot five years ago, but I still use my voice to say, ‘Why aren’t there women in this room? Why are we not doing more?’” When asked how she became so passionate about inclusion, Burke credits her upbringing. “My mom had very few hard and fast rules, but one in our house was ‘no one eats lunch alone.’ From a very young age, it set the tone that inclusion is something highly valued in our household, and inspired me to learn and read more about how I can be an upstander on
behalf of others.” Burke elaborates, “With HubSpot’s diversity and inclusion initiatives, I’ve had to be willing to both challenge others and have my own assumptions challenged as well. So I’ve pushed very hard on things like releasing our diversity data and innovating around fertility benefits, and I’ve also been pushed hard by our employees when we aren’t doing enough.” Citing Michael Lewis, author of The Blind Side, Burke advised Ursuline’s seniors “Don’t be good, be great. Set lofty goals and set out to achieve them.” She recounted setting an intentional goal for HubSpot to become known as the best place to work. During Burke’s tenure there, the company has been named the #1 Best Place to Work by Glassdoor, the Boston Globe’s Best Place to Work, and a Best Place to Work for Women and Parents by Fortune. The company is known for its family-friendly policies, which encourage employees to use their judgment in determining how to balance work and family responsibilities. When asked to look back at her Ursuline experience, Burke reflects, “I think one thing Ursuline does really well is teach great writing skills. People underestimate how important those are regardless of which career path you choose. Being able to communicate effectively is such a gift. The other is just the importance of helping new people feel welcome. My experience being new at Ursuline was made meaningfully better by the generosity and selflessness of Martha Tierney giving me her uniform. I now try to emulate her kindness in how I welcome others to school, work, or social events.” When asked what would be her advice to her teenage self, Burke responds “Run your own race. I spent so much time worrying that I wasn’t as (fill in the blank) as other people, and I wish I could tell my 16-year-old self to focus more on running my own race and to spend a lot less time comparing myself to others. It’s especially challenging for today’s teenagers, because what people present on the internet isn’t real. Spend your life optimizing your reality, not your Instagram or TikTok image, which I know is easier said than done.” Whether pushing herself or others to do better or serving as a model for inclusion, Katie Burke is running a race of her own choosing – and running it to win.

TREE-PLENISH: Seniors lead service project to benefit the environment by Tegan Greene ’22, Communications Intern
It goes without saying that Ursuline’s motto of Serviam is central to student life. Seniors Cassandra Cowell, Marissa Petrucci, and Helen Way exemplified Ursuline students’ drive to live out this motto in their recent partnership with the Tree-Plenish organization. Cowell brought “Tree-Plenish” to the Ursuline community back in April through coordinating, with the help of two of her classmates, a service opportunity for students. Tree-Plenish is a non-profit organization that strives to replenish the environment by planting trees in accordance with the paper usage at schools, creating more sustainable schools. She reflected on the experience, saying “Tree-Plenish was an amazing opportunity for me to recognize how much our community wants to help make the world a more renewable place for us to live in and purchase trees to restore the amount of paper that is used during a school year. The main thing I loved about this experience was that we were able to involve our classmates in this service opportunity, which gave our community a chance to come together and work with each other to make the planet a better place!”

STUDENT SPOTLIGHT Cassandra’s sister Melissa’ 16, an Ursuline graduate, introduced her to this service opportunity. Cowell, eager to introduce the program to the community, employed the help of her classmates Marissa Petrucci and Helen Way to collaborate on bringing TreePlenish to Ursuline. Together they planned the event, attended meetings, contacted administration, and hosted the tree planting event on campus. An electronic form was circulated among students whereby a variety of trees were sold for two dollars. Students signed up online and arrived at Ursuline on April 24th to receive their trees with a local address where they planted them. Student volunteer Emily McHugh ’21 “enjoyed being able to enact real change in the community,” and the opportunity to resume service in-person with her classmates.
The event was a huge success, with 50 trees being planted, and an additional 50 being donated to Needham’s Arbor Day where residents received trees to plant in their own backyards. Petrucci felt her time leading this event was a worthwhile experience because of how she was able to connect with other students through service. In recognition for their efforts, the students were awarded the Land, Air, and Natural World Award from Project Green Schools, a Massachusetts-based organization dedicated to environmental education, and were commended in a virtual ceremony held in May.

