P R E S I D E N T

From the time I was a student and now as President of my alma mater, I have always been proud to be a Lobo. Our recent achievements, which are moving the University, its students, programs and research forward, have increased my pride.

From the UNM President

Our efforts to attract the best students and help them be successful academically are working. We have seen the number of enrolled students with a 26 ACT score or higher increase 12 percent and the retention rate of

nearly 80 percent. These achievements, combined with our record high graduation rates, indicate our efforts are effective. UNM continues to be a place of discovery and innovation. This year, 69 U.S. patents were issued for UNM innovations,

freshmen going into their sophomore year increase to

which is a record high for UNM. In addition, we have launched 39 start-up companies since 2012. These achievements

Robert G. Frank ’74 BS, ’77 MA, ’79 PhD

demonstrate that our faculty, students and researchers are finding solutions to critical challenges, and that these solutions are contributing to the New Mexico economy. I am proud that our comprehensive brand initiative launched this spring. Our new brand will enhance UNM’s global reputation, further unify our campus, and help the public better understand who we are, what we do and why it matters. This work is vital as we continue to recruit the best students and faculty, distinguish ourselves from our competitors and increase awareness of our top-tier programs. Because of you, we are now closer than ever to achieving our goal of raising $1 billion in private support by 2020. This year almost 13,000 donors gave more than $87 million in support of the University and its students. I am deeply grateful for the steadfast support from our alumni, friends and community members. Your gifts help propel our scholarships, programs, research and patient care forward, and I thank each of you for investing in UNM. Thank you for your commitment to our mission and students. Together, UNM’s students, faculty, staff, researchers, alumni and donors are changing the world. Go Lobos!

From the UNM Foundation Leadership At the UNM Foundation, we believe that philanthropy changes people’s lives, and when their lives change, their worlds change as well. Stories that illustrate this impact and exemplify how gifts to UNM improve the lives of others in meaningful ways are featured in this report. Nicole Palacios (featured on page 10), a single mother who returned to school to pursue her MBA at UNM, benefited from the Corine Müller-Peña Scholarship, which was established to honor another single mother who realized her own dream of higher education. Ison Tenney (featured on page 11), a U.S. Air Force veteran and recent nursing graduate, received the Diane Adamo Memorial Scholarship in Nursing, which had been established by a grieving family wanting to carry on the legacy of their loved one, who was also a nurse. Nicole and Ison’s worlds—as well as the worlds of countless other UNM students— have been changed forever thanks to the generosity of donors like you. Some donors have provided endowed gifts that deliver benefit to UNM in perpetuity. We are pleased that the Consolidated Investment Fund’s (CIF) performance (see page 4) is on target relative to our similarly sized peers. We anticipate that our modest risks will provide strong long-term returns, which will change worlds at UNM for years to come. We are grateful to all of our donors— individuals, corporations and foundations— who honor UNM through their giving. Your gifts support the excellence, creativity, discovery and achievement that occur throughout the University, year in and year out. Every gift to UNM has the potential to change lives by changing worlds. On behalf of our students, faculty, staff, student-athletes, coaches, health care providers, patients and their families, we thank you for your generosity and continued support. MICHELLE COONS

The UNM Board of Regents has delegated authority to the UNM Foundation CO N SO LI DATE D I NVE STM E NT F U N D Investment Committee to oversee and manage the endowment assets of the FY 2015-2016 University and the Foundation. The pooled assets are combined for investment purposes and operated as a unitized pool known as the Consolidated CIF ASSET ALLOCATION Investment Fund (CIF). The CIF is managed in accordance REAL ASSETS — REAL ASSETS — LIQUID ILLIQUID with the Consolidated Investment Fund Investment Policy, PRIVATE which is approved by both the UNM Foundation Board of EQUITY Trustees and the UNM Board of Regents.

2.9%

CIF investments are invested for the long-term using a diversified approach with the principal goal of maximizing the return, and thus the benefit to UNM, at a commensurate and acceptable level of risk. Investment strategy is guided by the concept of complementary managers who are responsible for specific asset categories and management styles in a diversified portfolio (see CIF Asset Allocation chart). The CIF finished the year with a market value of approximately $395.1 million, compared to $405.8 million a year ago, and an investment return of -1.3 percent, as compared to 0.5 percent the previous fiscal year. In addition to customary investment management expenses, a development funding allocation (DFA) of 1.6 percent is assessed against each participating fund to assist with operational expenses.

Your Gifts Change Worlds, Now and in the Future success, faculty research, campus programs and capital projects through their philanthropic giving to the University. The campaign’s theme, “Changing Worlds,” captures how lives are improved and enhanced through experiences and interactions at The University of New Mexico. Students come to UNM from diverse backgrounds—from big cities to small towns, from across the country to around the world—to explore, learn and achieve personal goals and dreams. They work with dedicated, accomplished faculty to conduct world-class scientific research, develop inventions throughout the scientific disciplines and create inspirational art. Breakthrough discoveries made by UNM’s medical researchers and the skilled care provided by the UNM Health Sciences Center’s physicians, nurses and other providers improve patients’ lives. Combined, these experiences transform people’s lives, perspectives and attitudes—ultimately changing their worlds. And while their worlds are influenced at UNM, they, in turn, influence the world around them. Since The University of New Mexico launched The Campaign for UNM in 2006, more than 69,000 donors have contributed more than $836 million to UNM’s students, faculty, programs, facilities, research and patient care. Thanks to the generosity of many people, corporations and foundations, we are closer than ever to reaching our overall campaign goal of $1 billion in private support by December 2020. Each gift has the potential to change worlds for our students, faculty, researchers, health care providers and patients. Imagine how your gift will answer the fundamental question of