PRINCIPAL SUE PETRONE by Minali Venkatesh ’15
Ms. Sue Petrone was appointed the new principal of Ursuline Academy in May, and joined us on July 1, 2021. She succeeds Mary-Kate Tracy ’94, Principal and Director of Mission for the past four years, who will now focus exclusively on her role as Director of Mission and will also lead the school’s efforts in diversity, equity, and belonging as well as global initiatives. Petrone recently moved back to the United States from the United Kingdom, where she had been working in private school administration. From 2019–2021, Sue served as the Upper School Head at The American School in England (TASIS), an international boarding and day school. Prior to that, she served as Upper School Director at Gill St. Bernard’s School in Gladstone, NJ, a pre-K–12 day school. Sue began her career as a science teacher, and is teaching Forensics to juniors and seniors. We sat down with Sue to get to know the person behind the principal:
What drew you to the principal’s job at Ursuline? When I looked at Ursuline, I thought it had a great academic program for girls. I spoke with Kate Levesque and some of the trustees, and I was really impressed by their commitment to the girls and their passion for the school. Most of all, I loved seeing how invested the entire community was in education. I had a chance to meet with a lot of parents over Zoom, and I was both surprised and pleased at how many showed up because it takes time. Time is money, time is energy, time is important, and they took the time to be there. When I was on campus back in March, I had a chance to visit a few classes. The teaching was great, but when I visit classes, I also look at the students, and they were engaged, they were driving some of the questions, and their voice was heard, and that to me is more important. I’d rather have students who are owning the classroom, and I feel like that is very prevalent at Ursuline. I also appreciate that Ursuline’s mission statement ends with the word “joy,” which to me is what school is about. If we’re not having some joy in what we do every day, we’re doing something wrong.
What are your main priorities for the upcoming school year? First of all, I want to strengthen and revive connections and contribute to creating the Ursuline community. The community last year was half on-campus, half off-campus for much of the year. I feel like taking the time to build and rebuild those

relationships is important. I think we were all incredibly affected by COVID and all the implications that came along with it, especially adolescents. So, for me, the biggest priority is to get to know students, but also to help those connections happen and get those relationships formed. I do my best to visit classes and get to know students and teachers, to get to know what’s going on in a school. It would be bold of me to come in and say I want to change these four things at Ursuline because I don’t really know all the fifteen things at Ursuline that are great and wonderful, so I need to spend some time getting to know people and listening to them and learning more about what the school year looks and feels like here.
What are your thoughts about how to keep Ursuline Academy distinctly Ursuline? That’s a bit of a tough one for me, because I haven’t lived all of the traditions that Ursuline has that make it distinctly Ursuline. But when I came to interview and met the girls, I found confident, thoughtful, committed students. The commitment to service was ever-present in what they spoke about, and to me that’s an important part of life. The students talked about their relationships with teachers and how they felt like those were so important to them, that their teachers are accessible, caring, and wanted them to do well. I don’t know if that’s uniquely Ursuline, but you don’t see it everywhere. I also think that Ursuline is small by public school standards, and that has value. Part of what I think it means is that, as a student, you have to be involved,

because if you’re not involved, then the activity won’t happen. If you don’t play soccer, or act in plays, or participate in speech, or do robotics, then they’re not going to run. So you’re heavily encouraged to really be a part of the school, and it’s expected. That to me is a great part of Ursuline.
After being in England, did you experience culture shock being back in the U.S.? I still struggle a little bit with driving. I lived in a really small town while I was over there, so I had to get a license. As I drive in the U.S., I have to think, when I get to roundabouts, that I’m going to the right, not the left. And I sometimes have to think when I’m turning that I need to be going into the right lane, not the left. Honestly, it’s also just nice to be able to go to Dunkin’ Donuts and get some coffee. The U.K. doesn’t really believe in iced coffee. I do have to admit that Dunkin’ Donuts coffee has revived me a number of times back here in the U.S.
What are your personal interests? I’ve been working in high schools for what feels like forever, so I watch a lot of high school sports and theater. I’m one of those people who, if something’s happening, I feel like I should be there. I also love to cook and bake. I love to bake and bring food into school because then I can have one piece of what I have created and not have to eat the rest of it for a week. I’m not very good at following recipes – I think recipes are guides and you as a cook should be adding in other things. As a former science teacher, I know what a lot of the chemicals in cooking do, so I feel like I can augment them and change them as I need to. I’m a bit of a homebody at times. I have two kids and a husband and pets so time spent with them is important to me. My family is from Massachusetts, so it’s been really nice to reconnect with them, too.

Ursuline Academy celebrates its 75th commencement ceremony by Janet Reynolds, Advancement/Admissions Assistant
On Sunday, June 6, the 75 members of the Class of 2021 received their diplomas from Ursuline Academy, becoming its 75th graduating class since the school’s founding in 1946. With a large number of the community vaccinated and Massachusetts COVID restrictions relaxing, Ursuline was able to hold an in-person graduation ceremony and a Baccalaureate Mass on the evening before, with both ceremonies held outdoors on campus under a brilliant sun. Just prior to the ceremony, the graduates assembled for the traditional formal photo on the staircase leading up to the Ursuline Convent, framed by rhododendron shrubs in full bloom. President and CEO of Special Olympics Massachusetts Mary Beth Hunt McMahon ’82 returned to deliver the keynote address.
Telling the graduates “I had a plan, but Ursuline Academy changed that plan,” McMahon relayed how the spirit of Serviam acquired during her Ursuline years prompted her to leave her job in the financial industry for a vocation with Special Olympics. The valedictory address was delivered by Nicole Olson and the two salutatory addresses were delivered by Brooke DeLucia and Greta Wyers. Isabella Pieretti was granted the Serviam Award for outstanding traits of leadership in service, awareness of others, acceptance of responsibility and academic achievement. Katherine Woodworth was awarded the Sister Mercedes Videira Medal for integrity, humility, generosity, and concern for others, coupled with a deep love for the Academy. HONORARY GRAD As part of the June 6 commencement ceremony, Kate Levesque surprised outgoing trustee Ann Gioioso P’13, ’15, ’20 with an honorary Ursuline Academy diploma in recognition of “her extraordinary efforts and accomplishments as a Trustee as well as her steadfast commitment to the mission of Ursuline Academy.”

Lorraine (Noel) Manninen ’80 writes, “My son, Thomas A. Manninen, graduated with his Juris Doctor degree from Mitchell Hamline School of Law in St. Paul, Minnesota on June 7, 2021. We are so proud of him!”
Carolyn (Arnish) Elaimy ’08 married Ameer Elaimy on Sunday, June 13, 2021 at Oceanview of Nahant. In attendance were Julianne O’Connor ’08, Bridget Bussell-Brujic ’08, and Marissa Schneider ’15. Siena Forest ’08 and Charlotte Harrison ’08 attended the ceremony virtually. In addition, Siena Forest of the Minnesota Opera and OOPSMN performed in a custom pre-recorded song that was played at the ceremony per request of the bride. The song performed was Make Our Garden Grow from the operetta Candide. Forest was accompanied by pianist Carson Rose Schneider and tenor Jack Swanson.
Jeanie (Zmijewski) Taddeo ’89 writes, “I am excited to announce I reached the milestone of being 13 1/2 years cancer FREE! I was diagnosed when I was 16 weeks pregnant with my twins! The twins, in utero, and I both underwent 2 surgeries and 4 very strong chemotherapy treatments…all together! My twins, Giavanna and Gillian, were born at 25 weeks weighing in at 2 and 3 pounds but totally healthy!! They just turned 13 years old! One week after their birth, I was back at the hospital of the University of Pennsylvania receiving 8 more chemo treatments, 35 rounds of radiation, and finally a double mastectomy! We are all so happy to be alive and healthy today through the Lord and the intercession of St. Gianna!” Meghan (Altman) Stoll ’97 and her husband Tim welcomed their twins Waverly and Keating in April, 2021. Rachel (Linso) Metcalf ’06 writes, “The Metcalf family welcomed Isaac John Walter, born on July 17, 2021 at South Shore Hospital. Fund for Ursuline
2021 HIGHLIGHTS Ursuline Academy held its first true day of giving in support of the Fund for Ursuline last spring on March 19, and what a day it was! (The 2020 day of giving was transformed into a month-long effort due to the pandemic.) Propelled by the generosity of 487 donors, including 81 first-time donors, who opened their hearts and decided to be “All In,” the day exceeded its goal by 18% to raise $206,000 in support of our students, faculty, programs, and physical plant. First-time donors helped to raise participation in the Fund for Ursuline by 14% over the prior year, continuing a three-year trend in increased participation. Inspired by the success of All In for Ursuline 2021, we plan to continue this single day of philanthropy. Save the date for March 16, 2022!