A fourth generation New Mexican and first in her family to graduate from high school, Corine delayed her lifelong desire to go to college until her children were well on their way to their own careers. By the age of 6, Cheyne Dorsey (BLA ’16) knew he was fast. Though it would be years before his first track meet, the kid from Long Beach, Calif., emerged early as an athlete, starting baseball at 5 and football at 6. His mom, who had run track in college, encouraged Cheyne (pronounced Shane) to give track a try—and to stick with it despite its physical demands. Some 60 years before, clear across the country in upstate New York, high-school cross-country champion Ray Berube (BSED ’60) watched the Lobos play football against

His wife and college sweetheart, Jackie, created the Raymond E. Berube, Jr. Memorial Track Scholarship after his death in 2005. That scholarship helped Cheyne focus less on the cost of college and more on academics and track. “We always wanted to give back to UNM because they gave to Ray when he was in need,” Jackie said of the scholarship. Although the two men never met, Ray likely would have seen Cheyne’s potential, as others have. At UNM, Cheyne proved his prowess at indoor and outdoor meets in the 400-meter dash, 400-meter hurdle race, and 4x400meter relay events. “Cheyne came to the UNM track program as a walk-on athlete but quickly developed into a Mountain West

Founded in 1982, the Tom L. Popejoy Society recognizes philanthropic leaders whose cumulative giving over the course of their lifetimes exceeds $50,000. Thirty-four years later, this esteemed group of donors has grown to more than 1,000 active members who represent all aspects of The University of New Mexico. Named in honor of UNM’s legendary ninth president, Tom L. Popejoy, the society was established to embrace a community of philanthropists who impart President Popejoy’s passion and commitment to the University and who are changing worlds each and every day. Thanks to Popejoy Society members, the greatest impact on student success and opportunity, faculty support and research, campus programs, and capital projects and facilities can be achieved. The University of New Mexico Foundation would like to recognize our donors who have included the University in their estate plans or who have made other types of planned gifts. New Horizons Society (NHS) members are recognized at an annual luncheon event. A planned gift may take the form of a provision in a will or living trust, a beneficiary designation (such as on a bank or investment account, a retirement account, or life insurance), a gift annuity, a charitable remainder trust or other arrangements. Members of Lobo Legacy or Forever Lobo Society, a planned giving program for UNM Athletics, are indicated by a 5 in the NHS member listing. For more information about making a planned gift or joining the New Horizons Society, please contact Director of Gift Planning Sheila Hard, JD, at Sheila.Hard @unmfund.org or (5O5) 313-7610.

YOU R ANNUAL GIVING OPPORTUNITIES AT U N M

UNM President’s Club: The UNM President’s Club is a philanthropic bridge between The University of New Mexico and our community. Comprised of distinguished alumni, friends and community leaders who join together to support UNM’s key initiatives, this group of influential donors is committed to the success of our students, and they make it possible for us to seize great opportunities as they arise. Donations to the President’s Club have played a key role in the success of programs such as the Freshman Learning Communities, which led to dramatic improvements in the success rates of first year students. Recently, President’s Club support and focus have been directed to help launch the Innovation Academy (the academic component of Innovate ABQ), allowing students the opportunity to engage in entrepreneurial projects while enrolled at UNM. Equally as important as program support, President’s Club funds give UNM the ability to be responsive to student needs. One example is the Stay-A-Lobo Fund, which provides emergency grants to keep students from withdrawing from programs or discontinuing studies for financial reasons. With gifts to the President’s Club Fund, donors become partners in supporting core priorities. The designation A in this report identifies President’s Club members during FY 2015-2016. For more information, please contact Raquel LeCesne at Raquel.LeCesne@ unmfund.org or (505) 313-7669.

Private support makes a significant difference in the quality of our students’ experience both inside and outside the classroom at The University of New Mexico. The UNM Office of Annual Giving oversees several programs to engage alumni and friends of The University of New Mexico.

Presidential Scholarship Program: In 2016, UNM’s Presidential Scholarship Program celebrated 40 years of providing premium scholarships to some of UNM’s most talented students. Since 1976, more than 4,100 Presidential Scholars have attended UNM, with 500 currently enrolled. An annual gift of $2,600 sponsors a Presidential Scholar. UNM then increases it to an $8,400 award. Endowing a Presidential Scholarship requires a minimum $50,000 gift. Donors may also give through the “Share-A-Scholar” program by making a gift of any size. A PSP designation O in this report identifies individual and corporate sponsors during FY 2015-2016. For more information, please contact Associate Director of Annual Giving Cathy Bunch at Cathy.Bunch@unmfund. org or (505) 313-7679.

Established in 2004, the UNM Cherry and Silver Society recognizes dedicated alumni who make a gift to UNM within 12 months of graduation and at least once every year thereafter. When donors support UNM’s students, faculty, staff, doctors and researchers, they become partners in learning, creativity, invention and healing while inspiring others to do the same. For more information, please contact Director of Annual Giving Willie Romero at Willie.Romero@unmfund. org or (5O5) 313-7686 or visit unmfund.