DONOR PROFILE JACK and MARY GORMAN: Faith and Education Always at the Core To say that Jack and Mary Gorman held faith and education close to their hearts would be an understatement. The parents of former Principal Mary Jo Keaney ’82, Mr. and Mrs. Gorman passed away in 2018 and 2020, respectively. The Gormans held a special place in their hearts for both Stonehill College and Ursuline Academy. Married for 59 years, the Gormans met on the first day of their freshman year at Stonehill College, and for the rest of their lives were devoted to the place that brought them together. Jack initially did not want to pursue higher education, but was convinced by his aunts Alice and Anna who were both teachers to give it a try. “That education provided the foundation for a long career in finance at UPS, so he was eternally grateful to the Holy Cross fathers for providing him with an opportunity to better his life,” said Mary Jo Keaney. “Mom wanted the legacy of the Ursuline sisters – that of intellectual curiosity and excellence – to continue to flourish.” – Mary Jo Keaney ’82 That gratitude was also at the heart of the Gormans’ generosity to Ursuline Academy; their philanthropy supported the campaign for the Reynolds Center, a new athletic and convocation space on campus that opened in 2017. “Mom and Dad’s focus was faith and education. When it came time for me to choose a high school, I wanted to go to a girls’ school. Mom had known of Ursuline and wanted me to have the best education she and Dad could provide, so it was a natural choice.” Keaney formed close relationships with many of the Ursuline sisters, especially Sr. Dorothy Doyle, who created a seminar-style class for three of her advanced Latin students, including Keaney. “We would have class in her office and drink tea,” said Keaney. “It was almost a college experience.” Mary Gorman, an English teacher herself and known as being a precise grammarian, also taught at Ursuline in the early ’90s at the invitation of Sister Mercedes Videira. “Mom was known to say that ‘we stand on the shoulders of those who teach us,’ and this is why she chose to benefit Ursuline Academy in her estate plan, in addition to the gifts that she and Dad made during their lifetime,” explained Keaney. “Mom wanted the legacy of the Ursuline sisters – that of intellectual curiosity and excellence – to continue to flourish.”

Gifts to the Fund for Ursuline sustain the foundation of excellence that allows Ursuline Academy to flourish. As the school’s second largest source of income (after tuition), the Fund for Ursuline provides a core source of funding that supports Ursuline’s needs, enabling the Academy to offer programs and initiatives that benefit the entire community. Constance Lynch Feely Award The Constance Lynch Feely Award is an endowed scholarship created by former faculty member and mother of four alumnae (and the grandmother of one) Constance Lynch Feely and her husband, Dr. R. John Feely, of Dedham. Their four daughters, Mary Moriarty ’80 of Dedham, Alice Wilson ’81 of Milwaukee, WI, Jane Marinella ’83 of Franklin, and Constance “Consie” Giguere ’86 of Providence, RI, along with their brothers have generously supported the scholarship with gifts on their mother’s birthday, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, and Christmas. The purpose of the scholarship is to provide financial aid to a student with demonstrated need. On August 17, 2020, Mrs. Feely passed away and her named scholarship became a means for family, friends and former colleagues to honor her. Tea Room takes on a new look to reflect its many uses Parents of the class of 2021 continued the beautiful tradition of supporting the Senior Parent Gift Fund as a tribute to their daughters and a way to leave a lasting impact on the students that follow behind the graduating class. Working with Ursuline administration, the Senior Parent Gift Committee agreed that a refresh of the Tea Room was a project deserving of funding. While our alumnae from the Boston/Arlington Street campus will recollect the Tea Room as a formal dining room, the Tea Room in Dedham has been a space used in a variety of ways for nearly 60 years. As a hangout space before the school day begins, a gathering place for clubs and activities, a lunchroom (of course!), a study space in between classes or after school, or a banquet hall for athletic dinners, the Tea Room gets a lot of use. The 2021 Senior Parent Gift has allowed Ursuline to reimagine this space in an effort to make it more welcoming, practical, and collaborative. Through the assistance of UA alumna and interior designer Krista Iannoni Easterly ’03, the space has already begun to take on a new look. A fresh coat of paint has been applied to infuse some color, life, and some much-needed personality into the room. The cylindrical columns have been squared off and an attractive beadboard has been applied. Sconces have been installed, adding improved lighting options to an otherwise starkly lit space. To catch up with the times and needs of students, the electrical system has been upgraded and outlets installed with USB ports, making it easier to charge those iPads and devices. And that’s not all. The plans call for new seating options and table treatments to drastically improve the space. By adding more modern seating areas, high-top tables, and more comfortable booths, the Tea Room is going to provide opportunities for smaller groups to gather, work on projects, and make socializing a bit easier. Easterly has even more great ideas for this space, which is why the parents of the class of 2022 have also adopted this project for the Senior Parent Gift this year.

Ursuline’s Got Talent!

It was March 13, 2020, and plans were underway for Ursuline’s 13th annual signature fundraiser, “An Evening for Ursuline,” which was scheduled for November 20th. The caterer was working to create a delicious menu for guests, the lighting designer and rental company had been secured, and discussions to decide on a host for the evening were being explored. But by March 16th, life as we knew it had dramatically changed, and schools and businesses across the state and the country were forced to shift to a remote learning model due to the pandemic. Over the course of the summer of 2020, ideas for a virtual gala were explored. How would we do this? What would it look like? Would people attend? Thanks to the fantastic production team at Cramer, a Westwood-based event and content marketing agency with close ties to the Ursuline community, a plan was mapped out minute by minute, and by the end of August, a talent show theme was beginning to take shape. “Ursuline’s Got Talent!” was born! A request for talent video submissions went out to the entire Ursuline Academy community, and narrowing the twenty-four talent video submissions down to five finalists was a very real challenge for our judges. Guests voted “live” for the performers and when votes were tallied, 1st place went to drummer Dana Lepper ’23 and 2nd place went to figure skater Sophia-Ray Richer ’26. The other finalists were singer Bella Coe ’21, singer Mary Kate McDonald ’20, and pianist Alexis Lee ’25. In addition to those winners, special performances were featured by opera singer Siena Forest ’08 and Pauline Wells P’22. Thanks to all who sponsored, made donations, attended virtually, purchased auction items, and voted, Ursuline’s first virtual gala was a huge success! It exceeded our goal and raised over $130,000 in support of Ursuline’s educational experience. And now we are preparing to do it again!

29th Annual Fore the Girls Golf Tournament On Monday, June 28, 2021, the Ursuline community gathered for a sell-out golf event at the Blue Hill Country Club in Canton. Despite an intense heatwave, golfers were in good spirits and were not deterred from coming out to play the sport they love in support of Ursuline Academy! We extend our gratitude to the golfers and sponsors who made our 29th annual tournament possible, especially to tournament host Regina Sullivan ’78 and the Gaman Real Estate Group LLC, who helped to raise more than $100,000! Dedham Savings was named this year’s tournament honoree for their generous and consistent support of Ursuline Academy’s Fore the Girls tournament, as well as many other civic and non-profit organizations in and around the Dedham community. At the tournament banquet, Ursuline Assistant Athletic Director and Trainer Kim Munsey was recognized for receiving the “Massachusetts Women in Athletics Distinguished Service Award” from the MIAA (Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association) for her outstanding efforts in nurturing and guiding female athletes. In addition, six student athletes from the Classes of 2020 and 2021 were honored for signing letters of intent to continue their athletic careers in college: Caroline Afonso ’20 (track and field, Northeastern University), Siobhan O’Sullivan ’20 (track and field, Bucknell University), Caleigh Wukitch ’20 (swimming, Kenyon College), Kelly Cheevers ’21 (soccer, Sacred Heart University), Makenzie Haughey ’21 (lacrosse, St. Michael’s College), and Nicole Olson ’21 (soccer, University of Scranton). Last year’s Fore the Girls Golf Tournament was played after several postponements on September 21, 2020. Acknowledgments for the 2020 tournament were published in Ursuline’s Winter 2021 Annual Report.
